WORD OF LIFE: Christians are people who have been conquered by Christ’s love and, accordingly, under the influence of that love… they are profoundly open to loving their neighbor in concrete ways. This attitude arises primarily from the consciousness of being loved, forgiven, and even served by the Lord, who bends down to wash the feet of the Apostles and offers himself on the Cross to draw humanity into God’s love.~ Pope Benedict XVI, Message for Lent 2013, October 15, 2012

4 th Sunday of Lent “No longer was there manna for the Israelites, who that year ate of the yield of the land of Canaan.” (JOSHUA 5:12)

Throughout the forty years that the Israelites journeyed through the desert, God provided them with manna to eat. As soon as they were able to enjoy the fruits of the Promised Land the manna ceased. Likewise, God’s blessings to us may change over the years but it is important to trust that God will always provide us with all that we need.

From the St. Vincent de Paul Society:

Lent is a call not just to “give up something” but more important to “give something for the poor.” Wherever you live in the parish, there are poor families within walking distance of your home. When in need, they ring the rectory bell. They are, in effect, ringing your doorbell.Your gift in the St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box will help the poor to celebrate the grace of God’s love this Easter.

FaithLord God, I will not be puffed up; keep my desires

uprightII only long to be righteous and live by faith.

Habakkuk 2:4 (NIV)

Our Sympathy: All of us at St. Joachim & St. Joseph join in offering our sympathy and prayers to the families of LOVELL DELASCHMIDT, brother of Amy Lee Bea Hellwig, and ROGER HAMMOND, brother of Edith Portell & Hattie Bergner.

EASTER FLOWERS AND DECORATIONS: If you wish to donate towards the cost of the Easter flowers & decorations in memory of a loved one, you may place your donation ($12.50) in an envelope with the needed information and drop it in the collection basket or by mailing your donation to the church. Please do so early, as only a limited number of flowers will be ordered. Thank you!

Wanted: People to serve in various roles on Palm Sunday and during Holy Week (foot washing, to strip the altar on Holy Thursday evening, youth & adult altar servers for all days, Passion Proclaimers on Good Friday, Choir Members on Holy Saturday). Please call the Rectory if you are available!

On Palm Sunday we need 3 people for each Mass: someone to read the regular Readings, someone to read the Passion and someone for the second person in the Passion Reading.

Holy Thursday we need 12 people for the foot washing and 4 people to help with striping the altar.

Good Friday, again we need someone to read the regular Readings and then 3 people to read the Passion. We also need at least 4 servers to help with the Cross.

Holy Saturday Night we need at least 3 Readers and 4 Servers.

If you are a Reader, Server or Eucharistic Minister (even if only occasionally) PLEASE call the Rectory office to volunteer! It is so much less stressful if we know who is going to be doing what and when! Thank you!

RCIA. If you are looking to develop a personal relationship with Jesus, a community where you can belong, worship experiences, knowledge about the Catholic Church, service opportunities, or sacraments. Look no further. Call Mrs. Joyce Politte at 573-438-3213 or 573-438-3973 or Mrs. Mary Ann Pratt at 573-438-6181.

TODAY’S READING:Our first reading sets the stage for the other two: God hears the Chosen People’s cry in Egypt, and acts decisively to save them. But Saint Paul says that not all of them were saved in the end. What was needed was repentance, the repentance of which Jesus speaks in today’s Gospel. Let us listen closely today for God’s message of repentance and redemption.

Question of the WeekSince the fertilizer in Jesus’ parable (“manure” in some translations!) helps save the tree, what “manure” in my life right now might actually be God’s “fertilizer” making my discipleship more fruitful?

ALL ARE INVITED! Saturday, March 16, 2013, the St. Anne Sodality will sponsor a “St. Patrick’s Day Corn Beef & Cabbage Pot Luck Dinner” in the school cafeteria following the Saturday evening Mass. The St. Anne members will supply the main dish and everyone attending is asked to bring a side dish! Please plan on joining us and enjoying a meal and fellowship!

