Did you ever think that you have a dream but youcan't reach it? Did you ever think that you can dosome thing but people destroy that hope? Many teens nowadays have many dreams inside thembut they never have the chance to let out their dreamsto the outer world. And suddenly we find out thatthe dream is dying and we don’t even bother. Is it our fault or the outer world’s fault? Then we askourselves should we dream again? Should we havehope again? And suddenly we find that we don’t trustthe world again or even trust people. We have to askfor the chance and the right to show our dreams. We

have to confess to ourselves that we must not giveup. Dreams are like air, we can’t ever give up breathing. Our dreams are like water and we can’t give updrinking. By the way if you ever give up your dreamyou’ll find yourself always giving every thing up. Ibelieve that when we find a new dream, it’s a kind ofa new hope you’re bringing to life. Never forget thewords, hope, faith and dream. Because those are thewords which will help you to always bring a new dreamto life and to never give up.

Reem Ahmed, 15

When we mention this word, does it mean‘impossibility?’ Have all our dreams become animpossible thing that’s hard to achieve? Is the problemin us or in our destiny? All of us dream, who doesn't?Who doesn't dream of success or wealth or love ormarriage or children? I'm one of those people thatdepend on dreams in my life and I'm in a continuousattempt to fulfill my dreams. I just want to analyzethe problem by this fictional story:

A guy spent all his life studying and dreamt of beinga doctor. He was advanced in his studies then hejoined the faculty of Medicine. He then spent yearsstudying his difficult subjects and dreamt about hisgraduation. He eventually graduated and thoughtthat he would start his practical life; working andgetting married to the girl he loved. He dreamt oftheir wedding day, their children and their lovely life. Then all his dreams collapsed because he didn't findthe work he dreamt of and the only offer he got forwork was as a salesperson (going from door to door). Also his beloved couldn't wait for him for a long timeso she left him. As a result he couldn't stand it andfelt depressed and after some time, he committedsuicide.

Imagine if you were exposed to a situation like that! What would be your feelings? Was it his mistake orwhose? So, when you dream, please leave the depression andonly take the faith; yes, the faith in God, who is theonly One who could take your dream and make itcome true and prevent all the obstacles. Because Hecreated you and knows you and all your feelings andthoughts and mistakes and can utilize anything. Doyou think it's impossible to find a job and earn moneywhen there is employment in your country? Or doyou think it's hard to make a living so you can marryyour beloved and start a family? That's nonsense!Where’s your faith in God who gives you the patienceand the willpower, mind and creation? Don’t everthink that your future is determined based on yourgrade results in school or university. No, that's justthe beginning. God gave you skills and talents andyou must use them. And believe me this will workmore for you than your studies because they are realgifts and you use them without waiting for a grade. So don't ever give up and say, “Oh, what can I do?

It’s out of my hands!!" WAIT! You can beat the oddsas long as live.

Even when you face some problems or disloyalty orpeople who don't have any virtues or any values, remember that in our life there is evil as there is good,so we must bear and face those people. And don'tforget that there may be some people that are jealousfrom your talents and your ideas and envy you. Don'tgive those people the chance to ruin you becauseonce they find that you’re destroyed, they’ll triumphover you and search for another person to destroybecause that's their job in life! So don't ever annuldreaming or giving up because that's your dream;you own it and no one on earth has the right to seizeyour dream. Neither fate nor any person nor anycircumstance could influence you or take away yourdream. All you have to do is to have real faith in Godand His great ability and your own self-confidence.

So let’s summarize the case:1- You’ve got the right to dream what you wantbecause dreams are unlimited2- We don't live in Paradise so for sure you’ll facesome wrong ways and wrong people3- Release yourself from any depression or feeling ofbetrayal4- Don't turn to or hear any person who wants todestroy your dream, steal it or get you depressed5- Believe in God and his great ability in changingany bad situation6- Faith in God is your weapon, so keep it with youand keep it strong and place it in front of any depressionor envious person7- Keep your self-confidence and confidence in yourtalents and skills8- Keep your dreams!9- Keep your dreams!10- Keep your dreams!

Last but not least, your dream is you, your being, andyour existence - as long as you dream, as long as youexist.

After my first article I startedto write a lot, even more thanthe old days. My topics werealways about feelings and teens’emotions. I decided then toexpress my feelings to my bestfriends through Teen Stuff asall of us read the magazine. So I entered the Clean and ClearCompetition. And the surprisewas that I really won secondplace. At that time I knew thatit would be the next level formy writing skills.

I always loved writing poemsand so that was my next stationin Teen Stuff. So I startedsending them my poems thatalways talked about love, friendships, hurt, and purity. And when my first poem waspublished I felt that finally Ilearned how to unleash mythoughts. I knew that thiswasn’t the end of the road. Istarted contacting the EditorialManager, Marwa Yehia. Shewas the first person I knew fromthis wonderful crew. I couldn'tever imagine that I couldactually have a friend like her.

During the summer vacation Iwanted to really get to knowthe whole crew, even

Mrs. Manal Al-Mahdy. And mywish came true, when I read inthe magazine about thesummer workshop. I talked toMarwa, whom I had nevertalked to before, and when Itold her that I wanted to takeplace in the workshop shesurprised me by saying that Icould go the next day for theinterview.

Next day it was my time to meetthe next wonderful person inthe magazine from the EditorialStaff; Doaa Samy. You all musthave heard about her. She’sthe one who writes What If…?We sat in the teens’ room, theroom which contains all thedreams, all the wonderfulmoments that any team wouldlove to share together. Shestarted asking me really hardquestions and I startedanswering while my heart wasshaking! At the beginning Iwas so terrified because it wasmy first time to be interviewed. But suddenly we startedlaughing as if we knew eachother already. At the end shetold me that they’ll call me totell me when the workshop willstart.

Two days passed and I waitednext to the phone, suddenly Ifelt that I was asking to reachthe stars and that I’d never getto know the team and be oneof them. Next day I calledMarwa and she told me thatshe was about to call me to tellme that we were starting thefollowing Sunday. I felt like Iwanted to scream! Finally Igot the chance to be there. Istarted jumping all over thehouse (by the way, thank youmom for handling my crazymoments!) Now back to whereI was. Yeah Sunday…here Icome!

Now it was time to get to meetthe other people who had thesame dream to be one of TeenStuff’s team.I wasn’t so scared because Iwas ready to meet new peopleand share with them mythoughts. Plus, they made mereally comfortable. I got tomeet ‘Miss Green;’ I mean youSoundos. She is the most‘greenish’ person you can evermeet and, by the way, she wasfrom the Editorial Staff too.And the next ‘purplish’ personwas Miss Purple; Radwa, themost ‘pinkish purplish’ and

Before I start, I want to tell yousomething straight from my heart (andmind) to yours, a secret between youand me. When I thought about writingthis article, I was mainly trying to helpmyself by setting up a check point formy very own sake. Nevertheless, you'reinvited, so read on… give yourself sometime and try it out.

Speaking of time, some people mightgo, "Nah, I don't have enough time."Well, believe it or not, nobody has enoughtime! Even those who claim that theydo have enough time - don't! Yes, evenpeople spending their time chatting onthose music channels and ‘sms-ing’,‘mms-ing’ or whatever ‘essing’ don't haveenough time. They just aren't aware ofit and they'll only take notice of that factonce they decide to get a life. So, makeuse of the time you have. For the timebeing, concentrate on finding out whatthe whole check point thing is all about. The definition of check point is: "A place, especially on a border, where an officialperson examines vehicles or people."Let's make it a bit more abstract bysimply saying that it's just a point tocheck whether something matches thecriteria to be forwarded on or not.Logically, a check point is only therewhere it's necessary, e.g. you wouldn'tfind a check point every second crossroad, for God's sake! Naturally, only importantthings are checked. There are anuncountable number of important thingsbut what's more important than the very, very special you? Don't be shy, admit it,there are very few- if any, more importantmatters, at all, other than one's self andthis doesn't always have to be a badthing.

Thanks to their importance, special thingsneed attention and maintenance, or elseyou're – sooner or later - in for trouble. You go to a doctor to check your health(mainly physical.) And right now, you'llhead to the nearest check point for yourmind. No, I'm not by any means sayingthat you’re crazy but this life of ours candrive just about anybody mad; there'sno need to wait till you are.Now that you know why you need ityou're in need of knowing what to dowhen there. Don't worry, it's tried andtested, you can safely do this on yourown. Basically, it's just an analysis ofyour current state to make sure thatyou’re capable of pursuing your life theway you want and are ready to face whatit takes. Call it introspection. Think deeplyand critically about your concepts andperceptions. Are you satisfied with them? Do they make enough sense and provideyou with enough strength and supportyou need for the walk of life you desire? Many of us make this classic mistake ofembracing cliché we don't fully grasp orblindly follow concepts we’re not fullyconvinced of. We think that by goingwith the flow we’re on the safe side. Yet,going with the flow could lead you to thefall (geographically as well asmetaphorically.)

