Homework: What is it?

Homework is an opportunity to:1. Complete assignments begun in class.2. Reinforce skills already learned through activities.3. evelop proper study habits.!. evelop new interests and hobbies.". Read independently for pleasure.

District 24 considers homework to be an essential part of the student’s education by promoting academic success and foster student responsibility. The amount of homeworkvaries with the grade level and ability of the student. Homework assignments arerelated to that day’s activities and may or may not be started in the classroom. It isrecommended that a special time and place be provided for your child to do homework. How much time should homework take? #s a rule of thumb$ homework for "th

graders should take appro%imately "& minutes per night. However$ what needs to betaken into consideration is that in addition to assigned homework$ your child may bebringing homework that they did not complete in class. 'very assignment is due thene%t day unless told otherwise. Homework is designed to enhance or reinforce learningthat has already taken place and not to frustrate students. #ll work is thoroughlye%plained before being assigned.

Special Proects:

(n some occasions throughout the year$ homework will appear in the form of a specialpro0ect. +his type of longerterm homework will always be accompanied by a note hometo the parents. +hat note will detail e%actly what the pro0ect is$ what the e%pectations ofthe assignments are$ and when it is due.

Assignment &ote'ook 'ach child is responsible for having an assignment notebook with himher every

day for the entire year. 4t is your child5s responsibility to copy the day5s assignments inhisher assignment notebook.

P#(S:#ll students are e%pected to follow the -64/ atri%. +he e%pected behaviors are

consistent among the various locations through out the school. +he students have beentaught the atri% e%pectations. onthly$ these e%pectations will be reinforced by Cool +ools. 'ach class created their own set of e%pectations.

Second Steps:/econd /tep will continue to be taught in "th grade. +his is a great program that

models proper behavior and problem solving skills. 4t helps to improve selfesteem$empathy$ anger management$ and respect. 4t will typically be taught weekly.

Communication: +he preferred method of communication is email or a note sent with your student.

4f you choose to call$ please note that messages will be checked prior to 7:!" a.m. andafter 2:!" p.m. 4f you need to arrange alternate transportation$ please email theclassroom teacher and cc: Rachel /ooley 8rsooley9millburn2!.net. 4f you email after12:&& p.m. and only send it to the classroom teacher$ there is a chance that they will notget the message until after school. Communications will be returned within 2! hours upreceipt. -lease note that this refers to school days only$ not weekends or holidays.
