Train fanatic and Transnet Driver Rudi Venter caught in
the act of driving his train through the Natal Midlands by
fellow train fanatic and photographer Jacobus Marais
Editorial – Redaksioneel
It seems to me as if we were in a great war; well, that’s the idea I get when I look at the deteariation
of our railway stations and infrastructure like bridges and sidings. Please, we are not railway
bashing (i.e. like cop bashing) we are merely objectively showing the picture as it is to-day. Most of
us were in the army and a few were in the police. We were taught to respect “state property” – our
bases, stations, vehicles, craft and animals were always literally “ready for inspection”. Remember
![Page 9: 4 no 8 uloliwe](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022082203/568c539b1a28ab4916bb8008/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
9
all the “Surprise Inspections” we had? Even from the Auditor General’s staff and from the
Inspectorate attached to our various departments.
A great part of our heritage is in ruin and in ashes. I refer to the old historic station at Kroonstad, I
refer to the station at the City of Saints, Grahamstown. I few years ago I had the pleasure to travel
by train from Port Elizabeth to Alicedale and from there to Grahamstown and back, due to Boon
Boonzaaier of Bosveld Train Safaris. Steam engines plinthed at three stations I know of are in a bad
way: Grahamstown, Vereninging and Kroonstad. Coming back to state property, the first I
remember of state property was when we travelled by train. I had put my little booted feet on the
bunk. I received a “klap” from my mother that I will never forget – “Take your feet off!” Respect for
state property is part of our civilisation, the buildings and infrastructure were after all said and
done; built with taxpayer’s money. I was informed that cleaners are not employed to clean our
locomotives. The “railways” are run on business lines and cleaners don’t bring money in. Well my
argument is: “A little bit of pride will enhance productivity! If you have a nice clean locomotive you
would want to work and perform to the limit! ... do the extra mile!” Let’s install pride in our
railways; it is all part of the circle of life.
I have looked into my crystal ball, no good news, however! I see many yellow men coming to fix
our infra structure. I see them working on our rails! I see many new trains standing still. But a word
of caution; the help will come at a terrible price! It won’t be the price you see on the price tag; No
Sir! It will be the hidden costs that our next generation we will be burdened with.
I do forget things – so, please in future use the Uloliwe’s new email address!
Without you, I cannot do this magazine!
Thank you for your support Gentlemen!

Wepener’s Perambulations and … some Railway History
• 20130713
Hi guys.
Harmony Surface Rail at the exchange yard with Sheltam.
RRL's 31 class near the show grounds and a couple of photos at the exchange yard.
The 2x orange 34's are heading to Virginia's ballast siding, here they are at the Sand River
Bridge just before Virginia. The other shots are at the ballast siding.
The petrol train is heading south at Whites.
Again at Whites, this time two 34's returning light from the branch.
Another petrol train, this time heading north near Kalkvlakte.
A light 34 returning from Wesselsbron between Friedesheim and Welkom.
Near the same spot as above, RRL's 31 heading towards Odendaalsrus with a
load of hoppers.
During the week this loco hauled a load of 20 loaded hoppers to the exchange yard, the
first time we get such a long train of ore.

‘n Spoorwegman se Gebed: Johannes van Rensburg [Transnet
Engineering KDS]
my Hooflig.

Hi Hennie,

Ietsie vir die volgende Uloliwe:
Emmaus code EMM, a siding for Live Stock and Vehicles only, controlled by Perdeberg,
code PDG Station number 462, open for all classes of traffic. Emmaus is the most central
point on the Railways in South Africa. Many years ago it had a plaque to this effect.
The line from Hamilton to Beaconsfield was built as follows: Authority
24th November, 1905. I.C.C.R. [Inter-Colonial Council of the Transvaal and Orange Free
State Railways]. Opened 8th April, 1908, 152km. Have any of the Uloliwe readers a
photograph of the plaque?

