South Melbourne is beautiful throughout the seasons but as the days warm up spring seems to enhance the splendour and charm of the area as residents and visitors appear out in force enjoying the local cafe scene and markets.

I spent a lovely day with my family in South Melbourne recently and commented to my husband as we drove toward South Melbourne Market along Clarendon Street that South Melbourne really has it all. It’s close to the city, close to the water, oozing history and culture, and a place where old world charm meets contemporary living seamlessly with some great amenities in close proximity for families and singles.

We are pleased to feature 3205South Melbourne this month highlighting some of the local events and developments.

on our cover we feature orbis, the latest apartment development to catch the savvy buyer’s eye. every apartment in this development will have north facing views of Melbourne’s skyline and it will stay that way for years to come due to the precinct’s heritage overlay. The development is expected to be completed in 2014 and is well worth a look.

South Melbourne Market is the place to be this month, until September 9, a range of family orientated events and celebrations will take place as part of 2012 Market Week. As one of Melbourne’s favourite markets with visitors, South Melbourne Market will play a starring role and sets the scene for 3AW’s live broadcast from Cecil Street on Saturday 8 September. be sure to join in the festivities, cooking demonstrations and classes, live music children’s entertainment and much more across Market Week.

In this issue Andrew Powell continues his Street Scene series with his take on Cecil Street, while we have also included some events for your consideration.

have a wonderful month ahead!

Inspired by Indian-born British sculptor Anish Kapoor’s three-story-tall, hyper refl ective “Sky Dish” sculpture in new York City’s Rockefeller Center and surrealist painter Rene Magritte’s mysterious suspended orbs painting titled “The Voice of the Air”, Arno Corporation’s stunning new luxury apartment development Orbis adds a new architectural icon to Melbourne’s skyline.

Recently launched and slated for completion in 2014, the Orbis development of one-plus study and two-bedroom apartments features a white-hot South Melbourne location and a playfully sculptural, refl ective façade that’s akin to public art.

It’s the latest collaboration between Arno Corporation visionaries Andrew Cook and Anthony Heffernan and ARM Architecture (lead by Ian McDougall behind the Hamer Hall Redevelopment, the Melbourne Recital Centre and Arno Corporation’s second South Melbourne development Momentum, next door) and it gives luxury a new face in Melbourne. escor (a Smorgon family company) is a joint-venture partner.

Arno Corporation is celebrating 25 years in the property industry this year and is widely regarded as one of Victoria’s foremost residential luxury property developers. Its enviable project portfolio (including the FACe development in Acland Street,

St Kilda and the ISIS development in Domain Road, South Yarra) is distinguished by ambitious architectural techniques more often associated with sculpture.

Arno Corporation’s Anthony Heffernan says ARM’s intriguing design for Orbis plays with perceptions of space and depth by scooping out selective masses from the distinctive façade, creating the illusion

of enormous refl ective orbs and dishes that cleverly invert and reshape their surrounds.

Interior forms are equally sculptural and unexpected. Furnished in a high-end palette of natural materials that counterpoint the dazzling exterior, Orbis apartments are delightfully open and airy thanks to artful glazing that frames carefully composed views.

“The remarkable combination of design, detailing, location and community make Orbis apartments places you’ll want to live in, an investment in its own right,” Mr Heffernan said. “All apartments with north facing views of Melbourne’s skyline are guaranteed to keep their extraordinary vistas for many years to come, due to the precinct’s heritage overlay. Very few developments in and around Melbourne’s CBD can say that.”

Forty-eight apartments with secure undercover car parks start from $495,000 for one-bedroom plus study and from $650,000 for two-bedrooms.

With a strong track record of appeal to some of the world’s most discerning

property buyers, including major corporate players, leading local and international politicians and overseas investors, Arno Corporation is anticipating strong interest from young professionals, downsizers, regional Victorians as well as interstate and overseas investors.

“This degree of luxury and organic design – inside and out – won’t be matched on the market for a very long time,” Mr Heffernan said.

The development address is 97-99 Palmerston Crescent, South Melbourne.

tWeNtYFOUr/7 – We ALL neeD A PLACe TO FeeL SAFeIt is two o’clock in the morning. A woman and her young daughter escaping family violence arrive on the doorstep at McAuley Care safe house. They are afraid and overwhelmed.

Sadly, this is an all too common situation.

McAuley Care – the only safe house in Victoria open twenty four hours a day, seven days a week –provides

crisis accommodation and support to 250 women and 300 children in desperate situations each year.

Ms Jocelyn Bignold, Chief executive Offi cer at McAuley Community Services for Women (McAuley), said many women and children had experienced signifi cant trauma and had nowhere to go and no one to turn to for help.

“When a family arrives at McAuley Care, we provide them with emotional and practical support including assistance with legal, medical and fi nancial matters. Some women are forced to fl ee with nothing so we provide food, as well as clothing, pyjamas and toiletries. We also have a children’s program which helps children express themselves, and helps mothers and children reconnect,” Ms Bignold said.

To help keep the doors of its safe house open night and day, McAuley is holding its annual fundraising event on 25 October in South Melbourne and they hope to count on the support of the local residential and business community to attend their TwentyFour/7 Cocktail Party in the hope of raising $100,000.

Being held at the contemporary rooftop venue, Luminare, tickets cost $150 per person and include an exquisite grazing dinner, fi ne wine and great company!

Is this the quiet achiever in South Melbourne? It runs straight from CityLink to Albert Park’s MSAC complex. South Melbourne Market dominates the reasons you’d wander down Cecil Street and koy restaurant offers amazing Turkish food in a great atmosphere. every time I’ve eaten at koy I’ve spotted St kilda captain, nick riewoldt heading in to or out of Claypots evening Star before or after seafood satisfaction. Do I need to mention the Dim Sims?

