By Rev. Richard DenUyl, Jr. Dear Friends, Six years ago I was in my car listening to Krista Tippett’s radio show on NPR. She was interviewing an Irish priest and poet named John O’Donohue who wrote the best selling book Anam Cara. I was immediately swept up by John’s wisdom and humility. During the course of this interview he read from his latest book, To Bless The Space Between Us. Two months later John O’Donohue passed away suddenly. It was this book that inspired me to ponder long and hard what it means to be blessed and to bless others. As we begin a New Year together, I pass on a blessing from John O’Donohue to you, his beautiful poem, A Blessing for the New Year:

Faithfully,

Speaking Pastorally

Richard

2015 Stewardship Reminder We hope you had a Christmas filled with hope, wonder and love. As we now move into the New Year and closer to our Annual Meeting on January 25 where we will formally adopt the 2015 church budget, it becomes more and more im-portant for us to be able to accurately reflect the financial support from our congregation's 2015 pledges. If you have already returned your 2015 Pledge Card, we extend a warm and grateful thank you! If you have not yet returned it, please do so as soon as possible to help us in finalizing our 2015 budget. If you need a blank Pledge Card or would like to view the 2015 Stewardship brochure for more details, you can find both on our church website at www.fccog.org.

The easiest way to provide your pledge information is to email our Director of Church Administration and Finance, Steve Summerton, at [email protected]. Please include your name and address, as well as amount of pledge (and a con-gratulation to Steve and his wife, Tami, on the birth of their new baby boy, Spencer, just before Christmas!). Thank you for helping to support the programs and ministries of our wonderful church.

On the day when

The weight deadens

On your shoulders

And you stumble,

May the clay dance

To balance you.

And when your eyes

Freeze behind

The grey window

And the ghost of loss

Gets into you,

May a flock of colours,

Indigo, red, green

And azure blue,

Come to awaken in you

A meadow of delight.

When the canvas frays

In the currach of thought

And a stain of ocean

Blackens beneath you,

May there come across the waters

A path of yellow moonlight

To bring you safely home.

May the nourishment of the earth be yours,

May the clarity of light be yours,

May the fluency of the ocean be yours,

May the protection of the ancestors be yours.

And so may a slow

Wind work these words

Of love around you,

An invisible cloak

To mind your life.

From the ... Healthy New Year to You! by Sue Asselin, RN

Happy New Year 2015! The members of the Wellness Committee wish you and your loved ones a wonderful year ahead, full of blessings and good health. We thank you for your support of the services and educational programs planned and presented by our committee.

I would like to acknowledge the members of the Wellness Committee and express my gratitude toward them for their assistance and support with programs that help us all live more healthy lives - physically, spiritually, emotionally, and in relationship with one another. The members are: Annette Bergh, Ros Brady, Paul Kretschmann, Betsy Kreuter (Chair), Enid Norris, Ruth Reed, and Karen Young. The next time you talk with one of them, please join me in thanking them for their contributions to the congregation’s wellness.

Here are some of the programs the Wellness Committee has planned in the coming months:

Saturday, Feb 7, 8:00 am to 1:00 pm - Red Cross Blood Drive. Co-sponsored by Women’s Fellowship, this community event is made complete with deviled eggs and live piano music. To schedule an appointment to give blood call 1-800-Give-Life. Please contact your Parish Nurse if you’d like to volunteer to play piano for a one-hour shift or bring a refreshment.

Sunday, March 8 - Wellness Second Hour with Dr. Donna Coletti (right), Director of Palliative Care and Home Hospice at Greenwich Hospital. Dr. Coletti will speak about both programs and explain the differences and similarities, as well as answer questions.

Saturday, March 14 - CPR and AED Refresher Classes for those already CPR certified. This opportunity for practice includes hands-on time with the AED (defibrillator).

Monday, March 23 – A nutritious “Lunch and Learn” program focusing on the DASH diet for controlling blood pressure and promoting heart heath. Denise Addorisio, a Registered Dietician from Greenwich Hospital, will speak about DASH or “Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension,” a plan endorsed by the National Institutes of Health.

Sunday, April 26 - Wellness Second Hour addressing end-of-life planning including advanced directives and care options. This interactive workshop will assist participants in developing a plan of their own.

Ongoing Wellness programs include blood pressure screenings, Medicare Part D counseling, a lending library of books and tapes, Parish Nurse home care eligibility assessment, and informative support for any positive lifestyle changes. If you would like your blood pressure taken, or you have any health-related concerns or questions, stop in to see me, your Parish Nurse, in Room 203. My hours are Tuesdays from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, Sundays from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm, and Wednesdays by appointment.

If you are interested in joining the Wellness Committee and have some healthful ideas to share, please con-tact Sue Asselin, Parish Nurse, at extension 21. We especially need volunteer health professionals to take blood pressures on occasional Sundays when the nurse is unavailable. Wishing you wellness of mind, body, and spirit in the coming year!

Recap of 2014 Christmas Tree Sale

We had a wonderful Christmas Tree and Wreath Sale this year. We had upwards of 30+ volunteers from the Church membership, including some from Young Mariners and Pacific House (a part of Shelter for the Home-less, one of the charities that we are supporting), as well as students from Greenwich High School and the Help for the Homeless Club. We collect-ed approximately $16,000 for the following agencies: Inspirica, Den for Grieving Kids, Sexual Assault Crisis Center, Shelter for the Homeless, Young Mariners Foundation and Meals on Wheels. Thank you to all who volunteered their time and for all who purchased their trees, wreaths, gar-land and kissing balls this year!