Nostalgie: Die Trein Na Heimweë: Thys du Plessis
Thys du Plessis and I attended the same school in Durban. His father
was in the SAR & H Police, my father was in the SA Police. We both
followed in the footsteps of our our resepective fathers. Later our paths
crossed again when the SAR & H Police was absorbed into the the SA
Police. Thys has always been a writer and poet, here is one of his
nostaligic Afrikaans railway stories. “The Trans-Natal Express Train
from Johannesburg to Durban is now departing from platform
14. Please enjoy your journey.”
![Page 21: 4 no 8 uloliwe](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022082203/568c539b1a28ab4916bb8008/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
21
Attention please all passengers. The Trans-Karoo Express Train from Johannesburg to Cape Town
will depart from platform 15 at 20:00. I repeat, the Trans-Karoo Expresstrain from Johannesburg to
Cape Town will depart from platform 15 at 20h00 ...”
nou vanaf platform 14. Geniet asseblief u reis.”
“The Trans-Natal Eexpress Train from Johannesburg to Durban is now departing from platform 14.
Please enjoy your journey.”
vantevore of daarna weer sien nie.
![Page 22: 4 no 8 uloliwe](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022082203/568c539b1a28ab4916bb8008/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
22
agterkom, verwag hy so ’n fooitjie2.
waardering as hy kry.
Mense begin hul plekke inneem net ingeval.
Neem asseblief u sitplekke in. Attention all
passengers for the Trans-Karoo Express Train from Johannesburg to Cape Town. The train
will depart within 5 minutes. Please take your seats.”
ry. Kinders raak bang buite. Sê nou net die trein ry weg met Pa? Maar dan is dit asof alles
in plek val.
2 Travel Expenses: SA Police Regulations made provisions for the tipping of SAR porters when one travelled
on duty. Porters were also knowledgeable people; they helped ladies, gentlemen and senior officers first
because they knew troopers and constables were bad tippers (I mean we were at bottom of the food chain).
No constable would dream claiming for “tipping”; the financial Sgt would immediately queried this claim!
“What! Were you sick?” – HBH.
![Page 23: 4 no 8 uloliwe](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022082203/568c539b1a28ab4916bb8008/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
23
So was die treinstasie dan so ’n integrale deel van ons lewens gewees.
Wagenmakersvallei bekend.
Dié dag is as so belangrik geag dit is tot

gekomponeer – “The Railway Polka” deur Master James C. Roome.
Hierdie eerste lokomotief het alom bekend gestaan as Blackie. Toe hy in onbruik geraak
Hierdie deel is in 1861 geopen.
Daaroor was die kontrakteurs so
![Page 25: 4 no 8 uloliwe](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022082203/568c539b1a28ab4916bb8008/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
25
Daardie eerste treinrit is as volg in die destydse London Times beskryf:
“The train wound its sinuous way into the deep recesses of the Eerste River Valley where the
somnolent denizens of the pretty village of Stellenbosch, erst ‘Sleepy Hollow’ find a luxurious
resting-place. Later it dashed along the banks of the Berg River towards Wellington and was greeted
on arrival, not only by a Royal Salute given by die cannon of Artillery, but by the volunteers band
and the acclamations of an immense crowd.”
(vandag bekend as Mossop), die Pioneer-droëvrugte-maatskappy, Hugo’s Jam and
geld vandag steeds.
![Page 26: 4 no 8 uloliwe](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022082203/568c539b1a28ab4916bb8008/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
26
Versailles kon hul almal gadeslaan. Onder hierdie vernames was die Boere-generaals soos
Christiaan de Wet, Koos de la Rey, Lous Botha, J.B.M. Hertzog en Jan Smuts, asook die
presidente Paul Kruger, M.T. Steyn en F.W. Reitz, sowel as mense soos die mynmagnaat
“This is a most important epoch in the history of the Colony. The magic power of steam seemed
likely to supersede the ancient mode of transit which had existed since the time of Jan van Riebeeck.”
skoolgegaan.
stasie. Nes die afgelope 150 jaar.

Soul of A Railway (SoAR): Les Pivnic & Charlie Lewis
Dear SoAR readers,
Having brought youse down to Volksrust, we are now travelling in more leisurely style on
the Avontuur line:https://sites.google.com/site/soulorailway/home/system-3-1 (click on
Part 3).
The latest chapter was written by David Payling several years ago but he has recently
revised and updated it. A lot of sad things have happened since he started. We'll try and
steer clear of the depressing stuff - it doesn't look as if much can be done about the present
situation but we wish those who are still trying every success. They are battling against all
odds because few, if any, who pretend to govern the Eastern Cape seem interested in
anything except that which will line their own pockets.
In case you get a bit confused, the captions to the photos were written by me - David can't
be blamed for them in any way! We are looking for ways to make the site a bit less
disjointed and will let everyone know when it's done.
I have added a coupla photos to the Avontuur line introduction too - one of them is a nice
photo of a Walmer line Bagnall tank coming down Station Street which came to light
straight after I wrote that action pictures of these pretty engines didn't seem to exist.
A reminder that the photos are not intended to be blown up more than 9" (220mm) wide.
They will get blurred after that as this is our only mechanism against piracy.

