is friendly to the environment.

Goodwillie is a green school in

Ada, Michigan. Green schools do

many things to help the Earth.

Green schools use less

energy than regular schools. At

Goodwillie, solar panels use the

sun’s power. The solar power heats

the school in winter. This helps

keep energy bills low.

The school also believes in

using recycled items. Its walls and

floors are made with recycled

material. Even the outdoor deck is

made from sawdust and recycled

How did Chinese immigrants succeed despite hard times?

For much of its history, California has attracted Chinese

immigrants. Life was often hard for these newcomers. But thanks to their skills and hard work, Chinese immigrants made their mark here.

The discovery of gold in 1848 sparked a large wave of immigration. Nearly 500,000 people from around the world rushed to California with dreams of becoming rich. Among the people looking for gold were people from China. By 1851 there were25,000 Chinese people living in California.

Chinese immigrants came to the United States to seek a better life.

Have you ever heard a coyote howl at night? If you have, you may live near coyote country. These days, coyote country is nearly everywhere, but this was not always true. Coyotes used to live mostly in the Great Plains states.

How did this coyote spread occur? Each year, more and more suburban homes are built near coyote country. Since coyotes prefer open land, they roam farther away from old habitats in search of it. Coyotes have been forced to adjust to living near humans as open land becomes more difficult to find.

Meet the Trickster

A trickster is a character in a story. Tricksters use their

wits to get what they want. Sometimes they trick other

characters. Sometimes they are the ones being tricked.

A trickster doesn’t always have the same name or

even the same body. He is often an animal with human

features, such as a coyote, fox, tortoise, or spider.