There are numerous concepts and beliefs, how would you know that you picked theright one? Think, contemplate, analyze, examine and prove! Once you've‘checked’ a belief and/or concept thatyou've thoroughly thought about and the

outcome pleases you, then be sure thatyou've made the right choice and foundthe source that triggers your actions. With that matter cleared, check the goalyou're struggling for. Logically, it shouldcorrespond to your conceptual choice. There's no way that a vegetarian wouldsave for opening a branch of McDonald's,right? Hey, since we're at it, why shouldthere be a goal in the first place? Whywalk, run and struggle for a goal, evenif it's right? Why tire yourself at all?Have a seat, relax. Wouldn't that bebetter? Short-term answer, yes; thosewho sit, won't fall. Long-term answer,no; those who sit won't fall yet theydefinitely won't rise.On the other hand, those who walk, runand struggle could fall, but it's only amatter of time till they get up again andthey'll rise when they reach their goal. And unforgettable is the feeling of havingreached your goal, a real on-top-of-the-world feeling, too precious to be missed!Reaching this goal is also the result ofhaving applied your principles. Great! You know what you want and why youwant it. The only thing that's left is howwill you get it.This is exactly when your skills come in.A sixteen year old girl, who believes inthe necessity of success and wants tomake her parents proud of her, needs toimprove her mathematical skills to getthe grades she wants - ahem, ahem! Wasthat me talking to myself? Of coursenot, just don't tell my math teacher, I'mworking on it, he’d be surprised. Wouldn'tit be such a pity if you know what youwant but are too damn lazy to work forit? Test your skills, discover your weakpoints and don't be ashamed of them;work! Even if you're allegedly not goodenough you’ll be good enough, there'sno reason why you won't. Do you stutter?Work on not doing that. Are youoverweight? Go and work out. Do youlack some general knowledge? Read andget informed. Perfection is impossible

but you can reach a state close toperfection if you work for it and keepworking for it, this is possible. Whoknows, maybe I'll work so hard on mymath that it interests me enough as acareer! You never know. Before youstorm off, remember that if you combineyour firm belief with a reachable goalarmed with your skills, then you sure diddo something to be proud of - storm offin peace and brake every now and thenat a check point. See you there!Waiting for your feedback!

Last year a great impact happened to my daily life, as Iwas introduced to the most wonderful magazine; TeenStuff, the magazine which brought a change to everyteen's life and especially mine. I started reading TeenStuff since it published my first article (Mixed Feelings.)Teen Stuff really encouraged me to look and believe inmy talents. It gave me the spirit of challenge, whichhelped me a lot in my life.

white hearted person I ever met. Then I got to know the newcomers, who were in my samesituation and had the samefeelings I had; Mahie, Dina,Essra, Yasser, Madiha, Finan,Mohamed Bahar, MohamedKhater, Kareem and Omar.

Next day we started early in themorning, we talked laughed andeven played games. We hadlunch together as one big family.I met the funniest person in themagazine who really gave it anunusual spirit. Nadia, she is theone who is always on the phoneanswering your phone callssaying, “Teen Stuff, Kelmetna,ALOOO.” I loved talking to herI spent really good times withher.

Days passed and passed and

suddenly we found that we wereabout to end the workshop'swonderful days. Everyone wasgetting ready for the projectsand we were divided into teamsbut actually we were working allthe time together. We hadRomeo and Juliet, the twotalented farmers, and the threemusketeers.

The last day came of theworkshop. Every one felt reallybad that day but we all tried tocheer up each other by sayingthat we’d be seeing each otherafter the workshop. Noweveryone started to concentrateon the project and, honestly, everyone preformed really well. And everyone was amazed thatwe had the creativity to do this.

Now, starting a new life afterthe workshop, we started to haveonly one meeting which broughtus all together. It was also onSunday and it was for our clubThink Green. We had a lot offun and of course each one of

us had his own meetingsduring the rest of theweek.

Usually in the morning Istart my day with themby teasing Nadia andMarwa, of course. And Iforgot to mention thesweet kitten, Rania; she’sa real kitten. But the daycame that I had to leavethem as I live in Kuwait. It was the hardestmoment because I gotused to waking up really earlyto go to the meetings. And Igot used to the home thatbrought all of us together.Everyone really loves each otherover there and no one ever callsthe magazine a working placebut we all call it ‘THE BIG PINKHOUSE’…of course, every onechooses his own color!

When I came back to Kuwait Ididn’t think of anything exceptabout them. I really missedmy daily life over there. I justwrote this article to show youguys how much I love you andto say that YOU MAKE ADIFFERENCE IN MY LIFE! Thankyou all for everything and specialthanks to my lovely angelsMarwa and Nadia. I’ll neverforget what you did for me.At the end, I should say thatwhen anyone on earth reallyloves some one, he or she reallymisses them so much. Andthat’s how I feel and I want tosay to:

Mahie: I miss you so much

sweetie.Finan: I wish I had gottenthe chance to say goodbye.Madiha: I miss your voice.Essra: I hope you’ll keepyour talents up.Dina: Keep writing songsand keep your smile.Yasser: Don't ever let go ofpolitics.Omar: I miss your guitarand you of course.Bahar: I also wanted to saygoodbye.Khater: I had hoped to seeyou but I know you’rebusy…SLEEPING!!Kareem: I really feel that Iknow you really well althoughwe didn’t talk much.

At the end I want to send myregards and thanks to my threemoderators, Radwa, Soundosand flowery Doaa. Love youall.....

It was the picture that was takento apply for nursery school. Ican really consider it aparticularly important part in

our home. It’s hung under theclock on one of the wooden, long rectangular, stand-likes.On the other side is the big bookcase that also has a special placefor pictures. Recently, mygraduation picture has joinedthe group!

I was watching the television, when suddenly I asked mom,“What if cameras were neverinvented?” Mom paused for a

while then replied saying, “Therewere many professional artiststhat used to draw really finepaintings.” Well, that’s all right,

drawings and paintingsreally move me;especially when drawnby pencils. I feelattached and attractedto them. But come on,you won’t find an artistwaiting for you when youwake up so early in themorning to put on yourschool uniform and getready to go school on

the first day! You won’t find anartist so quick to draw a pictureof you and your brother or sisterin a moment, when you bothburst out laughing whilestanding in the balcony duringa quiet, pale orange, afternoon! And I’m sure you can’t find anartist using his colors to paintyour glorious new feast clotheswhile you’re pretty andflourishing to wear them!

But you will find a camera!Guys…a camera can just do!

I believe in the Fine Arts and I’mfond of drawing in general. Twoyears ago, I took a course in theFaculty of Fine Arts. I was thrilledto practice drawing andsometimes even portraying. Ilearned basics that are nowcarved in my mind. Yet, I stillbelieve that drawing andphotographing are two verydifferent things. A highly sensitivepassion pushes you to hold yourpencil and draw…translating thefeelings, the actions and thehidden potentials on top. While apicture acts as a bell moving youback to that time and place, ithas no art (but I don’t meanprofessional photography; I meanwhen anyone picks up a cameraand takes snapshots of people). They’re really different.

What do you feel when you touchyour own old pictures? Aren’t theyshowing your facial expressions? The way your eye looks? Or yourexact, pure, white smile? I cantell you that I can even smell howhappy or sad I was in that place,if it was hot or cold, comfortableor tiring, and was it a fake or areal smile on my face then!

If there were no cameras, I franklydon’t know how I would go on.Never think I’m over- reacting.Memories are as important asfood stuff and other crucial thingsin our lives. I’m sure they aren’tso only to me; just because I canguarantee you a deep starewhenever you see your picturewith your old school friends afterturning 60 years old. I can alsoguarantee that you’ll pick thosepictures and show them to yourchildren and even grandchildrensaying, “See how stunning yourgrandpa/ma used to be duringthose striking youthful years!”

For a widow or widower…howmuch would a picture showing

the old loving couplebe worth? Memoriesare one’s history andanyone withouthistory is worth justnothing! And sincepictures are the livingpart of a memory thena picture is worthone’s history. Andsince a camera is theonly device that canproduce thosehistories, then peoplewould lack flashbacks;would lack a reallyimportant function intheir minds which isto remember, buthardly remember.

If we had no camerasto collect the mostremarkable events in

our lives, we would have forgottenzillions of events. We alreadyforget sometimes while holdingthe picture, draining our mindsto get that info about what washappening when that picture wastaken…so what about withouthaving the picture at all?! Nothingwould prove that event you mayhave forgotten but an old photo. Moreover, I wouldn’t have knownhow I looked like in each separatestage of life. I sure know myface, but as time goes on, nothingwould prove it to others and evento me as I feel I need to see the‘first’ me!

I so much appreciate my pictures!I have a big album and I’m deadsure that you personally have onetoo. But what might differ is thatI refresh my memory every nowand then. I try as much as I can

to check on my old and recentpictures to remember andremember.

“Pictures and photos are, honestly, treasures showing all your goldtimes, always remember toremember them.”

Now, you tell me how often doyou check on your treasures?Any answer would be fine; if youreally do remember to do that. But I just want to ask you a favor. Before you write me back, I wantyou to take a look now. Seeyourself in those mirrors and tellme, WHAT DO YOU FEEL? A Highly Respected Citizen“Haloo ya Haloo… Ramadan Kareem Ya Haloo,” sang the five year oldFawzya, the daughter of the highly respected Egyptian citizen RamadanAbd El Aal Metaal. The highly respected citizen Ramadan Abd El Aal Metaal has twochildren, Fawzya, who celebrates the holy month each year by chantingfrom morning till night and Hassanein who marks the time of breakingthe fast each year by smashing the window of one of their belovedneighbors with his football. The holy month was due to start in twodays and the big boss of the happy family, Mrs. Ramadan Abd El AalMetaal, decided it was high time to get all the missing items in theshopping list. Together the happy family of the highly respected citizenRamadan Abd El Aal Metaal went to the closest place in the hearts ofEgyptian families; Carrefour. The place was bustling with people of various sizes and classes.Together the smell of peoples’ perspiration with that of the nuts andthe other saviors of Ramadan created an odor that, I bet, if thosepeople who work in Christian Dior kept experimenting for ages wouldn’treach it.The wife of the highly respected citizen Ramadan Abd El Aal Metaalcouldn’t be bothered by such petty stuff and held her children's handsand squeezed into the store. In the meat section, women stood in -what only Egyptians can call lines; each waiting for her order, an orderwhich when received fills the cart completely. Women ended up pushingtwo more carts to the cashier. Of course Mrs. Ramadan Abd El AalMetaal was a very economical lady and was satisfied with just one cartand three baskets.Mrs. Ramadan Abd El Aal Metaal was busy counting the items in thecashier and making sure that she didn’t forget her 10 chickens and 12kilos of meat, while her husband the highly respected Egyptian citizenwondered how much he could profit if he turned their garage in to asupermarket during the holy month.

