PowerPoint Presentation

On the Edge of a Social Studies Revolution!

Welcome! My name is Sarah Coleman and I am a 5th grade teacher at Dearington Elementary School for Innovation in Lynchburg, Virginia. Getting students engaged and interested in Social Studies and for me, particularly, Virginia Studies, is always a challenge. Learning about what happened in the 1600s is just not interesting to elementary age students. Or so they thought! Throughout this presentation I will be presenting information and tools that could be used in your social studies class to create a more interactive and engaging Social Studies class. None of these tools are limited to social studies but that is where my mind automatically goes to because I am the only 4th and 5th grade Virginia Studies teacher at my school! This slide shows a tagxedo illustration. This was created by me asking my 5th graders at the end of the school year what words make them think about Social Studies or Virginia Studies. You simply then go to tagxedo.com, choose the shape youd like the words to be in and insert the text. You can choose the color, font, and size. This is an interesting way to display words that can be related. 1

Blabberizehttp://blabberize.com/Make speech bubbles more interactive!

Blabberize is a very easy to use site where one just has to upload an image, this one here is George Washington, choose the location of the mouth, and either record vocals or download something for it to say. All social Studies curriculum is heavy on people. Important people, where they went, what they did, and where they came from. From third grade explorers to Virginia Studies founding fathers, blabberize could be used to show an image of the person and then have it say important facts that relate to that person. 2
