A large meeting of.the Old Line Whigs of the parish of Ascension and others favorable to the elec- tion of Fillmore and Danelson, was held at the Court House in Donaldsonville, on Sunday the 7th of September. The meeting was called to order-by Octave Termio, Esq., who nominated the following officers P-resident--Dlr. Edward Duffel. Vice-Preridentls-Dr.- G. A. Franklin, Ferdinard Terrio, P. G.Dannequin, lianoel Fuentes, William Hatkimon. Secretaries--Fredrick Thompson, Felix Yleynaod. fThe President,-upion taking the chair, addressed the meeting at considerable length ; he reviewed the cbhara cterof the several candidates for the Presidency, and warmly eulogized the firmness and patriotism of Millard Fillmore, and called upon all the Old Line Whigs of the parish to rally to his, support as the onily truey national candoidate before the people. His remarks were frequently interrepted by the most en- thosiastic applause from the crowd. H. L. Duffel, Esq., moved that the President ap- point a committee of seven to draft resolutions ex- pressive of the sense of the meeting. Were appointed of said committee, Ziessra. H. L. Duffel, Lestang Fortier, J. H. Parks, Prosper Landry, Phillippe Landry, H. A. Maurin and Pierre Cire. After a short absence the committee returned, and throuogh their chairman, H. L. Dffel, Esq., reported the following resolutions, which were unanimously adopted with the utmost enthusiasm : Resolved, That the Old Line Whigs cannot look with indifference on the present crisis in our national aftairs, in which is involved the very existence of the nion ; but true to their conservative principles, they feel it to be their imperative duty, whilst the other political parties are marshalling their forces for the campaign, to enter once more the lists, and, animated by that paltriotism which heretofore has never wavered, to battle again for the preservation of home, of country, atld of the Union. Resolved, That having looked fairly at the circum- stances that surround us, and having candidly ex- amined the merits of the candidatesbefore the people, and the probable consequences of the election of either, we are honestly convinced that the integrity of the Union demands the election of MillardFillmore, of the man "who knows no North as aacinst the Sooth, and no South as against the North.i Resolved, That we believe that an administration established opon the Cincinnati platform would per- petuate interoal agitation, endanger an amicable re- latio with foreign powers, confirm the odious squatter sovereignty, thus giving a right to aliens, not natur- alized to vote, and consequently to make fhee States of all our Territories. Resolved, That we cannot support James Bu- chanan, wiro approves tile policy of the present ad- ministratiou, who stands opposed to the inlernal im- provement ofthe country by the national government and other cherished measures of our party, and that besides, it is repugnant to our feelings as Whigs to sustain tile calumiator of that spotless patriot and noblest of men, letry Clay. Resolved, That we recognize a dishonest effort on the part of the Democrats of Ascension to advance the cause of their lpaty by an outrageous violation of truth, and a meaot slanuderous misrepresentation of facts in relation to the nomination of Fillmore. Tlhat the vehemence ofthe Rlepublican organs against the illus- trious statesman, and the recklessness with which they assail him, on accoant of his bold and manly stand against Freesoilism, almply refute without furother proof the ungeneroos assertion that he was nomi- nated by abolitionists. Rerolved, Tllhat in the present dangerous state 'o thie cmotry on the slavery question, it becomes our' duty as true citizens to co-opeate in the election of a ltr-ied and faitlihful nmgistate. That in Millard Fill- mome we recognize an enlightened statesmaon and a pore patriot-a public servant who has lroved honest and capable, devoted to the Union, and during agita- tion and sectiosal strife, firm und impartial in the discharge of his duties. Resohled, That the administration of MIillaed Fill- mole and lis late Albany and Rochester speeches stamp him a Union man, and as such we rally with one accord to hts support. With strong heart and loud proclaim, we once more fling to the winds the prood banner of our party--of that party, lwhich, altboogh at times defeated, was never dishonored or crushed, and whilst trissmphont was not corropted-- and we pledge oureelven to do battle for billiard Fill- morce nd Doselsoo, ansd owe call opsn our brethsren to join us in the holy works of preserving our libertico and of pcrlpctuatinug the Unoin. Some where the eagle builds her nest,Where man has never trod,

Where even the chamois dare not restUpon the Orumbling sod-

Yes, there, even there, wild flow'rets growIn richest dress arrayed,

And o'er the clamorous eaglets throwTheir light and graceful shade.

Mid mountains of perjitual snow,By icy girdles hebnd

Some rendered doubly beauteous, glov,And deck the frozen ground.

Great Gathering In Asnension.

A large meeting of.the Old Line Whigs of theparish of Ascension and others favorable to the elec-tion of Fillmore and Danelson, was held at the CourtHouse in Donaldsonville, on Sunday the 7th ofSeptember.

