Contemplations * Rev. Dennis Hamilton * [email protected]

Emptiness

June’s theme is Emptiness. I am writing this from Camp Coho at the Kerrville Folk Festival.

It is a place to wind down and empty out. Our camp is one of dozens dotted throughout

Quiet Valley. Coho sits in the far corner of the campground next to a vast field filled with

wild flowers and birds. Limestone hills embrace Quiet Valley. The mornings are quiet after the late night

song circles die out and there is time, time out of ordinary time, vacation time.

Schedules are forgotten. My smart phone beeps and tells me I am missing a meeting. A lark sparrow

murmurs something about thistles and I am reminded that the meeting is here and now. I empty my mind

of schedules.

Someone takes out a guitar or mandolin and the morning begins to sing. Food is shared. Conversations

come and go. Songwriters from all over the country come and go. Late at night they come and share their

songs in a circle. The circle is filled and emptied.

All over Quiet Valley people walk. They walk to the latrines. They walk to the stage events, the music. They

visit each other’s camps. The speed limit for vehicles is five miles per hour. They never seem to go that fast.

It is the realm of slow time.

Over by the Main Stage there is a big meadow where the children play. They run around in face paint with

glow sticks and hula hoops. When it rains they tramp in the mud puddles squeeling to each other. Gangs of

children entertain each other. Young adults wear skimpy clothing and show their tattoos. It is like a refugee

camp for folk singers and poets. Or maybe a rehab camp for corporate serfs.

Will you have a place to empty out your busy life this summer? A place like the Grand Canyon or the deep

Pacific where all you are, all your busyness, your schedules, your worries are but a tiny pebble, a drop in the

ocean? Or maybe an empty field will do it for you as it does for me. Will there be time out of time for you?

Our lives lived in buildings and cars are scaled to human size. We need to visit mountains, look up at the

night sky, and be dwarfed. We need to feel small and insignificant from time to time. A natural theology like

the kind we inherited from the Transcendentalists finds all the awe and splendor, all the glory and promise

right here in the natural world. But we need to step away from our artificial world of schedules and

deadlines and just be here now where we really are. That’s why I come to Kerrville Folk Festival each year.

Please take some time this summer to empty out your schedule. Take a break. Be still. Be still. Come back

rejuvenated. Come back empty and ready to be filled again.

Faithfully, even while on vacation,

Dennis

Themes for 2013-2014

► September RETURNING

As we return from our summer wanderings to the normal church rhythm, we are invited to think

about what we return to: home, companions, church, school…And are there practices that you have

neglected? Are there things you will abandon?

► October HAUNTING

What haunts your life? The dead? Memories? Old experiences? Old beliefs? Resentments? We

look for ways to befriend our ghosts.

► November REAPING

What have you sewn? What have we all sewn, and what will we reap? Have we sewn good

seeds/deeds? Have we nurtured them? Karma.

► December PRESERVING

What is worth preserving? In your life, this church, our nation, the environment? What gifts has this

year given you? What will you cherish? What lessons have you learned?

► January PREPARING

Change comes whether we want it to or not. What will you do with your one wild and crazy life?

What will you change? What needs to lie fallow?

► February STAYING

Often it is easier to change the subject, eat something, watch a show. Staying with the feeling can be

difficult. Two dogs meditating. One says, “The hard part is learning to stay.”

► March PLANTING

What will you invest in this spring? Beans? Soy? Your family? Your soul? What will we be planting

in society? Justice? Health? Sanity?

► April FOOLING

Yes, it matters what we do, but if we take it too seriously, we will spoil the fun. We celebrate the

absurdity of life this month.

► May LEAVING

Everyone leaves eventually. How do we say goodbye? What remains?

► June THRIVING

After the reception is over and the relatives go home, we pick up our lives and go on. Remember the

joy, the hope, and the mission. Thrive.

