xii Preface
This book will serve as a basic text for a course in quantum chemistry
at the senior level. It is not m ean t to give a com plete cov erag e of the field.
Rather, i t introduces the student to that part of quantum theory that is of
major interest to chemists; i t also introduces him to the most important
use of quantum theory in chemistry
application to the understanding of
chemical bonding. Two of the more important specific problems in chemi-
cal bond ing
bond ing in com plexe s and in conjugated organic molecules
are very briefly introduced; the very basic theory of spectroscopy is also
briefly treated. With this latter material, and the basic theory developed
in the main part of the text, the student should feel happy about entering
more special ized undergraduate and graduate courses in quantum
chemistry .
I should like to express my sincere appreciation to my colleague, Dr.
D . Saraswati, who read the manuscript and offered many helpful sugges-
tions for modifying it; I am also indebted to him for many useful dis-
cussions regarding its content. The manuscript was typed by my wife,
Eila, who gave up a summer of her time to do it—I am most grateful to
her.