Areas of industry, retail, entertainment, leisure and private residential homes are how South Melbourne functions. This harmony must have taken years of practice and a clear understanding of what to expect from any newcomers. I wonder how the patience of people was tested when Park Towers took up four streets and fi lled a block between Ferrars Street and Cecil Street.

The building dominates the area as Cecil Street meets Park Street which is a shame as other buildings on Cecil Street have such architectural merit and interest. An old corner shop who’s faded façade rolls around the corner of Cecil Street and bank Street is one of many gems in this strip along Cecil Street. Whilst some are sadly neglected they are achingly beautiful and appealing to anyone with romantic ideas of “home”.

Let Them eat Cake is a feast for the eyes and stomach. A café that offers delicious desserts, made to make your mouth water. go for a bite or order something huge for a special occasion it’s well worth it.

Market days produce a parade of cars down Cecil Street that range from the obscenely expensive and expansive luxury cars to obscenely expensive

and intimate european miniature cars (Fiat and the inventor of Smart Cars have a lot to answer for) to the trashed and scruffy utes, saloons and hatchbacks. I’ll leave you to discover yourself which direction the vast majority of each style comes from…

Little zones of retail dot the area near the market and offer an alternative atmosphere to the hustle and bustle of the market on market days as they’re often quiet. unless Aldi gets mobbed by bargain hunters it always seems a bit of an under-used resource. Weirdly though the car park under Woolworths and Spotlight is rarely empty although getting a spot in the free parking for two hours area isn’t as hard as you would think.

If you want a shoulder and neck massage then upstairs over Woolworths is the place to get pummelled!

Try the gym up there too…South Melbourne business needs your support. Then you can get some relief from Amcal after your workout.

There’s not a whole lot to shout about on Cecil Street at the industrial end, but I wonder if this is more Port Melbourne or even Southbank. The atmosphere is blitzed by the sound of the traffi c stuck on the slow crawl towards the Westgate bridge.

The magic of Cecil Street is really the beauty of some of the residential buildings. Sensation, aspiration and admiration are words I’d use.

Opal Vapour is a new contemporary dance work that explores cleansing for purification and a deep sense of belonging to a place of birth. Created across two countries – Australia and Indonesia – the performance draws on ritual elements of Javanese Wayang Kulit shadow puppetry.

Invoking classical Javanese court-dance, instilled with the mystical influence of Indonesian trance-possession ritual, Tyas Tunggal’s sinuous transformation is held by Ria Soemardjo’s pure voice and evocative score resonant of Javanese gamelan. Born in Melbourne of Australian-Indonesian descent, Soemardjo draws on her innate respect for Javanese musical conventions, incorporating traditional Javanese tunings and timbres in her compositions using voice, viola and percussion.

Performed in the moment, both artists are transported through time by Paula van Beek’s sublime lighting landscapes and haunting shadow play.

My Island is one of plastic palm trees, Mai Tai’s and drunken sailors. -Samuel Tupou, 2012

Pan-O-Mania – a pastiche of historic events, trends and cultural shifts is a new body of work by Australia’s most exciting and emerging talent, Samuel Tupou. These new works take inspiration from the post-war era of the 50’s through to the early 70’s with particular focus on the ‘Tiki phenomenon’; a blind appropriation of Pacific culture for cashed up westerners.

A recurring theme in Samuel’s work is the repeated pattern from the customary ‘Tapa cloth’ common to the Pacific Islands. The viewer is always exposed to an underlying pattern and/or theme of a delicately repeated pattern from his personal ‘Tapa’ cloth. Sam engages Pacific Island influences and pop culture symbolism to create works that reflect both the artist’s own mixed cultural heritage.

Once there was a lonely man with so much love to give. He wanted a child so badly that he carved himself a beautiful little boy. But the boy wanted the world and the latest designer sneakers. He wanted fame, celebrity and to walk on the wild side.

This woodenhead wanted far more than his father could possibly give, so he ran away to get it. This is his story – a tale of bravery, stupidity and risk, and the indignity of an extendable nose!

Based on the original books by Carlo Collodi, Pinocchio is a musical extravaganza that looks with fresh eyes at the classic story of a puppet who wanted to be a real boy.

Featuring stunning design, incredible performances and an exciting original score, Pinocchio is boldly retold as a witty, rocking, family musical spectacular. Suitable for ages 5+.

Port Phillip Library Service and the State Library of Victoria are asking Port Phillip residents to show off their creativity and writing skills in Writes of Spring, a national Year of reading short story competition.

Writes of Spring invites entrants to visit Port Phillip libraries to collect an illustrated postcard by Victorian artist belinda Suzette that will serve as both inspiration and an entry form – then write their story directly on the back.

Story entries can incorporate handwriting, drawings, printed text or collage. The entries will be judged on their creativity and the quality of their story by a panel of Victorian public library staff. The winning entries will be published, exactly as presented, in a special book available at every Victorian public library branch.

Mayor Cr rachel Powning said this competition highlights how

libraries foster creativity within their communities. “Libraries have been the inspiration and workplaces of writers for generations. Writes of Spring is an example of how our library can inspire people of all ages to create stories that will be shared across Victoria.

“I am excited to see how people respond to the beautiful illustration to tell their stories. The published collection of winning stories will be a lasting legacy of the national Year of reading 2012.”

entries are now open and close on 21 September 2012. Winners will be announced in December to coincide with the launch of the Writes of Spring book.

For more information visit the State Library of Victoria’s website slv.vic.gov.au/writes-of-spring or http://library.portphillip.vic.gov.au and click the ‘What’s on’ tab.
