The4-HPledgetalksaboutmakingadifferenceinone’scommunityand country,but4-Hbenevolencecanextendmuchfurtherafield.

TheMakingADifferenceForLifeClubisasuccessful initiativeoftheBrant4-Hcommunity.Theclub,leadbydaughterandmotherteamLesleighandElaineElgie,cameintobeingseveralyearsagowhenElaineattendedasessionatthe4-HOntarioConference&AnnualMeetingcalled“AreYouMAD?”.StandingforMakingADifference,thefirstMAD4LifeclubstartedinBrantintheearly2000’sandfocusedonsewing.MembersmadedressestosendtoanorphanageinMalawai,Africa.

Afterashortbreak,theclubwasrevivedin2007byLesleigh,whoranitasayouthleaderandhascontinuedtorunitasaleadersince.

“4-HmademeintothepersonIamandI’mextremelygratefulforthat,”saidLesleigh.“Volunteeringisawayformetogivebacktotheorganization—aswellastoinstillallthatIgotfromthisamazingprogram.”

ThefocusoftheclubistobuildteamworkandleadershipskillsandforthelastnumberofyearstheyhavehelpedwiththeirlocalRelayForLifeevent.In2014,sixverydedicatedandhardworkingmemberswentbacktotheoriginalfocusoftheMADclub,sewing.TheysenttheresultsoftheirworktoMozambique.

Membersoftheclubworkedtirelesslytocomplete39dresses,26pockets/pouchesand18pairsofshortstosendtoAfrica.Additionally,thepoucheswerefilledwithfivedollarsworthofdollarstoreitems,orany-thingthemembershadfromhomewhichtheywantedtodonate.EachmemberalsowroteeightnotecardseachtopasstheirgreetingstotheyouthreceivingitemsinMozambique.

AlloftheseitemsmadetheirwaytoAfricathroughLesleigh’sfriendJenniferMiddleton,whowasabouttoembarkonherfourthtriptoMozambiquewithhercharityLetKidsBeKids!

WhenJenniferattendedtheBrant4-HAchievementDayforMADtomakeapresentationaboutherchar-ity,theclubsurprisedherbyparadingoutaclotheslinefullof itemstotakeonhertripandhandouttochildrenathomevisitsandclothinggiveaways.

“Ithinkthememberslearnedjusthowluckytheytrulyaretohavewhattheyhaveanditmadethemmoregrateful,”saidLesleigh.“Ihopeitgavethemagreatersenseofwantingtogivebackandallowedthemtoseethattheycangivebackandmakeadifferenceincommunitiesnearandfar.”

As4-Hgetsreadytocelebrate100yearsinOntario,Iam,asever,impressedbythehistory,depthanddedicationofourstakeholders.EveryoneImeetwhohasexperienced4-Hhasaninspiringstoryabouthowtheirinvolvementchangedthemforthebetter.Therearesomanyfacetsof4-H,includingclubs,shows,achievementdays,communityprojects,regionalevents,camps,conferences,travelopportunities,scholarshipsandcompetitions.Allofthesemakethe4-Hexperience,andeachisunique.

Astheneedforagriculturalleadersgrows,andwitheachriseinyouthunemploy-ment,sothe needforthe4-Hprogramgrowsstronger.Foracentury,4-Hhasbeenaplacewhereyouthdevelopthecharacter,skillsandconnectionsthatleadtosuccessineducation,employmentandcommunityleadership.4-Hisacharac-terbuilderandaresumebuilder.Employersknowthat4-H’rsareresponsibleandorganized—thattheyapplyjudgingskillsforcriticalanalysis;publicspeakingskillstostateopinions;leadershipskillstomodelpositivebehaviorandinspireothers;andtimeandtalenttoeffectchange.Byfosteringclearheads,loyalhearts,andservinghandsinyouthandadultsthroughourleadershipprograms,webuildhealthycommunitiesandcreateatalentedworkforce.

Thisyear,anewprogramontheUniversityofGuelph’sRidgetowncampusallowedstudentstoremaininvolvedinthe4-Hprogramwhileinpost-secondarystudies.Thisinitiativecontinuestodevelopandexpand.

