The Matadors are currently second in the standings and one game back of first place as the team heads into its final month of the regular season. Northridge has won four straight and has not lost back-to-back games since March 29-30 at Long Beach State. Since that game, CSUN has gone 14-4 and has swept two consecutive conference series. MIDWEEK RECAP The Matadors completed a season sweep of the University of San Diego on Tuesday by taking a 6-4 win at Fowler Park to clinch the Battle of the Bullfighters. Northridge got the strongest pitching performance of Brycen Rutherford’s CSUN career as the junior allowed just one hit and one walk in seven innings of work. He carried a no-hitter into the seventh before a one-out single broke up his bid for history. Luckily for Rutherford, CSUN’s offense produced all of the runs it would need early in the game to get him the victory. Northridge scored six runs on all four of its hits in the top of the fourth inning. After a leadoff single by Michael Livingston gave the Matadors their first hit of the game, CSUN loaded the bases on a pair of walks. Joshua Goossen-Brown then drove in a pair with a double and Alexis Mercado hit a bloop that fell for an RBI single in left field. William Colantono brought a run home with a sac fly and Nicolas Osuna finished the rally with a single and an error that allowed two CSUN runners to score as the Matadors took a 6-0 lead. San Diego scored a run in the eighth with two outs and used a three-run home run in the ninth to draw closer before Goossen-Brown shut the door and picked up a one-out save for Northridge. A CLOSER LOOK AT UC DAVISThe UC Davis Aggies enter this weekend’s series with a 16-26 overall record and a 3-12 mark in Big West Conference play. Most recently, the Aggies defeated Santa Clara at Dobbins Stadium on Tuesday to snap a four-game losing streak. Their con-ference record does not indicate their quality, however, as UC Davis has already competed against then-No. 21 Cal Poly, then-No. 4 Cal State Fullerton, then-No. 21 UC Irvine and Long Beach State, four of the top five teams in the standings.

Nick Lynch leads the Aggies offensively and is hitting .353 in 41 games played. He leads the team in just a single category, having been hit by a pitch 18 times this year. John Williams leads the way with 33 RBIs for UC Davis and has collected a team-high four doubles while Paul Politi brings power to the plate and has 11 dou-bles to go along with five home runs.

Evan Wolf, Harry Stanwyck and Spencer Koopmans have combined for 32 of the team’s 42 starts on the mound this season and should all be featured in the series this weekend. Wolf leads the rotation with a 4.64 ERA and is 2-2 through 11 starts. He has just 16 strikeouts compared to 20 walks in 52.1 innings. Stanwyck is 3-5 with a 5.07 ERA and leads the team with 31 strikeouts on the hill while Koopmans is 1-6 with a 6.31 ERA in 51.1 innings. Max Cordy is the top relief man for the Aggies and is 5-5 in 20 appearances out of the bullpen this year with six saves. However, the UC Davis pitching staff has allowed 71 stolen bases in 94 attempts in 2013. Following the series with CSUN, UC Davis will travel to Pacific for three games next weekend.

MATADORS IN THE BIG WEST TOP TENWith the final four conference series left to play, the Cal State Northridge Matadors rank among the statistical leaders in the Big West Conference’s 11th standings release of the year. Northridge currently is eighth in team batting average (.263) and eighth in slugging percentage (.344). The Matadors are now fourth in the conference with 227 runs scored and are fifth with 382 hits recorded. Northridge has the sixth-best on base percentage (.348) and is third with 205 runs batted in. The Matadors are sixth in the league with 65 doubles and are fifth with 14 home runs. CSUN is second in the league with 51 sacrifice bunts and ranks fourth with 49 stolen bases.

Defensively, Cal State Northridge’s pitching staff is settling in to a position in the middle of multiple categories. Northridge has the fifth-best earned run average (3.88) and is fifth in strikeouts with 257. The pitching staff is second in the league with 90 strikeouts looking and is fourth with 26 wins. CSUN is sixth in the Big West with five runners picked off on the year. The Matadors rank seventh for hits allowed at 406 and are fifth with 195 runs allowed this season.

