Are you a good judge of character?Talking about character is one thing. But putting words into actions can sometimes be tough. In ancient China, Confucius believed that doing “good” meant doing the right thing at the right time. Guess what? The same thing is true today! Study the list of character traits below, and then read the passages that follow. Which trait from the list is being put into action in each example?

Character Traits:

Caring: Being kind or understanding toward someone.

Courage: The quality that helps someone be brave in the face of fear.

Diligence: Working hard at something and not giving up.

Excellence: Doing something to the best of one’s ability.

Respect: An action that demonstrates admiration or honor toward someone.

1.No matter how many times Maria tried to solve her tangram puzzle, she couldn’t find the answer. “I’ll never solve it!” she thought. She was frustrated, but she didn’t want to quit. With a little concentration and a few more tries, she was finally able to make the correct shape. She solved the puzzle!Character trait: _________________________________

2. Steve’s friends were some of the fastest runners on the track team. Sometimes it seemed like he’d never measure up. Nothing felt better than when he beat hispersonal record at the last meet of the season.Character trait: _________________________________

3. Shawn’s stomach flipped. Even though nobody real-ized he’d started the rumor, he’d hurt someone and he knew he had to make it right. He took a deep breath and told Laura the truth.Character trait: __________________

4. Derek was psyched when he saw at least a foot of snow had fallen during the night. “No school today!” he shouted. As he went downstairs to turn on the TV henoticed his elderly neighbor, Mrs. Cullen, shoveling her driveway. Derek ran outside. “I’ll finishshoveling the driveway for you Mrs. Cullen,” he said. “Why don’t you head inside and warm up?”Character trait: __________________

5. Yeh-Shen has spent every night for weeks going through the big box of old photographs in the closet. Her grandparents were going to celebrate their 50thwedding anniversary, and she was making a special scrapbook. She couldn’t wait to present it to them.Character trait: __________________

Inspirational Ideas

Create your own scenes and act out differ-ent character traits with a game of charades! Instead of acting out a word or phrase, players can pick one of the five character traits and act out a scene where that trait is used. Pretend to bow to your sensei to show respect or help an elderly lady across the street to show caring. If the character traits are still a bit difficult to grasp, brainstorm different situations in which each trait would be used.
