OUR MISSION The purpose of the APF is to address pet overpopulation and animal suffering through education and appropriate action, to enhance human/animal relationships, and to provide care to animals in need.

“Making Rounds with Oscar” Author to Speak

DID YOU KNOW?We offer humane education programs for kids of all ages by request. Learn more on our website or call 374-3944, ext. 119.

The APF is gearing up for its 18th annual Fireplug 500 Walk for Animals, presented by Price Chopper and Iams, and we hope that you will join us! This is the shelter’s largest annual fundraiser and its proceeds support our many animal care, spay/neuter and outreach programs ... but it is also a day of fun.

Put Your Best Foot Forward for Pets at the Fireplug 500

CBS-6 news anchor Liz Bishop, host of 6 On Pets, and Laura Daniels of B95.5’s Breakfast Club, will co-host the Fireplug 500 on September 11.

At first glance, Oscar seems like a typical cat – a handsome but aloof black-and-white tabby with a penchant for naps in the sun. For almost five years he has lived among patients with advanced dementia at the Steere House Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Providence, Rhode Island. But Oscar made international headlines when Dr. David Dosa, a geriatrician at Steere House, published an article in the New England Journal of Medicine that revealed the cat’s unusual talent: Oscar can predict when patients are going to die.

The APF is pleased to partner with the Schenectady County Public Library and several other agencies in presenting Dr. Dosa, author of Making Rounds with Oscar: The Extraordinary Gift of an Ordinary Cat, for a discussion of his

bestselling book on Monday, August 23 at 7:00 pm at the Carl B. Taylor Auditorium at SCCC. The program is free and open to the public.

In his book, Dr. Dosa illuminates Oscar’s amazing gift. A few hours before a resident passes away, Oscar climbs onto his or her bed. He purrs and refuses to leave until the patient dies. His predictions are always right. His special sense provides an early warning system,

giving caregivers precious time to alert family members that their loved one is near the end of life.

Making Rounds is also the story of the residents, staff and families of Steere House. Their stories all carry a common, uplifting element: Oscar. While Dr. Dosa portrays dementia and all of its difficulties, he provides hope and advice for caregivers who are coping with a loved one’s decline.

The Open Door Bookstore is offering a 20% discount on books purchased in advance or pre-ordered by calling 346-2719. Books will be sold at the event at full price. Attendees will have the chance to win several raffle prizes, including a pet gift basket, theater tickets and more. For further details, contact Karen Bradley at 388-4533 or [email protected].

PET ADOPTION We place healthy and temperamentally sound animals in responsible homes with the expectation that adopters will provide quality and lifelong care. Our process includes an adopter questionnaire and an agreement detailing the kind of care every animal should receive.

ANIMAL SURRENDERWe accept unwanted animals from Schenectady County residents. A minimum of $25 per animal is requested to offset the cost of care that we provide, approximately $200 per animal.

The APF is an independent nonprofit humane society funded by donations. It is not a municipal agency and receives no city, county, or state funding. The APF is not part of any national humane organization, such as the ASPCA or HSUS, and receives no funding from those organizations.

BEHIND CLOSED DOORSRecently I was channel-surfing from one reality show to another (is there anything else on these days?) when I stumbled upon a program on Animal Planet entitled, Confessions: Animal Hoarding.

Unfortunately, this is a reality show in the truest sense. Animal hoarding is a growing problem and a reality that the APF experiences on a regular basis. Between June and July the shelter assisted the City of Schenectady in two separate cases by taking in 58 cats and kittens living in deplorable conditions.

When we receive an influx of animals, whether it be 15 or 50, it places a tremendous burden on the shelter in several ways. These animals are generally ill and parasite ridden, so they must be isolated and treated, expending precious time, space and money.

It’s especially tough on our staff to care for these neglected animals, knowing the suffering they have endured for months and possibly years. Their temperaments vary widely, from feral to extremely sweet, making some adoptable and others not. The consolation is in knowing that they have been removed from the filthy environment to which they have been confined and are finally able to enjoy the basic necessities of fresh air, food and water and a clean living space, as well as relief from fleas and other conditions.

Hoarding usually begins with good intentions to help unwanted animals. However, things can spiral out of control when the desire exceeds the ability to help. An animal hoarder is often oblivious to the deteriorating conditions of their home, the animals or the effects on their own health and that of other household members.

Animal hoarders are not bad people. On the contrary, they are very caring individuals who overextend themselves. Recent studies have shown a correlation between certain psychological disorders and hoarding. People who hoard animals are from all social and economic backgrounds and can be found in every community. Some understand what they’re doing but cannot stop themselves. Others lose touch with reality and think that no one else can take better care of the animals.

If you suspect someone of having too many animals, notify animal control or, depending on the severity of the case, your local health department, of your concerns. In helping them to deal with this, we have a better chance of meeting the emotional needs of the hoarder while protecting the animals that are in their care.

garage Sale Team Makes Their MarkOur 4th Annual Thrifty Kitty and Bargain Hound Garage Sale was held in June. Mother Nature, unfortunately, was not kind to us this year. The weeks leading up to the sale were filled with days of heat and exhaustion, topped off with pouring rain on the day of the event.

A wonderful group of our “hard core” garage sale volunteers began their daunting task in early May. The team of Judy Dillenbeck, Dale Mancini, Sue Mickel, Ann-Marie Rutkowski, Linda Seymour and Pat Yazum tirelessly sorted, marked and organized the thousands of items that were dropped off during the six weeks preceding the event. So much was donated that the shelter had to rent two PODS to hold everything!

Despite long days on which the temperature soared into the 90’s, this dedicated group never quit. Thanks to their perseverance and help, over $12,000 was raised for the animals.

This is a great example of how invaluable our volunteers truly are. We absolutely could not have done it without such dedicated people. To all who donated items, assisted at the sale or came and shopped – a big thank you from all of us at the APF!

Bringing a Lesson in Kindness HomeThe APF celebrated Be Kind to Animals Week in May with its 8th Annual Poster and Essay Contest. This year’s theme, “Adopt Me!” resulted in over 850 entries and one resulted in something more.

When his teacher Miss Jess spoke to Evan Dolley’s 4th grade class at Orenda Elementary School about homeless pets, Evan really took the message to heart. His dog had recently passed away and his family was ready for another pet, so he urged them to visit the APF.

They ended up adopting Nora, a sweet pit bull mix. Evan and his family also attended APF’s Pet Academy, where they learned how to teach Nora basic manners and even some tricks. As you can see from their picture, Evan and Nora have become best friends and are enjoying their summer together.

Pet First AidSat., Nov. 6, 1:00 - 5:00 pm Presented byTundra Spirits Siberian Husky Rescue, this hands-on program will cover emergency care, CPR, rescue breathing and much more. Fee is $45 per person. Please call 374-3944, ext. 119 to register for classes.

Step Up for Pets and

a Kinder Community

We all want to live in a place that’s as safe for our pets as it is for our family and friends. When we step forward to help the animals, we’re also helping to build a more humane community for everyone.

A person who abuses an animal is just as great a threat to his fellow man. Time and time again, we find that crimes such as domestic violence and child abuse are closely connected with animal cruelty. Other crimes such as dogfighting bring weapons, drugs, and violence to our streets.

By participating in the Fireplug 500 Walk for Animals on September 11, you will help improve not only the lives of unwanted pets, but also the quality of life here in our community. Your support will:

> Provide care and second chances for unwanted and injured pets> Reduce pet overpopulation through spay/neuter programs> Assist pet owners in crisis, including victims of domestic violence> Nurture compassion and responsibility through humane education
