School Plan We are busy preparing for our new school plan for the 2015-2017 period and part of this process involves consultation with you, our highly valued community members. You would have noticed that earlier this week a link to My School Survey was emailed to those on our electronic email list. It is asked that these be completed by Wednesday 5/11/14 as this is the closing date. There are also several opportunities throughout next week to express your thoughts regarding our strategic direction over the next 3 year period and beyond. Parent Containers From Grandparents Day Thank you to everyone who brought along a contribution to our Grandparents Morning Tea last week. A wonderful time was had by both Grandparents and students and there was a really positive energy around the school which was lovely to see. There were a few unnamed containers left at school after this event so if you are missing any please check in the school office. Head lice There have been reports of some children with head lice at our school this week so we ask that you check your child’s hair regularly and treat it if necessary. Attached is some information on the treatment/management of head lice. Book Fair We are holding another Book Fair at the end of November. It will be a great opportunity to grab a few Christmas stocking fillers. More information will be coming out closer to the date. Year 1/2 News This term in science 1/2 have been learning about how things grow and change. As a class we created an experiment. The class covered one of the bean plants with a clear container and another bean plant with a black container and they were left untouched for 2 weeks. The students wrote their own hypothesis, which they could test. The students found out that by leaving the containers on the plants they slowly died because they could not get the necessary nutrients to live. This experiment leads the class into looking more closely at flora and their little details. 1/2 created a crayon and watercolour painting in class based on the plants located around the rain forest room.

Music Notes On Thursday at 12.30pm our whole school joined in with 2000 other schools across the nation to participate in the Count us in celebration day. The song “Paint us a song” was written by a group of high school students chosen from across Australia for their amazing song writing ability. A local Coffs Harbour boy was one of the students selected to take part in the song writing process. The song was a really catchy, happy song which I’m sure you have heard your children singing at home. Thankyou to all the Karangi students you sounded absolutely beautiful. I’m very proud of you all. The Tournament Of Minds!!! On Tuesday the 28th of October Elicia, Erin Burnett, Charlie Geddes and I went to the Tournament of Minds at Upper Orara Primary School. The principal of Ulong Public School wanted us to do three challenges: we had to make a racer that would go up a slippery slope, one to go in a straight line and one to go in a rough circle. The racer was made out of a bottle using two rubber bands in the middle of it and a pencil at the top of the bottle with a matchstick at the bottom, there was a hole at the top and bottom of the bottle. There were two Karangi team’s stage 2 and stage 3. The stage 3 people were: Liam, Leo, Arabella and Delphi and I worked in the stage 2 team. My team and I tried lots of things and only one thing worked. The idea of this design was to go straight but when we winded it up like a Ballerina and then placed it down on the ground it went round and round in a circle, well a rough circle. Elicia then went and got the Ulong principal and we tested it out and our team got given 7 points and placed third. I really enjoyed the Tournament of Minds. By Amy Marshall

On Tuesday October the 28th Amy, Elicia, Charlie, Leo, Liam, Arabella, Delphi and I were chosen to go to the Tournament of the minds. Charlie, Amy, Elicia and I were in the stage 2 group and Arabella, Delphi, Leo, Liam, were in the stage 3 group. We had three challenges: to make a bottle role in a straight line, a circle and we also had to make it role up a hill. After lunch we played hand ball. Our group only got to finish one task. I enjoyed the day. By Erin Burnett

On Tuesday the 28th of October Amy, Erin Burnett, Charlie Geddes and I went to the Tournament of the Minds held at Upper Orara Public School. The principal of Ulong Public -School was the person who ran it. All day we had to try to complete three challenges using racers that we had to build using rubber bands, a plastic bottle, a pencil and a matchstick. This is how we made the racers. The principal of Ulong put holes in the lid and the bottom of the plastic bottle. Then we tied two rubber bands together, threaded them through the bottom and up through the top. We used a piece of wire to pull it up through the lid. We threaded a matchstick through the bottom and a pencil through the top. To work the Racer you had to twirl the pencil around like a Ballerina. We had to do it for a long time. Anyway, the challenges were to make our racer go in a straight line, go in circles and go up a ramp. There were two teams from Karangi. They were stage 2 and stage 3. Amy, Erin Burnett, Charlie Geddes and I were in stage 2 and Delphi, Leo, Arabella and Liam were in the stage 3 group. My group managed to complete 1 challenge. The things we put on our bottle were three strips of foam. This made the bottle go in circles. At the end of the day we had the option to have a race. Our car placed third. I really enjoyed the day. By Elicia Bull On Tuesday October the 28th Elicia, Amy, Erin Burnett and I went to the Tournament of Minds at Upper Orara Public School. We made racers which were made out of a plastic bottle, match sticks, 2 rubber bands and a pencil. We had three challenges to complete one was to make the racer go in a straight line. The Stage 3 team which was Leo, Delphi, Arabella and Liam got two challenges done. At the end of the day we got to keep the racers. Awwww..... it was so lovely to see so many of our gorgeous, amazing, wise and supportive nannas, pops, grannys, grammys, nonnas, nonnos, pas and granmamas being loved and appreciated by our Karangi kids :) Observing them collecting the scones and biccies - nan's favourite no doubt; it was hard to pick who was enjoying the moment more! They truly are treasures that deserve to be spoilt and our school certainly did that! Thank you to everyone who contributed to the amazing selection of treats (and I for one was fortunate enough to taste-test Jen Snell's delicious orange cake!! Hmmm); once again our school community excelled all expectations and a fantastic morning was had by all. Thank you to the staff for hosting the many visitors through the classrooms - they all looked amazing! It's so great to see all the colourful artworks and for the kids to have the opportunity to show off their amazing talents! Final Word: "When a train goes through a tunnel and it gets dark, you don't throw away the ticket and get off. You trust the engineer." - Corrie Ten Boom. Have a wonderful, fun-filled weekend everyone,

Head lice - the facts Head lice infestations are a common occurrence, particularly in primary schools. • about 23% of primary students have head lice at any one time • anyone can catch head lice regardless of their age, sex, or how clean their hair is • head lice move from one person's head to another via hair • head lice do not survive long when they are off a human head • head lice do not live on furniture, hats, bedding or carpet • head lice have built up some resistance to head lice treatments Treatment • daily combing of white hair conditioner using a fine tooth comb is effective in getting rid of head lice and

eggs (nits) • school communities may need to hold 'check and treat' or Nitbuster days where everyone learns about and

starts treatment on the same day. Tips for parents in reducing the spread of head lice As infestations are particularly common in primary schools, it is best to choose a treatment that can be used over time. There is no single solution to eradication, only persistence. • regularly check your children's hair • teach older children to check their own hair • tie back and braid long hair • keep a fine tooth head lice comb in the bathroom and encourage all family members to use it when they

wash their hair.
