Junior School News Last Tuesday the Junior School held an assembly, run by Mrs Filsell and the children in J1. This term we are trialling holding Junior School

assemblies on Tuesday afternoon (lesson 5, at 1:25pm). Over the last few weeks the Junior School have been involved in fundraising activities to support the Aerobics teams who will be competing in Sydney later in the term. Students participated in the school Fun Run and many raised money through being sponsored for their participation on the day. Last Friday students enjoyed a Junior School Disco, which also raised funds for the Aerobics teams. Congratulations to the many families and staff for their fundraising efforts. Many thanks to Bradlee Wilkinson and the students of our Aerobics teams for their determination and the hours of work they have contributed to fundraising for this event. Good luck to all of the Ocean View College teams when they compete in Sydney. Next week Junior School students will be participating in a Life Education lesson in the Life Education Van. Classes will visit the van throughout the week with their class teacher. On Tuesday in lesson 5 (1:25pm) the van will be open for parents/caregivers to visit. Please call into the van during this time, meet the Life Education teacher and have a chat about your child’s Life Education experience. Life Education is part of the Term 3 Health curriculum for Junior School students and all students are expected to attend. The cost for Life Education is subsidised through BP funding and the Junior School budget, therefore there will be a minimal cost of $2.00 (GST free) per student. Please return the permission slip and $2.00 (GST free) to the Junior School office if you haven’t already done so. Book Week is in Week 6 - the theme is ‘Champions Read’. Year 6/7 Woodhouse Camp On Monday the 25th June the Year 6/7s went on camp at Woodhouse Activities Centre. On Monday we had to arrive at school at about 8:30am to wait for the bus. The bus came at 9:00am and we all boarded it ready for our long bus ride to Woodhouse. When we arrived we had to go into the activity room in the old house we stayed in. We were all put into separate groups ready to start our activities. There were three groups - the koalas, kookaburras and the possums. We did many different enjoyable activities including Laser Skirmish, Crafting, Orienteering and many more. In between our activities we ate breakfast, morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. After dinner one night we played spotlight!

We played 2 different enjoyable games of spotlight. One night we had a fire and we sat around it before we ate dinner. “ Spotlight was really fun when I started shuffling in the forest” It was extremely cold and windy, it rained a lot as well, a lot of our shoes were wrecked and wet from the mud and slippery surfaces. However, the scenery was beautiful, there were many trees and flowers. There was also a creek running past the old house we stayed in. Going across the creek was a log and there were many waterfalls and bridges we could climb on. “We lined up in a single file and he gave us our guns” [Laser Skirmish] We were lucky enough to find a koala and three kookaburras on our journeys. We named the kookaburras Dip, Cheese and Cracker. “There were lots of cool trees and we saw a koala. It was amazing…” Sadly we had to leave Woodhouse on Wednesday 27th to arrive back at school on time. We arrived back at school at about 3:00pm. We were all super tired and we couldn’t wait to go home but we also didn’t want the camp to end. “ It was the best three days of my life!” The camp overall was magnificent to say the least! Everyone who came enjoyed themselves majorly. Even the teachers had a lot of fun and we also learnt a lot at the same time. I know a lot of us wish it could have gone for even longer that just 3 days because we enjoyed it that much. “ We didn't have to do any work. Yay! I want to do it again!!!” Special thanks to Mr McGaffin, Ms Ryan and Addy for supporting our classes and teachers on this camp.

Health and Well Being Peer Mediators/Best Buddies Our Year 10 Peer Mediators are nearing the completion of their training and they are eagerly waiting to begin

their work in the Junior School and the Children’s Centre. They are also organising and hosting the Book Week Parade on 21st August. These students are also joining with our Year 3/4 Best Buddies for one lesson a week to consolidate our Peer Leadership programs. The Best Buddies are continuing to do an amazing job mentoring the new Receptions in Ms Switala’s class. They join up for one lesson each week to support them in class, doing lots of work around friendship and inclusion. Our Best Buddies are also paired with any new students who commence in the Junior School. They work on a special passport with the new students to help them become more familiar with aspects of the College. World Vision Congratulations to our World Vision Ambassadors for presenting an excellent assembly last week. It was very moving, listening to the real life stories and experiences of Jaccinta Clarke, the World vision Ambassador for South Australia. This year the 40 Hour Famine will focus on helping Ethiopia, a country desperately in need of our help. Here are some facts that our World Vision Ambassadors

presented at a staff meeting - they really highlight the difference between our standard of living and theirs. The life expectancy of Australians is 82. In

Ethiopia, it is only 59. Ethiopia is only slightly larger than South

Australia, but their population is 85 million (Australia’s is around 21 million).

