Exodus 13 Jesus Storybook Bible (p. 84)

Moses and the Red Sea

God rescues his family

First 10 minutes of the service hour: Engage kids in cooperative play activities to help them connect to other kids Next 5 minutes: Connect Time Next 25 minutes: Large Group Last 25 minutes: Snack and Small Group Finish early? Repeat the activity! Kids this age learn through repetition. Or, check out the end of the activities section to find an idea for this week.

Before going into large group, remind your class what HOPS the Kangaroo says:

o Have Fun o Obey your leaders o Put your listening ears on o Share with others

As kids leave, remind them to tell their parents about the game we played together in small groups.

Today’s story is about one of the times God delivered his family by parting the Red Sea. It’s pretty remarkable. We hope kids will begin to grasp the idea that God loves to rescue his family.

Page 2: 3PK 081014 Moses and the Red Sea LW49gwb73j4zuj2z3clp19vafg-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/... · sheet, dropping the other side down so that both sheets form a “wall”—shake the wall

GOAL: Connect time is all about engaging kids in a short, interactive game to prepare them for Large Group.

• Clean up! (when you get the 5-minute warning from the presenter) • Line up. • While in line, tell kids we’re going to hear more about Moses. God gave Moses a

special job and Moses decided to follow God! o Get kids familiar with what a rescue is by playing a game of “hot lava”:

§ Choose an area of the floor and have kids walk around it § If they go outside of that area, they’ve fallen into “hot lava!” § If kids fall into “hot lava,” rescue them by helping them back into the

“safe” area. • Then have kids stop, and tell them that today we’re going to hear how God used

Moses to recue his family! If the music hasn’t started yet, remind kids that when their listening ears are on, their mouths should be closed tight. Then practice that together! For fun, hop into Large Group like HOPS.

Page 3: 3PK 081014 Moses and the Red Sea LW49gwb73j4zuj2z3clp19vafg-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/... · sheet, dropping the other side down so that both sheets form a “wall”—shake the wall

Goal: to help kids retell the story by reenacting it, with a special emphasis on God’s miraculous rescue. Why? This story is truly incredible: God made a way for his family when it seemed impossible. Kids may not grasp that now, but hopefully they’ll grasp the implication of the story later by understanding it now. Tip: Make the reenactment activity really fun! Use silly voices, ask kids to repeat phrases like “God loves to rescue us,” etc.

*Serve kids snacks as you review the story. Then have some fun re-enacting God’s rescue! REVIEW

1. What important job did God have for Moses? ( to rescue God’s family) 2. When Moses asked the king if God’s family could go, what did Pharaoh say? (No!) 3. After 9 warnings from God, did Pharaoh finally let God’s family go? (Yes!) 4. Why did God’s family have to stop walking away from Egypt? (They came to the Red

Sea; it was too deep to cross.) 5. How did they get across the Red Sea? (God made a path right through the middle!) 6. Who was chasing God’s family? (Pharaoh and his army.) 7. How did God rescue his family? (The Red Sea split for them, but not for pharaoh.)

RE-ENACT

• Two volunteers should hold the blue sheets (they should be on top of each other, as if it’s just one sheet) as a barrier between the kids and one of the walls

• Call out “Cross the sea!” Then each of you should hold the top two corners of one sheet, dropping the other side down so that both sheets form a “wall”—shake the wall like it’s waves!

• When kids get to the other side, say, “Yay, God rescued his family!” • Make it fun! Tell kids they have to cross the sea doing the movement you call out.

Here are some ideas: o Jump o Skip o Take baby steps

(continue on the next page)

o Dance o Crawl o Act like a chicken o Etc.!

• At the end of each “crossing” say, “God rescued his family!” *Pray together and thank God that he loves to rescue us! Extra time? Play Simon Says: Line the kids up in a row. Stand a few feet away, facing them. Explain that you will give them a command: It should be fun and silly like “touch your nose,” “spin around,” “jump on one foot,” or “quack like a duck.” Before most commands, you will say, “Simon Says.” (“Simon says spin around!”) If Simon says it, the kids should do it. But…if Simon doesn’t say it (“Spin around!”) the kids should stand still. To mix it up, let kids take turns playing Simon. Or turn it into “_________(kid’s name) Says.”

There are quite a few ways for kids to interact with you during this story. Some are written into the script, but feel free to adapt or add your own. The more you can get kids to repeat a word or phrase or add a hand motion, the better!

So you say you can dance? Show your stuff! Let loose during the songs and show the kids how to actively worship our awesome God! (Honestly, how many times a day do you get to act like a kid?)

