ELA/ELD Standards: Learning the letters  Zz & Yy, Story Elements

Week: May 11 - May 15, 2020

Daily Reading (10-15 min.)Choose a short story that you will read with someone in your family today and reread the rest of the week. Look at the pictures and tell the story. Who are the characters in the story? The characters are the people or animals that are in the story. They are who the story is about. 

Daily Writing (15 minutes)With help from someone in your family, draw the Story Element Chart on a piece of paper. In the Characters box, draw a picture of the characters in the story you read today. Label the characters in your drawing. Keep this paper for tomorrow’s activity.

Daily Sound /Letter Practice:

(15-20 minutes)Write the letter Z z on a piece of paper. Find 2 things that begin or end with the /z/ sound like “zap”. Draw a picture of them on your paper. This one is tricky because some words with the letter s in them sound like the /z/ sound. 

ENRICHMENT - Learning from our TV

Daily Reading (10-15 min.)Reread yesterday’s short story with someone in your family. Look at the pictures and tell the story. What is the setting of the story? The setting is where the story takes place. It tells where the story is happening. Sometimes it’s in more than one place, like at school, at the park, at the store.

Daily Writing (15 minutes)Use the Story Elements Chart that you made yesterday. In the Setting box draw a picture of where the story happened. Label the setting in your drawing. Keep this paper for tomorrow’s activity.

Daily Sound /Letter Practice: (15-20 minutes)

Go on Scavenger Hunt in your house. Have someone help you draw the Scavenger Hunt on a sheet of paper. Find one thing that begins with the /a/, /b/, /c/ , /d/, /e/, /f/, /g/, /h/ sound and draw it in the square.

Monday 5/11

Warm-Up / Stretch (5 minutes) :

Perform fifteen (15) jumping jacks Execute ten (10) jumps up and down Perform five (5) hops on one foot and then five (5) hops on the other foot

(Repeat all exercises above three (3) times)

Activity (20 minutes) :  

“ABC Balloon Volley”First, blow up 5 balloons and then write ABCDE on the first balloon, then FGHIJ on the second balloon, KLMNO on the third balloon, PQRST on the fourth, and finally UVWXYZ on the last balloon.  A  player calls out a letter and then a number 1-10. Other  Player needs to find correct letter on balloon and then strike the balloon with a body part  that number of times called out 1-10….Variation:  Sight words written on balloon,  Addition sentence.

Cool-Down / Closure (5 minutes) :

Take 10 deep breaths Start with your hands by the side of your body.

When you take a deep breath in through your nose, raise your hands up from the side of your body. When you breathe out through your mouth, lower your hands back down to the side of your body in the original starting position.

Tuesday 5/12

“Funnel Balloon Toss”(You can even use a ping pong ball!)

Find a funnel and blow up a few balloons.  Use the funnel as a way to keep the balloon in the air then try to “catch” the balloon in the funnel.   Each catch in the funnel earns a point and 10 points wins the game!  Play a minimum of 3 games.

Activity (20 minutes) :  

Fitness Wednesday - “Captain’s Orders”The game begins with one person being nominated to be the “Captain”.  They must give out commands to the crew The Captain is limited to a set of commands, which you can alter if you have specific goals to reach.  You could use a mixture of fun commands and physically demanding ones, like:

Captain’s coming The crew must salute the captain and stand at attention

Run to starboard/port The crew must run to the left (port) or right (starboard) sides of the room and touch the wall.

Scrub the deck The crew must do 10 pushups

Man the lifeboats The crew will perform 10 sit-ups while moving their arms like oars

After a few minutes, change captains so others get a chance to be in command.

“Bean Bag Tic Tac Toe Fitness”Create a Tic tac Toe board on the ground (Chalk or tape can be used.   Take turns tossing a bean bag to get three in a row.  Use the guide to do the correct exercise.

  Three in a row wins the game and then do a victory lap.

Music Enrichment Standards: Performing, Creating, Connecting, Responding to Music

Week: May 11 - 15, 2020

Responding to Music(10 minutes)Sing different favorite songs from last week and draw a picture of what the song is telling you and making you feel. Use your imagination.

Performing Music(10 minutes) Practice in front of the mirror singing different favorite songs from last week and showing the picture you drew from yesterday.Sing your favorite songs to a friend or family member while showing the picture you draw from yesterday. Use your face to show emotion.

Connecting to Music (10 minutes)Using pots, pans, cooking utensils. Explore the different sounds you can make. And organize the sounds each pot  and pan make from low sound (i.e. large pot, pan) to high sound (i.e. small pot, pan)

Creating Music(10 minutes)Using the created sounds from yesterday’s pots and pans exploration, create sound effects (a pattern of sound, mixing high and low sounds) for each character in the book you are reading this week. Then read the book with the sound effects.

Performing Music(10 minutes)Practice reading the book with the sound effects from yesterday.Perform reading the book with the sound effects from yesterday to a friend or family member.
