By Winnie Bonelli

Laced with angst and humor, Julia Louis-Dreyfus has always played real women living in complicated times. For nine seasons, she portrayed Elaine Benes, a single New York City gal basically doing “nothing” with a posse of boy pals on NBC’s “Seinfeld.” Then CBS-TV’s “The New Adventures of Old Christine” cast Louis-Dreyfus as a divorced 40-something juggling motherhood, life, and an overly involved ex-hubby.

For her follow-up act, Louis-Dreyfus steps up to the podium as hapless vice president Selina Meyer in HBO’s political comedy “Veep,” airing Sundays at 10 PM.

The series is created by Scottish political satirist Armando Iannucci (best known on America shores for his Oscar-nominated 2009 movie In the Loop), assuring a sly, lacerating undercurrent. Taking aim at the cynicism and ineptitude of America’s government leaders, “Veep” frolics in an endless marathon of screw-ups, political missteps, and humiliations. And yes, thanks to cable, Louis-Dreyfus and her colleagues get to exclaim their alarm by employing a liberal dose of “F” words.

Any similari t ies to real l i fe counterparts such as Sarah Palin or Hillary Clinton are purely coincidental, the animated actress quickly insists, “It’s not a partisan show in any way and we’re not parodying a particular person, male or female. It’s really a show about political behavior, as

Julia Louis-Dreyfus: Life After Seinfeld

opposed to politics. You can see people making wrong decisions for the right reasons, and right decisions for the wrong reasons. Nothing is black and white.”

That doesn’t mean she didn’t do her homework. To insure accuracy, the actress met with the genuine article. “I was fortunate enough to meet with a couple of vice presidents, which was pretty nifty. It was interesting to hear what they had to say, but, of course, how they said it and also what they didn’t say.”

Dreyfus realized, “It’s a very powerful position and yet at the same time, I don’t think there’s a politician out there that you would say aspired to be vice president. Their identity is entirely at the whim of the President. If the President likes you, he’ll give you power. If he doesn’t like you, he’ll take it away. The fact is you’re not in control of your own destiny.”

Since “Christine” Louis-Dreyfus, the recipient of two Primetime Emmys, a Golden Globe, five Screen Actors Guild Awards, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame has been dabbling in various projects, including the feature film Picture Paris, where she plays a divorced mother who pursues her dream trip to the City of Lights after her son leaves for college. The film hit a responsive chord; her real son Henry went off to school in September.

Born in New York City to writer Judith Bowles and her French attorney/businessman husband William Louis Dreyfus, heir to the Louis Dreyfus Group fortune, Julia’s parents divorced when she was only one. Eventually, her mother married the dean of George Washington University’s Medical School paving her move to Washington, D.C., while her formative years were spent at the all-girls Holton-Arms School in Bethesda, Maryland.

As for her alter ego, former Maryland Senator Meyer will be celebrating 20 years in D.C. during the series’ third episode and viewers get acquainted with her on-screen

daughter. And being a divorced single parent, Meyer’s boyfriend also makes the scene. Other characters from her background pop up in subsequent episodes.

For three locals, music is not only fun, but a meditation as well.

“Playing music might be one of the most peaceful moments I’ve ever experienced,” said lead singer/guitarist Kate Hirschman.

That being said, the Sag Harbor resident and her band, cheekily named The Turnaround Bitches, after the Guns and Roses song, have been together for less than a year, but are already onto what should prove to be their most rockin’ show yet.

Playing at Page at 63 Main in Sag Harbor this Friday at 10 PM, the band is set to liven up Main Street with their covers of pop, rock and punk songs spanning the last 40 years of music.

Independent / Emily Toy

The Turnaround Bitches, from left, Kate Hirschman, Tim Hoey and Jim Robbins.

Welcome To The Harbor, Bitches!

Drawing influence and inspiration from bands that run the gamut from the Ramones, the Buzzcocks, and the Misfits, to Black Sabbath, Pat Benatar and the Talking Heads, for The Bitches, which include bassist Jim Robbins and drummer Tim Hoey, both of Southampton, the goal is to be anything but ordinary.

“I think there’s a lack of variety in music nowadays,” said Hoey. “We play what we want and the people will recognize it.”

The band mates have been playing music for nearly their whole lives, with Hoey previously touring with groups throughout the U.S. and Europe.

