Thanks to our donors, supporters and volunteers, the Realize the Full Potential of IEEE Cam

paign smashed through its fundraising goal of $30 m

illion—w

ith a total of $32.1 m

illion raised to date.

What’s m

ore impressive is the im

pact that the cam

paign is already having on the lives of individuals and com

munities around the w

orld.

• Raising awareness of the IEEE initiatives that address pressing

global challenges

• Forging strong partnerships with corporations, individuals and

non-profits to advance work already underw

ay

• Expanding resources to have a more significant im

pact on the challenges w

e are facing

Celebrate

Here are just a few

of the global challenges being tackled by the

engineers, technologists and program

s supported by the Realize the Full

Potential of IEEE Cam

paign.

Celebrate

More than 1 billion people have no

access to reliable electricity

More than half of the w

orld’s population cannot access the Internet

As important w

ork for technologists increases, the need for engineers, STEM

professionals and engineering students is increasing globally

Solving these problems requires ingenuity and dedication, as w

ell as new generations of innovators

to rise to the occasion. Our unprecedented cam

paign supported those who rise to the challenges, m

anifesting solutions and changing lives.

“ We’re honored and grateful to have the opportunity to serve not just IEEE, but the

humanity to w

hom w

they can turn their philanthropy into impact.” –CJ Reddy

Some D

Vivian Carr: She generously lifted IEEE to the status of family w

hen she included an unrestricted bequest to the IEEE Foundation in her w

ill. Her philanthropic investm

ent provides vital resources to further the scientific and educational purposes of IEEE.

Investing in the Future of IEEE

Emerson and Elizabeth Pugh: Their fervor for the history of

technology, combined w

ith their desire to nurture scholars w

ho will advocate for the im

While im

pact can be measured in m

any ways, the greatest im

pact lies beyond the scope of any instrument or

scale. It’s the power of technology to transform

the lives of individuals and groups of individuals the world over.

The programs, projects and people featured here have all m

ade an impact on—

or been impacted by—

the Realize the Full Potential of IEEE Cam

paign.

EPICS in IEEE: Connecting Engineering to Comm

unity Service

Engineering Projects in Comm

unity Service (EPICS) partners students with professionals and non-profit organizations

to provide comm

unity service organizations with the technology they need to im

prove and deliver services and provide undergraduate students w

ith educational experiences to broaden their skills.

Lights for the Enlightened

A joint effort between IEEE Sm

art Village and the Global H

imalayan

Expedition (GH

E) brought electric lighting to remote populations

in the Him

alayan region of Northern India—

including two Buddhist

monasteries that date back to the 12th century.

Previously dependent on sooty kerosene lamps, the people in the

mountain villages surrounding the m

onasteries now have m

ore time to

do work, as w

ell as cooking and other chores. Students can study and read longer thanks to m

ore consistent light sources. Streetlights also m

ake walking betw

een buildings safer. The installation at the Lingshed m

onastery even included a computer lab w

ith a satellite Internet link.

Smart Village: Closing the Energy G

ap for the World’s M

ost Energy-Im

poverished Citizens.

The IEEE Smart Village (ISV) program

has a unique approach to supporting the w

orld’s energy-impoverished com

munities—

by providing a comprehensive

solution combining renew

able energy, comm

unity-based education and entrepreneurial opportunities.

As part of its mission, ISV provides seed-funding to carefully selected com

munity

entrepreneurs based upon credible business plans that will im

pact a significant num

ber of people through electricity, education and jobs.

Thinking globally. Acting globally.

Buddy the Dog M

Severely injured, one-year-old Germ

an Shepherd puppy Buddy was

found abandoned outside of an animal care facility in early M

ay 2018. In order to save Buddy’s life, his veterinary team

opted to amputate the

bottom half of his back leg but lacked the technology to fit him

for a prosthesis that w

ould grant him full range of m

That’s when IEEE-H

KN Iota D

Stevens Institute of Technology came to the rescue, thanks to an

EPICS in IEEE grant. The team set out to create a com

pletely functional trans-tibial (below

the knee) dog prosthesis and plans to showcase and

demonstrate the prototype robotic prosthesis to K-12 students both in

a classroom setting and in a sum

mer cam

p program during a hands-on

laboratory robotics session.

• Focus on sustainable solutions that make a long-term

• Prioritize success achieved through partnerships, starting w

• Value sustainability, so continuous training and education are essential

While the SIG

HT program

was conceptualized in 2011, it w

TryEngineering Summ

er Institutes

In 2019, 30 high school students attended the TryEngineering Summ

er Institute thanks to need-based scholarships through the IEEE Foundation. They joined 125 other high school students, collectively representing 10 countries.

The generosity of individuals, organizations and 12 IEEE societies and councils helped m

ake attending the camp a reality for students w

ith varying socioeconom

ic backgrounds. Recipients comm

ented that attending this “eye-opening” and “life-changing” program

would not

have been possible without the scholarships.

PES Scholarship Plus: Preparing the Next G

eneration of Power and Energy Engineers

The IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) Scholarship Plus provides scholarships

plus real-world experience to undergraduates interested in pow

er and energy engineering careers.

These undergraduate engineering scholarships aim to accom

plish this goal by attracting highly qualified engineering students to the field. These students are the very individuals w

ho will one day develop new

green technologies, build the sm

With teaching tools that include Inquiry U

Science Kits for Public Libraries

Science Kits for Public Libraries (SKPL) makes science kits as easy to check

out of a public library as a book! With access to a public library and a valid

library card, children can check out high-quality, hands-on STEM (Science,

Technology, Engineering and Mathem

their parents.

Initiated by the Chicago Section in 2009, the program has expanded into

Region 4 with the support of funds raised during the Realize the Full

new and exciting opportunities for young engineers w

ith engineering education and workforce developm

ent, applying technology for hum

anitarian causes and preserving the history of technology.

1100100 (100) Years of Claude Shannon

Legendary mathem

atician and engineer Claude Shannon pioneered the field of inform

ation theory, including popularizing the term

“bit”.

In 2016, to comm

emorate the

centennial of Claude Shannon’s birth, a series of activities w

ere planned—including a dual IEEE M

ilestone dedication at both N

okia Bell Labs and MIT.

Through the Realize the Full Potential of IEEE Cam

2018 and was released to a larger audience via

Amazon Prim

designed for students ranging in age from 9 to 14 from

Ventura County in California, U

In recognition of the great work being done by the Buenaventura Section,

IEEE Educational Activities recognized them in 2019 w