On the first day of the holy month, the kitchen of the highly respectedcitizen was full of action preparing to receive their relatives for breakfast. The wife of the highly respected citizen Ramadan Abd El Aal Metaal

was giving her orders to the threemaids she borrowed from herneighbor, Madam Attaya BentOum Attaya.Mrs. Ramadan Abd El Aaal Metaalhad to honor her husband on thatspecial day in front of his pickyrelatives. Therefore, as customhas it, she had to do her best tofeed them till they begged formercy. For starters, she prepareddates with milk, chicken soup, soup with meat balls and salad. The first course in the mealconsisted of fattah followed bygrilled chicken with potatoes andtourley (basically every singlekind of vegetable you can lay yourhands on) and brown rice. Thesecond course consisted of friedmeat and macaroni with whitesauce. Other than the courses inthe meal there would also be friedchicken wings, grilled meat withmushroom sauce, meat fingers, koubebah, mahshee and keshek. For dessert Mrs. Ramadan AbdEl Aal Metaal prepared katayef, kounafa, basbousa, khoushaf andfruits. As for the drinks amar eldeen, kharoub and karkadeehwere prepared.

Away from the noisy kitchen anddown to the streets, was wherethe highly respected citizenRamadan Abd El Aal Metaal wastrying to make his way out of allthe cars in hope of reaching homeearly to grab a nap beforebreakfast. The highly respectedcitizen Ramadan Abd El Aal Metaaltried to control his temper everytime a car next to him decided tojump the traffic. No I'm fasting,he reminded himself, until a henlanded on his car. Shocked, thehighly respected citizen RamadanAbd El Aal Metaal grabbed thefirst man he saw and hit him inthe face. People gathered andthe highly respected citizenRamadan Abd El Aal Metaal, outof panic, started to hit the peopletoo. The woman whose chickenflew out of the window and landedon the highly respected Egyptiancitizen Ramadan Abd El AalMetaal's car, in fear of having herhead chopped off like her sisters, started screaming and cursingthe highly respected citizen

Ramadan Abd ElAal Metaal. Inresponse, thehighly respectedcitizen RamadanAbd El Aal Metaalstarted cursingand swearingtoo. The highlyrespectedEgyptian citizenonly realizedwhat he wasdoing when theowner of thechicken threw abucket of dirty

water over his head. He thenrealized that it's the holy monthand one shouldn’t swear or fight.Lightheartedly, he smiled, got intohis car and drove away.

Time flew like a breeze and itwasn’t long before Fawzya, thedaughter of the highly respectedcitizen Ramadan Abd El AalMetaal, started chanting, followedby a loud bangher brother hadcreated from theeffect ofthrowing the ballinto the windowof Madame AttyaBent Oum Attya. It was then thatthe motherrealized it's time.Everybodyattacked thedinner table likethose whohadn’t seen anyfood in ages. Allmouths were fullwith food andforeheads withsweat. Peoplewho finished allthe coursesrepeated theround again andthose whodidn’t, preferredto concentratetheir efforts ontwo or three

One of the awfully palpablesymptoms is the lack of jobopenings everywhere. You findfresh graduates in high spiritsin their last year, eager to startapplying what was studied toreal life. Enthusiastic acts asa life-size push to have youthlet out all the inside potential. But suddenly they face thetruth. They face the bitternessof being rejected – despitebeing highly qualified - justbecause of that other guy/girlwho is somehow related to thecompany owner, or theprincipal is his/her uncle orwhatever relationship isbetween them!

But, I always like tostop for a while andthink of a differentview. Let’s try toblame ourselves thistime. How manypeople are we inEgypt? Around,76,000,000 (2004);Eh?! What countrycan grant 30 milliongreat jobs for its 30million labor force ofhoping youth?! WhatI want to reach is thatwe do NOT have tostart great! Insteadof leaving the wholecountry and startsearching someplaceabroad ending upwith a small job, whynot accept anothersmall job; but here? Then when you excel, you’ll definitely beplaced wherever youshould be and aimedto reach. We have to

learn patience. I confess, I’mone of those who have to learnpatience! As long as I’m goingdown the right path, workinghard and exerting effort, Imustn’t worry; because Godwon’t ever disappoint me.

This month, the Think GreenClub decided to hold a show, and let you all take a look atthe ‘Weirdest Jobs’ you canfind here in Egypt as a resultof the lack of opportunities, ormaybe (and I support thiscoming reason more) due toindolence and lassitude. All inall, you’ll find both. The oneswho really fight, and try to do

anything to make a living -which I exceedingly respect, and those who take the easiestway to get people’s money inone way or another.

READY! Start now!

P.S. Forgive us for using someArabic expressions! You’llrecognize that sometimes, it’simpossible to translate suchcomments!

1- The so called‘M.E.N.A.D.Y’Have you ever driven your car andsuddenly found yourselfsurrounded by lots of cars andpeople all over you? At that instantyou reach a conclusion which is,you are near a mall or somethingof that sort! Since you’re near amall, then the next fact would befinding a smiling man standing infront of your car telling you,‘ETFADDAL YA BASHA!!’ He insistsbadly that you should park in theplace he offers you. Plus, he mighttake your seat and park it himself, how generous he is! But the majorproblem is that you don’t want topark in the first place because youdon’t want to go to the mall -again in the first place!Anyway, if you want to go into themall and park in this place afterhe gives you the guidelines andassistance, which are actuallyuseless, you’ll definitely hear,‘TA3ALA YA BASHA, TA3ALA,TA3ALA, HOB! ENTA KEDA LEBESTYA BASHA.’ You get out of the carand you find the man coming toyou wearing a name tag and othertimes wearing a uniform, eithertelling you that he wants whateveramount of money you give him orspecifying a certain amount ofmoney. You try to say that you’llgive him the money when youcome back, but his excuse is thathe has to leave right now becausehe’ll be changing his shift. Theyalways say that.I once met one, which you canconsider the first type who tellsyou, ‘ELLY TEGEEBOH YA BASHA.’I didn’t have any change exceptfor L.E.5, so I gave it to him. Ifound him objecting andcomplaining that he’s beenstanding in the sun all day, Ireplied acting a bit harsh, “Heyyou! That’s all what I have foryou!” He then responded,“KHALAS YA BASHA, WALAYEHEMMAK.”The second type is unfortunatelyworse; supposedly, they work forsome kind of company or with thegovernment. They’re supposed totake money and in return, give aticket that proves that they tookmoney from those parking theircars but of course that doesn’thappen; as they take the moneyfor themselves and they give NOtickets. Finally, I’m trying hard to let myvoice reach someone; to finish upwhat I call a misery. I’m trying tostop being negative, at least by

pointing out the weak points wehave in our society.

2- CreativeWays ofBegging As Doaa mentioned at the verybeginning, people get educated tohave a job in the future which theycan earn a living from. But whatabout those people who didn’thave the chance to get that kindof education? They then chooseto get money in a very creativeway. The new creative ways ofbegging! In the old days, people used tobeg to get money for a really goodreason -not sure but at least thepercentage of good people washigher than what it is now – givingreasons like illness, or an accidentetc… But nowadays people foundout that this way of begginghumiliates them. So they decidedto invent a new way which willfulfill their desires. They make begging look like aclassy thing and it also has somerules that every beggar shouldfollow. For example, each beggarhas his own street or road, and ifany other beggar starts begging

on that road a bigfight happens. One ofmy friends once toldme this story. A mancame up to him, helooked just fine, wearing fine clothes, and even smelt good.He asked my friend ifhe can speak to himfor a second. Then hesaid, "Excuse me Mr.But I come from areally far place and Ileft my wife and kidsalone, and now I haveno more money to goback. Could youplease give me somemoney which will helpme travel back to myplace?”My friend didn’t knowwhat to say but heexclaimed asking,"Why did you leavethem alone when youhave no money?" So,that’s how begginggoes on these days;you can’t tell whichbeggar needs themoney and which one

doesn’t. But what I can adviceyou with is, whenever you go outmake sure that you have enoughmoney to help people who justwant your money, everywhere!

3- Mobile,Mobile, MobileThanks to our lovely two mobilenetworks, that leave us most ofthe time with no credit to even‘miss call’ anybody, most of thetime, we find ourselves in need tomake a phone call, especially inpublic places where people loseeach other easily. It started withkiosks having business mobile linesand charging for phone calls in arange of pt50 to L.E.1 per minute.

It’s reached the point of having aperson standing in the street infront of universities, malls andmain squares with a sign besidehim saying, ‘Talk Freely, pt75 perMinute” with a picture of a babyusing a mobile or something. Youfind that person yelling toeverybody in the street, “Mobile!Mobile! Mobile!” It’s really asuccessful, creative idea, aseverybody needs to make suddenphone calls, without having to buya phone card; paying only per

4- The PaidPatientOne of the weirdest jobs I’veheard about -which I doubt I caneven call a ‘job’ is a person whooffers his body for students whostudy medicine to practicallypractice on him. Yes! Surprisinglyenough it’s true. If he has a certaindisease they give him money inorder to see for themselves thesymptoms and test on him theirdiagnostic skills. And that is howthis person pays his bills! Actuallywhat’s even more surprising ishow the students do this as if it’snormal! Well this makes mewonder why would anyone dosuch a thing?! Is it because hehas no skills to fit in any otherjob? Is he a lazy person whodoesn’t want to work? Or is itbecause of unemployment? Howdesperate and frustrated is he todo such a humiliating thing?! Ican only imagine.

5- The LectureNotesSalesman “The professor walked into theroom at exactly 8:15 a.m. Heclosed the door, walked to the

microphone and said that he won’tlet anyone inside after him.”This seems like an introductionto a story, or me describing mynormal day at college. But no,this is actually what is written inlecture notes that are sold.