Individually, Miles Williams ties for second in the conference with seven home runs. Nathan Ring is currently second in the Big West with 27 walks drawn and is sixth with 10 steals while Chester Pak is tied for fourth in that category with 11 stolen bases. Kyle Attl ties for seventh for sacrifice bunts with seven. Joshua Goossen-Brown is tied for first in the league with a 1.000 fielding percentage. He has yet to make an error in 341 chances in the field and is tied for second offensively with 37 runs batted in. Alexis Mercado is currently tied for fourth in the conference with 12 doubles on the year.

Pitcher Jerry Keel ranks tied for third and John Salas ties for eighth in the conference having struck out 19 and 16 batters looking so far this year, respectively. Salas ties for 10th in the conference with 17 appearances on the season. Keel is tied for ninth in the league wth 54 strikeouts overall and ranks third with a 2.13 ERA. Goossen-Brown currently is fourth in the Big West with eight saves and is sixth with 13 games finished on the mound. All stats are current as of May 2 and include all games through May 1.

THAT’S GOLD, JERRY! GOLD! Sophomore left-handed pitcher Jerry Keel is building nicely off of his 2012 Freshman All-American status and has cemented his place as the Friday starter. Keel pitched seven shutout innings over Saint Mary’s and set a then-career high with seven strikeouts. Keel, the reigning Big West Conference Freshman Pitcher of the Year, conceded just four hits all afternoon. In a start at Washington State, he went 7.2 innings with five strikeouts and allowed just two runs. He added six strikeouts in 6.2 innings at Sacramento State and got a win over Utah Valley after striking out six in 6.0 innings. In the Big West Conference opener at Long Beach State, he went 6.0 innings with five strikeouts to earn the win for the Matadors. In the series opener against UC Riverside, he struck out a career-high nine batters in 8.0 innings of work to pick up his fourth win of the season. In the opener at Hawai’i, Keel struck out five and allowed just an unearned run on five hits in a complete game victory. He followed it up with another complete game over Pacific. Keel currently has a 2.13 ERA with 54 strikeouts in 71.2 innings pitched this year.

HE’S A RINGER!Senior outfielder Nathan Ring has been the lightning rod for the Matadors both offensively and defensively of late. Through 44 games, Ring leads the team with a .285 batting average and also leads the way with 30 runs scored. He has already belted three home runs this season, which are good for second. With 62 total bases, Ring leads the team and he has eight more walks than any other teammate at 27. Ring is second on the team with 10 stolen bases while his 47 hits rank first on the team. In the series at Sacramento State, Ring had five hits, four runs scored, three RBIs and two steals. In CSUN’s midweek game against San Diego on March 26, Ring turned in a career performance, going 5-for-5 with two RBIs, two runs scored and a sto-len base. He also had multiple-hit performances in the first two games at Long Beach State and now leads the team with 13

such outings. Against Washington, Ring hit a home run late and scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth as CSUN won 8-7. In the series sweep at Hawai’i, Ring went 6-for-13 with a double, RBI and five runs scored. He also collected a stolen base and improved his batting average by 15 points.

ATTL DO, KYLE, ATTL DOSenior shortstop Kyle Attl, the infield leader for CSUN, helped the team win on Opening Day against Saint Mary’s with both his bat and glove. Attl recorded three defensive assists in the game and went 1-for-3 with a double and run scored as the Matadors won 5-0. He went 1-for-1 in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader with a run scored, then went 2-for-4 with a run in the 8-3 victory in Sunday’s finale. During the trip to Washington State and Oregon, Attl drove in his first two runs of the campaign while getting a hit in five of the six games. Attl went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored against San Diego on March 26. In the game at San Diego on April 30, Attl made a highlight-reel catch to save CSUN’s no-hit bid in the bottom of the sixth as he went full extension to snag a soft pop fly to left field. Attl also walked and scored a run as the Matadors won 6-4. He is currently second on the team with a .284 batting average through 44 games. Attl tied for second on the team in runs scored last season and now has 68 in his career at Northridge. On the year, Attl has scoed 26 runs and has five stolen bases to go along with eight doubles and 20 RBIs.

