Monitor ComprehensionProblem and SolutionA problem is something

that needs to be worked

out. A solution fixes the

problem.

ouston, Texas, is a lot like other big cities. Kids can grow up there without knowing how the food they eat is grown. This is a problem. Urban Harvest is trying to solve that problem. This group helps by teaching people about community gardening and how they can utilize, or use, those skills to create gardens in the middle of cities. Urban Harvest volunteers show that a garden can grow in a vacant lot, a public

park, a housing project, or at a school.

Community gardens do more than make a neighborhood beautiful. They raise awarenessabout the environment. Gardens build community spirit. Adults as well as kids learn the health benefits of eating fruit and vegetables. Gardeners learn how nature works. Best of all, gardeners get to eat the fresh, tasty food they grow.

Have you ever heard a coyote howl at night? If you have, you may live near coyote country. These days, coyote country is nearly everywhere, but this was not always true. Coyotes used to live mostly in the Great Plains states.

How did this coyote spread occur? Each year, more and more suburban homes are built near coyote country. Since coyotes prefer open land, they roam farther away from old habitats in search of it. As a result, coyotes have been forced to adjust to living near humans as open land becomes more difficult to find.

Tales of the

Where does the wind come from? Why is there

night? Why does a leopard have spots?

Nowadays, scientists investigate and answer questions

like these. But long ago, people made up stories to

explain how the world works. Some of these stories were

trickster tales.

Meet the Trickster

A trickster is a character in a story. Tricksters use their

wits to get what they want. Sometimes they trick other

characters. Sometimes they are the ones being tricked.

A trickster doesn’t always have the same name or

even the same body. He is often an animal with human

features, such as a coyote, fox, tortoise, or spider.
