The Indiana State Head CoachIndiana State head coach Greg Lansing (South Dakota, 1990) is 24-14 (.632) overall in his second season as a head coach. He is 12-6 all-time in MVC games, including a 7-2 mark at home and a 5-4 mark on the road. During his career, he is 13-3 in all home games, 7-8 on the road, 4-3 in neutral court contests and 10-3 in games decided by five points or less. Lansing is 0-0 all-time against Texas Tech, and has not faced off against a member of the Big 12 Conference. With the Trees, Lansing is 0-2 in overtime games and 18-0 when holding teams to 63 points or less. Thursday’s game is Greg Lansing’s 39th as Indiana State head coach. Lansing is the second head coach to lead the Sycamores to the NCAA Tournament in their rookie campaign in the history of the program, with the other being Bill Hodges leading ISU to a 33-1 record and a Final Four appearance in the 1979 NCAA Tournament. Lansing was just the 14th rookie head coach in the history of the MVC to lead his team to 20 victories during their debut season.

Television ParticularsThursday’s game can be seen live nationally on ESPN2 as well as online at ESPN3.com.

A Little HistoryIndiana State is currently in its 116th season of college basketball at the school. The Sycamores are 1,372-1,180 all-time on the hardwood. Indiana State’s game at Oral Roberts last season was the historic 2,500th game in the history of the program.

Against The Big 12 ConferenceIndiana State is 5-6 all-time against current members of the Big 12 Conference, in-cluding a 1-0 mark versus Thursday’s opponent, Texas Tech. Indiana State has not faced a member of the Big 12 Confence since March 16, 2001 when ISU downed Oklahoma in the first round of the 2001 NCAA Tournament in a game played in Mem-phis, Tenn. Versus members of the Big 12 Conference, Indiana State is 1-0 vs. Baylor, 0-1 vs. Iowa State, 1-1 vs. Kansas State, 0-1 vs. Missouri), 2-2 vs. Oklahoma, 0-1 vs. Texas and 1-0 vs. Texas Tech.

Game 5: Texas Tech vs. Indiana State 4November 24, 2011

342011-12 Indiana State Basketball Notes

Sycamores 4-0 For First Time Since 2005Indiana State has opened the 2011-12 campaign with victories over Eastern Illinois Louisiana-Monroe, Ball State and Green Bay. The Sycamores are off to a 4-0 start to a season for the first time since the 2005-06 season when the Trees opened with an 8-0 ledger.

Printy’s Heroics And Late Game Defense Key Against Green BayIndiana State’s Jordan Printy hit four 3-pointers to lead the Sycamores with 12 points in the 57-56 victory over Green Bay. Printy drained his final 3-pointer with 15 sec-onds remaining to down the Phoenix in heroic fashion. Also key in the Sycamores’ victory over Green Bay was a strong late-game defensive performance which held the Phoenix without a field goal over the final 2:32 of the game and limited them to just eight points in the final eight minutes.

Printy Moving Up Indiana State 3-Point ListIndiana State junior Jordan Printy currently has 163 career 3-pointers and recently passed Eddie Bird for second on the ISU all-time list. Printy is one of just 14 Syca-mores in the history of the program to hit at least 100 3-point field goals in a career. Printy needs 120 more to tie Michael Menser for first on the ISU all-time 3-point list with 283. Additionally, Printy is the older brother of Iowa women’s basketball sophomore Jaime Printy who was the 2010 Big Ten Freshman Of The Year. The Iowa women’s basketball team received an at large bid into the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament also last season made Jordan and Jaime the only brother/sister combo in the Big Dance in 2011.

Good Starter On The BatteryIndiana State is 2-0 on the season when the Sycamores’ starting five outscores the opponents’ starting five. ISU’s starters outscored the opponent’s at Louisiana-Mon-roe and against Green Bay this season. Under second-year head coach Greg Lansing, the Sycamores are 14-2 when the ISU starting five scores more than their oppo-nent’s counterparts.

