31th Annual Safety Excellence

Best Practice Seminar

Bsafe HER0

We have all heard the word “hero” from time to time, but have you ever asked yourself “What is a hero?” Is a hero someone we admire, respect, and look up to, or is a hero someone with “super powers”?

While there are many interpretations of what a hero is, Brock considers a Bsafe Hero to be someone who transforms respect and caring into heroic actions. It takes more than random acts of kindness to make a Bsafe Hero. It requires acts that are very distinct and direct; a hero is a person who intervenes.

Brock believes that everyone has the power and ability to be a Bsafe Hero. We may not have super powers like X-ray vision or super strength, but we all possess the personal qualities of respect and caring, which are the greatest attributes of all superheroes. Those qualities make our workforce a League of Heroes and fosters a work environment of ZERO Harm, ZERO Quality Defects, and ZERO Rule Violations.

Bsafe HER0

Most HSE training develops safe workers, but HER0 training develops safe co-workers.The role of the employee as a teammate and those traits critical to HSE success in this functionare what epitomize the concept “Helping Everyone Reach ZER0”.

The idea of zero accidents means achieving an accident-free workplace, regardless the severity of the accident. Even small accidents are not zero accidents. Fatalities make the headlines, but have you ever considered the impact even a small injury can make on a livelihood?

As we go through the HER0 series, we will examine what the thought of helpingothers reach zero means at the job site. This training makes the case for job siteintervention and helping others. The following discussion topics are shared withteammates throughout the month as part of the Brock Group HER0 campaign.

Topics and Learning Objectives:

Week oneHelping Others: Intervention, Teamwork, Peer Support

Week TwoEveryone: Greater inclusiveness at the job site

Week ThreeReaching: Going beyond our comfort zone

Week FourGoal Zero: Why zero harm is so important to a culture of respect and caring

Gold Coin Program

Reinforcement of safety performance should be positive, proactive, and designed to help employees understand when, where, and what forms of safety behaviors are expected.

Recognizing and rewarding employees for compliancewith safety protocols, successful progression and achievement towards their safety goals is one way to develop and, more importantly, reinforce an organizational norm that working safely is valued andexpected.

Our Gold Coin Program recognizes individual employees who show they are committed to being a HER0 and Helping Everyone Reach Zero. Each member of Brock’s Management Team has been assigned a coin that they carry with them daily and give to Employees that demonstrate HER0 behaviors. The Employee redeems the coin for a certificate of achievement and an award item such as a, shirt, ice chest, flash light, etc. from www.brockgoldcoin.com The coin is then returned to the Management Team member and the process can be repeated.
