Purchase/Student Use Program

As a means to provide every incoming freshman with the ability to use a Notebook throughout their high school career, Lincolnwood High School has developed two plans to allow parents/guardians a choice of ownership of the device.

Purchase Program

A parent/guardian may choose to rent-to-own a Notebook. This program allows the parent/guardian to pay a rental fee of $75 per year over each year of your student’s four year high school career. Once you make your fourth $75 payment in full, you will completely own your Notebook. School policy and regulations still apply to the Notebook until graduation.

Student Use Program

If a parent chooses not to purchase, the student rental use fee is part of the yearly book rental fees paid for each student at registration. A parent/guardian may choose to rent a Notebook each year of their student’s high school career.

If you decide to rent the Notebook for your student, it will remain the property of Lincolnwood High School for throughout their high school career and after graduation.

If you ever would decide you would like to participate in the Purchase program you would just be responsible for paying the difference of what you have already paid to upgrade to the Purchase option.

With either of these options (Rent or Purchase Program) your student will:

Receive the same Notebook each fall when they return to school.

Be allowed to take their Notebook home with them in the evening to complete homework.

Be required to turn in their Notebook over the Winter break and end of school each year.

Term of Agreement Your right to use and possession of the property terminates not later than the last day of the school year unless earlier terminated by the District or upon withdrawal from the District. All Notebooks will be turned in on the last day of finals before winter break begins and by the last day of student attendance before summer.

Using a Notebook at School

Notebooks are intended for use at school each day. In addition to teacher expectations for the Notebook use, school messages, announcements, calendars, and schedules may be accessed using the Notebook. Students are responsible for bringing their Notebook to all classes unless specifically instructed not to do so by a teacher. Students will be instructed by the teacher when and how the Notebook will be used in that teacher’s class.

Notebooks Left at Home If a student leaves the Notebook at home, a limited number of “loaner” devices may be made available to check out. The student is responsible for getting the coursework completed as if the Notebook were present.

Notebook Undergoing Repair Loaner Notebooks may be issued to students when their Notebooks are being repaired by the school. A limited number of “loaner” Notebooks are available so having a “loaner” is not guaranteed. Exceptions to this practice will be based upon whether the Notebook requires routine maintenance and repairs or was damaged due to negligence or abuse.

Charging a Notebook Battery a. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that Notebooks are fully charged for each school day. b. Repeated violations (a minimum of 3 days) of this procedure will result in students being required to “check-in/checkout” their Notebook from the office staff every day for two weeks. c. In cases where the battery does “run out”, students may be able to connect their Notebook to a power outlet in class.

Screensavers/Background photos a. While personalized screensavers or backgrounds are permitted, inappropriate or provocative images including but not limited to pornographic images, guns, weapons, inappropriate language, threatening language, drug, alcohol, or gang related images are not permitted and will subject the student to disciplinary action.

Sound, Music, Games, Software/Apps a. Sound must be muted at all times unless permission is obtained from the teacher for instructional purposes. b. Lincolnwood High School students are encouraged to provide their own headsets/earbuds. Headsets with microphones are encouraged to allow students to record

Page 8: 4 C’ing the Future · 4‐C’ing the Future: The Lincolnwood Way One-to-One Initiative With the implementation of its “4 C’ing the Future” initiative, Lincolnwood will begin

presentations on the Notebook without interference from background noise. c. Music is only allowed on the Notebook at the discretion of the teacher. Students will not be able to use Youtube as a music source (This is an issue with bandwidth). d. All software/apps will be provided by the district. Data storage will be through apps on the Notebook, i.e., Notepad, network storage, etc. e. Internet games other than those assigned by the student’s teacher are not allowed on the Lincolnwood High School Notebooks.

Legal Propriety a. Comply with trademark and copyright laws and all license agreements. Ignorance of the law is not immunity. If you are unsure, ask the technology support staff. b. Plagiarism is a violation of the Lincolnwood High School Handbook. Give credit to all sources used, whether quoted or summarized. This includes all forms of media on the internet, such as graphics, movies, music, and text. c. Use or possession of hacking software is strictly prohibited and violators will be subject to Lincolnwood High School discipline.

**Violation of applicable state or federal law may result in criminal prosecution.

Printing a. Students will be given information and instruction on printing with the Notebook at school.

Home Internet Access and Internet Filtering Policy Lincolnwood High School will install internet filtering on the Network that meets the federally regulated Child Internet Protection Act.

