Hamish McBean and His Sheepby Moira Hepburn

Every Wednesday, Hamish McBean ate hisporridge, put on his kilt, and went to market. Everyweek, he set off with ten sheep to sell, and every

week he came back with twenty.

Hamish McBean, this has got to stop!

Mrs. McBean said. We have too many sheep!

There are sheep in the barn, sheep in the fields,

sheep in the woodshed, and sheep on the porch!

I know, said Hamish McBean. But when

I get to the market and see their sad faces, I justhave to bring them home.

We have no money! said Mrs. McBean,

waving her wooden spoon. These sheep will haveto go!

Hamish McBean was very sad. He liked hissheep, and they liked him. The sheep had fields of

fresh green grass to eat, a bubbling stream to drink

from, and leafy apple trees to lie beneath when the

    sun gottoo hot.

Hamish McBean went to his workshop tothink. He picked up a piece of wood and turned it

    over in his hands.

Looking around, he saw bits of wood in allshapes and sizes. He saw pots of paint, jars of nails

and screws, and bottles of polish and dye.

I have an idea! said Hamish McBean. Iwill turn these scraps into things I can sell! Then I

can keep my lovely sheep! I will make boxes and

shelves, stools and tables, rocking horses, salt pots, ladles and cradles!

All day and night he worked, sawing wood, planning planks, and banging nails.

When Wednesday dawned all dark and

dreary, Hamish McBean loaded his cart withcolorful pieces and set off to market.

In the market square, he set out his tables,

his ladles and cradles, his boxes and shelves, hisstools, and his salt pots and toys.

Soon a crowd of shoppers gatheredaroundHamish McBeans wonderful wares.

I must have this! a woman said, waving a

    wooden ladle.

I must have that! a man declared, pointing

    to a wooden rocking horse.

Happy shoppers bought piece after piece

until Hamish McBean had nothing left to sell.

Mrs. McBean could not believe their luck!

Her husband returned with an empty cart, a bag full

of money, and enough orders to keep him busy for ayear.

He soon put up a big sign that said: Hamish

McBean, Carpenter Extraordinaire. And underneathit, he added:A man with great flair!* People came

from far and wide to buy the things that he made.

But Hamish McBean was not changed by fame and

fortune. He was always happiest when he was withhis sheepeither in the fields or by the bubbling

stream or under the leafy apple trees when the sun

    got too hot.

    The Worry Rock

Rosa was spinning like a wheelarms out and a huge grin on her face. When her mother came up thestairs, she laughed and asked, What are you doing, Rosa?

Rosas eyes grew wide. I was worried about Toms being in the same school as me this year. I just

realized, though, that he wont be in my hallway! We wont eat lunch at the same time either, so he cant bother

me!Mom looked at Rosa and handed her some clean laundry to put away. Someday you will understand

why your little brother loves you so much, Mom said about Toms. Someday youll see that having a brother

who admires you isnt such a bad thing!

The first day of school, Mom asked Rosa to walk Toms to his class. Rosa pleaded and begged not to do

it. She did not want to be seen with kindergarten kids! She wanted to be with her friends. Mom told Rosa thatshe didnt have to help her brother, but Rosa could tell that her mother was disappointed.

On the second day of school, Rosa was looking for Japan on a map when there was a knock at the door.

Her teacher, Mr. Martin, answered it. Rosa could see the kindergarten teacher at the door. She looked a little

worried.Mr. Martin called out, Rosa, could you please go with Mrs. Williams?

Rosa felt a little tickle in her tummy. She gathered her jacket and her bag before meeting Mrs. Williamsin the hall. Although the teacher was smiling, she looked concerned. Sorry to pull you out of class, Rosa, but

Toms is having a bad day. I thought you could help.

Rosa wondered what kind of trouble Toms might be in. Did he let the class hamster loose? Was hepainting his clothes with red paint? Maybe he was hiding in the coat closet and wouldnt come out! Rosa took a

deep breath as she followed Mrs. Williams to the kindergarten hall.

Rosa and Mrs. Williams arrived at the kindergarten classroom. Rosa saw Toms with his head down on

his little desk. His shoulders were shaking, and she could tell that he was crying. Her heart melted. She walked

quickly to him and knelt down. Whats wrong, Toms? she asked.

Toms looked up at his sister. His cheeks were streaked with tears. He threw his arms around her neck.