We are all familiar with differentsold items. But have you heardof the guy who sells lecture notesat universities? I have and it wasby far the strangest job I haveheard of. The first time I heardthat such a job existed was in myfirst year of college. A friend ofmine was trying to elude one ofthem who was asking herconstantly to give him that day’slecture to add missing informationto his notes before selling them. So, I thought of finding out moreabout this job. They’re in everycollege no doubt. They are mostlyguys ranging in age from 21 to28. And they can be useful forsome students out there who

missed a lecture or don’t haveany interest of attending in thefirst place, which makes it asuccessful business as there areplenty of students who don’tattend!

I, myself, have thought more thanonce to resort to them instead ofasking other unhelpful students.Their notes are preferable andmore useful than any otherstudent or friends’ notes becausethey write everything, and I meanEVERYTHING! I heard somepeople refer to them as ‘TheHuman Type Writers’ as they writewhatever is said and done insidethe lecture hall. I read parts ofone lecture note and it seemedpretty funny how they write thereaction of the professor, whenexactly did he laugh, when did hesay a joke in between explanationsand how he threatens the studentsto make the exam real hard ifthey don’t keep quiet.Believe me, whatever comes outof the professor’s mouth is written. Since some of them aren’tstudents, they don’t really havea sense of judgment towardswhat’s to be left out and what’snecessary. They fear neglectinga very important piece ofinformation, so they recordeverything on paper. The pricerange of one note usually equalsthe price range of photocopying. But it increases a few pounds onceexam time approaches.

In spite of its weirdness, it stillshows how people think of oddand creative ways to earn moneyfor a living.

6- So They SayMr. MicrobusAssistant“Aiwa ogra elly rekeb odam---el3arabya fadya wara!” Most of themare very noisy and annoying. They

have their own language with thedrivers. They know how to sendthem messages on when to stop,to drop off or pick a person up.They collect money from peopleand try to cheer up the atmospherein the microbus. Their language isof course down-to- earth! Theycall people on the streets whilehanging out from the supposedlyclosed door, yelling, “Ta3ala Ramsis!Aiwa Saeyda Aisha!” They have avery strange job. The microbusdriver can manage without theirhelp, just like microbuses that puta sign in the front telling thedestination, and collect moneythemselves from people. However, they’re really funny, and a part ofthe Egyptian street life. I can notimagine driving in the streets ofEgypt without hearing therecognized voices calling, ‘Abbasel 3a2ad? Tayeb, 3asher 3asher!!”

Yasser Abbas, 18

7- A FrankQuestion

“Hey guys, you seem rich; howcan we take your money?!”All what you have read are realways to do something and take

money in return. But what if youwere asked that clear question?Let me tell you the story.

I was with my Dutch family in KhanEl-Khalili, during their last visit toCairo two months ago. As we justwalked in front of a bunch of sellers- and you know how narrow thestreets in Khan El-Khalili are. Theykept on smiling and walking aroundour place when suddenly I heardthat comment! My aunt andcousins are Dutch, and neitherspeak nor understand Arabic butthey look Middle Eastern. So,surprisingly, those coarse peoplesaid it in English to let themunderstand!! See how rude? I’mEgyptian and I know all about thosepeople but what about theforeigners, huh? They love Egyptand love its kind generous peoplebut what about after hearing that? To our good luck, my familylaughed and thought they werekind of psycho or something; simply

because no one would dare saythat face to face!!

The two minarets which were supposedto be above the portal, had an unfortunate fate,as one fell on an orphanage beside it, killingalmost 40 children, and the other was nevercompleted but the building withstood all that andstill stands to tell us its story.

Many of us never visit Islamic Cairo and we havelittle knowledge of the great heritage we have. And although this mosque is highly recognizedall over the world, I never heard of it till I wasin college! If you can take some time out to visitplaces in your country that are sought by travelersfrom all over the world, then please do.

Do You RememberNovember 1989

Until its fall on November 9, 1989,the Berlin Wall had remained to theworld a relic of WWII; a key symbol, and a constant reminder of whatWestern powers regarded asCommunist tyranny, particularlyafter the high-profile shootings ofwould-be defectors. The Wall waserected in 1961 as a way to combatthe mass immigration of skilledlabor force from East Germany, then, controlled by the CommunistBloc, to the West, a shared territorybetween France, Britain and theUnited States, via Berlin, the onlypoint in the East/West Germanyborder where the border remainedopen. The drain of labor andeconomic output threatened EastGermany with economic collapse. This had ramifications for the wholeCommunist Bloc and particularlythe Soviet Union.

The Wall was over 155 km (96 miles)long. In June 1962 work started on asecond parallel fence up to 91 metres(100 yards) further in, with houses inbetween the fences torn down and theirinhabitants relocated. An empty no man'sland was created between the twobarriers, which became widely known asthe ‘death strip.’ It offered no cover; itwas mined and booby-trapped withtripwires; and, most importantly, it offereda clear field of fire to the watching guards. The ‘fourth generation wall’ knownofficially as ‘Stützwandelement UL 12.11,’was the final and most sophisticatedversion of the Wall, completed in 1975.During the Wall's existence there werearound 5,000 successful escapes intoWest Berlin; 192 people were killed tryingto cross and around 200 were seriouslyinjured. And after more than two decades, the world was slowly accepting the BerlinWall as an international fact of life.

Just when you were all toddlers, the Berlin wall was falling, and the world was on fire…

The best memory any of you would have of winter 1989 is, well, school; and a bit ofthumb-sucking too, probably. For some it was their first trip to the movies, it was theirfirst book, or perhaps, their first dose of solid food, after years of feeding off Gerber

jars. And while your biggest concerns were your monthly exams or deciding which toy tobuy next, the world, Europe in particular, had a lot more to worry about.

But this was all bound to change on August 23, 1989, as Hungary removedits border restrictions with Austria, leading to more than 13,000 East Germansescaping through Hungary, and mass demonstrations against the governmentin East Germany began in the fall of 1989. A newly appointed governmentdecided to allow East Berliners to apply for visas to travel to West Berlin. However, Günter Schabowski, the East German Minister of Propaganda hadbeen on vacation prior to this decision and hadn't been fully updated on allthe protesting and this particular decision.During a press conference on November 9, 1989, he was handed a note whichhe decided to read out loud and that turned out to be a huge mistake. The note said that East Berliners would be allowed to cross the border withproper permission. Tens of thousands of people immediately went to thecheckpoints in the Wall and demanded entry into West Berlin. They quicklybecame a major crowd control problem for the surprised and overwhelmedborder guards. In face of the escalating crowd safety situation, the guardseventually just yielded, opening the access points and allowing people throughwith (at most) minimal identity verification checks. The ecstatic East Berlinerswere soon greeted by jubilant West Berliners on the other side in a celebratory, party atmosphere. November 9 is thus considered the date the Wall fell. Inthe days and weeks that followed, people began arriving at the wall withsledgehammers and physically demolishing it, section by section. The fall ofthe wall was the first step to the unification of Germany, which was concludedon October 3, 1990.

November 1989News Headlines:The 27.9-mile-long Berlin Wall, the symbol of theCold War that separated East and West Germanyfor 28 years, was opened. Both East and WestGerman citizens celebrated their freedom as theyonce again were able to walk freely between thetwo states.

A Sad Moon in a Black Night

Something’s creepin’ upon meBut I can’t seeFear is screaming out of meStruggling to break freeMy world is spinningWhile my blood is spillingI’m losin’ controlWhile they’re taking my soul

I’m slipping awayFrom the pain inside of meVoices in my headWhen I’m lying in my bedThey just won’t go awayWhy do they stay?I’m going insaneI can’t take the pain

Fear and hatred is all I can seeWhile they’re suckin’ life out of meTorture is all I can feelAnd the wounds just won’t healThey’re taking it allI feel so smallAll they do is lieMy eyes can’t see the sky

I'm too quiet to be noticedI'm kind enough to be fooledI'm desperate enough to commit suicideI'm too free to be ruled

I see kids dying while people laughIt's like they're dying on their behalfI wonder where's justice when cruelty is everywhere? And the idea of living this which I don’t bareI'm always crying, wishing to dieWhen you're praying trying to get byAnd when that black cloud spreads over youYou say it's fake although you know it's trueJust wishing to live this another day

I don’t know why I want to run awayI'm glad and pleased to say "I'm gone!"When you're relieved to see that sunComing up with all its yellow beamsLike fired bullets I guess it seemsI wonder where I should goWhen time is passing yet so slowAnd if you ask me who I want to beI'll tell you this little one called meCause without love… or with loveLife was just great and fine with meAll my answers were up aboveNow death is one foot away from meSo why did I say I want to dieWhen all I needed was a little cry?

Although life's great and extremely goodAnd I should have lived it as I couldSo I’m going to live it all and I'm not to waste timeAnd you're going to hear me one more timeSinging the song of my lifeFeaturing me, myself and I

Sir!I know you’re a powerful speaker but can youlisten for a second only? I need only onemoment to have you listen to my silence talkingand my feelings which I fail to put in words.Try to read my thoughts, to listen to my heartbeats which say all I want to say.Try just to stare into my eyes and you’llunderstand me by your heart and feel my brokenfeelings. You know, there are a lot of livingthings which are killed by words. Everything isbetter if I don’t say it.

Sir!Listen to my silence which tells you all mysecrets which calls you by tears when you leave. It dances when it remembers a happy memoryand smiles when you’re back because silenceis a wonderful language to declare your love.Stop talking for a second and let’s listen to thesilence talking. One sense will stop and all theother senses will work. One language will stopand all the other languages will be.

Silence

Bruised and battered by yourwords…dazed and shattered now ithurts!Could you elaborate what do you thinkabout that?Sometimes it's fair enough that youdemand others’ point of view aboutwhat was said or what you’ve doneespecially when these words weresaid to someone in particular.Yes, I know it differs from one personto another about expressing what youthink about it. But it won't hurt youif you say your perspective about whatwas said; even if you’re shy or usedto acting cold as a way to face suchsituations.

