“In our last lesson, we learned that we can prevent violence when we recognize and report concerning behaviors. In today’s lesson, we’re going to learn the H.E.R.O. safety strategy – HIDE!”

“To begin learning this strategy, I want you to read Chapter 2 of Real Life Heroes.”

Have the students read Chapter 2 of Real Life Hereos.

“Raise your hand if you’ve ever been in a situation where you felt unsafe.”

“When you don’t know what to do, you don’t FEEL safe. When you don’t know what to do, you AREN’T safe.”

This curriculum is designed to teach survival skills as well as empowerment and safe-thinking strategies simultaneously. The teacher can feel free to modify the guidelines for most of the lesson with the exception of the body portion. The body portion has

been carefully crafted with the input of safety and survival experts. It is important to teach this part of the lesson as scripted.

SOCIAL DISTANCING RECOMMENDATIONS Lessons include various activities to reinforce learned concepts. Follow school or district guidelines for social distancing in the classroom. Students should only engage in activities individually. For instance, select one student to “model” the suggested

H.E.R.O. strategy for the rest of the students.

This lesson is similar to the typical “Lockdown” procedure. Regardless of how your door(s) lock (automatically or manually), it is CRITICAL the door gets locked as soon as possible.

IF your door(s) can only be locked from the outside, assess the situation before opening the door(s). After you lock the door(s), make sure to turn out the lights, lock any windows and

block the view into the room.

“There are specific skills you can learn that will keep you safe and help you feel safer.”

“That’s why we are going to learn what to do if we find ourselves in a dangerous situation. These skills are IMPORTANT!”

“To help you remember – they’ve been put into a simple word. And believe me, if you were in a dangerous situation, you’d need it to be simple.”

“So, here they are…”

Write the following on the board or use the accompanying visual aid slide 2 so students can see:

H – HIDE! E – ESCAPE! R – RUN!

O – OVERCOME!

“Today we are going to learn how to HIDE!”

Project visual aid slide 3.

“Today we’re going to learn how to HIDE from a violent intruder. There’s more to hiding than just ‘lockdown’, and today we’re going to learn 3 specific strategies to HIDE safely.”

Project visual aid slide 4.

Have the class break up into 3 groups. Give each group one of the three HIDE! Factsheets.

Each group will study their Factsheet for 5-10 minutes. Their tasks will be:

1. Present the information in their group’s Factsheet to the whole class

2. Demonstrate the strategy to the whole class

Visual aid slides have been provided to supplement each group’s presentation. There is one slide for each group. These slides incorporate critical aspects of the strategy. They also include photographs or graphics which help reinforce the concept. These slides can be displayed either while the group presents or as a wrap-up after each group’s demonstration, depending on teacher preference.

Hiding Strategy #1: Lock the door and build a barricade!

Project visual aid side 5.

“The first thing to do when hiding is build a barricade!” Have the first group come to the front of the class. Use the follow questions for help the group with class discussion and demonstration.

Q: “What can we use to barricade the doors and windows?”

A: “We would use ALL of those things and pile them in a BIG knot! Those seated closest to the doors will build the barricade.”

If your classroom door has a window: “What can we use to block the windows of our classroom so an intruder can’t see inside?”

“Once we’ve barricaded a room, we DO NOT let anyone in! It’s just too dangerous! It could be a trick, or we may not have enough time to rebuild our barricade.”

Consider the layout of windows in your classroom. If you have a small window in your door, you may want to have a piece of cardboard or a poster near the window to cover it

during an emergency. Larger windows are more difficult to cover quickly, but as you continue this lesson, you’ll learn additional strategies that can help you and your

students stay out of sight.

Project visual aid slide 6.

“But what if you’re stuck outside? Keep running! Don’t waste time trying to get into locked rooms. Find another Hideout or Holdout!”

“And remember, when hiding, it’s very important to silence our cell phones and refrain from using them. You can save your life, or you can try to get “InstaFamous,” but you can’t do both!”

Hiding Strategy #2:

Find a Safety Triangle!

Project visual aid slide 7.

“Safety Triangles can keep us safe from projectiles entering a room. Now, let’s learn more about Safety Triangles in this room.”

Have the second group come to the front of the class. Use the follow questions for help the group with class discussion and demonstration.

Project visual aid slide 8.

Q: “Where are the safety triangles in this room?”

Allow for student discussion to identify where they believe the safety triangles in the visual aid.

It is MUCH faster (and hence safer) for a student to find an alternative hiding place than un-barricading and re-barricading a classroom. Remember, if someone (even a student) tries to get in your classroom AFTER you’ve barricaded it, DO NOT open the door. Make

sure students know doors won’t be opened once they’re locked and barricaded. Make sure students know not to waste time trying to get into locked classrooms. Instead, they should

RUN!

Project visual aid slide 9.

A: “Correct! The two corners of the room where we cannot be seen through the window of the door.”

Q: “Now that we know what Safety Triangles are, look around our classroom. Where are the Safety Triangles in OUR room?”

Have students identify Safety Triangles in the classroom. Remind them not everyone has to be in the same Safety Triangle.

Hiding Strategy #3: Know the difference between a Hideout and Holdout!

“Let’s learn the difference between a Hideout and a Holdout.”

Project visual aid slide 10. Have the third group come to the front of the class. Use the follow questions for help the group with class discussion and demonstration.

“Hideouts keep you hidden from sight – out of sight, out of mind. And while Hideouts can keep us out of an attacker’s sights, they don’t provide any protection from dangerous projectiles.

“Holdouts keep you hidden from sight and provide you with protection from dangerous projectiles.”

“Now, we are going to practice this strategy!”

VISUAL AID 9

Safety Triangles are areas that provide geometric protection from projectiles, which only travel in a straight line. Remember, the door(s) are the most likely place a projectile could

enter a room. If you need help identifying Safety Triangles in a particular area, refer back to the H.E.R.O. professional development video (HIDE! segment) or contact your H.E.R.O.

Expert for further guidance.

“This is what I will be looking for as we practice this activity. When we are done, we will see how well we did.”

“When I give you the signal to HIDE! Don’t come out until I give you the all-clear signal.”

This is the all-clear signal.”

(Demonstrate the signal used in your school.)

“Ready? Here we go!”

Give the signal. “HIDE! HIDE! HIDE!”

Give the all-clear signal after all students have found a hiding place.

HIDE! A stronger response than freeze!

Using the rubric as a reference, have them self-assess their effort to HIDE safely.

Keep all rubrics to evaluate progress. These serve as documentation of the practiced skill and a copy should be kept for yourself and school administration.

“Today, you learned several different HIDE! strategies that teach you this Empowerment Strategy: HIDE! A stronger response than freeze!”

Project visual aid slide 13.

“In the next lesson, we’ll continue learning the H.E.R.O. safety strategies!”

“So far, we have learned to prevent violence by there are stronger strategies for hiding safely. In the next few lessons, we’ll learn three more strategies that can help you be safe and help you feel safe.”