• “Absence” an Essay by Robbie Green
My storie se naam is ABSENCE:
![Page 68: 4 no 8 uloliwe](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022082203/568c539b1a28ab4916bb8008/html5/thumbnails/68.jpg)

Pragtige
’’NO pictures PLEASE”; gevolg met: “We need our Privacy,‘’ besef ek dat hierdie jong
as “Billy”.
My hand gaan outomaties na my sak en weereens ABSENCE, my sak is leeg... Jammer ek
Platform 1.
Daar staan ‘n geel spoorwegbank, skeef.
ABSENCE .

TRANSVAAL.
daar staan waar hy staan...
Goed in stand gehou oor jare ... ’n Seun strompel en steier by
my verby, op ‘n high, huiwer ‘n oomblik en kyk my vol in die oë ... ken ek jou ... het ek jou
nie al êrens gesien nie? ... al wat ek in sy oë sien is ABSENCE.
Hier het die ABSENCE waar geword.
Groete
Robbie Green.

Salie Henrico
Ek is Salie Henrico van Pretoria. Ek is 'n onderwyser. Ek het as
& H. groot geword. My
as lynkampbestuurder afgetree. Dus het ek baie tyd naby en
langs treinspore deurgebring. So my stokperdjie is dus
modeltreine. Geniet die foto’s Hennie.

Dankie vir die voorreg en geleentheid Hennie.
As ek gou by my pa mag begin (baie van die ouer Kaapse
spoorwegmanne mag hom dalk onthou).

my toe oorreed om as leerlingingenieursassitent na “Sinjale”
oor te kom.
My ma verongeluk ongelukkig tydens my matriekeksamen en
weermagdiens gedoen. Begin toe my leerlingskap en
kwalifiseer as ingenierursassistent in 1981 en kry 'n aanstelling
in Kaapstad.
My spoorwegloopbaan eindig in Julie 1983 nadat ek bedank en
jou bloed!
• Jacobus Marais
Goeie more almal, ek is Jacobus Marais en woon in

Corrie Dreyer
Nou ja. Nou is dit seker my beurt. Ek het in 1987 begin in
Soutrivier as ‘n assistent. Later geskuif na Bellville en in 1993
my treindrywerseksamen afgelê op 6E/6E1.
Einde
1998 is ek oor na Metrorail (Kaapstad). Het later na Soutrivier
(buitestasie) oorgeplaas waar ek tans weeksaam is.
by die trein nabootsers hier. Was ook betrokke met die opstel

Francois Mattheüs
Goeie dag almal, dit is nou ek, Francois
Mattheüs en my gesinnetjie woonagtig
in Brackenfell, naby Bellville in die
Kaap. (My vrou, Desiree en seuntjie
Luan.)
vliegtuie, skepe ens. My liefde vir treine
en belangstelling daarin het egter baie
verdiep toe ek en my vrou mekaar
ontmoet het. Haar pa is Johan Brand
(Langbrand) by TFR Bellville wat ook
sedert 1997 die Bloutrein dryf. Alles wat
ek weet oor treine het ek by hom geleer
neem! Groetnis!
• Dirk Odendaal
Ek is Dirk (“Plankies”) Odendaal, begin in 1976 in Pietermaritzburg

Illustration from Internet
Thanks to the many mines in the PWV, Western Transvaal and Orange Free State areas, the
R.T.S. passenger sections in these regions flourished, transporting inbound and outbound
mine workers to many parts of South Africa.
Welkom had 101 bus drivers and the same amount of assistants, many of which were also
in possession of code 14 heavy duty driving licences and P.D.P. certification. [Public
Driving Permit].
A fully equipped workshop, including body shop. The depot also had its own filling
station, later Petro cards were issued. There were 100 passenger busses of three main types.
Haulers with double tiered coach and two wheeled trailer. Local miners calling these old
vehicles “Skoro-Skoro”, when referring to them, identifying these coaches as “Scrap
vehicles”. These coaches were manufactured by the large R.T.S. coach building workshop
at Langlaagte. Later re-named “Harmonie” to distinguish it from the nearby station of
Langlaagte. These coaches were used on Fridays returning on Sundays from Witsieshoek,
Ficksburg border gate, Maseru border gate and van Rooyens border gate, near the town of
Wepener. Hard to believe but many mine workers were so intent on returning after their
Friday early shift was complete, that they would, with a valid ticket and drivers
permission. Open the large luggage bin under the coach, attach a piece of “Blou Draad” to
keep it closed on dirt roads and lie in the bins, rather than wait for the next morning’s
scheduled bus.
![Page 91: 4 no 8 uloliwe](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022082203/568c539b1a28ab4916bb8008/html5/thumbnails/91.jpg)

