At this stage, you will need a meeting with the

project sponsor. It's also possible that the sponsor

will request a project charter or a project

statement.

Even if the sponsor doesn't request one, it's a good

idea to produce one for yourself and the rest of the

project team.

A project charter or statement may well contain the

following information:

1. Project identification

2. Project description

3. The priority of the project

4. The organization that the project is for, what

customer organization

5. The proposed project manager

6. The type of project

7. The status of the project

8. When the project should start

9. When the project is due to finish

10. And any other assumptions about the project

Certain projects will also require you to have a high

level plan at this early stage. The amount of

information and process needed for this first step

will depend on the project in hand, the organization

you're working for and it will of course depend on

the preferences of the project sponsor you're trying

to sign up.

Decide the ProjectManagement Process

2Decide the

ProjectManagement

Process

As they say, be careful what you ask for, you just

might get it! Now you have a project approved and

you need to decide how to manage the project and

how much project management rigor you will apply.

2Decide the

ProjectManagement

Process

Your organization may have guidelines or

templates for certain project types, which will make

this step easier as you will be selecting a pre-

defined approach and then perhaps tailoring it.

This will make your life easier, as long as the local

guidelines are sensible!

2Decide the

ProjectManagement

Process

If you do not have local guidance then you can look

at this step as thinking through the typical project

management items and deciding which ones you

need for your project.

3Create a

CollaborativeProject Site

Managing projects collaboratively means you'll

need a collaborative project site.

With many free options available (such as

Microsoft SharePoint Foundation) you have no

excuse not to be managing projects collaboratively!

3Create a

CollaborativeProject Site

The site you set up needs to mirror the approach to

project management that you will undertake.

On the next page, you'll find a table using some of

our BrightWork templates to jumpstart your ideas

for this step.
