While they’re at it, educators say all parents of school-age children should also plan for preventing the dreaded “summer slide,” or information and skills children forget during summer break from the end of one school year to the beginning of the next. The education slide is well-documented by numerous studies, which were synthesized in the 1990s by Harris Cooper, then a professor at the University of Missouri- Columbia. He found that children could forget one to three months of learning over the summer. Also, children tend to gain weight more rapidly when they’re out of school, according to a 2007 study by Paul Von Hippel of Ohio State University. Kids, especially those at risk for obesity, gain as much weight during the summer as they do all school year. DOE, FORMER EDITOR, CUMBERLAND NEWS }ITime toMulchOur columnist has had much to learn about mulch. They say the only things certainin life are death and taxes. Well, that may be true for city folkbut Ive discovered that theother certainty in lifeespecially in south-ern New Jerseyis mulch.Thats been both a revelation and arude awakening for me. Growing up in thecity and then, when I first moved here, having a lawn service, I just never hadoccasion to bother with mulch. As a matter of fact, before I moved hereI probably thought mulch was somethingthat vegetarians ate as a snack. You know, like muesli. Not that theresanything wrong with that.My time here in southern New Jerseyhas opened up whole new worlds for me.Admittedly, most of those new worlds hadto do with food. For instance, I had never tasted gnoc-chi and probably would have thoughtbased simply on the namethat it wassome type of bacterial infection. But thats a column for another day.Back to the mulch. My first brush with mulch actually wasmore of a brush fire.I was visiting my then girlfriend/nowwife at her home in East Vineland. It was a lazy summer day, hot as thedickens, and we were sitting on her backdeck enjoying a beverage.I asked if she minded if I smoked acigar and she said no problem as long aswe stayed outside. She even brought meout some of those wooden kitchen match-es to light up.A devout non-smoker, she didnt havean ashtray so she went inside to findsomething I could use. Once lit up, Iflipped the match into the flowerbed nextto the deck. Then, we were just sitting and talkingwhen I smelled smoke. In a second shecould smell it, too.Since it was 90 degrees in the shade andnobody in their right mind would be burn-ing wood, we looked around for the source.Turned out to be smoldering mulch.Well, mulch and I got off to a bad startand it hasnt gotten any better.Every year we buy anywhere from 20to 40 bags of the stuff and every year itdisappears. Last year, my wife decided itwould save us money if we ordered it bythe truckload. That didnt sound right to me, but Im acity boy and still defer to her on all mat-ters regarding the great outdoors. A day orso later, one of those big sand and graveltrucks pulled into the yard.Where do you want it, the driverasked.I didnt order a truck, was my reply.Turns out my wife had ordered us acouple of yards (is that the correct termi-nology?) of high-grade mulch.Well, of course, she wasnt home and(horrors) hadnt left instructions on thebest place to put it.The guy was getting impatient so I hadhim just dump it next to the house.Well, as it turns out, there is no bestplace to put a mountain of mulch. And, asmy wife pointed out to me, if there were itcertainly wouldnt be next to the house. So, I hitched up the wagon to the rid-ing mower and went into the mulch busi-ness for the next couple of days. I have toadmit that the yard did look nice when Iwas (finally) done moving mulch. This year we went back to the tried, true and costly bag method. She was on alittle mini-vacation between Palm Sundayand Easter and I was left with instructionsto do the mulch. When she came home I proudlyshowed her what I had accomplished. We need more mulch. And right there you have my problemwith mulch.I think it was Gloria Vanderbilt whoonce famously said, You cant be too richor too thin. If shed been living in south-ern New Jersey, she almost for sure wouldhave added, or have too much mulch. There is just no such thing as too muchmulch. No matter how much Ive spreador raked or patted into perfect moundsaround the bushes, its never enough.Every year, I finally put my foot down(being careful to avoid the mulch) anddeclare no more mulch. My wife just smiles and nods her head.Shes a South Jersey girl. She knows.Next year well need more mulch.I1 Next Stop: The MajorsMillvilles Mike Trout may move upto the Angels by mid-season.RYAN DINGER1 Summer Camps,Activities3, 4 Faces in the News6, 7 In Our Schools9 Prizeweek Puzzle10 Keep it Local WednesdaysMain St. Vineland focuses