5.How did you attract/address your audience?

I conducted a focus group to see if the preferred reading was received by the target audience and also to see if the sequence captured their interest and if so, what exactly did they find interesting.

Plot

The plot was understood however, the participants were not confident in dictating it which suggests I could have done more to make the plot more certain. For example, I could have included a direct address from one of the characters or the use of narrative/voice over.

genre

• The audience were able to recognise the genre as well as themes such as love and romance which were lightly explored within the sequence.

Sound

• I hoped to attract the audience through the use of sound. Sound is an important element within horror as it helps build tension and suspense which is part of the unique experience when watching a horror.

• Judging by the response on sound by the participating audience, this desired effect was achieved.

EditingIn order to make our sequence unique we tried to experiment and challenge some of the typical conventions connected with horrors. One of the experiments was the style of editing. Horrors usually use quick paced editing in order to surprise the audience, however we tried to slow things down to be unpredictable.

However, this experiment didn’t work out as the audience didn’t like it. They felt it ruined the mood and atmosphere.

Characters I attempted to attract the audience through representing different types of people. For example, Tshani’s character was representative of young rebellious people whereas Jeneba’s character was to represent someone more orderly and humble. However, the audience had trouble figuring this out as they felt Jeneba’s costume and prop’s didn’t correspond. For example one mentioned that instead of coffee Jeneba should have gotten a coke. This caused trouble as the audience couldn’t relate to their characters. They didn’t completely erase the idea of them being a realistic representation however they felt they couldn’t picture them within their society.

MORALS

• Lastly, I wanted to see what message the audience got from the sequence.
