Wida’an Shahr Shawwal means good bye to the month of Shawwal in Arabic. The first week of October marked the end of the Islamic month of Shawwal, the most auspicious time of the year for Muslims. Even as Shawwal bids farewell, many of us are still trying to make the most out of the festive season visiting and calling relatives and friends to our Eid open house at the eleventh hour. How we wish good times lasted forever. Sadly, they do have an expiration date but Insyaallah, Ramadan and Shawwal will come knocking on our doors again before we know it. In the midst of the celebration, it is easy to lose track of our expenses. I am sure many of you have been spending a king’s ransom in preparing for Eid. Most of us spend heaps on new clothes for the whole family; new furniture, new curtains, and an assortment of cookies for visiting guests. Much to our surprise, sud-denly there’s very little money left in our pockets and bank accounts. Don’t worry, there are ways to save money after Eid and three easy steps is all it takes to put your finances back in order. Step one is to plan your expenses carefully for the money in hand. Sort your priorities wisely making sure to differentiate your needs and wants in the budget. The next step is to be a smart shopper by making inexpensive purchases. For instance, the Jusco sale might seem very attractive but you need to ask yourself, if it is possible to get the same item for less at Tesco. The third or final step is to try and minimize your social activities, and try to reduce your electricity and wa-ter bills for the month. Make an effort to pack lunch, turn off lights and fans upon leaving any room and never leave the tap running unnecessarily. These small sacrifices could help to patch the hole in your wal-let, leaving everybody happy in the end. On the subject of being happy, it is nice to note that the October e-bulletin is packed with bright and cheery faces. You see smiling faces as staff and students bond during our Hari Raya Celebration, the UniKL 7th Con-vocation Ceremony and even during our Blood Donation drive held by the Student Affairs Department. Apart from those happy faces, you could also see new faces during our MEP Workshop and Campus Visit Programmes. Saving the best for last, we have pictures taken during the MoA Signing Ceremony between UniKL RCMP and Vinayaka Mission University. Enjoy!

The objective of the workshop was to promote an alternative and innovative way to teach and learn English in the classroom. The use of magazines in education (MIE) particularly in the teaching of English is seen as a refreshing approach to get away from the conventioanl mode of teaching and learning using the text-book, in line with the policy of the Ministry of Education to uphold the position of Bahasa Malaysia and to strengthen the use of the English Language (Memertabatkan Bahasa Malaysia & Memperkukuhkan Bahasa Inggeris –MBMMBI)

The highlight of the workshop was the identification and utilization of the different elements of lan-guage teaching and learning in the classroom made available through the MEP magazine. Among the ele-ments are English across the curriculum, creative writing, creative and critical thinking and problem solving activities.

The half day workshop comprised of an introductory lecture, group discussions, presentations and group-work conducted by the MIE facilitators En Shahul Hamid Kabir and Mr Peter Vela from MEP Education Consult. The emcee for the day was Mr.Raj Dronamraju, an English lecturer from the General Studies Unit of RCMP.

CAMPUS VISIT

School: SMK Sayong, Kuala Kangsar Date: 28 September 2010 Time: 8.30 am- 12.30 pm Led by: En Mohd Zaid bin Abu Othman together with 2 teachers Participants: 42 pupils UniKL Royal College of Medicine Perak played host to two different schools from two different parts of Perak which were on a day trip to the college. Though the visits took place on two different days, their objective was similar in that they wanted to get a closer look at the university campus, the courses offered at RCMP and to have a firsthand look at the facilities available at the RCMP. The teachers and pupils were taken on a tour of the main campus immediately after they were given a detailed briefing on the history and the significant milestones of UNIKL RCMP. During the question and answer session, En Mohd Zaid bin Abu Othman, the School Counselor of SMK Sayong, Kuala Kangsar, , indicated that this was his second trip to RCMP together with his science stream students, after their first trip back in the year 2005. He informed us that they have decided to have the campus visit as an annual activity so that the science stream students will have a clear picture on exactly what the MBBS and Allied Health Sciences pro-grames are all about. Before leaving to their respective schools, as usual, the groups had photo sessions at the foyer with the members of the UNIKL staff. RCMP is indeed looking forward to such visits from school children so as to establish a close rapport with schools as well as other educational establishments.

HOT DOG AND CANCER

Women have the natural tendency to assume responsibility for preparing meals

and taking care of children. Nowadays, the roles of women have become more

complicated. As modern moms, women not only act as housewives, but they

also have their own careers that require them to involve in many other activi-

ties. As busy women, they do not have sufficient time to prepare food for their

families. Frozen food and fast food

such as hot dogs/sausages, burgers

etc. are the different choices of food

that women of today prepare for their

families. So, here are some facts about

those foods that we should be aware

of.

Q: What is wrong with frozen food (hot dogs)?

A: As a matter of fact, junk food is overloaded with trans fats which bring about serious health problems, leading

to diabetes, cardiovascular disease, heart attack, stroke etc. However, a recent study came up with the proof that

nitrite additive in hot dogs form carcinogens.