TheLivestockHealthWorkingGroup,comprisedofindustryprofessionals,madegreatstridestoengage4-H’rsandthegeneralpublicinqualityanimalhealthpractices.

TheCloverbudprogramforchildrenages6–8continuedtogrowin2014,asvolunteersembracedthethree-yearrotatingcurriculum.Thisstrategicinitiativecapturestheattentionoffamilieswithyoungchildrenandintroducesthemtothe4-Hexperience.

TheOntario4-HFoundationcreatednewandsimplifiedwaysforlocal4-HAssociationstobenefitfrominvestments.Workingwithlocalvolunteers,theTrusteeshavecreatednewoptionsforinvestmentandclarifiedexistingones.

4-Hmembersandvolunteerscontinuetoreportthatthe4-Hprogramincludesqualitytraining.Newandre-engagingvolunteersreporthighsatisfactionrates,andyouthatprovincialprogramsreportskill-buildinginleadership,businessmanagementandmore.Theloyaltyof4-H’rsisdemonstratedinthehighpercent-ageofyouthwhograduatefromtheprogramtobecomevolunteersandgivebacktotheircommunities.

Ilookforwardtocelebratingthecentennialof4-HinOntariowithmembers,volunteers,alumniandsupporters.Ilookforwardtoseeingyoung4-Halumnivolunteeringwith4–H,findingsuccessinemployment,andnurturingtheirconfidencetobecometothemostrespectedleadersintheircommunities.Thiscontinuesthe100-yearlegacyofwhatthe4-Hprograminspiresinyoungpeople.

The Real Impact of 4-H

EmilyBromleyfirstgottheitchtojoin4-HwhenshewaseightyearsoldandsawotheryouthshowingcattleattheRenfrewFair.Thinkingitwouldbefuntotryitaswell,andhavingparentswhowereonce4-Hmembersthemselves,shefeltacompulsiontogive4-Hashot.

Afterjoining,4-Hquicklybecameahugepartofherlife.Emilybecameinvolvedinbeef,dairy,sheep,goatandfieldcropsclubs,aswellasothernon-agriculturalclubssuchasclown,drama,crafting,choco-late,tie-dye,leadershipandsmallengineclubs.ShealsoservedontheRenfrew4-HAssociationBoardofDirectors.

Fromtheageof11untilsheturned22,Emilycreatedmany4-Hmemories,includingbeingapartofhercounty’sGoForTheGoldteamforthreeyears,winningsilverandbronzemedals.ShealsohasfondmemoriesofattendingtheRoyalWinterFairwithherbeefproject.

Emilywasalwaysnervouswhengettingintotheshowring,untiloneofherbiggestmentorsandsup-porterstoldhertojustsmileandeverythingwouldbefine.ThisadvicestuckwithEmily,evenuponhispassing.

“ItwashardnottocrywhenIwalkedintotheringforthefirsttimeafterhepassedawayinAugustof2008,”shesays.“ButmydadtoldmewhenIwaswalkingintotheringto‘Justsmile,youhaveTommywatchingoveryou’.SoIsuckedbackthetearsandwentintotheringwithasmileonmyface.IwonSeniorChampionShowmanandthenwentontowinGrandChampionShowman.”

AnothergreataccomplishmentforEmilywaswinningtheJenniferMcVeighFellowshipAward.

“Beingnominatedforthisawardshowedmethatallmyhardworkintheclubshadpaidoffanddidn’tgounnoticedbymyleaders.”

Emilysaysshe’slearnedthatpatienceiseverythingandsharesthatshegainedasenseofcommunitythrough4-H.Sheisnowreadytogiveback.Carryingonwithher4-Hinvolvement,Emilyisnowenteringacareerasa4-HOntariovolunteer.ShehasplanstobeinvolvedwiththeBeefClub,GoForTheGold,herAssociation’sBoardofDirectors,andalsowithavarietyofleadershipclubs.

The Real Impact of 4-H

DonnaBridgehasbeeninvolvedin4-Hsinceshewasachild,andisstillisusingwhatshelearnedfromher4-HexperiencestocontinuetofurthertheprogramasVicePresidentoftheCanadian4-HCouncilBoardofDirectors.

