The silkworm moth has been bred for thousands of years in the orient. These delicate moths have hooked forewing tips and visible wing veins. Most moths are white, though some arebrown.

    BEGINNINGSTAGES : The

silkworm caterpillar is commonly white withbrown markings. It has pinkish eyespots onits back.

FOOD : Silkworm moths feed on whitemulberry leaves. Although there are other types of mulberry leaves, it is the whitemulberry leaf Morus Alba that a silkworm requires for food.

DISTRIBUTION : All silkworms are reared domestically or in commercialindustries. It is believed the silkmoth industry began over 2,000 years ago in China.

HERE ARE approximately 300 species of silkworm moths. These moths are mostly located in the orient.T

Moths in the Bombycidae family have rounded and furry bodies.

Many species have forewings with a slightly hooked tip.

They do not have developed mouth parts.

As adults they do not feed.

The caterpillars have fleshy bodies and a single fleshy horn at their tails.

Their pupae are formed within silken cocoons.

    Tiny Treasures

    International

Another legend states in 552 A.D., Persian Christianmonks visiting

Khotan hid silkworm eggs in hollow pilgrimcanes and smuggled the creature to Byzantium.

Silkworm production eventually traveled to Persia, Korea, India, Greece and Japan.

Around the 10th century, Spain obtained silkworms and by the 12th century, Italy alsobecame involved in the silk trade.

In the 15th century the French imported the skill and techniques for silk production from

Italy. French kings encouraged the silk trade and the city of Lyons became one of the most important centers for the production and trade of silk.

I was just a child when we lived in Japan. One of our trips was to a silkworm factory. Insidea huge room were great bins holding silkworms in various stages of development. What I remember was how noisy the room was - all the silkworms chomping. An unbelievableexperience!

    DID YOU KNOW???

Each caterpillar will eat for approximately 26 days prior to spinning its silken

    cocoon.

A silkworm will take approximately 3 days to

completely spin a cocoon and turn into a pupa.

After about 21 days the moth will emerge. If it is a female, it will lay its eggs

    about two days later.Sam

    The thread that changedhistory

    Historic

Silk production eventually spread throughout Europe. In En-gland, James I encouraged silk production after seeing the success of the industry in Florence, Venice and Lyons. The mulberry bush wasalready growing well in England allowing the worms to have a readysupply of food. The towns of London, Whitechapel, Stepney, BethnelGreen and Spitalfields developed into thriving silk production centers.

One of the main reasons Sericulture (the craft of producing silk and its cloth) , had a successfullife in England was in part due to religious persecution. Many Flemish and French weavers fled toEngland to continue their lives without fear. It was in the town of Spitalfields in the 1620s that anindustrial silk center developed.

CRAZY F OR S ILKCongress encouragesilk production up anddown the Atlanticcoast with hopes of creating a frenzysimilar to the Tulip

    Bulb Craze in 17thcentury Holland.

This madnesseventually made thevalue of the treesmore than the value of the silk producedfrom them.

    Around 1840, the

market crashed andmany lost fortunesand distraught farmersdestroyed theirmulberry orchards.

No surprise - silk production soonended.

People rushed to invest money innew varieties of mulberry trees.Records show in 1834, one yearold mulberry trees sold for $3 -$5.00 per hundred. In no time theprice rose to $500.00 perhundred.

Unbelievably , two treeseventually sold for $100.00 each.