For God's sake you’ve made me losewhat I've been always known for, ‘Themost reasonable and the solver ofmost problems concerningrelationships between girls and guys."And now I'm going insane with allthese thoughts and questions thatwere left unanswered and only Godknows if it’ll remain like this.

Why did you let me go so easily? Why didn’t you object or refuse what

I was suggesting? Why did you take my words forgranted? Why haven't you tried toget me back in your life? It’s been five months now - whyhaven't I let you go yet?!

Even though it was my decision toleave all what we could have done;like the future that we could haveshared together. And I'm still convinced of the so manyreasonable reasons that made meunable to continue with you.Yes, I'm better off now in one way oranother, but let me be frank...you stillgot something that makes me get ina daze and it's beyond being sane tothink that I was the one who choseall of that!

Maybe because I still see your thingsor maybe it's me who doesn’t wantto let go of what happened.I know nothing about you now or youabout me and I pray that you're notfacing what I've been through; I knowthat it was hard on you too!So please God, let me out of his headfor good as well as his life, and I hopethat he has the life he deserves, if it'snot now then when God wills.Simply because it’s been a difficultparadox to solve getting over you, even when it was me who decided to!

TPA’s Productive YouthCampaign is up and strong, reaching out to Egypt’syounger generations andpaving the way for theirsuccessful future. It’s nevertoo late to produce and it’snever too late to advance.Recently, we’ve had the honorto meet up with Mr. Loay ElShawaby, Product Managerand a founding member of the‘Nahdet el Mahroussa’Organization. Thisorganization is an NGO createda project (YIA – YoungInnovative Awards) to helpserve graduating universitystudents of the faculty ofEngineering with their finalyear projects. Read more ofthe following exclusiveinterview and find out how thisorganization can help you.

Can you brief us about the ‘Nahdetel Mahroussa’ Organization whichthe YIA project relates to?

The YIA project belongs to the ‘Nahdetel Mahroosa’ Organization which worksthrough three main channels; anincubator which helps support andimplement innovative project ideas;a discussion forum where differentideas and concerns about Egypt’spresent and future are vocalized anddebated, and finally a think tank(under development) whose primaryobjective is to study and make practicalrecommendations to the Egyptiancommunity at large in the area ofdevelopment. It is voluntary workfrom us. I am the Project Managerand a founding member of the ‘NahdetEl Mahroussa.’

What is the YIA project and howdo university graduates benefitfrom it?The YIA project aims at stimulatingthe culture of research anddevelopment in Egypt. It hopes torealize this objective by financiallysupporting innovative project ideas

developed by Egyptian college studentsof Egypt’s Technical Faculties. YIAoffered a number of L.E. 4000 grantawards for the best project ideassubmitted by applicants.

Why was the faculty ofEngineering especially chosen forthis project?

There are a lot of organizations herein Egypt. We realize that whatever wedo as an NGO is a limited intervention, but is highly needed. So we had toget specific with our project which isa sub-effort of what NM does. Wewanted to make a difference by helpingresearch and development here inEgypt. So we chose the final year atEgypt’s technical colleges in whichthey already do their graduationprojects. We chose the TelecomDepartment in the Faculty ofEngineering because it is a sciencevery needed nowadays and in thefuture. As we had very limitedresources and funding, we started inone place, which was Cairo University, but now we have expanded to Ein-Shams and Alexandria Universities aswell with still a further-expansion plan.

Your aim from this project is toincrease R&D here in Egypt, butwhat guarantees those studentsthat their projects will be usedwith their names and will not bestolen ( i.e. their intellectualproperty rights)?

We do not buy these projects, we justfinance them meaning they are nottransformed by us into real businesses. We had eight awards last year and wedistributed six of them which benefited30 students. Currently, two of thebeneficiary projects are trying to starta real business now and we havealready helped by providing them withlinks to do that. The idea behind thisis to give students a chance to lookat the optimistic side of life instead ofbeing pessimistic. If you compete andwin a prize at the end, that will giveyou a very good push, which is ourprinciple. The aim behind this is abetter society, where by research youcan achieve the know-how of things.

How are graduates chosen tocompete and how are the winnerschosen?

There is an online-submission form,so any student team who fits thecriteria can participate. We give themlectures about how to make proposalsfor their projects to all the studentswho submitted. Then we make acommittee to choose the projects. Weorganize another three lectures forthe chosen students; one about therole of R&D in stimulating the economicgrowth, another about how to convertyour project to a commercial one andthe person who gives this lecture is avery successful 30-year-old Egyptianentrepreneur. He acts as a role modelfor them which gives them hope. Thelast one is about the chances of R&Dafter graduation and it is held by

Amideast.

Where do you get the funds fromfor this project?

At the beginning, most of the prizeswere from individual/family pledges. But this year we created corporatepartnerships with companies likeProctor and Gamble- Egypt, which isalready in action, committing 12awards this year and it will serve upto 60 students and will be used tosponsor five graduation projects inthree national Engineering Schools,at the Mechanical EngineeringDepartment, in addition to two othercompanies but they are not yet inaction.

Does P&G financing these projectsmean they will provide thesestudents with job opportunitieslater?

‘Nahdet el Mahroosa’ YIA projectfocuses on R&D. Proctor and Gambleconversely focuses on both R&D andrecruitment. Here comes the problemof applying these projects in realbusiness where if you did not evenwork for them later, it is a good thingon your C.V. that P&G actually housedyou for your graduation project andattempted to apply your valuablerecommendations. They would alsotry to provide Egyptian youth withopportunities at their R&D facilitiesabroad.

What is the deadline for this year’sadmission?

The deadline is November 25, 2005.We printed posters and posted themwherever we could in the faculty whichhas all information needed.

What does the future hold for theorganization and for seniorstudents who wish to getinvolved?

‘Nahdet el Mahroosa’ is planning tocreate an NM R&D fund with assistancefrom partner-organizations, and willstart promoting the fund in December2005. The size of the fund is projectedat L.E. 10 million and is expected tosupport 200 awards annually, and torun other complemantary programs.

By providing the YIA, ‘Nahdet elMahroussa’ can teach those who striveenough to win their award, the realmeaning of how to enter the workforce before they even land a job.Through this NGO, graduates can gettheir first close-up view of what it islike to be part of the working market.

Like the bright orange Dodge Charger that is its heroes’pride and joy, the Dukes Of Hazzard spend an awful lotof time tearing around in no particular direction. Basedon the cheesy ‘80s TV series, about a close knit clan ofhillbilly moonshiners, Jay Chandrasekhar’s film seemsto take pride in being as loud, obnoxious and morooonicas humanly possible.

Gainey) and thecrooked business dealings of the countryCommissioner Boss Hogg (Burt Reynolds). This Warner Bros Pictures film is writtenby John O’ Brien and directed by JayChandrasekhar.

always count on: knocking-you-on-your-butt moonshineand Bo Luke behind the wheel of his beloved orangecharger. For Seann William Scott, playing the role of Botook him back to his childhood days in Minnesota, andhe said, “I was a big fan of The Dukes of Hazzard as akid and I thought it would be fun to be apart of the film.”

Knoxville says about the Dukes that, “They’re just recklessas all hell. Mean as snakes, but in a good way and theyare respectable to women.” “Seann is such a wild forceof energy and Johnny is a funny ex-stunt man who is agood actor. They were the perfect combination of beinga little crazy with a hint of Southern rebellion,” saysChandrasekhar.Their cousin Daisy’ s secret weapon is a very special pairof shorts. Played by Catherine Bach in the original series, the filmmakers cast popular artist Jessica Simpson asDaisy Duke, a true Southern girl who is tough as she issexy. Simpson not only lent her acting talents to the film, but her considerable musical talents as well- on thefilm’s soundtrack, she duets with Willie Nelson in a funkyremake of Nancy Sinatra’s classic 1966 hit single TheseBoots are Made for Walkin’.

In the film, Uncle Jesse is thrown in jail by his longtimenemesis, Boss Hogg, who’s trying to steal the Duke family

farm in usualunderhandedstyle. While thefilmmakersbrought back allof the iconiccharacters fromthe original series, they also added afew new faces tomix. One suchnewcomer isPauline, abeautiful woman

who’s the picture of county charm and the object of UncleJesse’ s affection. When the Dukes’ farm is taken away,Pauline helps them carry out their plan to defeat BossHogg and save Hazzard County from being strip-mined.

The Dukes Of Hazzard is a light, comic film, full of funnysituations which are extremely adorable. Honestly, I,myself am waiting for it to open here in Egypt to runand get a front row ticket. You’ll find me there… _

This movie made a bang in its nativeRussia when it was released in July2004 shattering all previous box officehits like Spider-Man 2 and the lastpart of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. This stylish horror fantasy film wasmade for a budget of $4.2 millionsand the Box Office returns were $16millions in Russia alone. The success of this movie made FoxSearchlights acquire the rights forinternational distribution for it and itssequel. The third part will be madein English by the original producerswith Fox.

The Origin.....The Trilogy:For any success there must be a start. The start came with the trainedpsychiatrist Sergei Lukyanenko whohas written other books including thetrilogy Line of Reveries and Knightsof the Forty Islands. The prolific authorwanted to write an epic tale whichmixes ancient magic with modern life. The trilogy which consists of NightWatch, Day Watch and the DuskWatch marks a big change in Russianliterature. The story shows that supernaturalothers like witches, vampires andwarlocks are living hidden among usand they conceal the other-worldbattle that upholds 1000-year-oldtruce between the forces of Light andthe forces of Darkness. The Dark others are the Day Watch, dodgy people in bad trainers. TheLight others are the night watch whoare Electric company workers and

bums. There is a need forspecial police forcesto keep a delicatebalance betweenGood and Evil, sothe Night Watch andDay Watch wereformed. All theforces are waitingfor a "Great Other"whom will end thewar between Lightand Dark as theancient prophecyforetold. The novelasks a question about which side willthis great Other take? The idea of supernatural forces, thatare operating just one step away fromthe normal urban reality of rundownapartments and crowded subways, captivated the readers throughoutthe Russian nation.