Come “Explore Horizon” with Us! For those who are visiting and want to know more about Unitarian Universalism and Horizon, or for members who want to learn more about how Horizon works, a series of classes may answer your questions. On Saturday, June 15th, “How Do U Fit into UU?” will be presented by members of the Membership Committee and other Horizon leaders. It starts at 10:30 AM and runs until 2:30 PM. Hear about the history of Horizon, how our members participate in the life of the church and what activities and offerings we have. We’ll also cover the expectations of membership. A light lunch will be served during class, which will be held in the church library. On Saturday, June 29th, Reverend Dennis Hamilton will lead “New to UU” from 9:00 AM to Noon. Learn about the history and structure and uniqueness of Unitarian Universalism. Hear about our Seven Principles that we strive to understand and integrate into our lives. And get to know our Senior Minister and our Director of Lay Ministry, Marianna Seaton.

On Sunday, June 30th, Reverend Hamilton will conduct a New Member Sunday where anyone wanting to join Horizon may do so at that time. Contact him at [email protected] if you would like to join. _________________________________ You can enroll in the Exploring Horizon classes by sending an email to [email protected]. Or, look for a sign-up sheet at the Welcome Center in the church lobby. Please also feel free to send questions to the email address above—we sincerely hope you will join us! _________________________________

LAST CALL FOR A SPECIAL VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

Thank you to those of you volunteering to help out with my Eagle Scout project this Saturday, June 1st,

from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. in the Horizon meditation garden. We could still use a few more volunteers if

you want to help us plant trees!

All volunteers need to arrive at Horizon Unitarian Universalist Church by

9:00 AM, Saturday.

I will introduce Ann Pettit, my project liaison at Horizon (Grounds Chair at

Horizon), and the Scout project lieutenants. We will then check with all

volunteers about tools and I will give a safety briefing. At around 9:30, I

will show everyone the tree planting video to help give everyone a basic

idea of how to plant the trees. Afterwards, volunteers will be given step-

by-step written directions to plant the trees. Me, Ann, and the

lieutenants will supervise as well as help plant. Please do not rush when

planting your trees, we've allowed for plenty of time. After I have

explained all the tasks for the day, I will ask anyone with a question to

speak up.

We plan to start planting around 10:00 AM. At 11:00, water will be offered to everyone, and at 12:00 we will

have a lunch break, and we will provide lunch. If you have any food allergies please let me know. The whole

planting process is estimated to be over by 2:00 PM. When we finish cleaning up supplies and materials, the

project should be finished by around 3:00 PM.

Here is what you need to bring and wear:

Shovels, gloves, rakes, buckets, and a pickaxe if you own one (please let me know if you do), wear old

clothes, hats, and shoes you can get dirty. Please come with sunscreen already applied.

We hope that you can stay for the whole project. The more people we have, the quicker the work will go.

We will take you from 9:00 AM to Noon or Noon to 3:00 PM if you cannot stay the whole time. Text me at

214-435-0515 if you have any questions. Thank you again for helping.

Sincerely,

T.J. Treece

P.S. I have raised $5,000 out of the $6,000 needed and still hope to raise the last $1,000 if you have not yet

made a contribution and would like to. Checks should be made out to Horizon.

Introduction to Reproductive Justice in Texas Maia Cudhea, adjunct professor Women's Studies, UNT, will be the speaker and discussion leader. The term Reproductive Justice represents a broader analysis of racial, economic, cultural and structural constraints on women's power. There right to have children, to not have children, and to parent children in safe and healthy environments is a human right. There are three main broad frameworks of reproductive justice:

reproductive health which deals with service delivery

reproductive rights, which addresses legal issues, and

reproductive justice, which focuses on movement building.

Time will be allowed for discussion. Join us June 9 following the service, bring your potluck lunch in the sanctuary. Questions, comments? Contact: [email protected] ________________________________________________________________________________________

FUTURE SUNDAYS

Supporters can reload their card and pay for the reloads with cash, check, debit, or credit cards at any time, at any Kroger store, for any amount up to $500 at Customer Service or $100 by cashiers. • Reloads have to be a separate transaction from use. Cards with $0 balance are deleted from the system after 90 days and cannot be reactivated. A new card will have to be assigned and purchased from Horizon for $1. • Card is accepted in all Kroger stores and its affiliates throughout the US. It can be sent to family and friends out-of-state and still benefits Horizon, as long as the card is reloaded and used. Keep track of your card balance: At the bottom of your last receipt, call 866-822-6252 or on-line using the PIN on the back of the card. • Reload and use often! Horizon earns a 5% rebate on your purchases! BONUS: Now used ones don’t go in the trash.