NOT A ONE-MAN WOLFPAKSophomore Chester Pak is transitioning nicely into his role as the team’s starting right fielder in his second full season. In the Opening Day win over Saint Mary’s, Pak went 2-for-5 at the plate with a double, run scored and two RBIs. Late in the game, Pak also made a spectacular jumping catch to keep the hitter from certain extra bases. He had a hit in all four games of the opening series, one of two players on the team to do so. Pak recorded at least one RBI in all but one game of the series and also scored three runs and had a stolen base. Pak went 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored in the opener at then-No. 15 Oregon and had a career-high three hits in the opener against UC Riverside. In CSUN’s win over Washington, Pak went 2-for-5 and drove in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth. In the series sweep at Hawai’i, Pak went 5-for-12 with a double, RBI and three stolen bases. On the season, he is now batting .273 with 14 RBIs and 11 stolen bases in 42 games played.

THE GOOSE IS BACKJunior Joshua Goossen-Brown turned in a pair of three-hit games at the plate in the opening-weekend series against Saint Mary’s. In the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader, he went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and two runs scored. Then, in the series finale on Sunday, he again went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored in an 8-3 victory. In the win at USC, Goossen-Brown pitched 3.0 scoreless innings in relief to pick up the win and also drove in two runs and scored a pair of his own as the Matadors scored eight unanswered runs to win 9-4 in 11 innings. Goossen-Brown pitched a scoreless ninth at Washington State to record his first save of the season. In a doubleheader against Utah Valley, he picked up a save in both games to help the Matadors to a sweep. Against San Diego on March 26, he went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs and was a home run shy of the cycle against Loyola Marymount on April 2, collecting a career-high three RBIs in the process. After posting 10 hits across CSUN’s games from April 1 - April 7, Goossen-Brown was named the Big West Player of the Week. In the series sweep at Hawai’i, he drove in eight runs and had five hits, including his first home run of the season. Goossen-Brown is now hitting .283 and leads the team with 37 runs batted in. With 13 career saves on the mound, he ranks tied for second in school history and is two shy of setting the all-time record.

THE BULL MARKETSophomore Alexis Mercado performed well in his first weekend as the team’s starting catcher. Mercado caught three of the four games during the series against Saint Mary’s and hit .300 at the plate. He hit a double and scored three runs to bring his career totals to four and eight, respectively. In the Opening Day win, Mercado also cut down a runner trying to steal and has now caught a runner stealing 16 times in his career. At Washington State, he drove in his first run of the year by hitting his first career home run. In the series against Utah Valley, he recorded three hits, an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base. In the series sweep at Hawai’i, Mercado went 7-for-13 with two doubles and four RBIs as he had multiple hits in all three games. He caught a runner stealing and also threw out two more that tried to advance on pitches in the dirt. On the season, Mercado has 25 runs scored and a home run and leads the team with 12 doubles.

RETURN OF THE MACKSenior Cal Vogelsang returned from a wrist injury on April 26 and led the Matadors offensively with six RBIs in a three-game sweep of the Pacific Tigers. In his first game since March 1, Vogelsang went 3-for-4 at the plate and drove in three runs as the Matadors won 6-1. Although he went hitless in the second game, his squeeze bunt in the bottom of the eighth gave CSUN an important insurance run in a 5-2 victory. Then on Sunday, Vogelsang had a sacrifice bunt and two sac flies as he brought home a pair of runs in the 8-7 win. His sac fly in the bottom of the 11th came with the bases loaded to help the Matadors complete a rally after trailing 7-2 in the eighth. In just 12 games this year, Vogelsang has 15 RBIs, four sac flies and five sac bunts.

SHOW ME THE FERRA-MOOLAHSophomore Kyle Ferramola has taken a liking to the lineup lately and was on fire for the Matadors against Utah Valley. After moving from being strictly a pitcher to filling the DH slot in the series opener, Ferramola recorded a triple, single and two RBIs. In the second game of a doubleheader, he went 2-for-4 with a pair of solo home runs, including the game-winner in the bottom of the eighth to give CSUN a 5-4 win. For his work, Ferramola was named the Big West Player of the Week. In the series opener at No. 23 UC Irvine, he went 2-for-3 and now has five multi-hit games on the season.