63 Is The Magic NumberIndiana State is 3-0 this season when holding an opponent to 63 points or less. Un-der second-year head coach Greg Lansing, the Sycamores are a perfect 18-0 when allowing less than 63 points to the opposition (including a 8-0 mark when holding teams to 53 or less).

“Justin” CaseIndiana State freshman Justin Gant posted five blocked shots in the Sycamores’ 57-50 home court victory over Ball State on November 18. Gant’s five blocked shots are the most by a Sycamore since Josh Crawford tallied seven against Evansville in 2010 and was just one shy of the ISU freshman of six held by Isiah Martin who had six against Creighton in 2008.

An Indiana State Win Over Texas Tech Would ...

• Give Indiana State a 5-0 record to start to the season for the first time since the 2005-06 campaign when the

Sycamores opened that year with an 8-0 mark.

• Improve the Sycamores to 5-3 in games played on a neutral court under Greg Lansing.

• Give the Sycamores two all-time wins against Texas Tech in two tries.

• Be the Sycamores first victory under second-year head coach Greg Lansing against a member of the Big 12

Conference.

Missouri Valley Weekly Awards

Road WarriorsUnder second-year head coach Greg Lansing, the Sycamores are 7-8 in all road games and have won each of their last four true road games dating back to last season and including this year’s 71-59 victory at ULM. With its win over ULM, the Sycamores won their first road game of the year for the first time since 2005 and have now won each of their last three road games over Sun Belt Conference foes dating back to 2009.

Jake Odum Named To Preseason All-Missouri Valley Conference Squad; Sycamore Picked ThirdJake Odum was one of two sophomores league wide to be named to the 2011-12 Preseason All-Missouri Valley Conference Team as voted upon this fall by league head coaches, media and sports information directors. Odum was named to the league’s honorable mention squad as well as to the all-freshman, all-newcomer and all-de-fensive squads one year ago as a freshman. Odum headlined a group of five players selected to the 2011-12 MVC Preseason All-Conference Team. Joining Odum were Creighton’s Doug McDermott, Wichita State’s Toure’ Murry, Evansville’s Colt Ryan and Missouri State’s Kyle Weems. Weems is the league’s preseason player of the year. As a team, Indiana State was picked to finish third in the Missouri Valley Conference race behind Creighton and Wichita State. The Sycamores third place prediction is tied for its highest since the league began using preseason polls in 1985.

New King Of The Four-Point PlayIndiana State redshirt freshman RJ Mahurin learned a few trick from Aaron Carter, a graduated player who had eight career four-point plays. Mahurin posted two 4-point plays during his freshman season, one each in ISU’s games against Drake and Bradley. His two 4-point plays have each come in the first half of the two contests in which he has been fouled while stepping out for a 3-pointer, has been fouled and has convert-ed the ensuing free throw. Mahurin was fouled on a 3-point attempt against Illinois State, and made all three of his free throws. He is already at it again this year as he was fouled on a 3-point attempt against Ball State, missed the shot, but made all three of his awarded free throws.

Sycamore SigneesIndiana State second year head coach Greg Lansing announced a pair of signees dur-ing the NCAA Early Signing Period in November of 2011. ISU has inked TJ Bell (Charles-ton, Ill./Charleston HS) and Rhett Smith (Sullivan, Ind./Sullivan HS) to national letters of intent and they will begin their Sycamore careers as freshman in time for the 2012-13 campaign.

Bell is a 6-8 guard/forward who will begin his senior season at Charleston (Ill.) High School later this month. He was listed early in his career as one of the Top 25 players in the state of Illinois and averaged 13.9 points as well as 8.2 rebounds as a junior. Bell was named to the All-Apollo Conference in 2011 for his Charleston team which finished with a 16-13 record.

Smith is a 6-7 post player who will begin his senior campaign next week for Sullivan High School and head coach Jeff Moore. He has been the Golden Arrows leading scor-er each of his first three seasons of playing at the varsity level. He averaged 17.3 points per game last season as a junior despite missing playing time due to a hand injury. Smith connected on 61.6 percent of his shots from the field. He scored a season-best 28 points against West Vigo during the 2010-11 campaign.