onsmaller, retail-oriented promotions.TODD NOON11 Not To Be RailroadedLandis was not deterred bychallenges in building a rail line toSea Isle. The praisecomes in heaps. It is not all empty buzz, however. Theimpetus for such lofty comparisons isTrouts play on the field. Since 2009, hehas played minor league baseball on fiveseparate levels, rapidly climbing the ranksto Triple-A, where he opened 2012 withthe Salt Lake Bees, the Angels minorleague affiliate. In that time, hes hit a com-bined .341 with 23 home runs, 132 RBI, and108 stolen bases over 284 games. Hes post-ed an impressive .938 OPS (on-base per-centage plus slugging). His performanceon the field begets the approbation. But with the accolades comes raisedexpectations. The comparison to MickeyMantle is probably an unfair weight to puton the shoulders of a 20-year-old, but itexists nonetheless, and it places pressureon Trout to perform. Its the kind of pres-sure that could crush even a fortitudinousindividual. This is where Trout breaks away fromthe mold. He exudes confidence and com-posure. When asked about the expecta-tions surrounding him, Trout is able tobrush the question aside with the aplombof a man many years his senior. What people say about me, its great. Its humbling, said Trout during a recentphone call from the Salt Lake Bees facility. But when you get out there on the field, you just have to go out and play, and do thethings youve been doing since you were akid. You have to leave that stuff behindyou, have some fun, and focus on playing.Trout seems to be able to adopt tunnelvision when it comes to blocking out whatpeople are saying about him. This type ofmaturity is just another accoutrement tohis already loaded tool belt.In the game, this type of thing is whatsknown as an intangiblesomething a play-er possesses naturally and cant be taught. His wealth of baseball knowledge isanother intangible. These intangibles, more than hisincredible talent, are why the Angels haveTrout on the fast track to the big leagues.Last year, when most ballplayers his ageare still toiling in Single A, Trout wasmaking his MLB debut at 19, starting inplace of the injured Peter Bourjos on July8. He would appear in 40 games for theAngels in 2011, starting 32 of them.It was a learning experience he relished.Getting the experience was importantfor me, said Trout. When I got called up,I didnt really know what to expect. Sogoing up there, I got a chance to see whatit is like. TheAngels were playing the Orioles inthe final game of a series inBaltimore. The citys proximity toSouth Jersey allowed hundreds oflocals, including Trouts parents, other family members, and friendsto make the two-hour trek downI-95 to see him play. After going 0-for-2 in his firsttwo at-bats, Trout stepped to theplate to face Mark Worrell in the7th inning. On a 3-1 pitch, Worrellthrew Trout a fastball over theheart of the plate. Trout turned onit, sending the pitch deep into theseats at Camden Yards for his firstMajor League home run. In thestands, hundreds of people, manyof them wearing Angels t-shirtswith Trouts number 27 on it,jumped up and down with excite-ment as Trout circled the bases.Hitting your first major leaguehome run is something that willalways be remembered, but to do itin front of so many people whowere there to support him madethe experience especially memo-rable for Trout. It was unreal for me, saidTrout. A lot of times, when my par-ents come out to see me, I dont doas well because Im pressing, tryingto do something for them. When Ihit that ball, I knew I hit it good, and it got into the seats. It wasexciting. Afterwards, everyone wasjoking that thats the fastest theyveever seen anyone run around thebases after a home run. Just tohave my family and friends see itlike that, its a great feeling. RDMike TroutContinued from previous pageknowing where I have to be, it helps megoing forward in my career.Like a lot of players, Trout struggled inhis first stint in the big leagues, experienc-ing the growing pains that come withbeing a young player learning the game onthe Major League level. He hit just .220 in123 at-bats. But the sample size is small, and the story of a young ballplayer scuf-fling before becoming a star is one thatsbeen told countless times. Even the greatMickey Mantle, to whom Trout so oftendraws comparisons, was not immune tostruggles early in his career. In his rookie season in 1951, the Mickhit just .259 through his first 60 games.Hed go on to bat .298 for his career, with536 home runs. To say Trout will do thesame would be too assumptive, but it doesindicate that even some of the best playersof all time got off to slow starts. What Trout got out of his first bigleague experience was an understandingabout how he needs to approach his at-bats. The term