AleaderinBruce4-HAssociationformanyyears,Donnahasbeenvolunteeringforover20years.ShewontheSyngenta4-HOntarioArborAwardforoutstanding4-Hvolunteersin2009,andhasheldallherlocalassociationpositions.DonnawasontheOntario4-HCouncilBoardofDirectorsbothasaboarddirectorandvicepresident.ShealsospenttimeasOntario’srepresentativeto4-HCanada,andhasnowbeenamemberoftheCanadian4-HCouncilsince2000.

Donnaisexcitedtobewith4-Honanationallevelandislookingforwardtocontinuingtodeveloptheoutstandingyouthwhowillbefutureleadersintheworld.

“Althoughourorganizationis100yearsoldit’slikewe’restartingfreshandnew,”saysDonna.“Wehavenew,enhancedprogramslookingatthenextgenerationandhowtheylearnandhowtoengagetheminscience,technologyandtheenvironment.Therenewedenthusiasmfocusingondelivering4-HinCanadaistrulyinfectious.”

BothDonna’smotherandgrandmotherwereleadersoflifeskillsclubs.Comingfromafamilyofeightchildrenwithonlyonesister—whowassevenyearsherelder—shefeelsthat4-Hgaveherachancetoshareinsomeofhersister’sactivities.Oneofherfirstclubswastheknittingclub,andDonnasaysthatwhiletheslippersshemadewereadisaster,thelessonsshelearnedaboutperseveranceandsuccessfaroutweighedthisminorsetback.

Donnaholdsmanygreatmemoriesofhertimewithhercattleasa4-H’r,andalsohasfondmemoriesofherownkidsshowingtheircalvesatlocalfairs.

“Weusedtosay,‘Worklikeadevilallweek,justsoyoucangetupat5amSaturdaytogotoafair,’butIwouldn’ttradeaminuteofit,”shesays.

Publicspeaking,determinationandfocusareskillsshebelievescanbelearnedthrough4-H.

“Ilovethevaluesthat4-Hhasandbelievethatyouthandadultscanbebetterfortheirparticipation.”

As 4-H Ontario turns 100 years old in 2015, I would like to thank all of thosewhoplay anintegralpart inthedeliveryofour4-Hprogram.Forthememberswhosign-up willingly toembracetheknowledgetransfer,personalgrowthandlonglastingfriendshipsofinvolvement;forthevolunteerswhohavethepassion,drive andcommitment to inspireyouth in theircommunities; for thesponsorsandpartnersfortheircontinuedsupportandwhobelieveinthe4-Hprogramandtheimpactthatithasindevelopingleadership,self-confidence,publicspeaking,criticalthinkingandall-roundlifeskills;andforthestaffwhoworkdiligentlytodelivertheprogramprovince-wide.

Atthe4-HOntarioConference&AnnualMeetingheldin2014,thereweresomenewresourcesthatwerereleasedtoourmembers.Therehasbeendevelopmentofunderstandingofourgovernancestructure,aMemorandumofUnderstandingbe-tweentheCouncilandtheFoundation,thedevelopmentofonlineservicesthroughthe4-Hwebsite,andthelaunchofonlineregistrationof4-Hprojectanimals.

Withinlocalcommunitiesandworkplacesitisamazingtoseecommunityleaderswhoare4-Halumni.Itisinspiringtolistentomanyvolunteersandmemberswhoareempoweredbytellingtheir4-Hstory—sharingtheirleadershipjourneyandwhat4-Handthenumerousmentorshavegiventothemovertheyears.Itisinter-estingtohearhow4-Hhasimpactedtheirlifeandhowtheyhaveconnectedwithpeople that theymightnototherwisehavemet.And it isgratifying toseehowmanyalumniarenowinfluentialleadersatworkandwithintheircommunities.

Strongsupportfromour funders—includingOMAFRA—assists4-HOntarioinpursuing itsmissionand indevelopingyouthand leaderswithinacommunity.Theirgeneroussupportmakesitpossibleforourorganizationtoexistandmovingforward,tothrive.Thedonationsthatwereceiveencourage,enableandempowerourlocalleaderstobebridge-buildersbyinspiringandshapingthefuturethroughthepowerofyouth.

