For the past several months we have been hearing a lot about walls and their importance around our

southern border. All of us know the purpose of a wall is to keep people out, thereby keeping the

people behind the wall relatively safe. But some of us are old enough to remember that a wall can be

a bad thing, like the infamous Berlin Wall, that not only kept people out but those behind the wall were

virtual prisoners. In that instance the wall became evil and eventually it was torn down.

So then what does “wall” have to do with us and Lent? Have we built a wall around us that prevents

others from coming to us and possibly excluding God? Have we become a prisoner of that wall? Lent

is about tearing down walls. Let us look at the wall that Jesus was tearing down in today’s gospel.

The temple was a holy place and the religious leaders turned it into a market place. So Jesus reacted to purify it. When we

pray, do we already have in mind the answer that we expect God should give us? That is also a wall. With that wall, do we

think that we have made God work for us instead of vice versa? Do we have certain attitudes towards our neighbors, other

family members and friends that are judgmental; especially our reaction to certain news stories that we hear?

If we are behind our wall, do we think we are safe - even from God? If so, let us then listen to Psalm 139: “Where can I go

from your spirit? From your presence where can I flee? If I go up to the heavens, you are there, if I sink to the nether world,

you are present there. If I take the wings of the dawn, if I settle at the farthest limits of the sea, even there your hand shall

guide me and your right hand hold me fast.” God is indeed with us and a wall cannot prevent him from being with us.

So then, let us with the remainder of the Lenten season chip away at the walls that we have built around us and turn them

into a smooth highway that leads to us like Mary sitting at the feet of Jesus listening to his every word. Let us be like all the

prophets and the disciples and say, “Here I am Lord; I am listening to your word.”

To those who came to enjoy the Chicken and Biscuit dinner last Saturday, thank you for supporting St. Bernard’s fundraiser.

A special thank you to Paul Curcio and his hard working crew.

God Bless, Fr. Ray

Lent is a time for prayer and fasting. It is a season of spir-itual preparation in which we remember Christ’s tempta-tion, suffering, and death. Historically, the church has cel-ebrated Lent as a 40-day period beginning on Ash Wednesday and concluding the day before Easter. It is observed in many Christian churches as a time to com-memorate the last week of Jesus’ life, his suffering (Passion), and his death, through various observances and services of worship. Many Christians use the 40 days of Lent as time to draw closer to the Lord through prayer, fasting and repentance.

The Catholic Women's Club The Catholic Women's Club The Catholic Women's Club The Catholic Women's Club of the Brad-

ford Area will meet Tuesday, March 13, at 6:30 pm, in the Fr. Leo Gallina Social Center. Following the meeting, Susan Evans, St. Bernard church member, retired English teacher, author, and ovarian cancer survivor will present the program based on her book, "Don't Write the Obituary Yet!" Susan will outline her journey of facing ovarian cancer from her diagnosis to the establishment of the Evans-Krivak Gyneco-logical Cancer Research Foundation. Light refreshments will be served. All area women are welcome.

GIVE by serving with time, talent or treasure.

“Come Holy Spirit. Fill me with your gifts so that I can serve others.” John 13:15. Re-commit to a parish ministry or try out a new one. There is one for all ages. No matter how big or small your contribution, our parish just isn’t the same without you, without us all working together! Give with treasure - “

Where your treasure is, there also lies your heart” (Matthew 6:21).

Use your offertory envelope regularly each week or set up payments through your bank or OnLine giving. Support the parish even when you’re out of town. Commit to a specific charity each week/month.

SHARE Lent.

PRAY

“Lord, quiet my soul so that I can spend time with You.”

Romans 12:12. Make Mass your top priority

on Sunday. Schedule time for daily prayer.

Pray together with family or loved ones.

Do You Want to FAST this Lent? ~ Pope Francis