The Movie:For a story like this, a new versionwas needed a new vision for cinematicproduction and also a creative director.Wanted was someone who couldmaster the modern special-effects offilmmaking while also understandingof the Russian soul. Then he came totheir minds, Timur Bekmambetov, who was called by his fellow Russiandirector Nikita Mikhalkov as ourTarantino. “Timur is highly visual,

says producer Anatoly Maximov, andhe also goes very deep with thecharacters, in a Stanislavski way. It’sfrom this combination that the film’sstyle was born.”This movie is the chance for them tochange the Russian cinema as Ernstexplained to Bekmambetov.Bekmambetov thought that to makeoriginal entertainment, he must meshall his influences of Hollywood actionmasters and add some Russian soulin it. He peppered the film not onlywith wild chases, hair-raising stunts, powerful explosions and other-worldlycreature effects but also with thatparticular mix of sly humor, richphilosophy and human insight thathas always marked Russian literature.

The main aim of this novel is to showthe fragile balance between good andevil in our modern world.

The director of this movie used intenserealism and pervasive and inventiveeffects to make his unique creativevision for the movie since not onlydid he want it to be hair-raisingbecause of the menacing creatures, but he also wanted it to be as realas a person next door. The cast of this movie includeKonstantin Khabensky, VladimirMenshov, Valery Zolotukhin, MariaPoroshina, Galina Tunina, VictorVerzhbitsky and Dima Martynov.

All the elements above made themovie a big hit and all these elementsshould encourage us to run to cinemasto watch this movie when it opens inEgypt and also wait for its two sequels.

Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) gladly escapesa summer of disturbing dreams aboutLord Voldemort and searing pain fromhis scar, to attend the Quidditch WorldCup with his friends Ron Weasley(Rupert Grint) and Hermione Granger(Emma Watson). But summer has toend soon and they head to Hogwartsto witness an eventful year of hazardoustournaments, fall out between friends, teenage romance and jealousy.

The Triwizard TournamentThis year, Hogwarts decides to host TheTriwizard Tournament one of the mostlegendary and most dangerous of thewizarding community’s magicalcompetitions. So dangerous, it hasn’tbeen held for over a 100 years. It wasestablished to create friendly tiesbetween young witches and wizardsfrom different nationalities. And for thefirst time ever we’re introduced to twoschools besides Hogwarts. BeauxbatonsAcademy of Magic is a French girl’sschool led by the half giant MadameMaxime. And Durmstrang Institute isa Bulgarian boy’s school with IgorKarkaroff as their mysteriousheadmaster. Only one student isselected from each of the three schoolsby the enchanted Goblet of Fire. Theselected champions are obliged to beover the age of 17 to enter, and becauseof that, 14-year-old Harry and hisfriends are excluded. Eternal gloryawaits the winner from the threechampions. They’re to compete ingrueling tasks and vigorous challengesto win the coveted Tri-Wizard Cup.

Meet the Champions*Viktor Krum, who is played by newcomer Stanislav Ianevski, is the firstchampion selected by the Goblet of Fire

to represent Durmstrang. He’s aBulgarian Qudditch superstar and thebest Qudditch seeker in the eyes ofmillions of fans and worshippers, including Ron Weasley. Much to hisdisappointment, Viktor shows quite aninterest in Hermione Granger.

*The charming Fleur Delacour is chosennext to represent Beauxbatons. Playedby French actress Clémence Poésy,she’s part Veela, who are womenknown for their immense beauty, longflowing hair and the strange attractionmen feel towards them. Thus, sheseems to cast a spell over the entireboys at school. Fleur, like all theBeauxbaton girls, is elegent and chic.Yet determined, strong and fearless.

*And the third champion selected torepresent Hogwarts is none other thanthe popular and handsome Hufflepuffstudent, Cedric Diggory. Cedric, whois played by Robert Pattinson, is a modelstudent. He’s the captain of theHufflepuff Quidditch team and a Prefect. He’s considered a fine example of theHogwarts champion.

But that wasn’t the last champion tobe chosen by the enchanted Goblet. After the excitement and festivity ofother Hogwarts students over theselection of Cedric, the Gobletunexpectidly selects another champion,Harry Potter. Being underage, hecouldn’t have nor did he put his namein the Goblet. And stunned as well asthe whole school, Harry has to face thedeadly tasks of being the fourthchampion. Because once the Goblethas chosen a name, there’s no turningback.

New additions to the cast includeBrendon Gleeson, (Gangs of Newyork,Troy) filling the role of the new andeccentric Defense Againt the Dark Artsteacher Mad-Eye Moody who’s keepinga close watch on Harry during thetournament to ensure his safety. AndMiranda Rishardson, (Sleepy Hollow)playing the role of the wacky journalistRita Skeeter, who will stop at nothingand stoop to anything for heroutrageous gossip columns.British Director Mike Newell (FourWeddings and a Funeral, Donnie Brasco)fills the director’s chair in this sequel, and decided to continue with the moreedgy and dark twist that DirectorAlfonso Cauron added to the previousfilm Harry Potter & the Prisoner ofAzkaban. Newell amazes us with thevisual effects that were used to createone of the biggest challenges of all inthis production; the three tasks. Forthe dragon sequence in the first task, the visual and special effects teamcreated a practical dragon - a 40-foot-long ‘animatronic’ beast equipped witha fully operational flamethrower. Inother words, the dragon breathes realflames! For the second task the

champions were required to locatetheir loved ones in the Black Lake. The actors took scuba divingtraining while the filmmakers builtthe biggest water tank measuring20 feet deep to fit the whole crewand stuntmen as they were filmingthis underwater universe. The thirdand final task required thechampions to navigate a densemaze formed by tall, thick hedgesand shadowy pathways chokedwith mist. But that’s not all on Harry’s plate, his biggest challenge of all is tofind a date to the Yule Ball andhe has his eyes set on the prettyRavenclaw student, Cho Chang

(Katie Leung). Newell suceeds inportraying the perils of being a teenagerthat no magic can fix. Will Harry succeed in winning Cho’sheart? Or will he win the tournamentthat he didn’t even enter on his ownwill at a time when Lord Voldemort isbound to rise again to full power? You’llhave to wait and see in this thrillingsequel of the Harry Potter series.

Hollywood produces noless than 200 movies ayear but the problem isthat most of them areeither sequels, remakes,or adaptations of books, autobiographies, comicbooks or video games.Less than one percentof these films comefrom original ideas orconcepts. That’s why weshould be thankful thatthere are some directorswho are still blessedwith originality andgenuineness in a worldwhere the concept ofconsumerism and lackof creativity areprevalent. One of these directors is CameronCrowe, the man who gave us classicslike Jerry Maguire, Say Anything andAlmost Famous. Of course, he alsogave us Vanilla Sky but that doesn’tcount as it is a loose remake of theSpanish film Abre los Ojos. Yet thething that separates Cameron Crowefrom other directors is his knack tomake films that are characterized asdeeply felt human dramas with

effortless overtones of wistful comedyand a strong connection to modernAmerican music. And what helps fuelthe originality of his films is the factthat most of his films are based onhis personal experiences. Before westart, let’s just make one point clear;his personal experiences have neverbeen published nor told to othermediums as books, interviews, etc…which is what makes his films whollyoriginal; the fact is his films are semi-autobiographies with some tinges offictional romance or exaggeratedcomic situations here and there, andwe get to experience them firsthandthrough watching his films.

Anyway, this year Crowe returns tofamiliar grounds with his sixth filmElizabethtown, a film which manywould say is his most personal filmto date as it chronicles his ownexperiences sixteen years ago when

he attended his own father’s funeralin his hometown, Elizabethtown,Kentucky from which he wasestranged for a long time. The floodof emotion that overtook Crowe wasso tremendous that he had to makea movie about it. The film stars risingactors, Orlando Bloom and KirstenDunst along with Susan Sarandon,Alec Baldwin and Jessica Biel. Thefilm is produced by long-time friends,Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner (whoown a production company calledCruise/Wagner and has helpedproducing every single Tom Cruisefilm since 1993, along with othernotable films such as, The Others andShattered Glass.) Composing theinspirational music for Elizabethtownis Crowe’s wife and longtimecomposer, Nancy Wilson.

So what’s the film about? It’s abouta guy named Drew Baylor (OrlandoBloom) whose life comes crashingdown in a single day, when he getsfired from his sports shoe companyfor his overwhelming failure in hisdesign of sneakers plus losing hisemployer’s millions of dollars as aresult of the fiasco. To make mattersworse, he gets a phone callannouncing that his father has died.Yet, rather than driving him furtheron the brink of despair, his father’spassing brings him back from thebrink of suicide, giving him a newpurpose in life and kick-starting a newromance with an air stewardess, Claire(Kirsten Dunst), whom he met on theflight home and learns the possibilitiesof his destiny from her. This is one ofthose films that’ll make you cry andlaugh at the same time, so get yourhankies ready cause you’re in for alife-affirming, comic film that takeson matters of life and death in asurprising and heartfelt way.Read on to find out more about thestars of this great film…