The100thAnniversaryof4-HinOntarioprovidesafocalpointforayear-longarrayofcelebratoryactivities.For100years,4-HOntariovolunteers,members,andstaffhaveworkedtogethertocreateoneoftheforemostleadershipprogramsforyouth,celebratingtheremarkablesuccessofaprogramthatremainsaspopu-lartodayasitwasbackinitsearliestyears.

TheOntario4-HCouncilBoardofDirectors isactivelyworkingondevelopingthestrategicplanfor 2016andbeyond.ThisnewStrategicPlanningFrameworkisonethatwillsetthestagefortheorganization’ssecondcenturyofservice.Withafutureclearlyembeddedinamodelbasedoncollaborativepartnerships,inten-tionalprogramdesignandoutcomeevaluation,Ontario4-HCouncilishopingtobringmentoringservicestoevenmoreOntarioyouthandfamilies.Asanorgani-zationthathastraditionallyopenedadoortotheworldforyouth,wewidenourfocusinordertodiversifyoursourcesofincomeandensurethatourorganizationcontinuestooffertoyouthlife-changingexperiences.

Thankyouforyourcontinuedsupportofthisoutstandingmovement.Inthe4-HOntarioprogram,youarethebackboneasstakeholderssupportingthefutureofayoungpersonbygivingthemasenseofbelonging,buildingpersonalconfidenceandempoweringthemwiththevalueofcommunityservice.

Basis for Qualified OpinionIn common with many charitable organizations, the Council derives revenue from the general public in the formof donations, fundraising activities, membership fees and other revenues, the completeness of which is notsusceptible to satisfactory audit verification. Accordingly, our verification of these revenues was limited to theamounts recorded in the records of the Council and we were not able to determine whether any adjustments forunrecorded receipts might be necessary for these types of revenues received during the year.

The Sudbury 4-H Club took their club to the municipal halls in 2014, resulting in the proclamation of“ShowYour4-HColours”Dayanda4-Hflag-raisingatSudburyCityHall.

DuringNational4-HMonthinNovemberlastyear,theSudbury4-HClubwasprivilegedtomeetwithMadamMayorMarianneMatichukwheresheproclaimedWednesday,November5tobe“ShowYour4-HColours”DayinSudbury.

Theideawasbornwhen4-HleaderPauletteMacdonaldcontactedthecitytoarrangeameetingwiththemayor,so4-Hmemberscouldsharetheirexperiencesandlearnmoreaboutthecity.Itwasalsolookedatasacitizenshipcomponentof4-Hfortheclub.

MayorMatichukmetwiththe4-HClubinherboardroomandaskedmembersquestionsdirectlyrelatingtothe4-Horganization.Memberssharedtheirknowledgeofparliamentaryprocedureandsharedthecom-munityinvolvementtheyhadundertakenduringtheyear.TheSudbury4-HClubExecutiveattendedthemeeting,aswellasleadersPauletteandWayneMacdonald.AllgeneralSudbury4-Hmemberswereinvitedtoattend,aswell.

“Wewereveryproudtoshareour4-HstorieswithMadamMayor,”saidPaulette,whentalkingabouttheimportanceofattendingaformalgatheringlikethisanditbeinganimportantpartofbuildingprideandcontinuityintheclubmembership.

TheProclamationwassignedandofficiallyreadinfrontoftheclubandthemayorsharedingroupphotos.Afterthemeeting,the groupmovedtothecourtyardwhereclubpresidentKaylaWesthelpedinraisingthe4-HflagtorepresentallthemembersinSudburyDistrict.

“Thisisanintegralpartof4-H,”saidPaulette.“Gettingtoknowthecommunitythatweliveininsuchawaythatitremovestheintimidationandthedisconnectwithcityofficials.Themembershavehadthisexperi-enceeachyearforthepastseveralyears.Theyareverycomfortableaskingquestionsofcityofficialsandunderstandingthattheyareimportantcitizensintheircity.”

