Jesus had compassion on her
From the Rectory
The other Sunday the New Testament reading was the account of Jesus healing the widow’s son in the town called Nain. This was just a chance encounter. Jesus and his disciples were entering the town with a large crowd following them. As they approached the gate a man who died was being carried out. He was his mother’s only son and she was a widow.
With the entire crowd around him it might have been easy for Jesus to miss the sad procession going in the other direction. His entry was causing an enormous amount of noise and excitement. But even amongst large crowds’ Jesus appears to have had the ability to focus on one person’s need and be able to do something about it. He immediately realised and understood the widow’s distress. As the Bible says ‘when the Lord saw her he had compassion for her and said to her, do not weep’. Then he came forward and touched the bier on which the body lay, whilst the bearers stood still. You can imagine how dramatic the scene would have been as a hush came over the large crowd. Jesus says to the young man “arise” and he gives him to his mother.
This was a simple act of kindness. Jesus saw a need and reacted to it. If you are going to quibble about the story then you could say that the widow and her son were lucky to be in the right place at the right time and what about all the other widows who had also lost sons? But such reservations miss the point of the story.
As Christians we are called to follow our Lord’s pattern of life. As he had compassion on this widow, so should we have compassion on those in need amongst whom we live. We may not be able to bring somebody back to life but we can all, in whatever situation we are, do our best to look after and help those amongst whom we live. Simple acts of kindness can mean so much to other people and are often so easy for us to do.
The famous American novelist Henry James was once asked, when he was an old man, did he have a formula for how one should live one’s life. His answer was ‘be kind, be kind and then be kind’. Words for all of us to dwell upon.

Very well done in these troubled time. 2011 total was £194.98 so a very nice improvement. Charity horse ride at Sandringham
On 12 May there was a Charity horse ride around parts of the Sandringham estate, which raised £2,900 for Sandringham and West Newton churches. We are very grateful to Anne Holt and her team for working so hard to make this event such a success. We are also very grateful to the Sandringham estate for kindly allowing access to parts of the estate are not normally open to the public.

Canon George Hall Canon George Hall will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood. He will be presiding at a Eucharist in Sandringham church at 11 o’clock that morning. We hope as many as possible will be able to gather together to help him celebrate this very special occasion. West Norfolk Disability Forum The West Norfolk Disability Forum was initially established by the Borough Council of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk in 1981 and comprises of Borough Councillors, individu-als with disabilities, representatives of people with disabilities, and people concerned with disabilities in the Borough.
If you are working on a project which you feel may have implications for people with disabilities, the Forum are available for you to consult and can provide advice from their perspective.

Share Sale and Investment Fraud Share sale, boiler room, hedge fund or bond fraud involves bogus stockbrokers, usually based overseas, cold calling people to pressure them into buying shares that promise high returns. In reality, the shares are either worthless or non-existent.
You are usually contacted out of the blue by a professional-sounding stockbroker who offers you investment opportunities that seem too good to be true. You are also prom-ised free research reports, special discounts and ‘secret’ stock tips.
In reality, the fraudsters are cold calling as many people as possible, persuading them to invest in shares that are either non-existent, or so worthless they are impossible to sell.
The fraudsters may provide false share certificates and other documents to make the investments seem credible.
Once the fraudsters have squeezed whatever money they can from investors, they quickly disappear.
Share sale frauds tend to start with a telephone call out of the blue. Using hard-sell techniques, the fraudsters try to pressure you into making rushed decisions, giving you no time to consider the nature of the investment.
As with many fraudulent schemes, you’re encouraged to keep your investment secret to ensure you receive maximum returns. This allows the fraudsters to hide the real na-ture of their scheme.
Fraudsters aim to make their business seem legitimate, so they will often use technical jargon, impressive job titles and mock websites to appear credible.
Are you a victim of share sale fraud?
You’ve bought shares from somebody you don’t know over the telephone.
To transact the deal, you’ve given them your bank account details.
What should you do if you’re a victim of share sale fraud?
Report it to Action Fraud.
Break off all contact with the fraudster at once.
Alert your bank immediately if you’ve given the fraudsters your bank account details.
Keep any written communications you’ve received from the share sale fraud-sters. This may help you give evidence to the authorities.
Because many boiler rooms are run from abroad, they’re not covered by UK ju-risdiction or compensation schemes. Therefore, you’re unlikely to recover any lost investment.