Bunin found the consumption of nitrite-cured meat by pregnant women was linked with brain cancer in their chil-

dren. Peters et al also found that children eating more than 12 hot dogs per month have nine times the normal

risk of developing childhood leukemia.

Saruza and Savitz studied childhood cancer case in USA and found that children born to mothers who consumed

hot dogs one or more times per week during pregnancy have approximately doubled the risk of developing brain

tumor. Children who ate hot dogs one or more times per week were also at higher risk of getting brain cancer.

Page 16: 3ADVISOR Editorial message Chenderong Balai, Perak · Inggeris –MBMMBI) The highlight of the workshop was the identification and utilization of the different elements of lan-guage

16

Q: How could hot dog cause cancer?

A: Hot dogs contain nitrites which are used as preservatives, primarily to combat the growth of Clostridium

botulinum and also to give the meat a pinkish-reddish color and prevent it from turning brown. During the

cooking process, nitrites combine with amines naturally present in meat to form carcinogenic N-nitroso com-

pounds or Nitrosamine. It is also suspected that nitrites can combine with amines in the human stomach to

form N-nitroso compounds. These compounds are known carcinogens and have been associated with cancer

of the oral cavity, urinary bladder, esophagus, stomach and brain.

Q. Some vegetables contain nitrites, do they cause cancer too?

A. It is true that nitrites are commonly found in many green

vegetables, especially spinach, cabbage, celery and green let-

tuce. However, the consumption of vegetables appears to be

effective in reducing the risk of cancer.

How is this possible?

The explanation lies in the formation of N-nitroso compounds from nitrites and amines. Nitrite containing

vegetables also have Vitamin C and D, which serve to inhibit the formation of N-nitroso compounds. Conse-

quently, vegetables are quite safe and healthy, and serve to reduce your cancer risk. That fact is sup-

ported by Bednar & Kies findings. Feeding of diets varying in naturally occurring nitrate and nitrite content

resulted in a significant variation in urinary excretion of nitrate and nitrite. When vitamin C rich fruit juices

were added to the diets, analysis showed lower levels of nitrate/nitrite in urine.

Q. Do other food products contain nitrites?

A. Yes, all cured meats contain nitrites. These include bacon and fish.

Page 17: 3ADVISOR Editorial message Chenderong Balai, Perak · Inggeris –MBMMBI) The highlight of the workshop was the identification and utilization of the different elements of lan-guage

17

Q: What is the concentration of nitrite as the safe level?

A : The limitation of sodium nitrite in meat as suggested by Food and Drug

Administration is 200 ppm or below.

TIPS FOR CONSUMERS

1. Do not buy hot dog containing nitrite. Do not consume 12 or more of these hot dogs per month.

2. Choose hot dogs that have a brownish color.

Sebenarnya, cita-cita saya untuk menghafal Al-Qur’an sejak kecil.

3. Bagaimana metode yang anda gunakan untuk menghafal? Setiap hari, kami hanya menghafal 10 ayat saja. Pada waktu Ashar, Kami selalu duduk bersama. Anak saya

membaca ayat, kemudian saya mengulanggi bacaan sehingga 3 (tiga) kali.

Page 29: 3ADVISOR Editorial message Chenderong Balai, Perak · Inggeris –MBMMBI) The highlight of the workshop was the identification and utilization of the different elements of lan-guage

29

4. Bila anda selesai menghafal seluruh Al-Qur’an? Kemudian

anak bongsuku pun mendirikan rumahtangga.

Anakku pun merasa bimbang tentang hafalanku menjadi terabai.

Qur’an. Semangat anak bongsu saya pun masih membara untuk mengikuti usaha saya sebagai hafizhah Al-Qur’an. Bahkan, anak saya tetap gigih dan meneruskan usaha menghafal Al-Quran.

Hingga aku pun selalu memberi mereka bermacam-macam hadiah.

mereka pun sangat berbahagia. Hingga saya lihat air mata bahagia mengalir di pipi mereka. 6. Sekarang, apakah anda merasa kesulitan untuk mengulanggi hafalan? Saya selalu mendengarkan bacaan Al-Qur’an, dan mengikuti bacaan. Demikian juga ketika sholat, saya selalu

membaca beberapa surah panjang. Kadang-kadang saya minta salah seorang anak perempuan saya untuk menyemak hafalanku.

Tetapi, insya Allah mereka selalu berusaha

mencapai cita-cita menjadi hafizah. Semoga Allah mengizinkan niat suci mereka untuk menghafal Al-Quran. .

Page 30: 3ADVISOR Editorial message Chenderong Balai, Perak · Inggeris –MBMMBI) The highlight of the workshop was the identification and utilization of the different elements of lan-guage

Qur’an?

Terl mendampingiku menghafal Al-Qur’an pada usia ABG.

13. Nasihat anda terhadap para remaja? Jagalah Allah, nescaya Allah akan menjagamu. Nikmat Allah berupa kesihatan, dan banyaknya waktu ter-

luang, tingkatkan usaha menghafal kitab Allah Azza Wa Jalla.
