TAKE A STAND By: Fr. O’Dell
I come from a family that has had quite a few doctors. My great grandfather
was a doctor. I have an uncle and a brother that are (were) doctors. I have known a lot of
doctors over the years. I think that it would be fair to say that I’ve been instilled with a
respect for medicine.
Now, most of my relatives who were doctors were the old “country doc” type
of physicians. They never made a lot of money. They never had huge, fancy houses.
They never took extended trips to exotic places. They were family folks who were truly
dedicated to healing the sick and helping the injured. It’s undoubtedly from their
example that I developed my respect for healers.
This past week however, I read an article in one of the big news magazines that
really made me stop and wonder. The article was about the astronomical cost of modern
medicine - and the near impossible financial burden that medical services place on the
people who need them the most. The article was very graphic.
One that immediately sticks in my mind is the cost that many hospitals bill for
routine administration of drugs. One pill labeled acetaminophen taken from a lot
purchased at a drug store might cost you 6 cents each. That means that one hundred
Tylenol should cost you about $6.00. Some hospitals routinely bill $30 for one Tylenol.
Another example, a routine chest X-ray that may be reimbursed at a rate of $30 by
Medicare but is routinely billed at $300 - $400 for all other patients. There is no equity to
the billing.
The article reports a nonprofit hospital required a seriously ill cancer patient to
pay $87,000 up front before any services would be rendered to him. The patient did not
have time to spare so took out a loan. Or, the nonprofit hospital sponsored by a public
university that made more than $531 million dollars in profit last year. That was after all
personnel, supply and overhead costs were paid. The question of course, is why a
nonprofit organization makes that kind of profit in the first place.
The article was very in-depth - but, by the time I was half way through I felt
kind of sick to my stomach. I also was left with a question - when is a Christian required
to speak out and take a stand. When are things so egregiously wrong that they can no
longer be ignored? After all, part of the role of the Christian laity is to stand up for
Christ’s teachings in the world.
Obviously, things like the cost of medicine have gotten there already. Whether
you are a Democrat - a Republican - or, even a Martian, the abuses of financial steward-
ship and common decency that occur in the cost of delivering medical services are so out
of kilter that we should be questioning them and doing something to remedy them. It is a
matter of being a decent human being - but more importantly about living out our faith,
too.
Make no mistake about it the medical field is certainly not the only industry or
profession that is enmeshed in these practices - there are many others. It all goes back to
the capital sins - greed, dishonesty, envy, anger, pride, arrogance, lust - these sins are
still very much with us and evident. So when do we need to stand up and be counted as
Christians.
First and foremost, we need to take a stand when something is clearly and
definitively wrong. If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and talks like a duck -
it probably is a duck and we need to quack back at it. The same is true for selfish and
sinful action. If it looks, feels and sounds like something wrong - it probably is wrong.
Don’t be afraid to expose it and confront it.
Second, don’t be afraid to take on “sacred cows” for fear of looking “out of
touch with current sentiment. If something was wrong 2,000 years ago - it is still wrong
today, no matter how much we would like to try and disguise it as something different.
Don’t necessarily take on every issue that may come down the pipe - but when the big
ones do come - use the Christian fortitude to take them on. Evil continues because of the
inaction of good people.
….. Continued
….. Continued
Third, if an action or program hurts someone else - then it surely is wrong.
The degree of hurt inflicted upon others becomes a good measuring stick to assess the
nature of any practice.
Fourth, keep an open mind and an open heart - but still acknowledge what we believe
and teach as Christians. It never hurts to listen to someone else and their opinion - but
don’t be swayed by what you know is simply not right.
Christians have a responsibility to stand up for what is moral and what is
good. We are called to help build God’s Kingdom here on earth - as we look forward to
participating in God’s perfect Kingdom in Heaven. Stand up and be counted when it’s a
matter of defending what we believe and what our faith teaches.
Have a great week.
