Preface
The 3G wireless network has been created to maximize the connectivity of consumers traveling around the world. Importance of 3g and comparison between previous technologies and 3rd generation technology, what is required for using 3G, its advantages and disadvantages will be explained in this project.

Introduction
International Mobile Telecommunications-2000 (IMT--2000) is known as
3G.
A generation of standards for Mobile phones and mobile
telecommunications services fulfilling specifications by the
International Telecommunication Union.
These 3G ITU standards finalized 3G services and initially launched in
2000by NTT DoCoMo in Japan branded FOMA, in May 2001
Higher bandwidth enables a range of new applications.
Different generations
In 1G(1st generation) analog signals are used for transmission, Analog signals are signals with continuous values.
In 1G, primarily voice transmission is concentrated.
In 2G(2nd generation) digital signals are used for transmission, digital signals transmit 0’s and 1’s.
In 2G both voice and data are transmitted. 1G technology involved analog radio signals
Continuation……
In 3G(3rd generation) digital signals are used to transmit data.
3G technology allows you to have internet, fast data transfer and
high-resolution video and multimedia capabilities within your cell
phone.
Additional features in 3G over 2G
* Video streaming,
* TV broadcast
* Video calls,
* Video clips – news, music, sports
* Enhanced gaming,
* Chat, * location services
In comparison, the theoretical speed of 3G can be up
to 2 Mbps,
i.e., approximately 200 times faster than previous 2G
networks.
3G technology is the latest in mobile communications.
Added speed and throughput will make it possible to
run applications such as streaming video clips. The data are sent through the technology called Packet
switching. Voice calls are interpreted through Circuit Switching.
What is Required for Using 3G?:
The first thing you require is a device (e.g. a mobile phone) that is
3G compatible. This is where the name 3G phone comes from - a
phone that has 3G functionality.
Unlike with Wi-Fi, you need to be subscribed to a service
provider to get 3G network connectivity. We often call this kind
of service a data plan or network plan.
Your device is connected to the 3G network through its SIM card
(in the case of a mobile phone) or its 3G data card (which can be
of different types: USB, PCMCIA etc.), which are both generally
provided/sold by the service provider. Through that, you get
connected to the Internet whenever you are within a 3G network .
Advantages
New radio spectrum to relieve overcrowding in existing
systems.
More bandwidth, security, and reliability.
Interoperability between service providers.
Fixed and variable data rates.
Asymmetric data rates.
Backward compatibility of devices with existing networks.
Always-online devices. 3G will use IP connectivity, IP is
packet based (not circuit based).
Rich multimedia services.
Disadvantages
The cost of upgrading base stations and cellular infrastructure
to 3G is very high.
One disadvantage is that cell phones that use 3G services
require equipment that is more expensive than cell phones that
operate using 2G technology.
Plans for 3G technology can be more expensive as well.
More power is needed to allow a mobile device to perform
these tasks, larger batteries are needed. Therefore, 3G phones
are larger and heavier than 2G phones.
Application
Mobile Interview.
Conferences.
File Transfer (multimedia
messages).
e-learning & m-learning.
Television access through cell
phones.
Business transactions.
Appendix
It is “a radio communication technology that will create a bit pipe for providing mobile access to internet based services.” In simple words, this is a means to enhance mobility in our lives at a greater level. Through 3G networks, the network providers can offer the users a broad variety of much improved and sophisticated services.
Conclusion
3G environments offer the ability to deliver mass-market, high-
quality, wireless multimedia applications that include extraordinary
capabilities such as location-based services and global roaming
The billion $ question is whether these new, advanced services will
offset the costs required to design, develop, and deploy the networks.
It will be very interesting to see what innovative applications will be
developed for these networks and how willing consumers are to pay
up. Stay tuned!