Apart from the guided walks mentioned in the last issue (8.30am birds, 11am bumble bees, 2pm butterflies and 5pm ponds), the day includes open walks of varying lengths to take at your own pace. You can start these at any time from 8am to 8pm. They go to the farm’s wetlands, orchid meadows, arable fields and flower-rich grasslands on the chalk hill-tops. Light refresh-ments will be available from midday to 5pm in aid of Little Discoverers who support local chil-dren with motor learning difficulties and delayed development.
All walks are free of charge. Sorry no dogs (except on the public access grassland beside the village sports field).

The helicopter of the East Anglian Air Ambulance and its crew will be at Sandringham, close to the Visitor Centre, from 10.00am to 12noon (approx.). Sandringham is delighted to be welcoming car club enthusiasts from all over the coun-try. Their cars will be displayed at the Visitor Centre and there is no charge to come along and take a look.
For dates see page 30 & 31 Crafts, Art and Sculpture Fair - 9th - 11th August 2013 Living Heritage Craft Shows return to Sandringham in August, and this year sees a change to this very well established event. The scope and aims of the show have been expanded to include more working demonstrations in the new working craft village. Meet them in person as they showcase their individual crafts, and you can find unusual gifts or special pieces for your home, not usually found on the High Street. Skills such as wood turning, glass blowing and lace making will be demonstrated, as well as fal-conry displays, ferret races and puppet shows throughout the day and marquees devot-ed to ceramics, paintings and glass. In addition, the very popular chainsaw carvers will be returning and showing off their skills. This popular show offers a full day out for all the family.

Sandringham Game & Country Fair - 7th-8th September 2013 The Game and Country Fair returns to Sandringham in September. Whole areas de-voted to falconry, fishing, wildfowling, archery and many other country sports and pur-suits, together with lots of activities for families (and their dogs!) makes this event a true celebration of country living.

WEST NEWTON
It is a really such a long time since Mothering Sunday and a completely different climate from now! It was a bitterly cold day with snow showers and a strong Easterly wind. However, it was, as usual a well at-tended Service in West Newton Church and the Sunday School did their play that was enjoyed so much by Her Majesty the Queen at the prize-giving. Mrs Bernice Allen always manages to get the Sunday School pupils to such a high standard in their entertaining play and is well worth repeating for Mother-ing Sunday. At the Service each child was able to present their Mothers with a lovely potted Polyanthus, and, as usual, there were several left over to present to other female members of the congregation!
Another great success was the Horse Riding day organised by Ann Holt and Andrew, her husband. The weather was perfect with all age groups able to take part. The super day managed to raise in excess of £2,000. A great deal of money from a really enjoya-ble day. Very many thanks to Ann and Andrew and all their helpers for such a great contribution to the Church.

