1797 – The USS Constitution is built. The USS Constitution is one of the main reasons America won the War of 1812 and retained its independence. In 2012, the 200th anniversary of the war, the Institute will build a beautiful student lounge overlooking this historic ship.

Reason #2

1862 – Building 34, which later houses Institute administration, is renovated to become a cannonball factory. Heavy iron doors between floors and suites are strategically placed to protect persons in other parts of the building if a cannonball unintentionally explodes.

1941 – The American Society for Nondestructive Testing is founded in Building 34. This, along with the building's military significance, will get the building a spot on the National Register of Historic Places.

Reason #41972 – E. Lorraine Baugh, who later became Chair of the Board of Trustees at the Institute, co-founds the National Black Nurses Association, concurrently founding the New England Regional Black Nurses Association.

Title SlideReason #51974 – The Charlestown Navy Yard formally closes as a naval shipyard. In the course of 174 years, it had constructed over 200 warships and repaired thousands more.

1977 – The Institute is founded by Massachusetts General Hospital, the third oldest hospital in the U.S.

Reason #71977 – The Institute's original logo is a chambered nautilus, a creature that grows its shell in spirals, symbolizing the anticipated incremental growth of education at MGH.

1981 – The MGH School of Nursing, the predecessor to the Institute, graduates its last class and closes its doors. The School was the oldest continuously operating nursing school in America.

Reason #91985 – The MGH Institute formally incorporates, with an independent board of trustees separate from the MGH board. Prior to this, the Institute's degrees were granted directly by MGH.

1992 – Bette Ann Harris, who was the first student to receive a degree from the Institute in 1983, becomes Director of the Institute's Physical Therapy Program.

1995 – The Institute’s Program in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) introduces the first master’s level curriculum to offer dual teacher licensure in speech-language and reading, recognizing that the two are deeply interconnected. Five years later, the American Speech-Language-Hearing association emulates this idea with changes to its policies for practice.

1998 – The Institute passes the 1,000 alumni milestone. Just 12 years later, in 2010, the Institute will be enrolling over 1,000 students per semester.

Reason #131999 – U.S. News & World Report ranks the Institute’s Doctor in Physical Therapy program among the nation’s top ten. In subsequent years, the Speech-Language Pathology program and the Direct-Entry Nursing program also become nationally ranked.

2001 – Professor and Trustee Jeanette Ives Erickson, Senior Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nurse at MGH, is profiled in How Jane Won, a book detailing the lives of highly successful women.

2001 – Institute alumni spring into action after the September 11 attacks and join the Massachusetts Disaster Medical Assistance Team to provide aid at Ground Zero.

2002 – The Institute launches Project Yoda, designed to implement a state-of-the-art student information system, which takes two years to complete and involves the entire Institute community. The project included a customized Clinical Affiliations module, the first of its kind and a model for the industry.

2002 – The Institute participates in the "American Pride" celebration, sponsoring parade entry fees for students marching in support of gay, lesbian, and bisexual rights.

Reason #182002 – The Institute turns 25 and purchases Building 36 in the Charlestown Navy Yard as its permanent location, dedicating it as the Catherine Filene Shouse Building.

Reason #192002 – The Institute awards the first Doctor of Physical Therapy degrees, the first doctoral level degree awarded by the Institute. The new degree is awarded to 30 entry-level students and 61 students in the Transitional DPT Program.

2003 – Institute alumnae and students provide medical care for a deadly earthquake in Iran.

2005 – A team of Institute students and professors travel to Swaziland for two weeks to provide health care, returning there in 2010 and 2012.

2005 – The Institute begins acquiring state-of-the-art patient simulators worth close to $350,000.

Reason #232006 – The Institute adds a prohibition against transgender discrimination to its Non-Discrimination Policy. Students begin holding co-curricular lectures on transgender health care issues and advocate for transgender health information programs.

Reason #262010 – The Institute moves its annual Commencement Ceremony to the Hynes Auditorium in Boston after outgrowing its previous location at the Harvard Medical School Quadrangle.

2010 – The Chronicle of Higher Education names the Institute “A Great College to Work For.” The Institute earns the distinction again in 2011 and 2012.

2010 – The Institute wins the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education District 1 Gold Communication award for its newly redesigned Web site.

Studies and Innovation is founded. The Center joins the School of Nursing, created in 2009,

and the School of Health & Rehabilitation Sciences, created in 2010, to form the

Institute’s diverse and substantial academic suite.

The MS-HPEd is one of the first in the country to offer a concentration in clinical simulation education.
