5th Grade Connect Night
Before I forget….
O Green papers are for questions you have for me.
I have a lot to cover tonight so your questions will
be answered in an email or phone call. Please jot
down your questions for me.
O Pink paper is for you to write a note to your child
to tell them how much you love them ☺.
O Finish the Picture! Paper is a creative activity
that students did the first week of school. Show
your child your creativity and finish the picture!

O Born and raised in Chagrin Falls, Ohio
O Bachelor’s degree from Bowling Green State University (Ohio)
O Masters Degree in Curriculum and Design from University of Phoenix
O National Board Certified Teacher –Recertified two years ago in 2016
O Married with two boys and a dog
O Have taught in Kyrene 20 years
O Taught in Tucson before moving to Phoenix
O Love sports (Ohio and AZ)

How Can Parents Be Involved in Their Child’s Education in the Classroom?
O Classroom Support – Weekly reading mentor, special projects, field trip chaperone, etc.)
O Support in the Library: Heavy budget cuts (They need you)
O PTO Involvement (They really need you!)
O Attendance – absences, tardiness, and signing out students early (Sometimes it happens, but try to limit these)
O Affects learning and student achievement

HomeworkO Students will write the homework and end of day clip chart
color in their agendas each day, and the agenda needs to be
checked/signed by a parent each night
O Read nightly for at least 20-30 minutes
O Math homework most nights (or skill sharpeners: Prodigy,
math fact practice, math games on my website, etc.)
O Meaningful and purposeful to reinforce skills taught
O Enables parents to actively engage in child’s education
O Teaches fundamental skills (time management, organization,
task completion, and responsibility)
O Prepares child for middle school
O Homework will factor into report card grade
O Students are responsible for completing their homework. It is
not intended to be homework for parents
O If student reaches frustration, have them stop!
Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff…
O Birthdays: No birthday treats please, or invitations at
school.
O Dress Code: District Handbook
O Snacks: We eat a healthy snack everyday at about 9:30
O Transportation Changes: Please call the office, if the
change needs to be made during the school day (I may not
get your emails during the school day). Or send in a note
O Lunch Money:
Pay online lunch money
or send money in an envelope/baggie to school with your child’s name on it, my name, and the amount in the envelope.
Classroom ScheduleO Lunch will be daily from 11:35-11:55. We have recess
afterward from 11:55-12:15.
O To start our day I will be picking the students up from
outside at 7:25, and we will begin our learning at 7:30. It is
very important that your child is on time to school to
maximize their learning. Our day starts with a morning
routine, morning meeting and then math, so it is important for
students both academically and socially to be at school on
time.
O Our Class Schedule is as follows:
Monday: Art with Ms. Rogers
Tuesday: Music with Mrs. Marshall – Library Books due
Wednesday: Library with Mrs. Moakler
Thursday: Computer Lab
Friday: P.E. with Mrs. Striker – Sneakers required!
Classroom ManagementO Positive Reinforcement will be used on a daily
basis: Clip Chart, table points, math monkey etc.
O Working towards goals both academic and
personal
O 7 Habits language and leadership will be used
O Growth Mindset (See Handouts)
O Everyone is a leader in something! (Strengths)
O Guiding the children to feel and be successful!
Parent Teacher CommunicationO Check your child’s agenda and binder every
night. Please sign their agenda. This shows
that you’ve seen what the homework is. (Please
only sign it if your child wrote their homework in
the agenda). They earn table points if everyone
at their table has their agenda signed.
O Please email (or send a note) if you have

O Items that should remain in their binder will be 3-
hole punched and put behind a tab
O Each student in the class will have a leadership notebook, and reflect on behavior & academics often
O SMART Goals will be created by the students to achieve their WIG
O Students will create academic goals, as well as personal goals.
O Fall and Spring Conferences will be student led, and this is a time where you will get to see your child’s progress and listen to them reflect on their data.
