THE HEALING POWER OF METALSby Peter Morrell

Materia Medica remedy tre, 1998 - Peter Morrell

There are seven metals in the ancient alchemical system of healin! "hich have

res#rface$ from time to time in me$ical tho#ht% With ro"in interest in this

area! this article ives merely an o#tline of them! their lin&s "ith $isease an$

    materia me$ica an$ th#s ho'ef#lly an intro$#ctory 'ortait of their 'erennialrelevance to nat#ral healin%

The article is basically divided into two parts - first a part that describes the 7 metals

and their symbolic links; second a discssion of how this knowled!e can be applied

    to heal yor life"

    The seven metals are

    !old

    silvermercry

    copper

    iron

    tin

    lead

They correspond respectively to the planets sn, moon, mercry, vens, mars, #piter

and satrn" These in trn correspond with certain key $alities or personalities

described in detail in astrolo!y and %ermetic science" &tated simplistically and for

brevity, mars is seen as mascline and active, vens is feminine, artistic and passive,

#piter the theori'er, satrn the lord of death, mercry the commnicator, sn the day-

kin! and moon the ni!ht !oddess"

They are also deemed to correspond to the parts of the body as follows

sn - !old - arm - heart and spine

    moon - silver - ar!entm - brain and flidsmercry - mercry - hydrar!yrm - nervos system, ln!s

vens - copper - cprm - kidneys, ntrition

mars - iron - ferrm - blood, mscles and circlation

    #piter - tin - stannm - liver ( !all bladder

satrn - lead - plmbm - skeleton and skin, hair, nails

&imilarly the planets and metals correspond to certain colors" There are varios

schemes" )ne sch scheme is as follows*

sn - !old - !olds, yellows

moon - silver - white, cream, !reensmercry - mercry - silver, !rey, yellow

vens - copper - bles, pinks, pastel shades

    mars - iron - reds ( browns

    #piter - tin - oran!es

satrn - lead - black, dark colors, prple, violet, indi!o

+ecase foods can also be classified as the seven metals, one may chan!e ones diet

so as to redce foods that are harmfl for yo and increase yor se of more helpfl

foods" This applies !enerally, not #st to considerations of which foods mi!ht be rich

in which metals" &ome food correspondences are shown*

    sn - snflower seeds, oran!es, e!!s, !rapes

moon - melons, ccmbers, yo!rt, cheese, milk

    mercry - cereals

vens - frits, potato, chocolate, sweets, berries

mars - peppers, tomatoes, onion, !arlic, crry, meats, black pddin!

#piter - nts, seeds, lemons, apples

satrn - coffee, carob, aber!enes, olives

    G#i$e to the seven metals

brief otline of the metals is as follows*

person who has e.cess /ron is hard, stron!, active and assertive - an /ron Man" /t is

the mascline metal that will fi!ht or ar!e if pshed, or even withot pshin!" They

make decisions $ickly, they speak abrptly and forthri!htly, they move $ickly and

are always bsy, movin! on to new thin!s" They !ravitate natrally to military, metal-

workin!, btcherin! and police matters where they find others of their own kind and

a #ob they thoro!hly en#oy" They think on the hoof, rarely reflectin! on what theydo" They are activity centred, spendin! most of their time flly occpied" They like

sports of all kinds" Many bsiness people fall also into this cate!ory" They are

accsed of bein! hard, selfish and a!!ressive" &ome incline to violence or criminality"

/ron is softened, domesticated and improved with silver, copper or !old" The iron

type needs to be less assertive and more kind, needs to be mellowed and made more

passive and receptive to others needs" 0. vom and offea types abond here" lso

    &lphr and 2errm met"

People with an e.cess of opper, like vens, are mild and artistic, !oes with the flow, creates harmony, will never pset others needlessly" /t is prominent in artists of all

kinds; they like sweet thin!s, sloppy films"

3ike silver people, with whom they match very well, they are inspired, poetic and

romantic" The copper type has the needs of others #st as clearly in mind as their own"

They are kind, deep, !eneros and warm-hearted" They like their creatre comforts,

food, etc and a romantic life" opper people love life and people; they love to

socialise and mi. with others" They have stron! family ties and the presence and

companionship of friends and family are very important to them" #obs like desi!ners,

film-makers, artists, actors, msicians" The copper type needs to develop more

confidence, more strctre, more stren!th, more !rit" opper can be stren!thened

either with iron or lead" Plsatilla is a key remedy for copper types"