Children average only 1.5 years of schooling (compared to 12 in Australia)

In Australia the number of children who die under five years of age is 5 per 1000 births. In Ethiopia, it is a massive 104.

Please support the 40 Hour Famine. So far, we have had about 60 students sign up which is a great effort. BUT if we want to beat our record of $5,000 from last year, we’ll all need to work really hard! It’s really interesting to hear about all the different things students are planning to go without for the 40 Hour Famine (so far I’ve heard furniture, technology, talking and food!). Team Pick Up The wonderful students who are volunteering to be part of this amazing team are continuing to do an outstanding job and the yard has never looked better. Each lunch time teams of students from Reception - Year 10 dressed in purple ‘team pick-up’ t-shirts and equipped with tongs and buckets ‘hit’ the yard like little vacuum cleaners. They are amazing and so motivated and enthusiastic! Thank you to all of them and to Jody Macri who coordinates it. Middle School’s Got Talent Our auditions are complete and the date has been set! It’s all happening in the Gym at 12:00 noon on Friday 31st August. Parents are most welcome! Parent Group The Parent Group had an enjoyable, fun time at IKEA today. We are planning more outings, so why not be part of the fun. We meet every Monday morning at 9.00am in THE HUB centre. Staff Feedback In life, people are often quick to let others know when they are not happy with someone or something. This occurs in all walks of life, and, while it’s good to be able to let others know if we are disgruntled, some parents recently mentioned to me that they’d like to be able to also let people know when they are happy about something. These parents were specifically talking about teachers, adding that they were unsure how to pass on their ‘positive vibes’. They didn’t have the time, nor were they sure of how to go writing a letter so we’ve come up with the idea of a ‘Happygram’. If you would like to pass on a quick, positive message to a teacher, please fill in the Happygram at the end of the newsletter and send it to any of the 4 College offices. It would be greatly appreciated by staff. If you’d like extra ones, they can be collected at any of the 4 offices.

Drama For the first time this year Year 12 Drama has been taught as a Federation of Schools subject and OVC and Le Fevre High School students together have been working hard to produce this show. So now finally the time has come; the most anticipated show on the Drama calendar is ready for the public. Students have been watching with interest as the set has gone up bit by bit, they have seen snippets of performances and costumes and heard about the special effects but now it is time to put it all together and experience the whole show. The Year 12 Group Production “Blithe Spirit” is an improbable farce by Noël Coward and concerns socialite and novelist Charles Condomine, who invites the eccentric medium and clairvoyant, Madame Arcati, to his house to conduct a séance, hoping to gather material for his next book. The scheme backfires when he is haunted by the ghost of his annoying and

temperamental first wife, Elvira, following the séance. Elvira makes continual attempts to disrupt Charles' marriage to his second wife, Ruth, who cannot see or hear the ghost. This show will be performed on Wednesday 15th, Thursday 16th and Friday 17th August in the OVC Drama Room at 7:30pm each evening. Tickets are $6.00 per person and can be purchased at the door! Please come along and enjoy some ghostly fun as walls rattle, doors fly open, paintings fall off walls, curtains crash, ornaments smash, and tables rise in the air on their own - ooooohhhhhh spooky! We look forward to seeing you in our audience next week!

Kyla Booth - Drama Teacher/Arts Coordinator Music It’s been a busy start to Term 3….nothing new for the Music Department! Thank you to the many family and friends who attended the 2012 OVC Cabaret on Saturday 28th July. It was fantastic to see so many people enjoying themselves….just have a look at the page of photos! Both current Year 9 - 12 students and former OVC Music students performed a wide variety of Music and had the crowd dancing and singing along. Thanks also to Chay Cowley for a very entertaining Magic show….just how did he make all those things disappear?

***** ***** ***** ***** ***** ***** On Monday 30th July, 12 of our Year 3 - 7 string players performed a variety of tunes for staff and students at the Children’s Centre. For the students who only started learning their instrument this year this was their first time performing in front of an audience. They all did really well managing their parts at a high standard and from memory. Well done also to the students who came confidently out to the front of the stage to demonstrate what their instruments looked like up close and how they worked. The young children particularly enjoyed seeing if they were as tall as a cello. Students who participate in the OVC Music program work hard in their weekly instrumental lesson and obviously spend valuable time practising and fine tuning their skills at home. All this enables students to share their skills and experience a sense of achievement as their Music brings fun and joy to their listeners. As ever, I am very grateful to Mrs Kathy Baker (Music Coordinator) and staff at Ocean View for continuing to support these students in their musical journey.