Dont tell Mom, he cried, squeezing her tightly. She thinks Im a big boy now.

Rosa smiled as she tightly hugged her brother. She suddenly remembered how she felt when she started

kindergarten. Rosa had carried a small worry rock in her pocket. When she became afraid, worried, or nervous,

she simply rubbed the smooth little stone between her thumb and fi ngers. It always

calmed her fears. She still carried the rock in her bag.

Rosa dug out her worry rock and placed it in Tomss hand. This is for you, she said. Whenever I am

worried, I rub this rock and I feel better. Why dont you try it? Im going back to class, but remember Im notfar away.

DIRECTIONS: Read the passage (Horns and Antlers), answer the questions.

    Horns and Antlers

From Africa to Alaska, the world is fi lledwith interesting and unusual animals that have horns and antlers.

These hard, pointed growths are attached to an animals skull and develop throughout its life. In males, horns

and antlers are mainly used to fi ght other males and to get the attention of females. In both males and females,

horns may have several uses, including protection against enemies. Despite their similarities, horns and antlers

are quite different. Do you know the differences between the two?

    What are horns?

Horns are permanent parts of an animals head. They continue to grow during the animals life. They do not fall

off. Horns are covered with a strong material called keratin. Your fingernails are also made of keratin. Horns

have a hollow center at the base, where they are attached to an animals skull. Horns are pointed and usually

have a slight curve. Some are twisted, and others have huge, curving spirals. Horns usually come in pairs and

are not branched, or split. The shape and size of horns are different and depend on the type of animal.

    Which animals have horns?

Some cows, antelope, buffalo, sheep, and goats have horns. Males usually have larger horns than females. Insome animal families, only males have horns. Animals use their large horns in fi ghts to show their body

strength. Some animals may use their horns to dig holes and to scratch their skin.

    Unusual Horns

The rhinoceros is another animal that has horns, but its horns are different from those of other horned animals.

Instead of having horns on its head, the rhinoceros has slightly curved horns on its nose. Another difference is

that the horns of the rhinoceros are solid all the way through. Giraffes also have unusualhorns. Their horns are

small and bony, and they are covered with skin and hair.

    What are antlers?

Antlers look like horns, but they are different in many interesting ways. Unlike horns, antlers are oftenbranched. The branches usually have separate tines, or points. When antlers fi rst begin to grow, they are made

of a soft material called cartilage. Your nose is also made of cartilage. These new antlers are covered with fuzzy

skin called velvet. As the antlers grow, the soft cartilage is replaced by hard bone. The fuzzy skin cover dries

out and is rubbed off. This exposes the hard, bony antlers. Antlers grow surprisingly fast. Every year, antlers

fall off and then new ones grow back.

    Which animals have antlers?

6 Some animals that have antlers are deer, moose, and elk. Male deer are well known for their antlers. Some

deer have large, heavy sets of antlers with many points. Male moose grow very large, broad antlers. The antlers

can grow to be four to five feet wide.

    Telling the Difference

The next time you see an animal with horns or antlers, think about what you have learned. It wont be long

before you will be able to tell which animals have horns and which animals have antlers.

    questions.

    Speech to After School Teachers

Hello, afterschool teachers of Northview Elementary School. Thank you for letting me come to yourmeeting today. My name is Olivia Mordello, and I am in Miss Watsons third grade class. My friends and I are

in the afterschool program and have an idea that we would like to share. We hope that youll be able to help us.

The afterschool program here at Northview is a lot of fun. We receive a healthful snack. We are given

time to study and do homework. We also get to go to the school playground and the school library. However,

we would like to ask you to think about adding some more activities to the afterschool program.

My friends and I thought of a great idea. The school gym is empty after school. Because it is available,

we would like to use it. Some of us like arts and crafts and other activities. Some of us like to play basketball or

volleyball. We could set aside some space in the gym to do these activities.

We dont think it would be difficult to make a schedule that would

allow us to do some different activities. The students in the afterschool

program are already divided in groups. Each day the groups could go to adifferent activity. For example, after homework and snack time on

Monday, a group could play basketball. On Tuesday, the group could do

an art project. On Wednesday, the group could go to the library. It wouldbe like having centers in the classroom that we rotate to each day! Each

group will have something different to do.

We hope this idea will make things easier for the teachers and give students new activities. We already

believe it will make things more interesting for us. We do know that these changes might take some time.