Persons with an e.cess of 3ead are dark and heavy, rather sombre or !loomy, rather

depressed or maybe a control-freak; dont toch that, its mine4, etc" They like coffee,

dark clothes, winter, ni!ht-time and !loomy or hi!hly strctred msic" They tend to

be rather conservative and love strctre and strict time !idelines, etc" They can be

pti!ht and intolerant especially of interference from others, which they dislike" They

are often too wrapped p in themselves to bother mch abot others" They fail to see

how others cant also lead a strict and orderly life" They tend to be very serios, to

think too mch and to dwell in the past" 5obs like architects, bankers, accontants,

solicitors" They are rather conservative and set in their ways" They dislike chan!e and

pset of any kind" /nterested in politics" The lead type needs to loosen p a bit and

develop more spontaneos #oy" /t is chiefly mellowed and improved thro!h !old,

copper, tin or silver" lose remedies are alc, Plmbm, lmina and 3ycopodim"

Tin people are the theori'ers; even when there is nothin! to think abot; they like to

speclate, maybe !amble a little, a fltter on the horses is not beyond them; they also

like travel and lon! #orneys abroad" They mi!ht be accsed of havin! a sspiciosmind and of seein! thin!s that arent there" Their love of theories comes from their

ability to clearly see patterns in events and data" These patterns are often not visible

to others" 2rom these patterns and trends they bild p theories to e.plain the world

arond them" They are natral philosophers" They often have a well developed sense

of hmor" Tin types need to develop more action and less tho!ht, to live less in

themselves and more in the oter world" /t is the in$isitiveness, e.pansiveness and

!rowth tendency of #piter that makes tin people so obsessed with patterns and

information" They tend to be e.cessive and obsessive in the thin!s they do" This also

stems from their !reat natral enthsiasm" #obs like niversity and colle!e lectrers,

philosophers, bishops, cler!y, professors, travel a!ents" Tin can be livened p a little

with iron, made more artistic with silver or copper and deepened with lead"

helidonim and other liver remedies are associated with Tin"

Mercry is the chatterbo., ceaselessly talkin! and !ossipin!, sometimes harmlessly,

sometimes bitchily" Mercry makes a !ood messen!er, diplomat or !o-between, yet

they can be two-faced and cannot keep a secret4 They appear as all thin!s to all

people, somewhat promiscos in every sense and rather chan!eable" they lovebooks, letters, newspapers, ma!a'ines, #ornals, correspondence, readin!, writin!,

telephones, crosswords, lan!a!es, #obs like teachers and writers, servants, doctors,

diplomats, entertainers, Mercris, Tberc, ann indica and &tramonim are related

    remedies"

&ilver is the sensitive metal of the emotions and the more refined senses" Maybe they

are clairvoyant or #st oversensitive; they like to be treated kindly and will not

tolerate any ro!hness" They do not !et on with iron types, for e.ample, who they

find far too ro!h and insensitive" 3ike copper they have a fine artistic sense and

prefer family and friends most" The lnar silver type is the most carin! and

compassionate of all the metals; they like people and want to mother them and care

for them" /n this sense they are the archetypal feminine type" People with e.cess

silver may find life rather painfl and constantly on an emotional roller-coaster, as

they react to ne!ative and positive thin!s so intensely and with powerfl emotion"

They need to develop some lead or iron to harden and protect them from the harsh

realities of life, by redcin! the intensity of their emotional response" mothers,

childminders, nannies, nrses, teachers" r!entm, Plsatilla and /!natia are related

to the &ilver type of person"

6old is kin!, prod, refined and natrally sperior" ain, arro!ant and somewhat

ha!hty, the sn type is nevertheless very warm-hearted and kind" )nce yo !et past

the vanity, yo see that they are kind !ivers who love to throw parties and splash ot

on bi! shows" They are msic lovers and especially like opera" They make loyal

friends, and tho!h intent on bi! schemes, will always help others in need" 6old

people scceed very easily and are !ifted as natral winners; they come top, come

first, !et the !old medals, strive to win or win withot even tryin!; they can be prod,

aloof, smilin!, aim to scceed, become famos; kin!s, $eens, bosses, directors,

msic lovers, etc" emedies like rm, Platina"

    (isc#ssion

To tilise metal therapy directly, yo need to search thro!h yor life and identify all

those $alities that mark yo ot as bein! lead, tin or silver, say" +y checkin! yor

likes and dislikes for e.ample, yo can eventally narrow this down" /n this way yo

will eventally discover yor own ni$e metallic blend" o can bild p thro!h a

few days thinkin! a $ite complete profile of yorself in relation to the $alities of

the 7 metals" This is $ite easy" o #st set yorself a $estionnaire abot color and

food preferences, etc" Then yo can determine where yor metallic stren!ths and

  • 8/11/2019 50718160 Seven Metals Peter Morrel

    5/10

weaknesses lie" The end-!oal is to restore the metallic balance and ac$ire a more

even blend which likewise promotes a balance in health and well-bein!"