Muchmorethanatriviacontest,the4-HOntarioGoForTheGoldcompetitionrepresentsalong-standingandpopularpursuitfor4-Hmembers.Thecompetitionsprovideexperiencefor4-Hmembers,aswellaspushingthemtoincreasetheirknowledgeof4-Hprojectmaterials,agriculture,food,community,eventsandmore,allinateamatmosphere.

GoForTheGoldcompetitionsareheldatthe4-HAssociationlevel,followedby4-HRegionallevelcom-petitions.Theteamsarecoachedby,andcompetitionshostedby,4-Hvolunteers.Each4-HRegion’stopteamthenhasitsopportunitytoshineattheprovincialchampionship,whichtakesplaceattheRoyalAgri-culturalWinterFaireachNovemberinToronto.

The2014championshipwashighlightedbyadominatingshowingfromtheteamfromRegion3,repre-sentingKawarthaLakes-Haliburton.Theteamoffirst-timecompetitorswent5-0inroundrobinplayandamassedanimpressivepointstotal.Afterthisgreatshowing,theyenteredthefinalagainsttheteamfromRegion4,representingHalton4-H,arematchofthefirstroundrobingame.KLHcameoutontopinthefinal,withadecisivewin.

TheamountofpreparationputinbymembersofGoForTheGoldteamsislegendary,andshowcasesthecommitmentandfocusof4-Hmembers.Eachteamusesitsownmethodsofpreparation,withsometeamsstartingtopreparemonthsinadvanceofthefirstroundsofcompetition.

KLHteammemberCassandraGorrillsaidthatherteammateswerefondofthedrillingstyleoflearning,inpreparingforthecompetition.“That’sbasicallyhowIpreparedfortoday.Youjustkindalearnasmuchasyoucaninashortperiodoftime.It’sintense.”

“ThesecondwewonRegionalsiswhenwestartedpreparingforthis,”saidTrevorKennedyoftheKLHchampionship team.“I thinkanother thingthatwent into thepreparation for todaywasreciting lotsofacronymsandsymptomsofdiseasesandthingslikethatthatcameintoplaytoday.”

Message from the Ontario 4-H Foundation Chair

TheOntario4-HFoundation’sroleistomanageandgrowOntario4-Hendow-mentfundstofinanciallysupportthevision,strategicplanandprogramsof4-HinOntario.Itsfocusislong-termfundingfor4-H.TheFoundationiscomprisedofagroupofactive,caringvolunteerswhoworkcloselywiththeOntario4-HCouncilandthestaffof4-HOntario.

In response to the new Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act, the Board ofTrusteesreviseditsgeneralbylaw,whichwasapprovedattheFoundation’s2014AnnualGeneralMeeting.TheFoundationandOntario4-HCouncilhaveacloseworkingrelationship.Thebylawthatwasreplacedprescribedanumberofwaysthe twoorganizationscollaborated.SinceOntario4-HCouncil is incorporatedprovincially, and the Foundation federally, legally the two organizations mustoperate independently. To ensure a continued strong working relationship, theFoundationandCouncilhavesignedaMemorandumofAgreementthatdescribesthevariouswayswewillcontinue tocollaborateandsupportoneanother.ThisdocumentwasapprovedbytheBoardofTrusteeslatein2014.

InMarch,theFoundationintroducedtheLocalAssociationInvestmentAccount(LAIA).Thisinitiativeencourageslocal4-HAssociationstoinvestsurplusfundswiththeFoundation.Whilemany4-HAssociationsinvestsurplusfundsinGICs,LAIAsprovideanopportunityforincreasedreturn.Althoughthereisariskas-sociatedwithmarketfluctuations,Foundationfundsareinvestedconservatively,andoverthepastfewyearshavereturnedanaverageofabout6%.TheLAIAwasdesignedforAssociationswishingtoinvesttheirsurplusfundsforshortperiodsoftime(~10years)untiltheyareneeded.AnumberofAssociationshaveinvestedfundsintheLAIA.Eachspringthereisawindowfordepositingandwithdraw-ingthesefunds.ReturnsarethesameasfortheFoundation’sgeneralendowmentfund.LikeAssociationtrustfunds,theyareinflation-protectedandannualearn-ingscanbepaideachyearwithoutwithdrawingthecapital.