Although the district does make every effort to block inappropriate material on school systems, it's important for parents/guardians to monitor activity on their child’s electronic devices and understand that nothing is foolproof. We recommend that parents/guardians take an active role to view what content students are viewing on Notebooks outside the classroom setting. Students removing filtering software and/or bypassing filtering (proxy redirectors, etc.) will be disciplined in accordance with Student Handbook. Each student is responsible for the content viewed on their Notebook.

The Notebook comes equipped with both camera and video capacities. The cameras on the Notebooks will be disabled unless a teacher requests their use for a specific class assignment. Attempting to enable the camera is a violation of this agreement and will result in administrative action. Students are prohibited from taking or “tagging” any class photos without permission of the teacher. Cameras may never be used in a locker room or restroom per the student handbook or for taking inappropriate photos and/or videos.

Network Connectivity Lincolnwood High School makes no guarantee that the district's network will be up and running 100% of the time. In the rare case that the network is down, the district will not be responsible for lost or missing data. Students are urged to back up all files to a storage applications approved by the High School.

Panhandle CUSD #2 INTERNET USAGE POLICY (K-12)

The mission of the Panhandle Community Unit #2 Computer Network/Internet Connectivity System is to enhance learning and teaching by giving users access to additional sources of information and research through electronic communication and technology, and thus, allowing for greater collaboration and dissemination of successful educational practices, methods, and materials. Panhandle Schools, while encouraging the educational use of the Internet, will make every effort to protect children from content that is obscene, pornographic, or harmful to minors. The District, while respecting the privacy of its users, reserves the right to log network use and to monitor its users. In addition, the District reserves the right to limit content that it deems “inappropriate for minors.”

Rights and Responsibilities The use of computers and the Internet will provide students access to local, national and international sources of information and collaboration vital to intellectual inquiry in today’s society. In return for this access, every user has the responsibility to respect and protect the rights of every other user in our community and on the Internet. The Internet is part of the curriculum and is not a public forum. Users agree to respect copyright laws, including trademark and/or license restrictions when downloading, archiving, distributing or sharing any software or digital files. A Panhandle network computer account with password accessibility will be given to each student yearly for school use. Students should keep the password private and are responsible for all activity on the network accessed through their passwords. Account holders are expected to act in a responsible, ethical and legal manner, in accordance with the Panhandle Internet Code of Conduct, the missions and purposes of the other computer networks they use school wide and on the Internet and the laws of the State and the United States. The District shall not be responsible for any unauthorized charges or fees resulting from access to the Internet. Each District computer shall access the Internet through a filtering device that blocks entry to visual depictions that are (1) obscene, (2) pornographic, or (3) considered harmful or inappropriate for students, as defined by the Children’s Internet Protection Act and as determined by the Superintendent or Superintendent ‘s designee. Panhandle Internet Code of Conduct This Internet Code of Conduct applies to all users of the Panhandle network. It reads: Users will strive to act in all situations with honesty, integrity and respect for the rights of others and to help others to behave in a similar fashion. Users agree to follow school and network policies in regard to the access, usage, and content rules as put forth in the Panhandle Computer Use/Internet Policy Statement. Access Access to the Internet within the Panhandle District is a privilege and not a right and any inappropriate use will result in cancellation of those privileges. Building principals will act as “system administrators” for their buildings and will deem what is inappropriate use with their decisions being final. The system administrator may close the access of any user at any time as required. Teachers or other staff may request that system administrator deny, revoke, or suspend specific user accounts at any time for cause. Appeals regarding cancellations can be made through the building administrator.

Page 14: 4 C’ing the Future · 4‐C’ing the Future: The Lincolnwood Way One-to-One Initiative With the implementation of its “4 C’ing the Future” initiative, Lincolnwood will begin

Sanctions Violations of the rules will result in a temporary or permanent ban on computer/internet use. Disciplinary action may include restriction of a student’s computer use in the labs as well as his/her classroom use depending on the type and severity of the infraction. The building principal will be notified of any infraction for further disciplinary actions per the Student Handbook and Board of Education policy. When applicable, police or local authorities may become involved. Usage Guidelines The Internet account holder/computer user is held responsible for his/her actions and activity within his/her account. Unacceptable use of the network/school computers will result in the suspension or revoking of these privileges. Account holder will not use the network/computers for any illegal activity, including violation of copyright or other contracts nor for plagiarizing the works of others. If a user mistakenly access inappropriate information, he/she should immediately inform a teacher or staff member. This will protect the student against a claim that he/she intentionally violated this policy. The Acceptable Use Policy does not attempt to state all required or proscribed behavior by users. However some specific examples are provided. Students will agree to the following conditions:

1. I will not use the computer/Internet system for financial or commercial gain or for any non-school related activities.

2. I will not degrade or disrupt school equipment, software or system performances and will not wastefully use finite resources.