Their punk and pop influences stem from a long-standing taste for funky yet melodic beats that are

definite crowd pleasers. Friday’s performance will include a nearly two-hour set of rock, pop and punk songs sure to rock the home of the whalers.

“There’s not a lot of this kind of music being played out here,” Robbins said. “Most bands that you see include a lot of blues, reggae and that sort of thing.”

Friday’s show marks the band’s first appearance in Sag Harbor.

“This could be considered our breakthrough performance,” Hirschman said. “It’s a notable step, it sort of adds fuel to our fire.”

To see The Turnaround Bitches, stop by Page located on Main Street in Sag Harbor this Friday night at 10. $5 cover at the door.

East Hampton resident Renee Zellweger is one of the most honored American actresses working today – and one of the highest paid. She has garnered an Academy Award (Cold Mountain), three Golden Globe Awards, three Screen Actors Guild Awards and a BAFTA Award since her 1996 breakout film, Jerry Maguire.

She is of Norwegian and Swiss descent, but was brought up in Katy, Texas – her Swiss born father was an electrical engineer who worked in the oil refinery business. She attended the University of Texas at Austin and originally took a drama class only because she needed the credits. She then

landed a role in a Coors Light Commercial and later a bit part in a horror movie. After graduating in 1991 she worked a few commercials then landed a role in Reality Bites, directed by

Ben Stiller. In 1994 she had a significant role in Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation, alongside a young, unknown actor, Matthew McConaughey. Cameron Crowe cast her in Maguire in 1996.

The diminutive Zellweger, who weighs perhaps 100 pounds made headlines when she gained 30 pounds for the title role in the film Bridget Jones Diary with Colin Firth and Hugh Grant – she was awarded with an Oscar nomination.

She has dated Jim Carrey and was married to country music star Kenny Chesney but the marriage was later annulled. When not working Zellweger sometimes drops by the Blue Parrot, the East Hampton eatery and watering

hole she co-owns with Bon Jovi, among others.

ARIES (Mar. 20 - Apr. 20) This marks the beginning of a period of true clarity. You may well discover what it is you truly want to do. Or you may find you are finally clear about the difficult choices you have been feeling the need to make. Clarity is key and don’t be surprised if you catch yourself saying ‘ah ha!’ more than once this week.

TAURUS (Apr. 20 - May 21) What you are spending your time thinking about will be the determining factor in how you are feeling on any given day or in any given moment. Know that you can control your thoughts; you can choose to think differently. Choose to get yourself out of the habit of looking at the worst possible scenario. The glass IS half full!

GEMINI (May 21 - June 22) Getting lost in your head and digging up the fears that live in the corners is really a bad idea. You cannot judge the present by the past. You are different. You have moved through your share of tough times and yet here you stand facing another day. Use your past as a reason to trust yourself and your future.

CANCER (June 22 - July 23) Time to bring the energy back to yourself. When your mind wanders to figuring out other peoples’ stuff, when you catch yourself thinking what another should or shouldn’t being doing with their lives, reel yourself in and bring your thoughts back to yourself. What is it you need in this moment?

LEO (July 23 - Aug. 23) Are you being flexible? This is not a good time to get rigid and fixed about things; going with the flow will be the better action. The energy is shifting and there is no good reason to dig your heels in or get unreasonable in your expectations of others. Lighten up and figure out how to go with things and take the best you can from them.

VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) You may find this week that you have enormous energy to get things done and make significant advances in either your career or perhaps your entire quality of life. Take full responsibility for the life you want and don’t hold back as you move toward your goals. Use your power well and know that if your intentions are honorable, you cannot fail.

LIBRA (Sept. 23 - Oct. 23) You simply have to trust. We can’t always know all the facts and details. We can’t always know exactly how everything in our lives will go; that is what faith is for. Trust yourself and have more faith in the Universe to have your best interests in mind.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23 - Nov. 22) Remember that you can detach yourself from people and situations which are costing you too much on an energy or emotional level. Mind your own energy and pay attention to your needs and give others enough space to figure things out on their own. It is often the only way some people learn.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21) Best to spend this week focused on what is working and what is bringing you joy, rather than getting lost and focused on what you think you don’t have. Focusing on what is good and pleasurable and enjoyable in

your life will create an environment for you to have more of the same. What you focus on will expand. No doubt about it.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 - Jan. 20) Choose wisely what you attach your ego to. You may be getting afraid that you can lose something that is either irrelevant, or impossible for you to lose. Only the ego knows how to get serious, so check with yourself when you feel yourself getting tense. Is it really that critical?

