Words to Know

Los animales by James Metzger

Build BackgroundRead the title to children and encourage them to use their knowledge of animals to think about the book. Ask questions such as the following: ¿Cuál es su animal favorito? ¿Dónde vive? ¿Cómo es?

Introduce the TextGuide children through the text, noting important ideas, and helping with unfamiliar language and vocabulary so they can read the text successfully. Here are some suggestions:

Pages 2–3: Explain that this book gives facts about different kinds of animals.

Words to KnowHave children turn to the Palabras que quiero saber at the back of the book. Read each word aloud and then together. Explain any unknown words. Tell children to look for these words as they read.

ReadAs children read, observe them carefully. Guide them as needed, using language that supports their problem solving ability.

Respond to the TextPersonal ResponseAsk children to share their personal responses to the book. Begin by asking what they liked best about the book, or what they found interesting.Suggested language: ¿Los sorprendió descubrir que las personas también son animales? ¿Por qué sí? ¿Por qué no?

Ways of ThinkingAs you discuss the text, make sure children understand these teaching points:

Thinking Within the Text Thinking Beyond the Text Thinking About the Text

• Polar bears live in cold places.

• The parrot lives in a hot place.

• Whales live in the water.

• Elephants live in the forest.

• People live in houses.

• Animals live in many different places.

• People are animals too.

• The photos show different animals and where they live.

• The author uses precise words to describe animals.

• The last page is a surprise, because it shows a person.

Choices for SupportConcepts of PrintRemind children that every sentence begins with a capital letter and ends with a punctuation mark.

Phonemic Awareness/PhonicsProvide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities:

• Plurals of Nouns Say the following nouns and have children say their plurals: oso, ratón, pájaro, ballena, elefante, pez. Then, have them mention other animals they know and write their answers on the board. Have volunteers say the plural of each noun.

• Clapping Syllables Have children hear and say syllables in words from the book: plumas, trompa, agua, selva, ballenas, elefantes.

Writing About ReadingVocabulary PracticeRead the directions and have children complete the Vocabulario questions on Hoja reproducible 15.1.

RespondingHave children complete the vocabulary activities on page 11.

Building VocabularyDescribing WordsBuild on the adjectives in Los animales. Suggested language: Pensemos en distintas palabras para describir animales. El oso polar tiene pelaje blanco y garras afi ladas. La palabra blanco describe el pelaje del oso y la palabra afi lada describe sus garras. Pensemos en otras maneras de describir al oso. As children suggest adjectives, write their words and sentences on the board or on a long strip of paper. Begin the list with the sentence frame El oso tiene ___ y ___. Continue the list with other animals in the book.

(Possible suggestions: patas grandes, orejas redondas, nariz negra, ojos pequeños.)

After children have made their suggestions, read the list aloud together, pointing to each word. ¡Miren todas las palabras que hay para describir distintos animales!

Writing Prompt: Thinking Beyond the TextRead aloud the directions on writing prompt on page 6 and have children draw and write a response.

Draw a picture of your favorite animal.

Write a sentence that tells what the animal looks like.
