AgDiscovery 2016 Who: High school students, age 15-17
What: Iowa's AgDiscovery program helps teenagers learn
about careers in Veterinary Medicine, Animal Science,
Laboratory Technology and Wildlife Ecology. Students live
on the Iowa State University campus and learn from
university professors, scientists who work for the U.S.
government, and local agricultural producers and animal
welfare and management organizations.

4-H Re-enrollment

We’re in full swing for the new 4-H year! 4-H re-enrollment will be
on 4hOnline again this year which can be done at your home or
in our office.
To re-enroll, go to the 4hOnline website: https://
iowa.4honline.com and use your email address and password to
login.
This is where 4-H and Clover Kids re-enroll.
If your Clover Kid is now the age to be in 4-H, make sure to
change their club from the Clover Kid group to the 4-H club.
Be sure to update all health information for the current time and
check all of the appropriate releases (driving, photo, etc.).
Enrollment cost is now $30 per 4-H’er.

Citizenship Washington Focus Looking for an experience of a lifetime? Look no further than the
Citizenship Washington Focus trip where you, as a 9th-12th
grader, can travel by charter bus to visit Washington D.C. and the
National 4-H Center. Experience leadership and citizenship on a
higher level with this epic opportunity on June 10-18, 2016.
Trip highlights include the Flight 93 Museum, Gettysburg
Battlefield, Capitol Hill, Smithsonian Museum, Mount Vernon and
the Holocaust Museum. Youth will also meet with the Iowa
Congressional and Senate delegations to discuss legislative
issues. Besides tours and workshops, 4-H'ers will have time for
socializing and meeting new friends!
There is a scholarship available through the Marshall
County 4-H Foundation to attend CWF!
Cost of the trip is $1,570. This includes lodging, transportation,
tour site admissions and most meals. Registration and a $510
deposit will be required to secure a spot. Space is limited.
Registration deadline is January 4, 2016. To learn more about

4-H Trivia
Horse Project Christmas Party Who: 4-H Horse Enthusiast
When: Saturday, December 19 from 11 AM– 1 PM
Where: Pizza Ranch, 2305 S Center St, Marshalltown
What: Enjoy some time with the 4-H’ers, families, volunteers,
and committee members
Please RSVP by Thursday, December 10 so Erin can make sure
there is enough room.
Lunch will be provided by the Horse Committee, however, we
encourage you to bring a couple dollars to cover upcoming events.
Let’s see how much 4-H information the Marshall County 4-H’ers know! Each month we will be doing some 4-H trivia
in the newsletter. The top 2 individuals that answer the most questions correct will get to pick a goodie out of our “4-H
Shelf of Goodies!” You have until Friday, December 18 to email, call, or stop in the office and give Emily your
answers to try to win. The next month we will include the correct answers, and new questions. Please, do not look up
the answers! Test your knowledge and have a little fun!

2. Who is the Iowa 4-H Leader?
3. How many countries have a 4-H program?
New 4-H Club - Hacks and Hounds
Erin Calkins has began a new 4-H Club that will focus on
the horse and dog projects. Along with monthly meetings,
there will be clinics, workshops, and work days for your
horses and pups!
This can be a primary or secondary club!
If you would like to join the Hacks and Hounds 4-H Club,
please contact the Extension office at 641-752-1551 for
more information and contact information for Erin, as well
as the next meeting time.
FSQA Certification FSQA certification is required for all 4-H’ers who exhibit beef,
dairy, goats, poultry, rabbits, sheep, and swine.
4-6 graders must attend a training session by
May 15, 2016.
7-12 graders may attend a training session or test out by
May 15, 2016.
Training Dates:
Tuesday, December 29, 2-4 PM at the Extension office
Thursday, April 14, 2015, 6-8 PM at the Extension office
Testing Guidelines:
7-8 grade 4-H’ers test will last until they are in 9th grade
9-12 grade 4-H’ers test will last until they are finished with 4-H.
Testing can be done by appointment or after either training date, in
the last 15 minutes.

Beef Bits
Canned Good Drive The 4-H County Council is once again hosting a
canned good drive to be donated to the House of
Compassion in Marshalltown. If every 4-H’er donated
just ONE canned item, we could donate over 200
items!
Currently, they are in need of cleaning supplies, baby
formula, paper products, and canned goods.
Bring your items to the Extension office before
December 18.
This is a great way to begin the 4-H year with a
citizenship project!
Please make sure all goods have current dates on
them.
Fall is here and hopefully you are all out on the hunt for your next beef project or, maybe you raised your project and are working on the
breaking process. Either way, best of luck for the coming year!
Market Beef Weigh-in is Saturday, December 19 from 8:00-11:30 AM at the fairgrounds. All market steers and market heifers MUST be
weighed in. If you have a bred steer, please have your paperwork completed by then. Information needed
includes: sire name, sire registration number, and steers tattoo. If you have any questions, contact
someone from the beef committee!
In the event of bad weather, please listen to KXIA and KFJB radio.

3rd Annual Clover 5K Run/Walk Mark your calendars for the 3rd Annual Clover 5K Run/Walk on
Saturday, April 23, 2016. This is a 5K Clover Run/Walk that will
help raise money for our Marshall County 4-H youth scholarships,
youth development, and activities. Be a Sponsor! Sponsorship can
be in any of the following ways:

Items for runner goody bags (key chains, pens, etc.)

Each year in rural Iowa, there is a grain
related accident. When the Gilman
Rustlers 4-H Club heard this, they
wanted to do something about it. Over
the last year, they set out to raise funds
for the Gilman Fire Department to
purchase some life saving equipment.
Over $8,300 later, the Gilman Rustlers
accomplished their goal! The new
equipment includes a grain rescue
tube, grain auger system, safety
harness, carabiners, descender
pulleys, rope, and a basket stretcher!
Way to go Gilman Rustlers!