Wolferton - Royal Station In February 1862, a large estate at Sandringham was purchased as a private residence for the young Prince of Wales. The eventual residence, Sandringham House, was only 2¼ miles from the site of the Lynn & Hunstanton Railway's projected Wolferton station, and the directors much welcomed this unexpected development.[The royal patronage of the station prompted its reconstruction in 1898 when extensive Tudor-style platform buildings were constructed at a cost of £8,132, including the royal waiting rooms on the Down plat-form which were fitted out with oak-panelling, couches and easy-chairs. The up platform's buildings are similarly impressive, even including a small clocktower. Both platforms are equipped with standard Great Eastern platform canopies, and the ornate platform lamps are topped with miniature crowns.
A 40-lever brick and sandstone signal box was situated to the south of the platforms, con-trolling the northern extremity of the doubled section between Wolferton and King's Lynn, while the single-line section north was controlled by electric train tablet. The goods yard was on the Down side and was served by three sidings; four more sidings were to be found on the Up side. The station's facilities also included a spacious carriage dock, an ornate goods and coal storage building and a small gas works which provided sufficient gas to light the entire station.
Traffic mainly consisted of produce from the royal estate which included farms producing corn, vegetables and flax. Coal for Sandringham House and the outlying villages was also a regular source of traffic. Royal traffic to one side, Wolferton served a relatively rural area (population 234 in 1901) and was never a busy station except during Sandringham House parties. Prior to announcing the closure of the line in 1969, British Rail had enquired as to whether the Queen would be interested in purchasing the royal waiting rooms, which may have become expensive to maintain. She declined, but agreed that King's Lynn would be Sandringham House's nearest railhead, thereby opening the way to the line's closure.
Shortly after its closure, Wolferton was sold in 1967 by British Rail to railwayman Eric Walker. He reopened the royal waiting room in 1970 as a museum to display his 6,000 item collection of royal and historical memorabilia. Walker died in 1985 and his son, Roger Hedly-Walker, wanted to sell the station, ostensibly because he was unable to obtain per-mission from the royal estate to erect a larger sign advertising the museum and that the 18,000 annual visitors per year, Hedly-Walker said, was insufficient to meet running costs.
The station and contents went unsold, although the vendor did manage to dispose of a stash of 450 original London and North Eastern Railway posters which had been collected by his father during the 1920s and 1930s and stored beneath a trap door in the royal wait-ing room.
The signal box at Wolferton is now Grade II listed, was itself offered for auction on 14 May 1989; the signalling mechanism would be sold separately in 1990, citing ill-health and the need to pay death duties, Hedly-Walker auctioned the station's contents The station itself was purchased by Richard Brown in 2001 and has since carried out a substantial refur-bishment of the Down side station buildings, crossing gates and signal box.
The signal box has been restored and still houses its original lever frame and gate wheel. The levers and interlocking mechanism were extensively refurbished and refitted with as-sistance from the local North Norfolk Railway signal engineering department.

F E A T U R E
The Flitcham Barn Dance The evening of the eighth of June saw a very jolly and convivial event take place in Flitcham. The Parent/Teachers Association (PTA) of our treasured village school had hit upon the notion of a Barn Dance to raise some much-needed funds. And a very professional job they did of organising it. They thought of everything and they have to be complimented for their thoroughness.
The venue was at Abbey Farm in one of the large barns there. Permission to use the barn was very kindly given by Mr. Edward Cross but his generosity extend-ed to a huge amount of help and support from him and his work-men in preparing the barn and arranging the layout. The barn was divided into four areas, the largest being the dance floor which was equipped with very comfy straw bale seating around the perimeter. Another smaller area was dedicated to the caterers who would provide the Hog Roast supper included in the ticket price. An area with tables and chairs made an ideal place for peo-ple to relax socially and chat or to enjoy their roast without having to balance it on their knees. And then finally, somewhere for the band to make the music for the dancing. There was no bar on this occasion to avoid the tedious bureaucracy of licensing but eve-ryone brought their favourite tipples with them and that proved to work very well.
The music was provided by local band “Rusty Relics” led by Lloyd Bailey who acted as compere and caller. He did a great job getting people onto the floor and teaching them
the moves and the pro-gress of the dance. Then the band would strike up and the fun and chaos begin. Of course, there’s always some body whose instructions got muddled and found themselves go-ing against the flow but it all added to the considera-ble merriment. The band alternated each dance with a performance piece. This gave the dancers time to draw breath, slake their thirsts and laugh about what went wrong.