Resource Centre Spot: Our Resource Centre has seen some changes in staffing, following the retirement of our long standing Teacher/Librarian, Mr Colin Philips. Our new team is made up of Ms Sarah Bennett (Teacher/Librarian), Ms Karen McInnes (Teacher/Librarian), Ms Rhonda Mooney (SSO) and Ms Glenyss Richardson (SSO). We issue a warm wlecome for everyone to call in and say hello and look forward to assisting you with any any queries you may have. Book Week 2012 is nearly here (Week 6). Book Week is an annual event that has been running for the past 67 years. It is a celebration of authors and a short list of books are selected by the Children’s Book Council of Australia for us to enjoy until the winners for this year are determined for each of the following categories: Picture Book Early Childhood Younger Readers Older Readers Every year the Children’s Book Council of Australia announces the theme for the year. This year our theme for Book Week is "Champions Read!" What a fabulous theme: to be running alongside the London Olympics where our Aussie champions are over there going for gold! Still, we know that being a sports hero isn’t the only way to be a champion. There are champions in many different areas of life - our caregivers are our daily champions, we have champion

readers in our school, champions who help others in our school and community. Champions have qualities of never giving up and striving to achieve even when the odds might be tough. Champions tough things out and keep persevering until they reach their goals. We would love to celebrate our champions with you at our special Book Week events.

Rock Climbing Team Rock Climb: Ben and Chelsea Poulish, Brandon Miller, Mitchell Hodder, Kathryn Wojick, Chloe Baker, Culann Howson, Andrew Johns, Harry Edwards and Alex Muus. We sent a team of 10 students to the western Zone Rock Climbing Carnival to defend our championship (which we have won for the past 2 years). Eight schools and 90 students took part in a highly successful event. After a morning of practice students were required to perform 4 speed climbs on 4 different walls. From there times get added together to give an overall school result and 8 male and female students go on to contest the finals. Unfortunately we just missed out claiming the title this year with Seaton just taking first by only a few seconds. In the girls final Chelsea Poulish came in 3rd place whilst brother Ben slipped in the last meter to finish an agonising second. Harry Edwards finished in 4th overall. Although we relinquished the title our students efforts and sportsmanship were outstanding. We had a number of Year 10 and younger Year 8s who proved to be very skilful and our future looks bright.

Sailing Our annual Sailing BBQ took place on Friday of Week 2 with a group of over 30 students, staff and parents meeting at the Cruising Yacht Club of South

Australia. This is an important event in our Sailing calendar as it allows new parents to come and find out information and mix with seasoned parents. Again we took some of our program supporters and sponsors out for a sail on Marine Academy 1 at the CYCSA before the BBQ. Whilst the weather was a little fresh our students demonstrated their knowledge and skills in handling a 40 foot keelboat. Thanks to Brian and Chris from Clutterham Engineering, Andy (supporter) and Brett Yardley from the CYCSA for taking us out. The support of local business and the community is so vital in giving our students opportunities in the local community. The extended Sailing Program will hopefully begin in Week 6 this term with students sending in application letters which will be read by a panel for selection purposes. This Squad will train twice a week in Terms 3 and 4 and will demonstrate a significant commitment to attendance and development. Thank you to Mr McLaren for his support of our Sailing program and well done to Chelsea, Chris and Ryan and Ben whose presentation was of the highest standard. The rest of the Sailing team will begin training in Term 4 with dates to be set shortly. The other major

event is the Sailing Camp which is Week 9 Wednesday to Friday. Hope you all watch our Australian sailors do the sport and our country proud.

Connecting students to apprenticeships and traineeships Meet our Apprenticeship Brokers We are pleased to introduce Michael Scarman who is the new Apprenticeship Broker for the Western Adelaide Trade Schools for the Future working alongside Vicki Bryant in the facilitation of School-based apprenticeships. What is an Australian School-based Apprenticeship? An Australian School-based Apprenticeship (ASbA) is a great way to start your career while completing your SACE. ASbA’s enable senior school students to combine paid work, training and school, towards their SACE and a nationally-recognised qualification. Students undertaking ASbA’s commence a Contract of Training through a part time Apprenticeship or Traineeship. They learn skills (competencies) on-the-job and through training with a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). Our Apprenticeship Brokers work with students from each of our DECD schools (Western Adelaide), and connect students with School-based Apprenticeships. Please see the Senior School Office to make an appointment with one of our Apprenticeship Brokers. Please visit the ‘School-based Apprenticeships’ section at www.wats.sa.edu.au for more information. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Happy gram Would you like to say something positive about a staff member?
