PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

OO f late we have had quite a lot of problems related to the running of the Club. I am

glad these problems surfaced rather early in the year, meaning corrections can be undertaken appropriately. I am glad also that PDG Dr Paul Lee has taken the initiative to help arrest these problems from manifesting into more problems for future Club leaders. The briefing on the Roles & Responsibilities of Club officers on Wednesday 5th August, 2015 at the Royal Lake Club conference room – that took more than two hours – was certainly something much needed. I hope this briefing can be made into an annual affair done at one of the Club Assemblies before the Rotary Year ends. With knowledge we can move forward with confidence. So knowing what your duties and responsibilities are when you take office will make you confident in executing your functions without distractions. However, the need to ask questions is still there; so don’t worry if you have to ask anybody to help with something. Also you need to love reading because we churn out tons of documentation as the years go by. Mostly these are on paper. But with technology available quite cheaply nowadays, I am taking up our Treasurer Loo Ming Chee’s suggestion to digitize our documents and make them available from ―the cloud.‖ Likewise, you should learn to put your thoughts on paper so that it can be better digested by the Board members for accurate and speedier decision making. For a 49 year old Club, we obviously have, through the years developed some habits which may or may not be good. Some people refer to this as ―Pudu Culture.‖ I am not sure what these are actually. But if what I’ve noticed – and tried to change – are Pudu cultures (eg tolerance of defaulters, not carrying out proper handover/takeover of duties, not properly attired, accepting the lack of identity, PPs going into RINO mode; and much more,) then it will be an uphill battle to go 5-star and be a world class Club. However, we can redeem ourselves by doing something that we do best ie the ILTS. We should share and offer to host and run the ILTS not only for our own Interactors but also for Interactors of clubs in Group 10. If there is enough capacity, we could even offer it to Interactors of the smaller clubs in the Klang Valey. I am sure it would be much appreciated and our PR Director would love to publicise this noble gesture in our website and Facebook; and further to the District and even Rotary International. Dato Muslim Ayob President RY 2015-2016

FF riendship is one of the most beautiful relationships in the world. Our friends are our pillars of strength and give us the much needed

support and comfort that we all seek in life. Spending time with true friends is one of the greatest joys in the world. What are the lessons in life that friendship teaches us? TRUST The word "Trust " is very important in any relationship and it is true for friendship. In fact, the very foundation of friendship between two people is based on mutual trust and understanding. The trust grows as the friendship matures. We also trust the judgement of our friends, having the confidence in them. SHARING Another key factor of friendship is mutual sharing between friends .In fact friendship usually gives us the first lesson in "sharing" in our lives. From our lunch boxes in school to office chit chat, everything seems better when shared with a friend. Sharing teaches us to be unselfish and generous and is one of the sweetest aspects of friendship. ACCEPTANCE One of the best things about friendship is that in front of your friends you can be truly the person you are and they will accept and love you for who you are. True friendship can cross the narrow barriers of religion, race or creed. BELIEVE Friends have faith in you and your ability even you have stopped believing in yourself. Friends always share in our dreams. Good friends act as valuable guides. Rotary provides many opportunities for us to make new friends and to foster close relationships with our Rotary friends, through our Avenues of Service meetings, club fellowship activities, firesides, club project activities, District Assemblies and District Conferences. While it is important to have friends it is equally important to know how to maintain their friendship. The seeds of friendship need to be sowed deep and the plant needs to be carefully and tenderly nurtured to bear a great fruit. ―Friendship isn't about whom you have known the longest... It's about who came, and never left your side‖.

Warmest Regards PP Mike Tung

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL NEWS

Africa goes one year without a case of polio - RI President K R Ravindran speaks to you

Just a few days from now, on 11 August, we will mark a tremendous milestone: one full year without a single case of polio caused by wild poliovirus in Africa. The magnitude of this achievement can hardly be overstated. A polio-free Africa has been within sight, so near and yet so far, for over a decade. The hard work and commitment that have brought us to this point have been nothing short of heroic. Tens of thousands of health workers reached hundreds of millions of children with vaccine, in some of the most difficult conditions imaginable. Together, we have done what once seemed impossible: We have stopped polio in Africa.

Yet this progress, momentous as it is, is still fragile. As long as polio exists in the two remaining endemic countries of Pakistan and Afghanistan, the virus still has the potential to spread and to spark new outbreaks. Now, more than ever, we need the power of all of Rotary to carry us through to the end: not just a polio-free Africa, but a polio-free world.

Wherever you live, whether your country has just conquered polio or has been polio-free for decades, we need your voice, and your help. I ask all of you to read and use the materials in this tool kit to find ways to raise awareness in your community, and beyond. We need every Rotarian, in every Rotary club, to be talking about polio: making sure that media outlets report on our progress and our elected officials see polio eradication as a global priority. Your grassroots work helps drive the increased media coverage we have seen in the past year, which in turn drives global backing of our work to eradicate polio. Together, we will keep polio front and center in our communities and on our national agendas, keeping up the energy and the momentum that will push us through to the finish.

The battle in Africa has, for the moment, been won, but we need the strength of every Rotarian to help us win the war. Together, we will End Polio Now and truly Be a Gift to the World.

K.R. Ravindran President, Rotary International
