Shaklee Environmental Milestones • 1956 -1979

– 1956: Dr. Shaklee founded a company based on Living in Harmony with Nature to improve the health of people and the planet.

– 1960: Basic H Concentrated Organic Cleaner –one of the first non-toxic, biodegradable cleaners

– 1970: Shaklee introduces one of the first biodegradable laundry detergents –free of phosphates, nitrates or borates.

• 1980’s – 1985: Selected by Wild Dolphin Project to use

product onboard research vessel. Relationship has continued for 21 years.

– 1986: Shaklee provided nutritional support to Will Steger on the 1st unsupported dog sled to the North Pole.

– 1987: Shaklee was selected by Jacque Cousteau and the Cousteau Society to provide products for use onboard their research vessels, the Calypso and Alcyone.

– 1989: Shaklee helps build schools and health clinics and plant more than a million trees in Asia through a partnership with the American Himalayan Foundation, chaired by Sir Edmund Hillary.

– 1989-1990: Shaklee provides support for Will Steger’s second expedition which was the first crossing of Antarctica on foot, covering 3400 miles. Following this expedition, Steger testified before Congress on polar and environmental issues.

Shaklee Environmental Milestones • 1990’s

– 1990: Shaklee’s nontoxic and biodegradable Basic-H was chosen as one of the first official Earth Day products.

– 1991: Shaklee introduces Basic-D, one of the first phosphate-free automatic dishwashing detergents.

– 1992: Shaklee Cares, a nonprofit organization, was established and dedicated to providing relief from natural disasters.

– 1995: Shaklee provided support Will Steger’s polar exploration which was the first surface crossing of the 2,500 mile wide Arctic Ocean.

– 1996: Shaklee products where selected by Ocean Alliance and Whale Conservation Institute for use onboard the research vessel, Odyssey, which gathers data on contaminants throughout the world’s oceans.

– 1998: Shaklee becomes a Charter Partner of the U.S. EPA’s Climate Wise Program, which set aggressive corporate-wide greenhouse gas reduction goals.

Shaklee Environmental Milestones 2000:

– Shaklee becomes the first company in the world to obtain Climate Neutral™ certification and totally offset its C02 emissions.

– Shaklee opens its World Headquarters, one of the first green, energy-saving, award winning buildings designed using sustainable materials, including certified sustainable wood, recycled carpets and recycled plastics.

2005:

– Shaklee becomes a major partner of the Green Belt Movement, founded by Dr. Wangari Maathai, the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize laureate.

2006:

– Dr. Wangari Maathai becomes Global Ambassador for A Million Trees. A Million Dreams, a Shaklee environmental campaign the plant trees in North America and Africa.

– Shaklee holds first-ever carbon neutral conference in San Francisco by offsetting the greenhouse gas emissions of 10,000 attendees.

– Shaklee is selected as a US EPA Climate Leader, pledging to maintain a net zero impact on climate change.

– Shaklee is commended by President Bill Clinton for leadership in offsetting carbon emissions and recognized at the Clinton Global Initiative.

– Shaklee is recognized in as EPA Climate Leader in Forbes Magazine.

– Shaklee provides book environmental book Green to Gold to world leaders in Davos, Switzerland for the World Economic Forum. Special forward was written by the author about Shaklee.

– Shaklee becomes a founding member of the Business Council on Climate Change, an organization of businesses that act as a model of global climate stewardship.

– Shaklee becomes the first company in the world to offset its carbon emissions by providing sustainable energy to electrify villages in Africa in partnership with Millennium Promise, an organization established by Dr. Jeffrey Sachs.

CO2 Reduction Projects

Sensors in work stations shut off lighting and peripherals if the occupant is away for more than 5 minutes.

Motion sensors are located throughout the building for overhead lighting. If the sensor does not sense movement for 3 to 5 minutes, the overhead lights will shut off, leaving only emergency lighting illuminated.

Building is set in an East/West orientation to maximize sunlight.

Electronic shades control light and heat with sensors.

Exterior light shades draw light into the workspace and provide shade from southern sun.

Internal Efforts to Reduce GHG

• Between 2000 and 2005, the company has been able to achieve a 24% reduction in C0 2 emissions.

• Company subsidizes employee use of mass transit and is located 1 block from BART station

External Efforts to Offset GHG emissions

Fossil Fuel Displacement.

2000

Replaced kerosene lamps and diesel generators with solar photovoltaics in Sri Lanka and India. Over the 20 year lifetime, one household 35 W solar PV system will prevent more than 6 tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere.

Wind Energy

2003

Supported construction of The Rosebud Sioux Tribe Wind Turbine—the first large-scale Native American owned and operated

wind turbine.

Fuel Conversion –Converted boilers in the Portland School Districtfrom oil to natural gas. The retrofit also reduced energy costs for the school district.

2003Converted San Bernadino County, California school buses from petroleum-based diesel fuel to biodiesel fuel (formulated from recycled cooking oil). The retrofit not only decreased GHG emissions, it also reduced tailpipe emissions of pollutants that aggravate asthma in children.

Fuel Conversion

2000 Converted boilers in the Portland School Districtfrom oil to natural gas. The retrofit also reduced energy costs for the school district.

• 1986: Shaklee first expedition with Will involved the first dogsled journey to the North Pole (1600 miles) without resupply

• 1995: Shaklee’s third expedition with Will was the first dogsled traverse of the Arctic Ocean from Russia to Canada.
