State School before heading to the Warwick State High School for his secondary & senior studies. Currently based in Toowoomba and employed in the Australian Army, Scott has completed three years studying science and is currently two and a half years through a medical degree with the University of Queensland, which he will complete in about eighteen months time. His recent eight week practical stint has a rural experience requirement. A former Army Reservist, Scott is in his first year full time with the Defence Forces based in Toowoomba. After attaining his medical degree and qualifying as a Doctor he will serve at least another three years in the Army, which could see him posted anywhere Australian troops are deployed.Having been on staff at the Toowoomba Base Hospital and also the Royal Brisbane Hospital, his time at the Allora Medical Centre has been very beneficial given Scott had no previous experience in general practice. While not having given any thought as yet to future direction in medicine, Scott is content currently to just focus on completing his medical studies. He does see a need though for more Doctors in the Warwick & Allora area, and the proposal of a new Medical Centre in Allora can only provide benefits for the local & surrounding community.

Events CalendarAllora Ambassador Involved in Vital Charity “Duck Push”Allora was inundated with ducks on Sunday, 8th July, with the Ernie Young Pavilion at the Allora Showgrounds spilling over with classy pedigreed quackers of all shapes, sizes and colours… mallards, khaki campbells, Indian Runners, Cayuga’s along with countless others. But give a little thought to coaxing one of our quacking feathered friends to trek halfway across a nation!! Well it happened on the Emerald Isle very recently with an Allora local among those in the support entourage as a duck led the way in a major charity event. While he is an Allora local, 18 year old Matthew Kanowski is also currently considered a local around the Clane area in Ireland after involvement in an annual charity event that raised €75,000 (just over $90,000). Matthew, the son of Shaun & Leanne Kanowski of Mt. Marshall, is spending a gap year at Clongowes Wood College, a voluntary secondary boarding school for boys, located near Clane in County Kildare, Ireland. One of Ireland's leading boarding schools, located in the heart of County Kildare, the College is located just 35 minutes from the centre of Dublin. The College was founded by the Jesuits in 1814, and it is one of Ireland's oldest Catholic schools. The past six months has seen the former Allora State School and Scots College Warwick student over 16,500 kms from his Mt. Marshall home as a gap student at Clongowes. While a year in Ireland, especially at a school that can boast a 13th century medieval castle is an amazing experience, Matthew explained that part of that experience has been an annual Clongowes College charity initiative known as the “Duck Push”: “Basically there is a large model duck bolted onto a maneuverable trolley and the school students along with gap students push this duck in groups, two pushing and two steering”.In an amazing effort over a two week period the duck is pushed from Dublin to Limerick, a distance of 174 kms, around halfway across Ireland. Enroute with the ‘fundraising duck’ students pass through the towns of Maynooth, Naas, Sallins, Kilcullen, Clane, Newbridge, Kildare, Portlaoise, Abbeyleix, Mounrath, Birr, Athlone, Nenagh, Roscrea and Limerick.“The students, from 10th Grade, volunteer their time along with the staff members for the event which has been run annually for the past twenty years. The students involved were divided into three groups; two groups would be pushing the duck for a day while the remaining group would be collecting for the charity at the towns stopped at over night”. Matthew’s role mostly involved driving a van as an escort behind the groups pushing the duck. “I will always remember the satisfaction of receiving the praise of the local Irish community and raising the money for such an important charity”. The beneficiary of the two weeks of ‘giant duck maneuvering and pushing’ is Our Lady's Children's Hospital, Crumlin in Dublin. Our Lady's Children’s Hospital is an acute paediatric teaching hospital with 243 beds, employing 1200 staff. It is Ireland's largest paediatric hospital and is responsible

for the provision of the majority of tertiary care services for children and medical research for childhood illnesses in Ireland. The €75,000 raised will enable the purchase of an important specific state of the art piece of equipment for the hospital. “It was an awesome experience and a definite high-light to the year thus far” recalls Matt.

Revitalised Southern Queensland Country Partnership hits the ground running A brand new initiative kicked off last week, bringing together tourism heavyweights from across Southern Queensland to drive a new Tourism Organisation for our region.

Southern Queensland Country Tourism - a new, ‘super-RTO’ (Regional Tourism Organisation) - is bringing together Toowoomba Golden West and South Burnett Tourism with Southern Downs and Granite Belt Regional Tourism in order to give the whole region the momentum and scale needed to foster tourism growth in our region. A Transitional Advisory Board has been appointed to manage the transition to the new body. The explicit focus of the group will be to mobilise the local grassroots to engage in supporting and marketing Southern Queensland Country. The first goal for the new organisation will be getting local authorities to commit to a $1.15 per capita benchmark spend on regional tourism. Speaking during her first week on the job as Chair of the transitional board, Professor Jane Summers said she was looking forward to the opportunity of a fresh start that the new ‘Super RTO’ will offer. “This is all about giving our region a much stronger voice. Southern Queensland Country will give local tourism the scale, recognition, and critical mass we need, while taking advantage of our contemporary country lifestyle’.In coming months Southern Queensland Country Tourism will launch a new brand, marketing strategy and website for the region. Locals interested in connecting with Southern Queensland Country Tourism will be invited to sign-up to a new website, to be launched later this year, or by telephone 07 4632 1988.

All the entries were of a high standard and the judges commented that it was a difficult task to select the final winners. Amongst the entrants to submit a neatly cut and well finished frame was H. Gwynne of Allora.

Allora’s Past 100 years ago July 1912Do You Ping Pong?

The once favourite indoor game known as ping-pong has recently been enthusiastically revived in many centres and, according to an advertisement appearing elsewhere in this issue, the Allora Ping Pong Club is making a big bid for popularity. Four tables have been placed in Whitman’s buildings next door to the “Guardian” office and opposite the Australian Bank of Commerce. The lighting and general arrangements are very good and the opening night has been fixed for Tuesday

next. Tournaments are to be organized regularly for which good prizes will be offered and, as the membership has been fixed at a cheap rate, the club should boom along.ObituaryThe many old friends in Allora and district of Mrs. J. E. Flynn will regret exceedingly hearing of her death which took place in Brisbane early on Thursday morning, following an operation for long-standing internal trouble. The late Mrs. Flynn was identified with Allora from her earliest youth, and her untimely death has been a matter of general regret. She was buried at Ipswich yesterday beside the grave of her first husband. She leaves in addition to her husband, Mr. J. E. Flynn, one little daughter, Miss Josie McCormack, to whom the sympathy of all go out in their sad bereavement.(Mrs. Ellen Flynn formerly McCormack (nee Kelley) was part of a four generation connection with the Royal Hotel (now the Blue Cow). Her father, Patrick Kelley, was licensee of the hotel from 1880 to 1883. Ellen Kelley bought the freehold of the Royal in 1903 and left it, in trust, to her daughter, Mary Josephine McCormack, on her death in 1912. Mary McCormack, later McKendry and Collins, held the freehold of the hotel until it was sold in 1957 at which time her son, Jock McKendry was the licensee. The Allora and District Historical Society has received a Regional Arts Grant to refurbish the collection of Mayoral photos on the walls of the Old Shire Hall. Patrick Kelley, Allora Mayor in 1895 and 1896, is one of the Mayors missing from the almost complete collection. If anyone knows descendants of the above Kelley family, the Society would be pleased to hear from them)
