Subtopic: “A VISIT TO DUDLEY ZOO IN ”WEST MIDLANDS”

LEVEL –PRE-INTERMEDIATE

Objectives: to develop students’ skills and habits of prepared and unprepared speech; to teach students to express their opinion; to develop students’ skills in reading; to develop students’ skills in listening; to develop students’ skills in writing; to teach students to respect the wildlife; to encourage students to take care of environment.

Materials and aids: a piece of background music, a tape-recorder, “English-6” by A. Nesvit coursebooks, pictures with the views of Zoos in different countries, a poster with animals, a box, badges with penguins and lions, a toy-penguin, a toy-lion, maps of Dudley Zoo, cards, PP presentation or videofilm about Dudley Zoo.

PROCEDURE

I. Greeting. Warming up.T: Good morning, ladies and gentlemen! I’m glad to see you. Today I invite you to the world of animals. We’ll find out what animals people like and what influence they have on our lives. By the way, raise your hands,

- Who has got pets at home?- Do you like your pets?- Are your pets wild or domestic animals?

Possible answers:S1: I have got a parrot. It lives in the cage. It’s a wild bird.

S2: I have got a dog. It’s name is King. It is a domestic animal. It lives in our flat.

III. Practice a) Brain StormingT: So, let’s go to the zoo. Do you know any zoos in our country and abroad?

S4: I like to watch cartoons. My favourite cartoon is “Madagascar”. It tells about the adventures of animals which live at the zoo in New-York. So I can say, there is a big zoo in New-York.

S5: From the lessons of Geography I have learnt about big safari parks in Africa and Australia.

S6: Last year we were in Yalta. We visited Yalta Zoo. It was great!

T: You are right. There is a zoo in almost every big city. Do you know that there are about 900 zoos in the world; 12 zoos in Ukraine, 220 zoos in the USA and 37 zoos in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.Now I invite you to go to Birmingham zoo and have a virtual excursion there. Let’s start with the history of this unique place.

box with the badges. Take a badge from the box. Those who have got the badge with a lion sit here, at the table where the lion is on. Those who have got the badge with a penguin, sit at the table where the penguin is on. Choose the leader of your group. Every group has a task.

Dudley Zoo is based at The Broadway, Dudley, in the West Midlands, not far from Birmingham on a lovely 40-acre site boasting both a ruined medieval castle and a rolling park with over 160 species of animals and some 900 creatures, making for a wonderfully varied and informative family day out. Dudley Zoo is in the grounds of Dudley Castle, the Zoological Society having been founded in 1935, with the family attraction opening to the public two years later. The family attraction additionally boasts a range of native and exotic animal species kept in enclosures, tanks and in the Zoo’s own farmyard. These include Alpacas, Reindeers, Goats, Pigs, Sheep, a variety of slithering Snakes, dwarf Crocodiles, numerous Lizards, Tapirs, Porcupines, Gazelle, Oryx, Babirusa,

Squirrels, Wallabies, squawking Parrots, a good number of Frogs, a hatful of Spiders of all shapes and sizes, Flamingos, Cockroaches, Terrapins, Chinchillas and BooBook owls.

S10: Stop! We mustn’t feed the animals and birds at the zoo. It can do them harm.

S9: Oh, I’ve forgotten about zoo rules, but you are right.

S11: Here we are at last. It’s very high.S12: Listen, the wind is blowing. I’m

is magnificent! All the animals and visitors are so tiny.

S12: Look at the cage of meerkats. We almost can’t see them, and those teenagers at the cage look like little children.

-monologueT: Visiting zoo, everyone enjoys different animals. People say – Tastes are

different. It’s true. Some of you like birds, some of you like snakes. Other children want to see lions and bears. Using the map, tell us the way to your favourite animal or bird. Don’t name the animal. Your classmates have to guess, where you are going to. Keep turns. That person, who can guess, continues. We are here, at the stairs, near the Reptile House.