quality at-bats came upsix times during our brief discussion. Hefeels he struggled the way he did in 2011because he was giving away too many at-batsswinging too early in the count andnot working himself into hitters counts.I know whats up there now, and Imtrying my hardest to get back there, hesaid. Last year, I gave away way too manyABs. For me, its about trying to get qualityABs this year.Trouts performance so far this year atTriple-A Salt Lake suggests hes gettingplenty of quality at-bats this time around.Hes hitting an even .400 with an eye-pop-ping 1.063 OPS so far this season, the bestnumbers hes posted on any level to date. His success has many talking heads sug-gesting that it would behoove the Angelsto call him up to the big leagues now. When asked about this, Trout once againinvokes his tunnel vision.I follow the Angels and of course Ihear what people are saying. But I try tostay focused on my goals. My goal [inTriple-A] is to win a championship. If Iget called up, I get called up. But I cantworry about when thats going to be orwhat theyre saying about me, he said.Trout is quick to use the word ifregarding his potential recall to theMajors. But for many, it is not a question ofif, but of when. For now, hes waiting in thewings of the Angels farm system, focusingon getting better every day. His moment iscoming. Its essentially a foregone conclu-sion that hell get a long look in the Majorsat some point. By most accounts, it will besometime this year. This time, he hopes tobe better prepared. We willupdate these offers each week, or asoffers change. To participate in the Keep t LocalWednesdays program, you need only a freediscount card (which you can obtain fromany participating business or by contactingMain Street Vineland at 856-794-8653.The Keep It local Wednesday cam-paign will kick off on April 25 with aName Your Own Price promotion ongreat food at Lucianos FreshMarket.Later in the summer, some special pro-grams and events will be worked into thecampaign, such as the popular Lunch onLandis promotion which will returnbeginning Wednesday, May 16 and willrun through May 22, with $8 lunch spe-cials at participating restaurants. Landisestablished a town, heensured its success bybuilding in a location withtrain access. The property he and RichardJ. Byrnes turned into Hammonton had arailroad running from Philadelphia toAtlantic City, which guaranteed commuterconnections to two significant destina-tions for business and pleasure. Vinelandwas no different, containing a rail linerunning from Camden to Millville. Itshighly significant that the tracks markedthe center of town and was the site wherethe stake was driven to mark the citysfounding. So a train line was necessary forSea Isle as well. The fact that there was no rail systemon or in the vicinity of Ludlams Beach, the original name of the resort location, did not deter Landis. He was aware thatthe location was ideal for tourism, as washis chief engineer H. Farrand who, in anundated letter, told Vinelands founderthat with proper railroad facilities, andlots offered at a reasonable price, I do notsee why this place should not become asgreat a resort as Atlantic CityLandis had already written of theimportance of a railway in a diary entryand, consequently, was quick to secure analliance with General William Sewell.According to Jeffery M. Dorwarts bookCape May County, New Jersey: The Makingof an American Resort Community, Sewellwas a Republican Party leader in the statebut, more importantly, a director of thePennsylvania and West Jersey Railroad.Dorwart writes that Landis and Sewellworked out a deal that led to the estab-lishment of a railroad branch line fromjust north of the South Seaville station(known as Sea Isle Junction) across themarshes to Ludlams Beach in 1882.Construction of the railway, which tookone year to complete, seems to have gonesmoothly, but that doesnt mean therewerent problems. From the start, Landisfaced a series of challenges from the railcompany. According to the South JerseyRails online site, as of September 15, 1879,West Jersey Railroad inform[ed] CharlesK. Landis that his development atLudlams Beach is not a paying propositionand that he should invest more money inimprovements, and if successful, WestJersey Railroad will build a branch there.By December 10 1880, according toChristopher T. Baers online chronology ofthe Pennsylvania Railroad, West JerseyRailroad apparently felt that the projectwas worthwhile enough to make aproposition to Landis to provide rail androlling stock for a branch to Sea Isle. However, it would be the founder whowould have to oversee the construction ofthe train line.Baer dates the beginning of constructionas May 25, 1881. Don Wentzel, writing inSouth Jersey Magazine, reports that workbegan