Presenter: Hi Friends! Welcome to Kid’s Club. I'm _______________ and I'm really glad you're here today. Before we get started, I want you to meet my friend HOPS. She’s going to remind us of the kind of choices we can make today in Kids’ Club. Video: HOPS 3 Put On Your Listening Ears (about 1 minute) REVIEW Presenter: (Hold up the Bible for kids to see.) This is God’s story. Out of all the stories in the world, this story is the most important. It’s God’s Rescue plan. Remember how God made the whole world and everything was good? The world was perfect! Give me a smile and a thumbs up! (Let kids respond. Then change your tone.) But THEN, something bad happened. Adam and Eve chose to disobey God, and sadness and death came into the world… Show me your sad face. (Let kids respond.) This was really sad. Even though Adam and Eve disobeyed God…God loved them anyway! And he didn’t want to leave them in a world filled with pain and sadness and wrong things. So God planned a great rescue so that Adam and Eve—and you and me—can be close to him again. The rescuer was God’s very own son, Jesus. GOD PLANS TO RESCUE HIS FAMILY Well, God planned to send the Rescuer, Jesus, through a family! But even before Jesus came, God’s family got into a lot of trouble. The good news is, God loves to rescue his people! So he asked a guy named Moses to do a special job. And today, we’re going to learn about how God rescued his family through Moses. Can you guys say, “Moses”? (Let kid say: Moses.) PHARAOH SAYS NO God told Moses to go to Egypt and see Pharaoh—the king of Egypt—who was forcing God’s

Page 6: 3PK 081014 Moses and the Red Sea LW49gwb73j4zuj2z3clp19vafg-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/... · sheet, dropping the other side down so that both sheets form a “wall”—shake the wall

family to work as slaves. Moses told Pharaoh, “God says to let his people go.” But Pharaoh was stubborn and he didn’t listen to God. He said, “NO!” (Show picture of Pharaoh.) Can you guys all say, “No?” (Let kids say: No!)

So God sent Pharaoh 9 warnings called plagues. Let’s count to nine together (lead kids in counting: 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9). Great job! And nine times, Moses said, “Let God’s people go!” … but 9 times, Pharaoh said… (make a mean face so kids know to yell): NO! PHARAOH SAYS YES Well, finally, Pharaoh realized that God was going to rescue his family. And the 10th time Moses asked if God’s family could go, Pharaoh said… (look happy so kids know to yell): YES! And God’s family was free! So they all packed up their things and began to leave Egypt. Remember, back then there weren’t any cars, so they had to walk out of Egypt. Everybody stand up! (Let kids stand.) Let’s pretend we’re walking out of Egypt! (Lead the kids around the room, walking slowly.) (Finally, stop and act tired. Flop down on the presentation area.) Whew! Let’s all sit for a while (let kids sit). God’s family had to sit, too, because they reached the Red Sea (show picture of the Red Sea). It was way too deep to cross! PHARAOH CHANGES HIS MIND But then...something horrible happened! Pharaoh decided that he didn’t want to let God’s family go! He wanted them to keep working for him, as his slaves. And he decided that he was going to go find them and bring them back! So Pharaoh got a whole army and probably some horses and chariots. And they started chasing after God’s people (point out the horses chasing the people in the picture). Let’s keep sitting but pump our arms like we’re running as fast we can (lead kids in pumping arms). Great job! Now you guys can sit down. (Let kids sit.) Wow, Pharaoh and his army was pretty fast! And that means they were getting closer and closer to God’s family. Meanwhile, God’s family was stuck. They had to stop because they couldn’t cross the water. Everybody say, “Oh no!” (Let kids say: Oh no!) So Pharaoh’s army was getting closer…and CLOSER. GOD PARTS THE SEA Well, God wanted to save his family. So he did a miracle! You know the huge, big sea (point to the picture)? God made a dry path RIGHT through the middle! (Show picture of people walking through the water.) The people walked through—they could keep running away from Pharaoh and his army. And they didn’t even get wet! God’s family made it safely through to the other side! Everybody, say, “Hooray!” (Let kids say: Hooray!)

Page 7: 3PK 081014 Moses and the Red Sea LW49gwb73j4zuj2z3clp19vafg-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/... · sheet, dropping the other side down so that both sheets form a “wall”—shake the wall

GOD CLOSES THE SEA And remember how Pharaoh was chasing God’s family? Well, by the time God’s family made it to the other side, Pharaoh and his men were somewhere in the middle of the sea, following the path that God’s family took. But God didn’t want Pharaoh to get to God’s family! He wanted Pharaoh to let his family go! So God closed the sea. Both walls came down, which meant that Pharaoh and his army couldn’t get to God’s family again. (Show picture of Israelites rejoicing.) God’s family was free! Woohoo! Everybody say, “Hooray” again! (Let kids say: Hooray!) One more time, as LOUD as you can! “HOORAY!” Yay! I love stories about God rescuing his people! Let’s pray together and thank God that he loves to rescue us. Pray: Hi God! Thanks for rescuing your family! Thanks for rescuing me. I love you. Aaaa-MEN! WORSHIP Now let’s stand up! (Let kids stand.) Let’s dance and sing to thank Jesus Song: Jesus Loves Me Song: Deep and Wide Dismiss kids to small groups. (Be creative as you dismiss them. Ask them to come give you a high five first, or maybe tiptoe or hop to their groups.)
