1797 – The USS Constitution is built. The USS Constitution is one of the main reasons America won the War of 1812 and retained its independence. In 2012, the 200th anniversary of the war, the Institute will build a beautiful student lounge overlooking this historic ship.

1862 – Building 34, which later houses Institute administration, is renovated to become a cannonball factory. Heavy iron doors between floors and suites are strategically placed to protect persons in other parts of the building if a cannonball unintentionally explodes.

1941 – The American Society for Nondestructive Testing is founded in Building 34. This, along with the building's military significance, will get the building a spot on the National Register of Historic Places.

Reason #41972 – E. Lorraine Baugh, who later became Chair of the Board of Trustees at the Institute, co-founds the National Black Nurses Association, concurrently founding the New England Regional Black Nurses Association.

Reason #71977 – The Institute's original logo is a chambered nautilus, a creature that grows its shell in spirals, symbolizing the anticipated incremental growth of education at MGH.

1981 – The MGH School of Nursing, the predecessor to the Institute, graduates its last class and closes its doors. The School was the oldest continuously operating nursing school in America.

Reason #91985 – The MGH Institute formally incorporates, with an independent board of trustees separate from the MGH board. Prior to this, the Institute's degrees were granted directly by MGH.

1992 – Bette Ann Harris, who was the first student to receive a degree from the Institute in 1983, becomes Director of the Institute's Physical Therapy Program.

1995 – The Institute’s Program in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) introduces the first master’s level curriculum to offer dual teacher licensure in speech-language and reading, recognizing that the two are deeply interconnected. Five years later, the American Speech-Language-Hearing association emulates this idea with changes to its policies for practice.

1998 – The Institute passes the 1,000 alumni milestone. Just 12 years later, in 2010, the Institute will be enrolling over 1,000 students per semester.

Reason #131999 – U.S. News & World Report ranks the Institute’s Doctor in Physical Therapy program among the nation’s top ten. In subsequent years, the Speech-Language Pathology program and the Direct-Entry Nursing program also become nationally ranked.

2002 – The Institute launches Project Yoda, designed to implement a state-of-the-art student information system, which takes two years to complete and involves the entire Institute community.  The project included a customized Clinical Affiliations module, the first of its kind and a model for the industry.