in Woodbine and extended fivemiles across a meadow to Sea Isle City. Heidentifies that 151 tons of 40 lb. iron railand 6,160 [railroad] ties were brought intoSea Isle to Townshends Inlet a distance of2.42 miles. By January 7, 1882, Landis noti-fied West Jersey Railroad that he had grad-ed a right-of-way fromSeaville to the mead-ows and requested assistance from thecompany to complete the project throughthe meadows to his new settlement. On June 2, 1882, Baer reports, the pas-senger line from Seaville to Sea Isle Cityofficially opened. The new tracks providedwhat Landis needed to guarantee visitorsto his new town, but his work on the trainline continued. Baer writes that, on March22, 1883, Landis contacted West JerseyRailroad, saying he had built an excursionhouse at Townsends Inlet south of Sea IsleCity and built a light railroad to it.The entry continues, saying that thefounder offered a right of way the lengthof the beach and reported that heplanned on building another excursionhouse at Corsons Inlet at the north end ofSea Isle City to be done by June 1, towhich the company agree[d] to negotiatefor a railroad running the length of theisland from Corsons Inlet to TownsendsInlet. The following month, West JerseyRailroad approved the extension, butrequired Landis to build it at his expenseif the company failed to do so. Of the more than 240 utilities that participated in the SEPA survey,VMEU ranked first in the Annual Solar Watts per Customer category. The overwhelming majority of utilities listed were investor-owned utilities and, according to Vineland Municipal Utilities Director Joseph Isabella, who added that NewJerseys utilities were well represented. In the Annual Solar Watts per Customer category,VMEU had 762 solar watts and the second place utility, Rocky Mountain, Georgia, had 192solar watts per customer.Isabella said that the recognition is affirmation that the citys plan for cleaner and moreefficient energy generation and distribution is on track. When we started, Mayor [Robert]Romano and I sat down and discussed our strategy to provide reliable, low-cost energy tothe City of Vineland, Isabella stated. Most importantly, we wanted the citys MunicipalElecitric Utility to be an environmental leader and thats what this award recognizes. What makes it different is the unified will between the mayor, utility management andcity councilthis was accomplished without political infighting.Mayor Romano said that, inaddition to the citys solar powergeneration, the VMEUs new nat-ural gas-fired combustion turbinewill be operational by May 5. Thenew turbine is a more environ-mentally-friendly and economicaloption than the coal-fired gener-atiing system it replaces. The old generator contributedto the VMEU having a very differ-ent public perception than theone it enjoys today. We wereonce considered the dirty littleutility in South Jersey, saidIsabella. Now were the best littleutility in South Jersey. If we con-tinue this for a few more years,we can set the city up for 30 yearsof clean energy.Mayor Romano added that thegoal for the VMEU is to offer cus-tomers (Vineland residents) thelowest energy rates in then stateand hinted at a rate reduction in the near term.Altogether, the Top 10 utilities in SEPAs 2011 utility rankings reported adding morethan 1,000 megawatts of solar electricity capacity in 2011. Over 100 teams, from experts toyouths to seniors, swarm the state from 12midnight Friday to 12 midnight Saturdayin search of as many species of birds asthey can identify by sight or sound.Citizens United to Protect the MauriceRiver (CU) has paid an entry fee for theteam, and that fee supports NJ Audubon'smission. CU encourages you to supportthe CU Fish Hawks, with all proceedsbenefiting CU Maurice Rivers mission. The Fish Hawks are planning to find asmany species as they can within theboundaries of Cumberland County, ratherthan the entire state. They will be in pur-suit of the Limited Geographic Areaaward. So, rather than shooting for the200 or so bird species an elite team ofexperts might identify if they covered thewhole state in 24 hours, the Fish Hawkssuccess will be judged on par with thenumber of species known in CumberlandCounty, and they will be competing withother teams who attempt to find the mostspecies within the boundaries of anothercounty in New Jerseybased on the parfor that county. You can support the team by making apledge to contribute a certain amount perspecies seen, heard and otherwise identi-fied by the team. If they end up getting150 species, for example, a 10 cent pledgewould be a $15 contribution; 25 centswould be $37.50. A $1 pledge would beContinued next pageGrapevine 10-17 042512-de:Layout 1 4/23/12 8:26 PM Page 15$150. Or, you can just offer a flat amounttoward the cause.