St. Joachim School“Your Future Begins With Us”

News from St. Joachim School & PSR

Mission StatementThe mission of St. Joachim Catholic School is to assist the parents and parish community in the shared responsibility of educating God’s children to be knowledgeable, responsible, loving Christians.

From Principal’s Desk

March 2, 2013

Dear St. Joachim/St. Joseph Parishioners,

You are to be commended for your choice and the sacrifices you make to support Catholic education at St. Joachim School.

These are difficult times for the parish and school of St. Joachim. The slow economy has hit Old Mines. The cost of services, supplies, and benefits has risen. Income is not keeping up with expenses, but contributing parishioners have been so generous and gracious. Many have increased their donation to help meet the financial obligations. The changes that are being made call for each of us to look at change as a challenge to work together, to become a better parish, and to become a better school.

After a school audit (routine for those schools who receive an ACA grant), a budget was formed for 2013-2014. However, the parish could not afford the proposed budget for next year. Therefore, with the approval of Father Ted, administrator, and Associate Superintendent Al Winkelmann, and the knowledge of the St. Joachim Advisory Board, a plan was formed to ensure Catholic Education at St. Joachim, but with some reductions. There were no students enrolled for the 3 year old program and only 3 students enrolled for the seventh and eighth grades. Therefore, the preschool (3 year old students) and the seventh and eighth grades will not be offered in 2013-2014. Enrollment was solid in grades PreK through grade 6. St. Joachim will offer grades PreK (age 4) through grade 6 in 2013-2014. We have faced these challenges in the past, and we hope that in the future more parents will take advantage of the excellent religious and academic programs that St. Joachim offers.

Of course, the difficult part of this downsizing is that two of our dedicated teachers will lose their jobs.

Please pray for them and support them in any way that you can. If you have questions, please call Father Ted Pieper 573-438-6181 or Mrs. Politte at 573-438-3973.

God Bless,Father Ted Pieper, PastorMrs. Joyce Politte, PrincipalSt. Joachim School

Catholic Education is Affordable for All. An Alive in Christ Scholarship is available to all families (Catholic and non-Catholic). Scholarships are nothing to be ashamed of. High school students receive scholarships. College students receive scholarships. Why not Catholic elementary students? For more information or an application, Call Mrs. Politte at 573-438-3973.

Congratulations to…. Lucien Bequette who was accepted as a student at St.

Pius High School for 2013-2014. In addition, Lucien received a $1,000 academic scholarship. President Karen DeCosty wrote to the St. Joachim School Community, “…I would like to thank you for the wonderful job you do for Catholic Education. You are a critical part to the success of Secondary Catholic High Schools.”

Adam Boyer, who is the St. Pius recipient of the Archbishop May Service Award.

Principal Search. We pray. Holy Spirit guide us as we choose new leadership for St. Joachim School. Help us to discern who would be the best candidate to continue the Mission of Jesus Christ to teach the children to know, love, and serve God and to provide an excellent academic program. Amen.

Stewardship ThoughtsHere is an article from the Office of Stewardship of the Archdiocese:

Gift of TreasureThe sharing of our financial gifts is an expression of our Faith; it's an act of worship. This is a tough concept for many Catholics to accept. For some reason, we have a harder time detaching ourselves from money than we do with any other thing. Think of it this way: If someone asked you to donate food to your local parish food drive, you would gladly grab food out of your pantry and take it to Church. Heck, you'd probably offer to drive the food to the family in need! Well, think of your money as those cans of vegetables and other food you have stored away. It's just another "thing" to be shared with those in need.

More thoughts on this:"Our capacity to give is determined by the size of our heart, not our checkbook."Money is neither good nor bad; it's the love of money that leads to selfishness. Just as we try to maintain our physical health through good daily habits and annual check-ups, we should do the same for our financial health: prepare a written budget, track spending, save money, give generously and live within our means. Here are some resources to help you get into good financial shape: Read “Faith Finances” by Tom Zordani (an excellent book)For a summary of Tom Zordani's book "Faith Finances," call the (parish office) and ask for a copy.