AttherequestofanumberofAssociations,Trusteeshavealsocreatedpolicyandguidelines for withdrawing capital from Local Association Endowment Funds.

Thesefundsareconsideredlongerterm(~30years)thanthoseintheLAIA,buttheycanbewithdrawnbylocalAssociationsunlessthereisagiftagreementasso-ciatedwiththemwhichdictatesotherwise.AswiththeLAIA,thereisanwindowinlatespringeachyearforwithdrawals.

In2014FoundationTrusteescontinuedtheireffortstoconnectwith4-Hfami-liesandfriendsinseveralcommunitiesacrossOntario,todiscussopportunitiestosupport4-Hthroughgrowingtheendowmentfunds.Many4-Hfamilieshavegivenyearsofinvolvementtothe4-Hprogram,andarenowlookingforawaytosupporttheprogramthroughmakingasignificant legacygift.TheOntario4-HFoundation—withitscharitablestatus—isanidealwaytomakethathappen.Thisinitiativewillbeenhancedin2015.

Again in 2014, the Ontario 4-H Foundation organized two charity golf tourna-mentsinsupportoftheFoundation.Thesetournamentsweresuccessfulinraisingfunds,butasimportantly,theywereagreatwaytocelebratetogether.Thesupportof volunteers,participantsandsponsorsisappreciated!Inour100thyearwehaveanotherreasontocelebrate—sopleasejoinusateithertheGolf-WestTournamentinGuelphonMay28ortheGolf-EastTournamentinOttawaonJune18.

Impact on YouthInMay2014,4-HCanada launchedaPositiveYouthDevelopment(PYD)For-mula.OurPYDFormulawasdesignedwithinputfromexperts,andisour“4-Hrecipe” for building a structure that supports responsible, caring youth leaderswho are empowered to contribute to their local communities and the world atlarge,regardlessofthecluborcommunitywhereyouapplyit.Weareveryexcitedtobeintroducingastudy—incooperationwithCarletonUniversity—thatwillas-sessandarticulatethe4-Himpactwearehavingwithouryouth.4-HOntarioand4-HManitobaarepartneringwithusonthefirstphaseofthisinitiative.

IdentityFollowingadecade-longconversation,aLogoTaskForcewasformedinMay2014whichconsistedofprovincialleaders.Thegroupwasaskedtoproviderecommen-dationsonre-energizing4-H’svisual identityinCanada.Honouring4-H’scorevalues, respecting our heritage and evolving the logo to match our youth audi-ence were key considerations in the decision-making process. We all know the4-HbrandinCanadaismuchmorethanaclover—it’saboutthelegacyandheri-tagethatcomeswith100yearsofimportantworkwithyouth.ThankyoutotheOntarioleadershipforadvocatingandcontributingtothisprocessbecauseitwasvaluableinmovingforward.

Followingthatexhaustiveprocess,theBoardofDirectorshasnowapproveda

refreshed4-HCanadalogo.There-energizedbrandwillbeunveiledatthe20154-HCanadaAnnualGeneralMeetingonJune11inFredericton,NB.Thiswillbeahistoricmomentfor4-HinCanada.Strengtheningandaligningthe4-HbrandacrossCanadawillhelpusmoreclearlyarticulateourroleasCanadianleadersinpositiveyouthdevelopment.Butmore importantly, itwillhelpusmaintain rel-evancewithtoday’syouth.

Leadership Excellence4-HOntarioExecutiveDirectorDebraBrownandIhadtheprivilegeofbeingpartofaCanadiandelegationthatparticipatedintheinauguralGlobal4-HNetworkSummitinSeoul,KorealastOctober.Wesawfirst-handhow4-Hextendsbeyondourboundariesand is trulyaworldwidemovement.Canadahasbeenhonouredwiththeprivilegeofhostingthe2ndGlobal4-HNetworkSummitin2017.Welookforwardtoworkingwithprovincesonthisexcitinginitiativebecauseitwillshow-case4-HinCanadatotheworld.