We are open 7.30am -5.30pm, Monday-Friday, for 49 weeks of the year. We believe the child’s voice to be essential, so there-
fore we listen to the children in order to plan for their indi-vidual developing needs, by providing various activities and opportunities throughout the day. We are registered with OFSTED and follow the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage. All staff are qualified from level 2, up to degree level 5 in child care. At half time the barn fell quiet as everyone tucked into their delicious Hog Roasts and refilled their glasses. The raffle was drawn in this space and the prize of a magnificent Country Hamper was duly won and presented to the lucky winner. Then it was back to the dancing which went on until late, enthusiastic dancers clamouring for more and reluctant to let the fun and frolic fade into the night.
The event was very well attended. It attracted a really good crowd. Of course, there were lots of locals. There were people from farther away too. One couple came from Ely having seen the publicity banners at a roundabout. They booked a cottage nearby just to be able to get to the event. The publicity had been really good thanks to the extremely generous and encouraging support of MSP Print and Design whose premises are in Flitcham Barns.
The handsome sum of £852.96 was raised and congratulations and thanks for a successful event are due to all who contribut-ed. They should be proud.
And the words on everyone lips as they drifted home “We must do that again!”

Wow, what an action packed summer term our little school is having.
Firstly, congratulations must be ex-pressed to the team of pupils who took part in the School Cluster Swimming Gala. 6 pupils have qualified for the next round, the County Swimming Gala. Keep kicking Guys!!
This term’s topics include the Rain For-est and Dinosaurs and learning has cen-tred around these areas. All the hard work is being rewarded with a whole school trip to the Natural History Museum on July 4th in London. It will be a very long, but action packed day out.
Flitcham Primary School is proud to be performing in a special concert with the Orchestra of the Age of En-lightenment at the Kings Lynn Corn Exchange on 25th June, along with children from other local schools. The children have been practising music and singing, including Vivaldi’s Gloria and Han-del’s Water Music.
On the afternoon of the 25th, the children will be performing to pupils from other local schools and the evening perfor-mance is open to parents and families. We are sure the performances will be first class and ‘Good Luck’ to all those taking part.

Clerk Flitcham cum Appleton Parish Council wishes to appoint a Clerk/RFO for 2 hours per week, at NJC scale 18 – 22 (currently £8.919 - £10.198 per hour) dependent on qual-ifications and experience. Summary of duties:
The post is primarily home based with flexible hours apart from the requirement to
attend six meeting a year which take place (normally) on the second Tuesday of every other month.
In consultation with the chairman, producing and circulating agendas and minutes
of meetings.
Taking appropriated actions in line with the decisions of the council, including at-
tendance at outside meetings where appropriate.
Receiving and sending emails and dealing with correspondence on behalf of the
council.
Dealing with planning applications appropriately and in a timely manner.
As RFO, the Clerk is responsible for all financial matters including the payment of cheques, Clerk’s salary/PAYE, and preparation of the annual accounts and docu-ments for audit.

Incinerator Update The County Council was meant to be debat-ing getting out of the incinerator contract on 17th June but officers did not allow all mem-bers to see the contract and instead a press release was issued suggesting it could cost over £80million to walk away. An officer re-port said compensation would be due to Cory Wheelabrator even if corruption had occurred. This prompts the questions what other surprises are still ‘lurking’ in the con-tract and were any of the terms negotiated favourable to Norfolk County Council? Cabi-net agreed a QC should examine the con-tract and review the advice given to the Council that led to it being signed. It was also agreed that waste industry experts would assess the potential savings that could be made from alternative waste treat-ments. These are likely to be significant be-cause more advanced waste treatments are both cheaper and more efficient. Cory Wheelabrator’s technology was ‘state of the art’ in Germany and America around 20 years ago, things have moved on, expen-sive marketing does not make up for having an out of date product. On 10th June 2013 Cabinet “approved in full” recommendations which included having independent waste industry experts prepare a “Waste Manage-ment report” looking at what can be saved by using alternatives. It will be a good op-portunity for the new administration to show it is better than the last. The July music event is postponed until 21st September due to clashing with Festival Too.
