Welcome to the 3rd Annual

Planting a Seed to Grow the Gardens

Our goal: $400,000.00

Raising this these funds will allow us to begin construction of the reflecting pool. This is a long-awaited project for which significant dona-tions have already been pledged. With your help tonight we hope this

project can be completed in the near future!

Tonight, the Friends of the Kansas State University Gardens plan to provide you with a re-markable night of entertainment. We want you to experience more great food and fun than you can imagine. And we also happen to have an assortment of beverages that you won’t want to miss!

Thank you for the support you have shown us by being here tonight. If by chance you learn something new about the Gardens… something about its beginning in 1875 to teach Land Grant Uni-versity students about gardening, or the present conservatory having been built in 1908 and then moved to its present site in 1978...we’d love it if you would continue your support by telling all your friends and family what you learn! Our greatest asset is your understanding and advocacy.

The KSU Gardens have been designed as a life-long learning laboratory, to encourage envi-ronmental involvement with the University community and the general public. An ever-changing display of plants provides an opportunity for education, research and conservation. Students and faculty use the Gardens as an extension to their classroom teachings. For example, students from the arts, architecture, education, entomology, horticulture, and hotel and hospitality visit annually.

Over 20,000 people visit the Gardens during the year! Over 80% of the funding of the Gar-dens is through your generous donations. We are grateful for your support. Tonight please ask any member of the Friends of the Gardens Board and we’ll tell you all about the truly wonderful plans we have for the Gardens. We are proud to be a part of this Land Grant school and this great com-munity.

Warmly,

The Friends of the Kansas State University Gardens

Dan and Beth Bird

"We’ve met so many people through K-State and they’re all good people

who we enjoy. We encourage people to volunteer and give to K-State. It all

boils down to, we’re having a lot of fun.” - Dan Bird

Dan Bird and Beth Wilson first met when they were set up on a blind date in 1960 at K-State. Both small-town natives — Dan was from Anthony, Kan., and Beth from La Crosse, Kan. — they bonded over their love of football and basketball, dancing to the Glen Miller Band at the union, and hanging out at Kites. In 1961, Beth graduated from the College of Business Administration, and Dan earned his degree from the College of Agriculture a year later. In between their respective graduations, they were married in La Crosse.

Together, Dan and Beth have invested in an astonishing array of initiatives at K-State, from the Col-leges of Agriculture, Business Administration, Human Ecology and Arts and Sciences to McCain Audi-torium, K-State Athletics, marching band, Classy Cats, KSU Gardens and many others. And like many others in the K-State community, the Birds' love and support for K-State has grown steadily over the years. Dan made his first gift of $10 in 1964. In 1969, they bought football season tickets — seats they still hold today. They also have men's basketball season tickets. They're both trustees of the KSU Foundation and lifetime members of the K-State Alumni Association.

Dan and Beth have made a significant commitment to support the new reflecting pool in our Kan-sas State University Gardens. We honor them for their dedication to delivering a place of peace, beauty and inspiration to our community.

Warren and Carol Weibert

“It is only natural that we see a “living legacy” in the beauty of the Gardens

and fond remembrances of our parents.” - Warren Weibert

Why did we become involved with K State Gardens?

Warren and Carol’s mothers both enjoyed having flowering plants growing around the house during the summer. In spite of the fact that Warren’s mother did the washing, clean-ing, and cooking for a family of five children, she always kept a vegetable garden and an extensive flower garden on the farm. She had an incredible love for flowers, as did her mother and her daughters. When Warren was attending Kansas State University in the 1960’s, Warren’s mother cherished the time she was able to visit and commented on the

beauty of the campus.

When Warren and Carol moved to Manhattan in 2003, they became more aware of the many projects on campus needing funding, including the KSU Gardens. It is only natural that they see a “living legacy” in the beauty of the Gardens and fond remembrances of their parents. We want to invest in the Gardens as a tribute to our parents and believe that thousands of visitors will find quiet solitude as they visit the gardens and this beautiful

reflecting pool for years to come.