However, we would like for the teachers to think about helping to make our afterschool program more exciting.

You may have some ideas of your own to share.

We hope you like our idea, and we are eager to see some new activities in the Northview Afterschool

Program very soon! Thank you for listening.

    BABY BELLA

For weeks, trainers at the aquarium took turns watching the calf all day and all night. They cheered

when Bella took her first breath of air. Soon after, they saw Bellas mother, Puiji, help nudge the calf downtoward her belly.

The trainers wrote down everything Bella didwhen she nursed and for how long, when she swam upto the waters surface to breathe, and when she stayed by Puijis side.

Theyll use all they learn to help other beluga calves survive in aquariums and in the wild.

At first Bella was a wobbly swimmer and didnt know how to steer. So the trainers kept watch with

padded poles to gently nudge the calf away from hard pillars in the tank. But Bella learned quickly, and then she

enjoyed playfully giving people a scare. Shed swim full speed at the pillar, then swim away, says trainer LisaTakaki.

When the calf was a few days old, scuba divers entered her tank to clean the walls. At first, Bella was

shy around the visitors and hid behind her mother, but Puiji swam up to the divers to show her calf there wasnothing to be scared of.

If Puiji didnt trust us, she wouldnt let us get near the calf, says Lisa. Shes teaching Bella to live

    here.

Sure enough, when Bella was three weeks old she began swimming up to the divers and looking them in

the eye. She was soon comfortable enough with her human trainers to swim up to them for a pat on the head orto open her mouth for a tongue tickle.

When Bella was four weeks old, the trainers moved a female whale called Naya into her tank. Naya often swam

with Bella while Puiji took a rest, and she watched over the calf just as carefully as Puiji did.

Bella watched Puiji swim back and forth with ease through a

tunnel connecting their tank with a neighboring tank. But the nervouscalf would swim toward the mouth of the tunnel only to swim back

again without entering. Belugas naturally fear entering new tunnels

because, once inside, they cant surface for a breath of air. Finally,

patient Naya hovered at the tunnels entrance until Bella decided tofollow her. Now the calf had a whole new tank to explore!

Puiji and Naya like to play with the toys that the trainers throw into their tank. But Bella kept far way

until one day when she accidentally brushed against an inner tube. Then she began nudging it shyly. Now she

loves to play with toys, biting at a Frisbee or popping up through the middle of the inner tube.

Recently Bella had her first taste of solid food when the fish she was playing with slipped down her throat.Shes not big enough to stop nursing, though, and she still has lots to learn. But Puiji and Naya are good

teachers. And the trainers try to introduce her to something new every daynew challenges, new toys, or new

    skills.

Gorilla is getting a new job in the jungle. She will no longer gather plants. She is going to be a news

carrier, Monkey said. Do not tell anyone. Its a secret.

The next day, Gorilla woke Monkey up early. Everyone in the jungle knows my secret! Gorilla

yelled. I trusted you! Why did you tell?

But I only told Elephant, Monkey said.

Gorilla turned her back and said, You are not supposed to tell someone elses secret.

Monkey sat in a tree and stared at the ground. Everybody told him secrets, and then they got mad at him

because he told another animal. Telling one animal wasnt bad, he thought.

That afternoon, Monkey wanted some bananas. When he reached his favorite tree, he saw the animals

gathering for a party. Did he forget it was someones birthday? No, he didnt remember being invited to any

    parties.

He rushed up to Mrs. Lion. Excuse me, Mrs. Lion, Monkey said. What is everyone doing? Is itsomeones birthday today?

Mrs. Lion jumped. Oh, Monkey, well she began.

Its Little Lions third birthday, and there is a surprise party tonight, Mr. Lion interrupted. We didnt

invite you, Monkey, because you cant keep a secret. We dont want Little Lions surprise ruined.

Zebra and Mrs. Lion nodded their heads. Monkey felt as if his stomach was sinking to his toes. A tear

fell down his cheek. I wasnt invited? he asked quietly.

No, Mr. Lion said. Now we will have to change the party because youfound out. You mighttell Little Lion.

Just then, Monkey got an idea. Wait, if I prove I will not tell Little Lion, then can I come to the

    party tonight?

Yes, Mr. Lion said slowly. But to make sure you can keep a secret, you must play with Little Lion. If

you can play with him without telling him about the party, then you are welcome to come.