Meet the Residents:Orlando BloomSeriously, you already know the guy! Is there any reason why we shouldbe writing about him? You probably know by now everything there is toknow about this British heartthrob, and we even wrote about him tons oftimes in the magazine (check the Star Corner published in January 2004,among other previews.) Since he debuted in The Lord of the Rings trilogyas the gallant elf, Legolas, and the world hasn’t been the same ever since.Fans cheered, girls wooed, and his distinguished face was plastered overevery film and teen magazine imaginable. All of the sudden, he was the ‘it’boy… or in other words; the guy most Hollywood producers would die tocast in their films to attract teenagers. All the roles that followed for ourdear Orly were period-pieces in which he was required either to wear funnycostumes or sport ridiculous wigs – Pirates of the Caribbean, Troy andKingdom of Heaven. Elizabethtown marks as Orlando’s first time to act ina feature film in which he’d have to prove his acting mettle without anyridiculous get-ups, as well as his first time to act in a film that doesn’t takeplace in medieval or historical times. Drew plays everyman Drew Baylor, aman who is constantly befuddled by the complexities and problems ofeveryday life. About his character, Bloom remarked that this film was theeasiest film he had ever done in terms of character development, as suchemotions are prevalent in everyday life.“I remember thinking, ‘Wow, we’re making a really special, heartfelt storythat I think a lot of people will be able to relate to,’” says Bloom. “Whenyou’re sitting in the theater and you see somebody coming to terms withlife and death, success and failure,” – which is everything that Drew does– “it feels freeing, because you realize that these emotions escape no one.”Incidentally, this is the second collaboration between Bloom and Crowe.Crowe directed a 30-second ‘Gap’ ad with Bloom and Kate Beckinsale, inwhich Crowe was impressed by the young actor and asked him to work withhim again in the future. Bloom drew his performance as Drew from watchingfilms starring the late Jack Lemmon such as, The Apartment. As a result of the multiple viewings, Crowe relates, “Orlando can do a meanJack Lemmon imitation. But most importantly, he has what the great actorshave: heart and soul and humor and the vulnerability to put it all out there.”Of course, the biggest challenge Bloom had to take for this role was losinghis trademark British accent, unlike previous roles where he was challengedto ride horses or learn archery. The end result was a role that would surelybe labeled as Bloom’s best performance to date. What’s next for Orly? Thelong awaited sequels (yes, there’s more than one!) for Pirates of the Caribbeanin which he reprises his role as Will Turner as well as a film called, Love andOther Disasters. Expect to hear a lot more about Orlando (and me to writeless articles about him, I hope!) in the near future.

It was just really easy for meto just slide into these words.” She was drawn to Claire’sconstant life perspective: “She’s not self-deprecating atall; in fact, she’s very positive all the time. She’s reallyjust there to help the other person – I can relate to that.”Having a real air stewardess for a mom helped as well,as she drew her inspiration for the role from her mother.“It’s in my blood,” the actress jokes. “Kirsten’s portrayalof Claire in Elizabethtown is flawless and honest,” saysproducer Paula Wagner. “Besides being a consummateprofessional, she is truly a naturally gifted actress whodedicates herself to finding the unmistakable truth thatbrings her characters to life. In Claire, she creates aunique individual – although we have not met her before,we feel as though we have known her for years. As Clairesays, ‘I’m impossible to forget but, I’m hard to remember.’”It’s pretty obvious if you’ve seen the trailer of the filmthat Kirsten’s wit and charisma makes her a sight for soreeyes, and her radiant smile always manages to makeeven the most depressed person sigh with relief. So whereis she now? Reuniting with her Virgin Suicides director,Sofia Coppola, for Marie-Antoinette, in which Kirsten playsthe titled queen of France. thought to what circumstances theyhave gone through for them tobecome ‘street children?’ Or whatthey go through each day strivingto take care of themselves? All will agree that the primary

reason is poverty. That is part ofthe reason but not all. Thesechildren do not have their completerights. Education for instance, isa fundamental right and most ofthem do not get a chance tocomplete their school years like anyother ordinary child. In some cases, the parents are those who end thisright and take their children out ofschool. They usually do notcontinue after fifth grade. It iseither because of their parents’incapability of paying school feesas so many families tend to be largein number. They would prefer totake care of them without sendingthem to school. Or it is becausethey want them to help in raisingthe family income. Poor familiesare more likely to send their childrento work at an early age. Someparents want their children to leadthe same life as theirs even if thatmeans forcing them out of schoolto work. Children of course do nothave a say in this. They yearn tocontinue their education and live anormal childhood but sometimes itis not possible. So, they arecompelled to get a job and lead alife as an adult, forgetting the realnumber of years they spent in thisworld being just a child. In othercases, most of these children realizethe benefit of working. They preferlabor over learning, as they believethat school will do them no goodbecause it is hard, while workingwill make them earn money to buywhat they need. That is why theyresort to working in order to helptheir family improve their life.

The lives of the children who dropout of school are not spick andspan. They do not just stay at homeand live a happy and healthy lifewith their loving family. One of themain reasons that drive them tothe streets is child abuse. They arewitnesses to a great deal of familyviolence at such a young age tobear, mainly because of family re-marriages. Imagine a child beingbeaten up by his step-father andhis mother cannot do anythingabout it. Who will he turn to? Likeevery child, violence makes himrun away and lead his own life inthe streets of Egypt, never to returnto his family. In the case of siblings

who are separated during thisrunaway process, there might bea good chance they do not see eachother again. “Each one isresponsible for him/herself” assome of them put it.

Escapingviolence or ill-treatment isalso the causeof runawayorphans whoseek a life of“greaterfreedom”.Runaways orworking children

may think that they have the abilityto provide for themselves. Thisencourages them to risk leaving afamily environment or anorphanage that they considerunsatisfactory and head off fromdifferent towns to the capitalbelieving that it will fulfill theirdreams.Whether with their family or not, they are forced to work at a youngage. It increases the amount oftime they spend unsupervised, especially when achild’s workplace is thestreet. They reachsuch a disturbedemotional state thatthey may throw theirlives away.

I am sure reading allthis brings some misery into yourhearts. Recognizing how manychildren in this world are beingmistreated, labored, abused or evenlost wandering the streets alone, touches us all deep within, causingnothing but internal silent tears. You know why silent tears? Becausewe all tend to ignore some problemswhen they first seem hard to handleor solutions appear to be far away. When we were discussing thisarticle, we decided to take a pauseand think of some solutions.Surprisingly we came out with quitea few.We, yet, cannot claim that they arefully developed solutions but wehope this would be an initiative stepon a road that is not as long as weall might think.

An idea came up of building agovernmental organization. Thisorganization's job would be toaccept applications from those whowant their children to have a decenteducation but cannot afford it, andprovide them with all educationalsupplies; not only school fees, butalso uniforms, stationeries and asmall allowance for the kid toencourage him about school. The second idea, which is myfavorite, is constructing specialschools for those who droppedschool or cannot seem to succeedin this kind of education. Theseschools will give them generalinformation and teach them several

crafts till they masterthem and then addthem to schools’workshops to startmanufacturing different productsmade by those children. Whenthese products are sold, childrenget paid; they can help their familiesor use the money to openworkshops building their owncareers and the rest of the moneygoes to schools to have the abilityto help more kids.

We were also astonished when weheard of an educational systemapplied in Upper-Egypt since 1992.It is a co-operation between theEgyptian Ministry of Education andUNICEF(United Nations InternationalChildren’s Emergency Fund.) Thewhole system is based upon theidea of self study; there are noteachers; just an observer who isthere to organize classes and guidethe students. This systemencourages students to attendconferences and participate in allkinds of activities. Studying in this

school is totally free of charge.Students are chosen according toage. There are more chances forstudents who are over age. Thenumber of kids in this school ismuch smaller than any other school,to make it easier to observe childrenclosely.

Laughing, running, playing, andlearning… this is how all childrenshould be. Unfortunately, a largenumbers of kids never heard ofsuch things. Children of today aremen of tomorrow – push them toohard and your next generation ismindless, gutless and weary.

This is one nightmare I had longago. I got up screaming, but luckilyI had my mother there when I wokeup. Parents always pop out of nowhere when there is trouble. Theyalways provide what is missing. Ithurts to think that there are childrenout there missing out on this. Theywork, they beg or they are homelesswithout any parents at all; withoutsomeone to look after them. Insteadof having an environment that helpsthem grow to reach their potential, they have one that leaves themdevastated with a deformed dream;no hopes for a better future andnobody to be there when theyscream.

ChildLabor:The International Labor Organization(ILO) estimated that 250 millionchildren between the ages of fiveand fourteen are working indeveloping countries; at least 120million of them full time. Around 61percent of these were in Asia, 32

percent in Africa, and 7 percent inLatin America. Most children in ruralareas were found to be working inagriculture; urban children workedin trade and services, with fewer inmanufacturing, construction anddomestic service. Only an estimated5 percent of child laborers workedin export industries. That means weare not the only country facing thisproblem but we have to work onfixing it.We have huge economical problemsthat need attention, so we have toface the fact that we cannot get ridof child labor in the next few yearsbut if children have to work we mustensure for them a better life.

It is very common in foreign countiresthat some children and teeangerswork because they consider this asa sort of positive contribution to theirdevelopment into becomingresponsible adults. But This dependslargely on the age of the child, theconditions in which the child worksand whether work prevents the childfrom going to school. Of course inthrid world countires like Egypt it isa whole differetnt case.

Removing children from theworkforce is not a practical solutionat all as discharging children fromwork without appropriate adjustmentprograms for both rehabilitation andeducation, and direct assistance willlead them only to the streets, gettingthem entangled in a variety ofcrimes, or working in even worseconditions and for a lesser wage.

StreetChildren:Evidently, millions of street childrenswarm the cities of Egypt. We tendto see them everyday. We givemoney to some of them whilescatteringaway theothers. But haveyou everstoppedfor asecondandgiven

Hands of the Future:We were together shopping. My small hand was happily buried in the dry warmthof hers. She always had this firm grip. Suddenly, something forcibly took heraway from me. I tried to hold onto her hands, yet the grip went loose. And lostin the dimness, she couldn't hear my calls and screams. She was gone, leavingme searching for a familiar face among the crowd with a blend of insecurity andgrief for my loss seething within me. I lost home, for mother was home.

thought to what circumstances theyhave gone through for them tobecome ‘street children?’ Or whatthey go through each day strivingto take care of themselves?