The meeting was called to order-by Octave Termio,Esq., who nominated the following officers

P-resident--Dlr. Edward Duffel.Vice-Preridentls-Dr.- G. A. Franklin, Ferdinard

Terrio, P. G. Dannequin, lianoel Fuentes, WilliamHatkimon.

Secretaries--Fredrick Thompson, Felix Yleynaod.fThe President,-upion taking the chair, addressed

the meeting at considerable length ; he reviewed thecbhara cterof the several candidates for the Presidency, and warmly eulogized the firmness and patriotism ofMillard Fillmore, and called upon all the Old LineWhigs of the parish to rally to his, support as theonily truey national candoidate before the people. Hisremarks were frequently interrepted by the most en-thosiastic applause from the crowd.

H. L. Duffel, Esq., moved that the President ap-point a committee of seven to draft resolutions ex-pressive of the sense of the meeting.

Were appointed of said committee, Ziessra. H. L.Duffel, Lestang Fortier, J. H. Parks, Prosper Landry,Phillippe Landry, H. A. Maurin and Pierre Cire.

After a short absence the committee returned, andthrouogh their chairman, H. L. Dffel, Esq., reportedthe following resolutions, which were unanimouslyadopted with the utmost enthusiasm :

Resolved, That the Old Line Whigs cannot lookwith indifference on the present crisis in our nationalaftairs, in which is involved the very existence of the

nion ; but true to their conservative principles, theyfeel it to be their imperative duty, whilst the otherpolitical parties are marshalling their forces for thecampaign, to enter once more the lists, and, animatedby that paltriotism which heretofore has never wavered,to battle again for the preservation of home, ofcountry, atld of the Union.

Resolved, That having looked fairly at the circum-stances that surround us, and having candidly ex-amined the merits of the candidates before the people, and the probable consequences of the election ofeither, we are honestly convinced that the integrityof the Union demands the election of Millard Fillmore,of the man "who knows no North as aacinst theSooth, and no South as against the North.i

Resolved, That we believe that an administrationestablished opon the Cincinnati platform would per-petuate interoal agitation, endanger an amicable re-latio with foreign powers, confirm the odious squattersovereignty, thus giving a right to aliens, not natur-alized to vote, and consequently to make fhee Statesof all our Territories.

Resolved, That we cannot support James Bu-chanan, wiro approves tile policy of the present ad-ministratiou, who stands opposed to the inlernal im-provement of the country by the national governmentand other cherished measures of our party, and thatbesides, it is repugnant to our feelings as Whigs tosustain tile calumiator of that spotless patriot andnoblest of men, letry Clay.

Resolved, That we recognize a dishonest effort onthe part of the Democrats of Ascension to advancethe cause of their lpaty by an outrageous violation oftruth, and a meaot slanuderous misrepresentation of factsin relation to the nomination of Fillmore. Tlhat thevehemence of the Rlepublican organs against the illus-trious statesman, and the recklessness with whichthey assail him, on accoant of his bold and manlystand against Freesoilism, almply refute without furotherproof the ungeneroos assertion that he was nomi-nated by abolitionists.

Rerolved, Tllhat in the present dangerous state 'othie cmotry on the slavery question, it becomes our'duty as true citizens to co-opeate in the election of altr-ied and faitlihful nmgistate. That in Millard Fill-mome we recognize an enlightened statesmaon and apore patriot-a public servant who has lroved honestand capable, devoted to the Union, and during agita-tion and sectiosal strife, firm und impartial in thedischarge of his duties.

Resohled, That the administration of MIillaed Fill-mole and lis late Albany and Rochester speechesstamp him a Union man, and as such we rally withone accord to hts support. With strong heart andloud proclaim, we once more fling to the winds theprood banner of our party--of that party, lwhich, altboogh at times defeated, was never dishonored orcrushed, and whilst trissmphont was not corropted--and we pledge oureelven to do battle for billiard Fill-morce nd Doselsoo, ansd owe call opsn our brethsren tojoin us in the holy works of preserving our liberticoand of pcrlpctuatinug the Unoin.

A NIGoGE MILITARY COMIPANY AT NE)rORT.-The Newport correspondent of the Baltimore Sun, ina letter to that paper under date of the 5th inst., aftermentioning the visit made to that port by the U. S.Practice ship Plymouth, has the following :

The Plymouth is not the only strange visitor wehave had within the last four days, for yesterday asteamer from Providence brought to our city an or-ganized and armed military company composed en-tirely of negroes, headed by a band of white mnsi-cians. This is somethig new, that an armed compa-ny of this character has been allowed in our midst, and the day is rolling around when we shall havecause to regret it. I learn also that this "turn-out"was tocetlebrate the anniversary of the insurrectionof the blacks of Hayti; when the whole white poplla-tion Waes massacred or had to fly fortheirlives. What