There is a very accrate bt comple. astrolo!ical method for determinin! the precise

blend of metals in ones make-p and for showin! in nmerical terms which metals

are stron!est and weakest in ones make-p" +t sch a method is too complicated to

    describe here"

There are three possible otcomes of yor search" 2irstly, yo may find yo have an

even blend of all the metals and no problems in life" Make the most of yor !ood

fortne, yo are nsal4 &econdly, yo mi!ht have several metals even, with one or

more deficient, in which case it is those deficient ones that yo need to boost frther"

Thirdly, it may trn ot that yo have all the metals even bt one or more standin!

ot as havin! a mch hi!her score" This indicates that yo have an e.cess of this one

metal in yor life" To redce its effect pon yo, yo need to psh it frther away

from yo by discardin! all colors etc that relate to it and adopt $alities, colors,

etc, that are its opposite" This will netralise its overall effect and restore the balance"

)nes life contains two distinct kinds of metallic thin!s" There are thin!s yo like

and have by virte of a metal e.cess, and there are those that yo have de to a metal

deficiency" o mst search for both" /f yo like blacks and dark bles, sleep easily,

bt are hard to rose and lack ener!y then yo have a clear e.cess of lead" +t yo

may also feel bri!htened by reds, which is yor second favorite color" This

indicates a lack of iron" Ths this person shold redce the lead in their life and

hei!hten the iron" +y makin! this kind of ad#stment, they can compensate for the

lack of one and e.cess of another" They will lose their tiredness and !ain a more

positive otlook, #st thro!h makin! $ite sbtle chan!es to the contents of their

    life"

s a !eneral rle, men need to cltivate more silver or copper to tone down their

mars, and women need to develop more lead or iron to balance their copper and

    silver"

/t is well to bear in mind that altho!h we all contain aspects of all the metals,

nevertheless, one or more will tend to be dominant :in e.cess or deficient in any one

    person"

    Rationale

/n a sense as above so below the heart in the body is seen in alchemy as e$ivalent

to the !old of the earth and the sn of the heavens; brain of the body as silver in the

earth and moon in the heavens; nerves and ln!s of the body as mercry in the rocks

and mercry in the heavens, etc" The reasonin! behind these close correspondences is

that they share similar $alities and resonate with each other on many different levels"

link is thereby established and repeatedly emphasised between man, the earth-

bond metals and the wider cosmos" /n alchemy this link is seen as vital for !ainin!

any fndamental !rasp of or natre, disharmonies in the body, the earth or the

  • 8/11/2019 50718160 Seven Metals Peter Morrel

    6/10

cosmos" ll are seen as intimately and ine.tricably interconnected" +y identifyin!

deficiencies in one realm, for e.ample, one can then apply the appropriate chan!e or

re-tnin! thro!h the or!an, metal or planet that corresponds" /n this way ad#stments

can be made in any realm and the harmony of interrelationships that constittes man-

    earth-cosmos can be re-established"

/t is inherent in this view of life, that any imbalance in the cosmos which has becomeimprinted in yor makep will inevitably manifest as an imbalance within yor life,

often as disease" The imbalance may lead yo ine.plicably and intitively to favor a

particlar food, color, plant, metal, etc over others" +y searchin! thro!h these like

and dislike patterns in yor life, yo can be!in to e.press that imbalance in terms of

the 7 metals" nd then yo can be!in to deal with it"

This interrelationship means, amon!st other thin!s, that we ncontrollably attract into

or life that which is helpfl or sefl to s and which reflects or inner natre" This

incldes people, relatives and friends, as well as ob#ects, plants, pets, etc" The inner

and the oter natres cooperate, reflect and reinforce each other" et also, thro!h the

polarity principle, we can attract that which is the e.act opposite" To some e.tent this

is why we can become ill from the very thin! that will heal s and be healed by that

which makes s nwell - contraries and similars bein! to this de!ree conver!ent" /t

also means we can attract into or lives the very thin!s that case s ill-health" et, as

    3oise %ay and

  • 8/11/2019 50718160 Seven Metals Peter Morrel

    7/10

/f however, yo have a deficiency of satrn-lead, then yo wold take the reverse

steps, and brin! this metal mch more into the forefront of yor life by so doin!"