Carol and Warren have made a significant commitment to the new reflecting pool at the Kansas State University Gardens. We honor them for their dedication to delivering a place of peace, beauty and inspiration to our community in remembrance of their mothers.

Our Immediate Fundraising Goal:

$400,000.00

Your charitable contributions assist in growing the KSU Gardens and in-

creasing its visibility as a gateway to campus in the North Corridor pro-

ject which will begin next year. Tonight, during our Evening Extraordi-

naire you will have the opportunity to raise your hand and join others in

support of our garden development. This historic university project will

enhance our role as the nation’s first designated Land Grant school.

Raising these funds will allow us to begin construction of the reflecting

pool which will be placed between the already installed arbors toward

the north end of the present garden. The plans call for the area to be

walled and beautifully lighted. This is a long-awaited project for which

significant donations have already been received. With your help tonight

we hope this project can be completed in the near future!

VALUE: PRICELESS

EVERYONE GOES HOME A WINNER!

The KSU Gardens are designed as a lifetime learning laboratory to encourage environmental involve-

ment with the university community as well as the public. An everchanging display of plants provides

an opportunity for education, research, and conservations. Over 80% funded by charitable donations,

for K-State students and visitors of all ages and is free and open to the public.

The conservatory was first built in 1908 on grounds near Dickens Hall where the present Bluemont Hall is located. When Bluemont Hall was planned the gardens and the conservatory were moved piece by piece to their present location near the dairy barn (now the Gardens office) in 1978.

Kansas State University Gardens History

In 1863 Bluemont College became Kansas State Agricultural College and eventually became Kansas State University.

In 1871, the K-State Agriculture College purchased the Gale farmstead (once a plant nursery) that eventually became the Kansas State University Gardens.

In 1877, 100 species of trees and shrubs were sent to the college from Harvard Botanical Gardens to form a campus arboretum.

At its peak, the campus arboretum contained 4,000 specimens representing 700 species of woody plants. Through the years, as Kansas State University grew, new building construction considerably reduced the number of plants in the campus arboretum and garden size.

In 1907, a Victorian style conservatory (originally called the 'plant museum') was built to the imme-diate southeast of then Horticulture Hall which was later named Dickens Hall in honor of Dr. Albert Dickens, professor and then Department Head of Horticulture from 1902-1930.

in 1911, Mike Ahern was hired as a Professor of Horticulture. Ahern also served as the K-State Ath-letic Director until 1946 and the field house was named after him.

in 1927, Professor Leon Reed Quinlan established a formal rose garden. He is credited with planting many campus trees.

in 1978, when the formal gardens were eliminated to make way for Bluemont Hall, The Gardens and Conservatory were relocated to their current site.

In 1989, new Rose Garden was planted.

In 1993, Formal design for 12 acre display garden was created by K-State Faculty and students in Landscape Architecture and Horticulture Departments.

In 1997, The first director, Scott McElwain was hired. With his leadership and generous sponsors, The Gardens continue to develop. Garden beds and collections blossomed. Walkways, fountains, pergolas, limestone walls, gateways, sculptures, etc. enhanced the beauty.

Today, the Kansas State University Gardens are a horticulture display garden and an invaluable ed-ucational resource and learning laboratory for K-State students and the visiting public.

Originally, the Gardens Visitor Center was the K-State Dairy Barn and Milk House (caretaker's cottage). It was built in 1933 and housed students workers that lived upstairs and milked for their rent. The first floor contained a weighing room, milk room, refrigerator, washroom and the herds-man's office. In 1976, due to inadequate facilities, the actual dairy production was moved to a new site north of campus. Recent improvement to the Visitor Center includes several large screen televi-sions with photos of the Gardens in their peak seasons, plans for future development and a brief history. An interactive screen provides a map of the Gardens as well as a connection to university news.