MVC OVERALL

The Last Time Out ...

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Indiana State is off to its first 4-0 start to a season since the 2005-06 campaign thanks to a clutch shot by senior Jordan Printy in the waning seconds of a thrilling 57-56 Sycamore victory over Green Bay in front of 4,761 fans inside Hulman Center.

The Sycamores are 4-0 on the year, and have now won 13-of-16 home games under second-year head coach Greg Lansing while Green Bay falls to 2-3.

In earning their first-ever victory over the Phoenix on the hardwood, the Sycamores strong defensive effort upped ISU’s record to a perfect 18-0 under Lansing in games in which the opposition scores less than 63 points. The Sycamores have now won 36 games by five points or less than 2005.

Printy, on a night in which he led the team with 12 points, connected on the game winner with 15 seconds left as he drilled a contested 3-pointer from the right side of the top of the circle to put the Sycamores ahead 57-56.

Green Bay called their final timeout with 6.7 seconds left and Alec Brown missed a jumper in which Carl Richard pulled down the defensive rebound and was fouled with just over one second remaining. A last second near full court heave fell harmlessly to the ground as ISU walked away with the win.

The Sycamores held a 34-32 lead at intermission, thanks to three free throws with 1:20 on the clock by sophomore RJ Mahurin.

Indiana State scored the first six points out of halftime, first on a jumper in the paint by Carl Richard for a 36-32 lead. Myles Walker hit a pair of free throws with 18:14 remaining for a 38-32 advantage and the lead stretched to a game-high eight on a short jumper from the right wing by freshman Justin Gant at the 17:16 mark.

Green Bay trailed 50-45 with 9:09 left after a lay-up by Walker, before the Phoenix hit three consecutive 3-pointers by Brennan Cougill and two in a row from Steve Baker for a 54-50 lead with 5:07 remaining.

Richard hit a jumper with 4:40 remaining to make it 54-52 before Terry Johnson laid the ball in with 2:32 remaining to go up 56-52. Green Bay would not score again in the game.

Steve McWhorter took a perfect bounce pass from Jake Odum with 1:58 remaining to cut the Green Bay lead down to 56-54, which set up Printy’s game winner with 15 seconds to go.

Printy hit four 3-pointers in the game to up his career total to 163 which moved him into second place all-time on ISU’s career list. He passed Eddie Bird’s 161 3-point-ers during the contest.

Mahurin scored all 10 of his points off the bench in the first half while Walker also hit double figures scoring with 10 points.

Overall, Indiana State converted 18-of-43 shots from the field (41.9 percent) and hit 6-of-15 treys (40 percent, with Printy going 4-of-7 from long range). The Sycamores held a 34-32 ad-vantage in rebounds.

Odum was limited to just three points in the game but tied a season-best with seven assists while also recording three steals in 31 minutes of action.

Greg Lansing is in his second season as the head basketball coach at Indiana State. He previously spent eight sea-sons with the program as an assistant coach, including the last three as as-

sociate head coach.

Lansing burst onto the scene as a rookie head coach with the Sycamore basketball program in 2010-11 as he became just the second-ever Indiana State head coach to lead the team to the NCAA Tournament in his first sea-son. He led the team to a 20-14 record, becoming just the 14th head coach in the history of the Missouri Valley Conference to lead a team to 20 or more victories in their first year at the helm.

ISU reached the NCAA Tournament and took on Syracuse in Cleveland, Ohio based on the program’s third-ever MVC Tournament Championship won at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Mo. ISU raced to the title with victories over No. 6 Evansville, No. 2 Wichita State and No. 1 Missouri State in the Champi-onship Game as the Sycamores entered as the No. 3 seed in the tournament. Freshman Jake Odum was named to the MVC All-Tournament Team.

