Application area

RED615, member of ABB’s 615 product series, is a phase-segregated two-end line differential protection and control IED perfectly harmonized for utility and industrial power systems, including looped and meshed distribution networks with or without decentralized power generation. Re-engineered from the ground up, the new 615 series has been designed to unleash the full potential of the IEC 61850 standard for communication and interoperability of substation automation equipment.

RED615 provides phase-segregated high speed, longitudinal differential protection for overhead line and cable feeders in distribution networks. Two RED615s interconnected over a communication link form an absolutely selective unit protection scheme. Protection of ring-type and meshed distribution networks generally requires unit protection solutions, also applied in radial networks containing distributed power generation. Typical RED615 applications include two or multiple parallel lines between substations, meshed cable networks of urban and suburban areas. Line differential protection is also applied to industrial power systems and special object, such as power systems for road and rail tunnels and cable networks of wind turbine farms.

Protection and control

RED615 features two-stage, phase-segregated line differential protection, four-stage phase overcurrent protection, two-stage phase unbalance and loss-of-phase protection, and circuit-breaker failure protection. Further, RED615 incorporates a lockout relay and a second harmonic restraint function to identify inrush current conditions.

Besides protection RED615 also offers the functionality needed for local and remote control of one circuit breaker.

Binary signal transfer

Binary signal transfer (BST) can be used for carrying blocking and intertrip signals as well as status and position information between the local and remote end of the line. The BST functionality features eight binary signals, which are carried between the substations inside protection telegrams transferred over the communication link. The transfer of BST signals is bidirectional and the signal transfer time is extremely short, just a few milliseconds. BST signalling and the logics of RED615 enable adaptive protection and control schemes to be engineered to create tomorrow’s smart power systems.

Standardized communication

RED615 features native support for the new IEC 61850 standard for communication in substations. The relay also supports the industry standard Modbus® protocol 3.0.

The in-depth implementation of the IEC 61850 substation communication standard in RED615 also includes horizontal peer-to-peer communication over a substation-wide Ethernet LAN using the GOOSE-services defi ned by the standard.

Protection communication supervision

The communication channel between either end of the protected line is constantly supervised. Should the communication channel be interrupted or suffer interference the fast-acting line differential protection functions will be restrained immediately. The automatic restraint affects all functions which rely on the continuous availability of the protection communication channel. The channel supervision includes recognition of missing or delayed telegrams carrying sampled analog measurement values or binary information.

The sensitivity of the supervision function and the reset delay are user-selectable. Prolonged interferences and a total interruption of the communication channel will trig an alarm message, which can be used to alert the network operator and to release a back-up protection scheme.

Pre-emptive monitoring

To secure the operational availability of the protection, RED615 incorporates a range of monitoring and watch-dog functions to supervise the hardware and software, the communication system and the circuit-breaker trip circuit.

Hardware supervision also incorporates the current transformers. CT faults may cause undesired operation of the line differential protection and the phase unbalance protection. Hence, a fast-acting CT supervision system blocks the operation of the line differential protection function and the phase unbalance protection function on detection of any CT signal anomaly.

Rapid set-up and commissioning

Due to the ready-made adaptation of RED615 for the protection of overhead lines and cable feeders, the RED615 can be rapidly set up and commissioned, once it has been given the application-specifi c settings. If adjustments of the application-specifi c settings are needed the fl exibility of the RED615 allows the standard signal confi guration to be altered by means of the signal matrix tool (SMT) included in the PCM600 IED setting and confi guration tool.

By means of Connectivity Packages containing detailed descriptions of ABB’s protection IEDs, with data signals, parameters and addresses, the IEDs can be automatically confi gured via the MicroSCADA Pro system, the COM600 Station Automation series devices or the PCM600 IED setting and confi guration tool.

Unique plug-in design

The plug-in design speeds up installation and testing of the protection. The factory-tested RED615 plug-in units can be withdrawn from their case during factory and commissioning tests. The case provides automatic short-circuiting of the CT secondary circuits to prevent hazardous voltages from arising in the CT secondary circuits when a plug-in unit is withdrawn from its case.

The handle locking the plug-in unit into its case can be provided with a seal to prevent unintentional withdrawal of the plug-in unit.