Transtate modern high bodied, for luggage space, tach axle busses. Hauled a two axle
trailer.
Transporter modern low bodied dual rear wheeled busses. Hauled a two axle trailer.
Welkom had daily scheduled busses to:
ThabaNchu and Bloemfontein via Excelsior, Witsieshoek, Ficksburg, van Rooyenshek,
Johannesburg and Klerksdorp, these left at 07h30 returning at 17h30.
Umtata, Nongoma, Johannesburg and Queenstown busses left at 17h30 returning the next
day.
On Friday evenings returning Sundays, there were 3 busses called “Durban Shoppers” for
local, mostly female small shop owners, to purchase goods there for re-sale on the mines.
On Fridays haulers only would be sent to the many mine shafts on the Goldfields, to sell
tickets in advance, this eliminated long queues at ticket offices and excellent planning as to
the number of busses needed on the various routs could be worked out.
There was a Satellite depot of Welkom at Klerksdorp. A depot at Welverdiend, large
Harmonie depot in Johannesburg, Salvcokop depot in Pretoria and a small depot in
Queenstown.
Sadly today there are only the Harmonie, Salvokop, Durban and Cape Town depots still in
operation. On the Gold Fields two private bus companies from Welkom and Virginia now
provide some of these services.
The Harmony mining group, still used grey with gold stripes and lettering, haulers with
coaches, between shafts to transport workers.
Groete,
John and Jacque.

• Last month: Train Cemetery, Bolivia via Piet van Zyl
One of the major tourist attractions of southwestern Bolivia is an antique train cemetery. It

is located 3 km (1.9 MI) outside Uyuni and is connected to it by the old train tracks. The
town served in the past as a distribution hub for the trains carrying minerals on their way
to the Pacific Ocean ports.
The train lines were built by British engineers who arrived near the end of the 19th century and
formed a sizable community in Uyuni. The rail construction started in 1888 and ended in 1892.
The trains were mostly used by the mining companies. In the 1940s, the mining industry
collapsed, partly due to the mineral depletion. Many trains were abandoned thereby
producing the train cemetery. There are talks to build a museum out of the cemetery.

Thank you for yet another super edition of Uloliwe.
I can add something on the Bolivia story. The "train cemetery" is actually the scrapyard for
Uyuni workshops which was the key Bolivian steam loco workshop facility on the Metre
gauge FCAB (FC Antafagasta - Bolivia) today run in Bolivia by Ferroviaria Andina SA
(FCA) after the State Railways were privatised in 1996 (the Bolivian part of the formerly
British owned FCAB had been nationalised in 1964). The Chilean part of the FCAB is still
called the FCAB but is now Chilean owned with traffic booming.
Quite aside from the dramatic setting (especially at sunrise / sunset) of the 17 skeletal loco
remains, they include some which are very rare and historic, all except 3 being former
FCAB main line locos. There are five of the 1913 Beyer-Peacock Kitson-Meyers (and parts of
the sixth), three Beyer Peacock Garratts, two 1913 Kitson 2-8-2's, two 1906 Alco-Rogers 2-8-
0's, two outside-framed Henschel 4-6-2's of 1914 and three Borsigs. There are a further 16
steam locomotives inside Uyuni Workshops and another preserved in the town. Steam
finished on Bolivian Railways in the early 1980s and most of the locos survive dotted
around the Country.
Although the "cemetary" locomotives did not work for mining companies, there was a 2'6"
gauge FCAB branch line from Uyuni which ran about 25 km up into the hills serving the
famous Baron Rotshchild mines at Pulacayo. The railway closed in 1959 but the whole
Pulacayo town is now a semi-museum with the locomotives left where they stood when
the railway closed. There are 6 steam including a couple of incredible survivors one of
which is a Robert Stephenson 4-6-0 of 1884 that was rebuilt from a Webb Compound, all
the steam were built before 1912 and four of them are former FCAB locomotives which
date from before the FCAB was regauged from 2'6" to Metre. Here is a photo taken when I
visited in 2008 of a Rogers 2-8-0 of 1900 and the Robert Stephenson 4-6-0 outside the shed
they havn't moved for 54 years.
Kind Regards
John