Thro!h simple and harmless e.perimentation of this kind one can come to test the

seflness of these ideas very easily and maybe come to know profond trths"

Ths the phrase brin!in! some metal more into yor life can be interpreted in many

different ways, each havin! the potential of brin!in! abot the desired healin! effect"&o it does not #st mean the metal - it means the archetype the metal has come to

represent" /t may mean a color, a metal, a herb, a food, a crystal or an animal" )nce

ones metallic deficiency or e.cess - or what we mi!ht term ones simillimm

metallicm - has been identified, then one can e.plore different ways of brin!in! that

metal into yor life and ad#stin! and e.plorin! the ri!ht intensity or dosa!e of ones

intimacy with it" The essence can be placed nder ones bed, made into a pillow, pt

in yor bath, placed on the ton!e, held in ones hand, sewn into clothes, incorporated

into a bodily ornament or piece of #ewellery, sed as a lotion or ointment, or as tablets

in the moth, etc" The possibilities here are endlessly e.citin!"

/ recall with some shame now my own scepticism when told by a patient some years

a!o abot a local Mslim healer she had visited for her sick son, who mostly sed

/slamic prayers written in rabic on pieces of paper to be placed in the bath of the

sick person" / privately scoffed at this idea at the time, yet now / can see its more

sbtle si!nificance" Perhaps the lesson to learn here was that we do not know

everythin! and shold always be open minded even towards the apparently ldicros

    - especially towards the ldicros4

The method we adopt is lar!ely immaterial, it is the process of linkin! and

correspondence that is important, and brin!in! it more closely into yor life" +y re-

establishin! yor intimate correspondence with that metal in some way, one initiates

a healin! process, which is in reality a harmonisation of imbalances" The precise

method one ses to link p with the archetype is secondary, varies from individal to

individal and embraces all the healin! arts available" certain amont of harmless

e.perimentation is re$ired with this techni$e to find for oneself what acts best"

)ne mi!ht meditate pon a certain color, metal or flower, immerse oneself in a

certain phrase or poem that encapslates the $ality one seeks to ac$ire" These

mi!ht inclde ac$irin! a cat :!old, do! :mars, fish :tin, tortoise :lead or horse:tin as a pet, wearin! a certain color more often, placin! of crystals pon ones body

or the se of 2lower essences or essential oils"

)ne can find in +ritain simple remedies that are sefl" They occr in fields, waste-

places and !ardens" They can be prepared in homoeopathic form by the sal

methods or by flower essence preparation sin! sprin! water and pressed #ice,

preserved with some vodka and then potentised in the sal way" 6ems, crystals and

mineral remedies can be sed directly or prepared sin! the ae potentiser" emedies

can also be introdced into yor life by bein! with them, holdin! them, placin! them

within yor active environment" This especially applies to colors, crystals, metals, plants and minerals" /t is the ori!inal method of +ach with his flowers" /t is also

worthwhile considerin! removin! some elements from yor life that mi!ht be

  • 8/11/2019 50718160 Seven Metals Peter Morrel

    8/10

harmfl to yor health" &ome colors, foods, fra!rances, plants etc that yo have

arond yo may be prodcin! mild provin!s in yor health or are conteractin! more

sbtle forces that wold otherwise enhance yor health"

2or each remedy it is important to !ain some insi!hts abot its healin! properties,

some astrolo!ical links and also associated colors, etc" These will help people who

wish to meditate pon each remedy before sin! them" Perhaps the remedies a personneeds !row ri!ht otside their own hose" nd we attract to s the remedies we need"

&o lookin! beyond the very commonest plants that are fond in yor !arden -

incldin! forei!n plants - pick those nsal ones that only !row or thrive in yor

!arden" /t is safe to assme that these plants are specifically attracted to yo" hoose

those and make tinctres or a mi.ed tinctre to potentise or as an oil to rb behind the

ears" This acts like the +ach remedies" They can also be bro!ht closer to yo by

brin!in! them indoors, placin! them in the bedroom, etc"

ll of these are perfectly valid methods of brin!in! the desired healin! $ality into

yor life" They represent different methods of imbibin! a metal into ones psycho-

physical system" /n this way they are all methods of brin!in! a metal into ones life

and activatin! a healin! response or re-tnin! of ones life" They are also different

e.pressions of the same law of similars, which is the drivin! force behind

    homoeopathy"

2rom the above it becomes possible / hope, to more flly appreciate the otherwise

silly sondin! sentence that #piter in the heavens is tin in the earth and the liver in

man" /t is a remarkable correspondence of $alities and fnctional processes that is

bein! revealed, an or!anic vision of niversal wholeness, not a lo!ical or scientific

    claim"

/t is srely e.citin! to feel that here is a system of very profond and yet relatively

simple natral healin!" /t can be e.plored by anyone trly interested in healin! their

lives in the fllest sense" /t recommends itself as safe, harmless, niversal and

    effective" =orth tryin!"
