HOW HAS HOSA BENEFITTED YOU?I have seen firsthand how leadership and engagement impacts our community. The experiences afforded to me through SLC, WLA, and ILC broadened my worldview and shaped my perspective on healthcare in a way that no other experience has. Working with various organizations and health professionals through the years has solidified my love for the healthcare field and given me a head-start on my career path. I have also forged a network of peers that share my passion and that support me in every endeavor. HOSA has given me the skills to become a leader, an advocate, a friend, and most importantly, a health professional.

TALKING WITH THE PATIENT - NOT TO THE PATIENTIn EMS, we start training by learning all of the anatomy and “technical” things we need to know in order to treat our patient. How do we train our folks to “talk” with our patient? Do we do any communication skills? Many don’t. We all assume we all have the “gift of gab”. Communications is paramount if you are going to succeed in EMS and, unfortunately, many of us don’t have a clue on how we accomplish this simple task. This lecture will discuss communication in patient care, showing new techniques and reviewing many that may have been forgotten. Talking to the family after a death will be discussed and a new techniques will be presented that will help everyone to process information during those difficult discussions

QPR stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer — these 3 simple but powerful steps anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide. QPR stands for QUESTION, learning how and feeling more confident in asking the hard question “Are you thinking of suicide”, PERSUADE, persuading someone to get help, and REFER, knowing resources and where to refer a person in crisis.Just as people trained in CPR and the Heimlich Maneuver help save thousands of lives each year, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide and can help save a life.

Singleton
Chris Singleton travels the country speaking on unity, but often receives the question. Well, what can I do? In this presentation Chris will share something that everyone can do to build that culture of unity and togetherness.
Chris Singleton is a former minor league professional baseball player drafted by the Chicago Cubs. Over the last four years Chris has traveled the country giving keynote speeches and has presented to 54 organizations in the 2019 year alone! Chris has also spread his message through various media outlets and has been featured on ESPN’s E:60, Sports Illustrated magazine, CNN, and The Today Show.
Last year Chris was featured in the documentary Emanuel that was produced by NBA All-Star Steph Curry and Academy Award winning actress Viola Davis. Chris’ mother, Sharonda Coleman Singleton was murdered in a race related mass shooting at Mother Emanuel AME church. Chris inspired this city and the nation by forgiving the man who murdered his mother and stating that “Love is stronger than hate.”

“THROW KINDNESS AROUND LIKE ITS CONFETTI.”Six years ago, as Vivian learned to tie her first tourniquet with an old white T-shirt and a pen, she became completely enamored with HOSA-Future Health Professionals. Flash forward to today, this love and passion she has for HOSA continues. HOSA became home, and here she found her love for health care and caring for the well-being of others. HOSA allowed her to network, to break out of her shell, to learn, and to grow; all of which serve as steppingstones for her journey towards a career in pediatric neurology. HOSA also provided her with opportunities to serve her community like researching about Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. Vivian is in her sophomore year at the University of California, Los Angeles majoring in Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics. As she looks towards her future in HOSA, she cannot wait to spread the spirit of HOSA, making it not just a community but truly a family. Vivian lives life by the quote, “Be fearless in the pursuit of what sets your soul on fire,” and she hopes that each member will do the same, stepping out of their comfort zone and into their future. Besides loving HOSA, she also enjoys reading, adventures in nature, singing, playing guitar, and dancing. Vivian looks forward to serving as your President and embracing HOSA members from across the world.

SCHA is committed to making South Carolina one of the nation’s healthiest states by helping our hospitals and health systems provide the best care possible. Through our workforce development initiatives and efforts, we are committed to helping our hospitals recruit, develop and maintain a quality workforce. Building the pipeline of tomorrow’s healthcare workforce and recruiting outstanding talent are two of the four pillars we believe are essential to a successful workforce strategy, and we couldn’t accomplish either of those successfully for our state without out partnership with SC HOSA.
We work year-round to encourage students to consider the wide range of health professions available to them and provide guidance to those seeking information about health careers. We help our member hospitals communicate the many opportunities offered to students, such as mentorship, job shadowing, volunteering, and so forth and maintain a commitment to hospital and community involvement in healthcare workforce development efforts.
As we prepare to celebrate SCHA’s 100th anniversary in 2021, we recognize that our valuable partnerships with organizations like the SC Department of Education and SC HOSA are what help us thrive. SCHA will continue to value our position on the SC HOSA Board of Directors and the opportunities it provides to connect with health science educators and our future healthcare workforce. By helping individuals find a healthcare career that takes advantage of their strengths, we hope to build a stronger healthcare workforce in South Carolina.

“So never lose an opportunity of urging a practical beginning, however small, for it is wonderful how often in such matters the mustard-seed germinates and roots itself.” Florence Nightingale
I truly believe that my most important contribution in the classroom has been and will continue be to guide students through the ever changing and diverse career paths available in the health science field. While not all students will continue into health science, all students will be afforded the experience to discover what their own personal paths will be and be encouraged to pursue them. It is my daily goal to seek out as many opportunities to assist the students with this great task.

FACTS ABOUT CHILDHOOD CANCER
1 in every 285 children will be diagnosed with cancer.
Cancer is the number one cause of death by disease among children.
The average cost of a stay in a hospital for a child with cancer is $40,000.
43 children per day are expected to be diagnosed with cancer.
Only 4% of federal government cancer research funding goes to study pediatric cancer.
When you support PCF, you’re supporting a future where no child has to battle cancer. Through the generosity of donors like you, the brightest doctors can continue game-changing research; the country’s leading hospitals can continue working toward a cancer-free future; children and families receive life-changing care.