Odum was named a CollegeInsider.com Mid Major Freshman All-American and was named an All-MVC Honorable Mention selection as well as a mem-ber of the MVC All-Freshman, All-Newcomer and All-Defense Team. Carl Richard was also named to the All-MVC’s Honorable Mention squad. ISU took two thrilling buzzer beating victories over league foes Missouri State and Creighton during the regular season at Hulman Center. The buzzer beater over Creighton by Richard was voted the No. 2 play of the weekend by ESPN’s SportsCenter.

In 2009-10 the Sycamores overcame a ton of adversity to still put together its best season in nearly a decade under the professional leadership of the ISU coaching staff. Despite only having its full compliment of student-athletes for just 28 minutes of the rough and tumble Missouri Valley Conference slate, the Sycamores still recorded its first winning season since 2001 as they finished 17-15. ISU also finished the year with a 9-9 record in league play, bolstering the Sycamores out of the MVC Opening Round at the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament by securing the league’s No. 6 seed after finishing in a tie for fifth in the standings.

Lansing has also been a major reason for several all-conference accolades for numerous players, including Harry Marshall and Jay Tunnell, who took All-MVC honors following the 2008-09 campaign and Marshall again in 2009-10. In 2008-09, the Sycamores concluded the regu-lar season by winning six of their final games, including a trio of road contests.

Lansing returned to Indiana State after a seven-year stint with the Iowa Hawkeyes. During Lansing’s seven years as assistant coach at Iowa, the Hawkeye’s went 135-92, received three NCAA Tournament invitations, three NIT appearances and won a pair of Big Ten tournament titles, the first of which came on four wins in four games making Iowa the first team in the Big Ten to accomplish such a feat. In 2005-06, Iowa earned a 25-9 record, the second-most wins in school history, the first undefeated (17-0) home record in the school’s history and a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Iowa earned seven All-Big Ten selections, 17 Academic All-Big Ten selections and four Academic All-Americans. Lansing coached four of the last five Big Ten rebounding champions, three straight conference leaders in blocked shots and, the league’s 2005-06 defensive player of the year. Three of his student-athletes reached the NBA and two from the 2005-06 team were invited to NBA camps.

In Lansing’s final two seasons of his first stint at Indiana State, the Sycamores posted back-to-back winning campaigns for the first time since 1979 and 1980. When the Sycamores posted a 16-11 record in 1998 it marked the first win-ning season for Indiana State since 1980. Indiana State advanced to the NCAA Tournament in both 2000 and 2001.

Prior to joining the staff at Indiana State, Lansing was the head basketball coach at Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, Iowa. Roosevelt had not had a winning season in 12 years before Lan-sing’s initial season. The Roughriders went on to have back-to-back win-ning seasons under his direction.

Lansing earned a Bach-elor of Science degree

from the University of South Dakota in 1990 and a mas-ter’s degree in counseling from USD in 1992. As a member of the Coyote basketball team Lansing helped South Dakota reach the NCAA Division II Tournament during his junior and senior seasons, the first NCAA invitation for USD since 1954. He was twice named the South Dakota Defensive Player of the Year. Greg is currently ranked among the leaders in career assists at USD. Following his playing career, Lansing served as a graduate assistant coach at South Dakota for two seasons. In 1992-93 he was a full-time assistant.

Lansing earned all-state honors in three different sports at Harlan Community High School, graduating in 1986.

Greg’s father, Dave Lansing, coached high school bas-ketball for 33 years in Iowa. Dave Lansing was inducted into the Iowa High School Athletic Association Coaches Hall of Fame during the 1999 Iowa boys state basketball tournament.

Lansing’s dad, his mother, Diane, his sister, Angela, and his nephew, Jordan, live in West Des Moines. His brother, Steve, is the head basketball coach at Faribault High School (Minn.), where he was named Regional Coach of the Year in 2004.

Lansing is married to the former Angie Menser, who is an Indiana State graduate and a former track and cross country academic All-American for the Sycamores. She currently serves as ISU’s senior women’s administrator and athletics business manager.