BASEBALL STAFFHEAD COACH MATT CURTIS begins his third season at the helm of the Northridge Baseball program in 2012-13. Prior to coming to CSUN, Curtis was a major contributor in one of the West Coast’s most successful college programs. In 2012, Northridge improved its win percentage from the year before and also reached 10 wins in the Big West Conference for the first time since 2002. In his first season at Northridge, Curtis led the Matadors to a 23-33 season and saw a number of players receive postseason accolades, including two that were selected in the 2011 MLB Amateur Draft. Curtis came to CSUN from Fresno State where he served as assistant coach for a program that has won five consecutive Western Athletic Conference titles, made four NCAA tournament appearances in the last five years, and won the 2008 College World Series.

During his ten seasons in Fresno, Curtis compiled a 362-272 record. In addition to the National Championship in 2008, he helped coach the Bulldogs to five consecutive WAC titles, four straight NCAA Regional appearances, and playoff appearances in five of his ten seasons. Curtis first joined the Fresno State coaching staff as a student assistant for one season in 1998 before returning to the Bulldog bench two years later. From 2000-02, he served as volunteer assistant coach, working primarily with the catchers and hitters in conjunction with his duties as first base coach. With his catchers earning All-American honors during his two seasons as a volunteer, Fresno State wasted no time in recognizing his efforts and he was named the team’s assistant coach in July of 2002 by two-time National Coach of the Year Mike Batesole.

Included in the last eight recruiting classes that Curtis was responsible for assembling and developing are 40 first-team All-WAC, nine WAC Pitchers or Players of the Year, 12 All-Americans, five Freshman All-Americans, 39 overall draft selections, and five first round draft picks. In addition, four of his recruiting classes have gained top 20 national rankings and the 2010 recruiting class contains four recruits drafted by professional organizations who will end up on campus at Fresno State.

During the last three seasons, Curtis also served as the team’s pitching coach, third base coach, and defensive instructor of catchers, helping produce three All-WAC pitchers, and one WAC Pitcher of the Year. Five of Curtis’ pitchers were drafted by professional organizations with another six signing professional contracts during his three-year tenure as pitching coach. Curtis was also responsible for written communications with the Dugout Club, a fan based organization established to increase enthusiasm for Fresno State Baseball, and provide additional program resources. In addition to coordinating the annual golf tournament and “Meet the Team” dinner, he collaborated with alumni and members of Fresno’s business community to organize additional fundraising events.

As the primary individual responsible for maintaining and monitoring the eligibility of his student-athletes at Fresno State, Curtis has seen one of his players receive Academic All-American honors, another 41 named to the Academic All-WAC Team, with numerous players each season receiving academic recognition from the uni-versity.

A four-year letterwinner at Fresno State, Curtis started 155 games for former head coach Bob Bennett. Curtis can be found on numerous program Top-ten lists including games played (215), at-bats (761), hitsa (235), runs (144), doubles (52), walks (116), and RBIs (127). Curtis ranks fourth all-time with 52 career doubles, 22 of which were earned in 1995 when he finished atop the WAC statistics in that category.

During his time as a Bulldog student-athlete, his baseball team competed in four NCAA Regionals and won two WAC Championships in 1993 and 1995. A two-time WAC Scholar-Athlete Award recipient (1994-95), Curtis also earned WAC Academic-All Conference and WAC All-Conference Catcher accolades shortly after the 1995 season concluded. For his accomplishments and successes earned as a student-athlete and coach at Fresno State, Curtis was selected in the 2003 class of inductees into the Fresno State Baseball Hall of Fame.

After graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting in 1999, Curtis signed a professional contract with the Anaheim Angels organization. In his inaugural sea-son as a professional, Curtis set a single season Midwest League record for doubles and was named to Baseball America’s Minor League All-Star Team. During his five seasons of professional baseball, he received the Ray Perry Award - given to Northern California’s most outstanding first year minor league player - and reached the Double-A level as a member of both the Anaheim Angels and Cleveland Indians organizations.

A native of Visalia, Calif., Curtis earned his Master’s degree in Business Administration in 2001 from Fresno State. Curtis and his wife Kimberlee have three children - daughters Lauren and Allison and one son, Jacob.