The Passing of Greenwich Selectman, David Theis

It was very sad news that Greenwich Selectman, David Theis, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, December 23. “His contributions touched the lives of so many of our fellow residents each and every day,” First Selectman Peter Tesei and Selectman Drew Marzullo said in a joint statement. “Over the past five years, we have been honored to serve on the Board of Selectmen with Dave who brought integrity, wisdom, leadership and humor to every aspect of town government. There was no better partner to serve with and call your friend … We ask that all our fellow residents continue to send their prayers to Dave’s friends and family.”

As a public official and extremely active volunteer, Theis’ contributions to the community were deep and extensive. He was a town native (Cos Cob) and a graduate of Greenwich High School, and in his 5th year on the Board of Selectmen. First Selectman Tesei has ordered the flags in all town buildings to be lowered to half mast until Theis’ funeral.

David Theis is remembered for his decades of service to the town, both as an elected official and as a volunteer. He has been heavily praised for the partnerships he was able to form on the Board of Selectmen, both with Peter Tesei, but more so with Drew Marzullo, the board’s lone Democrat. Though they disagreed politically, they became quick friends and David Theis is remembered fondly by all, regardless of political party.

David joined First Selectman Tesei and town Ambassador at Large, Bea Crumbine, at our Founders’ Day service in 2013 (right). Please send your thoughts and prayers to David’s family. A town memorial is being planned for January 10.

ROTATION CHURCH SCHOOL!!!

Here is the schedule for January...

We are very excited about the new rotation program. Over the next three months we will look at a dif-ferent topic or Bible Story and experience the lessons through various learning styles such as art, drama, cooking, crafts, and games. We are very fortunate to have a great deal of information about the ways of life in biblical times and, so, we will begin with some hands-on workshops and learn about the time when Jesus grew up in Nazareth. We will wonder about what a typical day in Jesus’ childhood would have been like. And we have several people in the congregation who have signed up to help us do that.

February will be all about Joseph (not Jesus’ father but Jacob’s son). Joseph was the youngest of 12 sons AND the seeming favorite of his father. He was sold into slavery and ultimately became a leader in Egypt. There are many exciting ways to learn about this story.

In March, we will look at several of the events during the week before Easter. Again, there are many opportunities for exciting lessons in this segment as well. Feel free to stop into one of our classrooms after worship because we will probably go a little longer than the service so parents and potential teach-ers can see what Rotation is all about.

January 18 – Martin Luther King, Jr Weekend - Service Sunday - One Room Schoolhouse Program in the Daniels Center for ages 5 – 10. Older children are welcome to join in or be helpers to our younger children. In memory of Dr. King and his legacy, we will learn about a need and do a service project for the community.

A CHANGE IN THE COMMUNION PROGRAM

FOR 2ND GRADERS AND THEIR PARENTS

For the past several years, we have held special learning sessions for 2nd graders and

their parents in January. This year, however, we are going to change the timing

because of our new Rotation program. So, look for the Communion program to be

scheduled in either April or May. This opportunity will be for 2nd graders and any

other older children who were not here in previous years and who would like to be

part of the learning experience.

FUN AT THE ADVENT CRAFT WORKSHOP … From one of our families

“After the advent craft workshop, Callie, Charley, and I surveyed all of their projects

and thought about how much work you put into it each year. This will be our 4th

year to have a photograph ornament on the tree - so fun to see how the kids have

grown from year to year. We are very thankful to you for this. Have a good

week. ~Virginia”

Avery’s Book Corner

As we move into the new year, I start 2015 with the book, Speaking Christian: Why Christian Words Have Lost Their Meaning and Power—And How They Can Be Restored by Marcus Borg.

In this book, “acclaimed Bible scholar, Marcus Borg, argues that the very language Christians use has become dangerously distilled, distorted, and disconnected from the beliefs which once underpinned it….Borg calls for a radical change to the language we use to invoke our beliefs—the only remedy that will allow the Church’s words to once again ring with truth, power, and hope.”

“...In Speaking Christian, Borg delivers a language for twenty-first-century Christians that grounds the faith in its deep and rich original roots and allows it once again to transform our lives.”

2015 Stewardship - Blessings All Around As of December 24, we had received 240 pledge cards and a total of $789,325 of financial support for the programs and ministries of First Congregational Church in the coming year. We ask that those who have not yet made their intention known will return their pledge cards as soon as possible so our Budget Committee will have a strong foundation on which to build a plan for 2015. Meanwhile, the Board of Trustees gratefully acknowledges pledges from the following members and friends, as well as those who wish to remain anonymous.

A BIG CHRISTMAS THANK YOU…to everyone who helped to make Christmas Eve such a blessed and special day in the life of our church:

To the children (and several adults!) who made our Nativity pageants – all 3! – beautiful retellings of Jesus’ birth;

To the readers and choirs who gave such heartfelt expressions of joy;

To all the behind-the-scenes helpers who made the magic happen;

To the press who helped to share our celebrations with the community; and

To the community and congregation who came to be together on this most glorious day of the season!!

~ From the pastors and staff of First Congregational Church
