In addition to grants for individual companies to train existing or new-hire employees or to create jobs there are opportunities centered on specific industries or particular skills. Many of these opportunities do not require a company to directly apply for a grant. For example, HCC is the grant applicant leading a consortium of companies that have need for project management certification, leadership development, and enhancement of communications skills for their employees. Companies participating in the consortium may be sending one or many employees for training at half the normal cost. An upcoming opportunity centers on global logistics and supply chain management for companies involved in exporting goods or services. This grant covers a large percentage of several American Society of Transportation and Logistics certifications, including the Certification in Transportation and Logistics (CTL) and the Professional Designation in Supply Chain and Logistics (PLS). The PLS certification provides a thorough entry-level understanding of logistics, while the CTL is the premier credential in the transportation and logistics industry. Healthcare has been forecasted to remain a source of job growth in the American labor market, and the Institute for Corporate and Continuing Education (ICCE) at HCC remains committed to providing quality training for prospective and current healthcare employees in the Tampa Bay area. This spring, ICCE partnered with Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) to design and implement a first of its kind continuing education training program for HCC Nursing graduates. Several disciplines of nursing within HCA hospitals were identified as areas with potential staff shortages over the next few years. Forward thinking led to the request for development of curriculum and execution of instruction specifically to meet these needs.

The staff of ICCE met with leaders of Brandon Regional Hospital, starting with the Surgical Services Department. We ascertained the training needs of new employees at participating HCA hospitals and set out to devise curriculum tailored and targeted in design to accelerate the learning curve of new HCC Nursing students to allow them to rapidly gain experience in concentrated areas in advance of completing the traditional three-month new-employee orientation. This allowed the participating hospitals to hire new graduates with experience targeted to the hospitals’ areas of need: a winning solution for everyone!

While many new nursing graduates throughout the country are competing in the job market against more experienced nurses who are working longer, HCC Nursing graduates have been afforded an opportunity for immediate hire, as all those who successfully completed this training were offered two-year contracts for employment. Partial funding for this program came from Tampa Bay Workforce Alliance. Jusenny Grullon, HCC Nursing graduate May 2012, said: “This program has meant a lot to boost my nursing career and focus my efforts in the operating room. I now know why I went to nursing school. Nursing instructors Hank Geiter and Sandra Bryant commented on literally seeing students transition from being overwhelmed, to becoming tentative, to finally being confident in the operating room.

The inaugural efforts focused on developing a class of HCC Nursing students to work in the Surgical Services Department of Bayonet Point and Brandon Regional Hospitals. Plans for the next area of focus, the Emergency Department, are already underway with the assessment of training needs and the design of the curriculum. Student recruitment will take place in the coming weeks. The training the participants receive is customized to the needs of the hospitals where they will be employed upon successful completion of the training. Students are utilizing the skills learned in nursing school and broadening their knowledge base with additional training, including but not limited to the Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN) Certification, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advance Life Support (PALS). In addition, ACLS and PALS will be offered through ICCE for the general public and other HCC Nursing students beginning this fall. For more information on healthcare continuing education training offered through ICCE, please visit our website www.TampaTraining.com or call our allied health coordinator, Belinthia Berry, at 813.259.6513.