We were also astonished when weheard of an educational systemapplied in Upper-Egypt since 1992.It is a co-operation between theEgyptian Ministry of Education andUNICEF(United Nations InternationalChildren’s Emergency Fund.) This is standard globalization! In management they have aprecise definition for it: Worldwideinterdependence of resources, products, markets, and businesscompetition. Globalization withits three aspects - economic, political, and social - removes the

barriers between countries, making the world smallerand more connected as people like to call it, the Global

Village. You can see America keen on keepingstability in the Gulf countries and democracy in

the Middle East. You find countries concernedwith what is happening at the other end ofthe world because it is all common interestnow. With globalization come lots of definitionslike, collective security and global publicopinion. The relation between technologyand globalization cannot be neglected asthey affect each other mutually.

Indian National Congress movement.Gandhi was imprisoned in 1922, 1930, 1933, and in1942. While in prison, he went on hunger strikes. Hisfame was such that his death in prison would makeinternational headlines and greatly embarrass the Britishat a time when Britain was condemning dictators inEurope. When in India, Gandhi took on the British where possible. His famous walk to the sea to produce salt was typicalof his actions. Britain had a monopoly on salt productionin India and Gandhi saw this as wrong. Hence his decisionwas to produce salt by the sea.He realized that the religious issues of India were toodeep for any remedy to work. Hence, he collaboratedwith Mountbatten and Wavell in the build up toindependence in 1947. This association with the break-up of India was to cost him his life. There had been oneassassination attempt on Gandhi on January 20th 1948- it had failed. Just ten days later on, the 30th of January,he was assassinated by a Hindu fanatic who could notforgive Gandhi for his belief that Muslims had equal valueto Hindus and no one was better than anybody else.

Politics hasacquired overthe years thereputation ofbeing a dulltopic, onlydealing withwars andtragedies.Well, believe itor not, thisnotion iscompletelyuntrue!‘Politic’ is an adjectivewhich is defined as acareful person, a personwho is not rash orreckless; In other words,a person who knows whatto think and how to think.Politics is involved withyour everyday life. Howyou perceive andapproach others isconsidered politics. Politicsis a mental sport whichsignificantly enhancesyour mental health. Nomatter what your studyis or what you do in yourlife, political knowledgewould be of a great helpto you. It will give youinformation about thingsthat happened in the past, things that are happeningaround you in the presentand even theoriespredicting the future. Itgives enough backgroundthat will refine your wayof thinking.Get out of your bubble.Open your eyes to seewhat is happening aroundyou. Ignoring what isgoing on around you inthe world will not make itbetter but maybe dealingwith it will.

The FourVersions ofEgyptWhen you read a publicnewspaper like the Al

Ahram, for example, youfind an optimistic Egypt.National growth rate isincreasing, thousands ofnew job opportunities areoffered, we are headingtowards economic andpolitical reform and thatwe are on the right track. However, when you readthe oppositionnewspapers you will findthe other side of the coin.Egypt where everythingis awful, the country’seconomic activity isslowing down, thegovernment can not doits job, corruption iseverywhere, we are notgetting anywhere, and nosolutions are beingoffered. Then take a taxi, andhave a little chat with thedriver about the country. He will startcomplainingthat there isno moneyin Egypt, all themoneyis beingstolen, and thepoorarebeingtreatedassecond orthird ratecitizens;police treatthem as if they arecriminals till the oppositeis proven. Also no jobopportunities are offeredanymore and it is so hardto get your basic needs. Then take a look at Egyptfrom your own side, andcompare it to the threeversions you just heard. Why is there a hugedifference between thefour of them?

First: Publicnewspapers are thechannels through whichthe government can sendits messages indirectly tothe people. They try toshow us that everythingis fine; they are doingtheir best, and that is whywe should trust them, love them and re-electthem for the rest of theirlives. That is why they try

to show us that Egypt isworking to its maximumcapability and we areheading towards being adeveloped country.

Second: So inreturn, the oppositionparties feel they are beingswept away from theirlocations, can not exercisetheir political rights, theirvoice can not be heard, and there is no realnational dialogue. Theytry to influence publicopinion that thegovernment should bechanged, focus on thenegative side ofeverything, praising theirleaders and opposing thecurrent government forthe sake of ‘opposition’only.

Third: While theEgyptiancitizenfaces ahuge

problemwhich is

lack ofpolitical

awareness -Political

Socialization. Due tothe recession we live in,and the 30 years tryingto get out of the neck ofthe bottle, so to speak, and hearing lots from thegovernment withoutseeing any real outcomethat really affects ourlives, they tend to developtheir own theory of ‘theothers’ which is believingthat everything happeningis because of ‘Them.’‘Them’ can be thegovernment when itcomes to any probleminside the country, theycan be the West or canbe Israel. It is as ifeverybody is thinking andmaking plans on how torob us and hurt us; as ifthe whole world is onlyconcerned with us.

Fourth: In our

own vision of Egypt, eveneach one of us is takingthe wrong measureswhen trying to evaluatethe country and thegovernment’sperformance. We havelack of knowledge andreceive information andstatistics from singlesources, newspapers andTV, which develop acomplicated falseevaluation of the country.

If you want to see the realEgypt, log onto theInternet and search siteslike these:worldfactbook.comnews.bbc.comAlso you can view IMF andWorld Bank web sites, orread Egypt’s CountryProfile. You will findstatistics and numbersthat show the real stateof the country. But how can we solve thiscontroversial image of ourcountry and how can webuild a strong publicopinion that knows howto say words other thanYES?! A public opinionthat can reject, demonstrate peacefullyand cooperate with thegovernment in developingthe country, without theold theories of mistrustand the others? The answer lies in onestatement, that changecomes from the inside, aswe always say. God statedin the Holy Qu’ran, “Godwill not change the statusof people unless theychange from theirinside…”Many peaceful leaders, including Ghandi knewthis wisdom and advisedus by simply saying, “Bethe change you wish tosee in the world.”

For many years students of The International School ofChoueifat-Cairo wanted to help make a difference in thesociety surrounding it. After studying and researching thesituation, they (students and staff) found the best waywas to raise money for charity. However, the problem washow to raise money within the small community of aschool.

This is where the idea of theOpen Day comes into play. Onthis day we invite parents, familyand friends to come to the schoolcampus and enjoy a day withthe students and staff. Parentsand family members get a touraround the school campus andhave the opportunity to buybaked goods brought bystudents and staff. There isusually a used book and usedtoy sale and all proceeds go tocharity, mainly orphanagesaround Cairo and The CancerResearch Hospital 57357.By participating in an Open Day,we found out that our help canmake a difference in the societyand it doesn't have to be with simply handing over money, but it can be made fun by our efforts and simple bakedgoods with a few used toys and books thrown in.

Our Future Plans: One of the ways we would like to helpin the future, to make a difference in the lives of others,is by having a field day for orphans, by bringing them toThe International School of Choueifat-Cairo and arrangegames and a BBQ lunch for them. Students would helpin all aspects of this fun event.

The International School ofChoueifat - City of 6 Octoberthrough the Student LifeOrganization(tm) has been veryinvolved in fundraising forcharity over the past year. The entire 2004-2005 schoolyear was dedicated to raisingmoney for the building of theNew Children's Cancer Hospitalin Egypt. Fundraising eventswere held throughout the schoolyear with the culminating activitybeing an Open House. The OpenHouse was held in May of 2005and involved all staff andstudents of ISC-City of 6 Octoberas well as many members ofour extended school community.

Many outside activities were brought in to the school suchas a climbing wall, and the main stage hosted a numberof special events from a clown to a magician to a dogshow. In and around the gymnasium teachers wereinvolved in hosting their own fun activities such as a fishpond and the 'free throw shooting' competition. All in allit was a very successful day and year of fundraising withthe final total raised for the New children's Cancer Hospitalexceeding LE 60 000.

The 2005-2006 school year saw us begin with a fundraising

campaign to help the staff and students of our SisterSABIS(r) School in New Orleans recover from the tragediesthey have faced from Hurricane Katrina. We kicked offour fundraising with a 'helping hands' campaign. Students, staff, parents, and community members were encouragedto purchase a 'hand'. They then wrote their name on thehand and all the hands were displayed in the administrationbuilding to indicate who is lending a helping hand to ourfriends and colleagues in New Orleans. In addition to thisstudents have been having lollipop sales as well as collectingdonations to help with this project.

Currently students are in the middle of a Ramadan toydrive to gather toys to distribute to children in localorphanages at an Iftar meal during the Cairo Sheraton's"Put a Smile on a Child's Face" Campaign which some ofus (students and a few teachers) will attend. The eventwill run throughout Ramadan, we're going on the 19thOctober, and we are really looking forward to have funtogether with the children from the Orphanage.

Once again, it is a tribute to all of us: students, staff, parents and community members of The InternationalSchool of Choueifat-City of 6 October for opening theirhearts and helping those that are less fortunate throughtheir incredible generosity and kind spirit.

Sales, sales and more sales! Book sales, bake sales, lollipop sales. We have had them all. The start of bakesales at Choueifat-Cairo dates to many years ago. Westudents just love the idea, not only of baking goodiesand selling them, but also of buying delicious homemadecakes, cookies, brownies etc... And who does not ?! Sowhen it comes to fund-raising for charity money, wealways ask prefects to hold bake sales and the success

that comes out of it is really all dueto the student's enthusiasm (andpassion for food!!).Lollipop sales were a big blast atour school recently. We askedstudents to bring in lollipops andstudents would go around the schoolselling them. It turned out that notonly students, but teachers toorushed to buy themselves a lollipop. We will definitely continue havingthese kinds of sales for they haveproven to be a "Choueifat-Cairofavorite" according to our students. If you are in Choueifat-Cairo, thenyou would definitely know where toput your books after you have readthem. We frequently submit thebooks we have read and do not wantanymore to be sold in a used book

sale. We usually have those on Saturdays when we haveOpen Days. That way parents can by used books, aswell as new books.

The reason we came up with all of these sales in thefirst place is because we wanted to collect money forcharity in different and fun ways. Since we are alwaysgiving money to charity, then we may soon be comingup with even more ideas for different kinds of sales, allin Choueifat-Cairo.