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 19) You must give a greater value to your feelings this week. Your mind may be playing tricks on you, so you need to allow your feelings to be the guide. Remember that you don’t always have to be doing something. There are times when doing nothing is the exactly right thing to do and this may be a week when this is the most true.

PISCES (Feb. 19 - Mar. 20) Great week to remember how strong you really are. Take time out to rejuvenate, perhaps spend some quiet time in a bath or by the water and bring your strength back. Regardless of what unfolds this week, you have nothing to worry about. You ARE strong enough and you will absolutely survive.

NOTE: If you were born at the end or beginning of a sign, read the sign before or after your birthday.

Ingredients (serves 4)2 lbs mussels (washed and beards

removed)2 c ground sausage (cooked)

10 oz bag of spinach1/4 c parsley (chopped)

1/2 c of calamari tubes cut into rings

1 carrot1 large white onion

1 tbsp crushed red pepper1 cup white wine

Linguini With Sausage Mussels & Squid In A Saffron Garlic Broth

1 tbsp saffron1/2 c garlic cloves

2 oz canola oil3 tbsp butter

1 lb dried linguini pastasalt and pepper to taste

MethodStart by cooking your ground

sausage in a sauté pan with a little bit of water. While this is happening you can clean and remove the beards from the mussels and cut the calamari into rings.

Once the sausage is cooked set all of the prepared proteins in the fridge for later. Start the garlic and saffron sauce by sautéing the

chopped onion, carrot, and garlic in a saucepot with bit of oil over medium heat. Add the saffron and deglaze the pan with white wine.

Add 1/2 gallon of water, bring to a boil, and simmer for 30 minutes. At the end of that 30 minutes blend the mixture on high until smooth.

Begin to assemble the dish. To start bring a pot of water to a boil and add the linguini stirring it occasionally. While the pasta cooks heat a large sauté pan add the oil and crisp up the cooked sausage. Once it has browned nicely deglaze the pot with the garlic saffron broth and add the mussels and squid. Cover with a sheet pan for two minutes and allow the broth to reduce on high heat.

Once the mussels open add sp inach,

chopped parsley, red pepper flakes, and butter. Stir and continue to reduce until a desired consistency is reached. This process should take about 10 minutes and the pasta should be done. Strain the pasta and cook it in the sauce for another minute or two so it can absorb the flavors. Plate and enjoy.

The Raven (R ) We love John Cusack, and we figured he’d be wonderful playing Edgar Allen Poe. Actually, he’s not that bad, but this bloody tale, courtesy of director James McTeigue, has the makings of a serious bomb.

New In Theaters D a r l i n g

C o m p a n i o n (PG-13) Usually a movie by the director Lawrence Kasdan promises to be enjoyable and sometimes (The Big Chill, Accidental Tourist) downright brilliant. And Diane Keaton and Kevin Kline are always good, right? Wrong. This is one of those dog movies where-in the bedraggled animal gets all the good scenes and the human actors come off like plastic people. Elisabeth Moss, Dianne Weist, and Mark Duplass are among the co-stars who go down with the script.

Impossible Ghost Protocol If you want to know why Tom Cruise gets the big bucks, this is Exhibit A. In this MI episode h i s c h a r a c t e r , Ethan Hunt, goes undercover after the IMF is shut down. His mission: clear the good name of his team. It rocks, a mesmerizing action ride so intense it deserved consideration for the best Picture Oscar.

Now PlayingMarley (PG-13) No, not the one

with Jen and the dog. This is Kevin

Macdonald’s documentary about the real Marley, the reggae music icon. It was made with the approval of his family so it is a loving portrait indeed. Add a star if you are into the spleef, mon.

The Three Stooges (PG-13) We hated these moronic idiots when we watched them as children, and we hate them anew after watching this loser courtesy of Bobby and Peter Farrelly. Sean Hayes does his best as Larry, Chris Diamantopoulos dies in the Mo role and Will Sasso gets the most obnoxious Stooge, Curley, and makes him ever dumber than he used to be. What was Jane Lynch thinking when she agreed to take the Mother

Superior role? And Jennifer Hudson – you can sing girl; you don’t need this kind of flop on your resume.
