The Oklahoma Council for Indian Education Board of Directors recognizes and commends the recipients of annual OCIE Awards.

Nominations of over 911 high school and collegiate Native American Oklahoma students were accepted for membership in the 2017 Oklahoma Indian Student Honor Society. Each student maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.9 or above, demonstrated moral character and leadership skills, and participated in Native American cultural and community service activities.

Three scholarships named in honor of outstanding educators and active in the formation of Oklahoma Council for Indian Education organization were awarded.

• Alice Tonemah: Faith Morning Star Wind, Depew High School• Marlene LeClair/Helen Wright: Kelsie LaPierre, Norman High School• John Sam Memorial: Gabrielle Budder, Claremore High School

The OCIE Board acknowledges the many contributions of the 2016 Annual OCIE Award recipients. They have shared their wisdom, knowledge, talents, time and hearts with our Native American students. Our honor goes to:

• 2016 OCIE Teacher of the Year: Kimberly Shook, Edmond Schools• 2016 OCIE Educator of the Year: Dr. Samantha Benn-Duke, Northeastern State University• 2016 High School Student of the Year: Brandon Cobb, Edmond Schools• Parent of the Year: Daniel & Jeanna Jim, Edmond Schools• There was not an OCIE college student of the year

OCIE award winners are automatically nominated for the national awards given by the National Indian Education Association. This year, OCIE had two recipients who were selected to receive an NIEA national award! Congratulations to:

• Elections shall take place on December 5, 2017 beginning at 8:00 a.m. and concluding at 12:00 p.m. • Election results will be announced December 5, 2017 at closing session • OCIE Board of Directors will be installed on December 5, 2017• The positions below are open for election and serve a 2 year term:

• Representatives from districts will be selected December 4 in regional caucuses

OCIE BYLAWSARTICLE VI — BOARD OF DIRECTORSSection 1 The OCIE Board of Directors shall be composed of eighteen members elected for staggered terms of two (2) years to begin with the year they are elected.

Section 2The OCIE Board shall be composed of: • Eight (8) members shall be District Representatives • Two (2) members shall be At-Large Members • Two (2) members shall be Student At-Large Members • Six (6) members shall be Officers At-Large Members

ARTICLE VIII — ELECTIONSSection 1Elections shall be conducted at the OCIE membership meeting.

Section 2Eight members shall be District Representatives elected by the voting membership of their designated OCIE district. The districts are within four quadrants formed by the division of Interstate 40 and Interstate 35. District Representatives shall be designated as follows: • Northeast District – two (2) members • Northwest District – two (2) members • Southeast District – two (2) members • Southwest District – two (2) members

Section 3The OCIE voting membership shall elect ten (10) At-Large members: • Two (2) members shall be Members At-Large • Two (2) members shall be Students At-Large • Six (6) members shall be Officers At-Large

Section 4A written protest to election results must be filed with the Election Committee within the time-frame established by the Election Committee.
